BACKGROUND
This informal survey is a mini replication of the survey conducted on February to April 2009 in selected areas of Metro Manila, and, cities and municipalities representing Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. The original survey was conducted by the Asian Institute of Journalism and Communication (AIJC).1 Brief discussion of the results can be found here2 and the entire report - Survey on Internet Use by Filipino School Children - can be downloaded here.3 This brief study is one of the requirements of Ed 234.1, a course on Media and Technology Application In Education under Del Hernandez and Joselito Olpoc.

I. GENERAL METHODOLOGY
A. Research Design and Instrument The mini survey will be using the same design as in the original one: a descriptive research design using a one-shot survey technique. The adapted questionnaire was supplied by the instructor of the course - Joselito Olpoc and was encoded using Google Forms and published online. The digital version of the survey was made active online only for the duration of the survey (see Appendix A). The online survey questionnaire4 can no longer be viewed at this time since accepting responses were disabled by this researcher to block possible unsolicited responses from uninvited guests to the page and accidentally adding data other than the targeted sample. (Upon request, this researcher is willing to share the questionnaire to other interested researcher.) B. Survey Area and Sample The respondents were taken from the school where this researcher teaches. Maligaya High School is a public school located in the suburbs of Metro Manila, a relocation site of some informal settlers from nearby cities and migrants from the provinces.

At first it was decided to calculate the sample size using Slovins formula5 (at 95 confidence level) that suggested a 358 respondents. The 358 would-be

respondents were then stratified across the year level and section as well as according to gender (see Appendix B). Table 1. Distribution of the Sample Across Year Level and Gender

Because of the morning session teaching load of this researcher, the sample were taken from the afternoon sessions instead where second and third year high school students were assigned. C. Limitations The actual filling up of the on-line survey was scheduled for 2 days for both of the 17 sections of Grade 8 and the 15 sections of Year III totaling 186 respondents, inviting 4 to 6 sections at a time, each having 5 to 6 representative (see Appendix A). Of the expected 186 survey takers, only 122 were able to proceed to the computer room either they were not permitted or the class was having a major activity. Another factor that contributed to the decline of the respondents was that the newly delivered 50 computers from the Deped Computerization Program (DCP) crashed on the second day of the survey. The network just could not detect the internet connection. Since the computers were new, the phenomenon was unexpected. The survey did not proceed on the second day. D. Online Survey Procedure Respondents who were permitted by their subject teachers were assisted to the computer room where the online survey page was already open and ready for filling-up. Student who were not computer literate, were assisted by one of the senior students who were requested by this researcher to assist. Further instructions were given on how to click on option and check buttons, when they are to be used, clicked once or more than once, and how to type on text boxes.

II. RESULTS OF THE SURVEY

The summary of responses generated by Google Forms based on 122 recorded responses can be viewed on this page.6 This researcher followed the structure of the SUMMARY OF NATIONWIDE FINDINGS of the published report of the 2010 original survey.7 PART 1: INTERNET ACCESS Incidence of Internet Usage Of the 122 recorded responses, 5 did not click on this item on the on-line form. Majority (96%) of the sample from 2nd and 3rd year students said they use the internet as compared to some (4%) who do not.

III. DISCUSSION OF THE RESULTS THROUGH A COMPARISON WITH THE RESEARCH

The discussion will follow the flow of presentation as in chapter 6 (Conclusions) of the original survey.8 On Computer Literacy 112 out of 122 respondents corroborated the original findings that Filipino schoolchildren are computer literate. In a span of 3 years since the original survey was conducted, a 96% internet users is a big jump from the highest reported data of 60%. On Non-Internet Users Among non-internet users, female children enrolled in this public school are also the majority like in the 2010 survey. Most of the non-users belong to the group 13-15 (80%) or Grade 8 (60%). The figure appeared dropping when the respondents grow older or move-up in the academic level. Illiteracy and parental permission are not the top reason for unable to use the internet but rather having no internet connection or access or time to access either at home or at

18

school. This seems to suggest that with an internet connection or access, there would be very few non-internet users. On Gender Bias The F-test calculation of Microsoft Excels Data Analysis Toolpak, shows that there is a gender bias in internet access which is different from the original survey stating a 50-50 data. This means that in this sample, boys access the internet often than girls.

On Internet Access and Age Since sample comprises mostly of one age group with a minority of respondents who are over-age for the year level, neither it can infer whether it is an early or a late user, nor can state which age group is higher or lower in internet access. Internet Venues Like the original survey and The Synovate Media Atlas July 2008-June 2009 study, Internet caf (36%) is the preferred place to access the internet than at home (24%). However, the percentages is lower than the two earlier studies. This Survey 36% 24% AIJC9 84% 59% SMA10 54% 47%

Compared to AIJCs 70% broadband connection at home, this sample is closer at 64%. On Use of the Internet Unlike the original finding, internet is now used for school work purposes next only to connecting with friends. Entertainment purposes are still above buying and selling. The later seems only appealing to a very few students. What appears to be more appealing is playing a game or downloading/uploading an image or video or music like in the original survey. On Most Frequently Visited Site Since Friendster has ceased to be a social networking site, Facebook replaced it with 82 counts. However, in this sample it is only secondary to YouTube (92 counts) and Google (89 counts) contrary to the original findings. YouTube might be top in the list since nowadays a lot of YouTube videos are hyperlinked in Facebook. And once opened, YouTube will link to a similar post giving browsers an opportunity to visit YouTube more often than Facebook. On Top Five Favorite Online Games With respect to online games, this sample follows the trend in the internet. Candy crush is on top. Two favorite online games in the AIJC survey remains at the top 5 Counter Strike and DOTA which involves violence that may increase childrens aggression according to some psychosocial researches. This Survey Candy Crush Y8 Counter Strike GTA DOTA AIJC Audition DOTA Ran/Ran Online Cabal Online and Counter Strike

20

On Email Emailing like in AIJC findings appears to be not as attractive as the other web applications. This sample might also regard email as too formal. On Wikipedia The findings of this survey differ when it comes to Wiki. Only 13% use it compared to the original 68%. Perhaps it is replaced by Google and YouTube, since these two contains a lot information other than plain entertainment.
