Problem Set #4 Posting Date: October 19th, 2012

Fall 2012 University of Connecticut Prepared by: Prof. Ali Bazzi Due Date: October 31st, 2012

Notes: - There was a mistake in the buck converter model derivation in class on 10/12/12 and this is the right control-to-output transfer function - In lecture #22 we mentioned load and line regulation: Load Regulation (%)=[Vout (Min. Load)- Vout(Max. Load)]*100%/ Vout(Nominal Load)] Line Regulation (%)=[Vout (Max. Vin)- Vout(Min. Vin)]*100%/ Vout(Nominal Vin)] Problem #1 Buck-boost converter model (7 points) A non-ideal buck-boost converter is shown in the figure below. a) Find the state-space model of the buck-boost converter for both cases when S is on or off. (3 points) b) Find Vo/Vin. (2 points) c) Find . (2 points)

Problem #2 DC/DC converter control (7 points) The maximum over-shoot (M) and settling time [time to reach a +/-5% margin of the steady-state output] (ts), of a second order system are defined as: and The input-to-output transfer function is . .

Let L=4.7H, C=4.7F, R=1, fs=100kHz, and Vin=1V: a) Find the expected M and ts of the input-to-output transfer function at D=100%. (2 points) b) Using the average model of the buck converter ( and at D=100%, simulate a step response of the system model in MATLAB. Hint: Use the MATLAB step function. (3 points) c) Compare your results from part (b) for the transient response of vo to those expected from part (a). Problem #3 Converter components (6 points) A PV cell feeds a buck-boost converter to supply power to a 75W resistive load. The input voltage range is 5V to 48V, and the output voltage is at 24V. The switching frequency is 50kHz. a) Design an ideal buck-boost converter for an output voltage ripple of +/-0.5% and inductor ripple of +/-5%. (3 points) b) Find real part numbers (L, C, MOSFET for S, and diode D) that can be used for this design. Attach the datasheets of the components you select. Hint: You can use online or printed catalogs from electronic part suppliers (e.g. Digikey, Mouser, Newark, etc.). Make sure you first find the desired current and voltage minimum ratings of each part. (3 points) c) Bonus 1: Find at least three parasitic elements introduced by each part: e.g., series resistance of L, C, S, and D, and voltage drops in S and D. (2 points) d) Bonus 2: S requires a gate-drive circuit to switch properly. What is a gate-drive circuit? Show any references. (2 points)
