Diana Zavjalova of Latvia Wins 2013 USBC Queens

By Matt Cannizzaro - USBC HENDERSON, Nev. - Latvia's Diana Zavjalova became the first foreign player in more than two decades to win the United States Bowling Congress Queens as she defeated USBC Hall of Famer Leanne Hulsenberg of North Ogden, Utah, 190-160, at Sunset Station's Strike Zone Bowling Center. The 22-year-old right-hander was the first No. 1 seed since 2009 to secure the title, and she did so in her first USBC Queens appearance. Hall of famer Carol Gianotti of Australia was the last foreign player to claim the coveted crown, doing so in 1989, two years before Zavjalova was born. The televised finals will air on ESPN2 on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. EDT. "There are just so many feelings right now, but excitement is at the top of the list," said Zavjalova, who earned $20,000 and the traditional Queens tiara. "This is the first time I have bowled in this event, I was the leader and I was able to beat a hall of famer. I'm living my dream. I just can't believe it." Zavjalova has been successful under the television lights before, helping Webber International to the women's title at the 2012 USBC Intercollegiate Team Championships, but the experience is much different when you're out there alone. Despite being nervous, Zavjalova felt confident with her first few shots, though the 10 pin didn't agree. After missing one in the second frame, she was able to refocus, and the pins started to cooperate. "I was mad on the inside, but I knew I had to let it go," said Zavjalova, who struck in the sixth, seventh and eighth frames to put the game out of reach. "I started fresh after the open, and even though I left another 10 pin, I made it and kept trying to throw good shots." Hulsenberg, who has made more than 100 television appearances in her career, threw 15 strikes in her first two matches but was plagued with poor carry in the finale. The 1999 Queens champion missed two single-pin spares late in the game to ultimately cost her a chance at becoming the ninth bowler in history with two Queens victories. She took home $10,000 for the runner-up finish. In the semifinal, Hulsenberg struck eight times as she defeated Shayna Ng of Singapore, 249-172. Ng, who was never lower than second in the standings all week, left splits in the fourth and fifth frames and wasn't able to recover. Hulsenberg started her first game on TV since winning the 2011 Bowling's U.S. Women's Open at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, with a missed 7 pin before getting comfortable. She then rattled off a string of five strikes to build a 30-pin lead over Jennifer Higgins of Westerville, Ohio, and advanced to the semifinal with a 235-184 win. In the evening's opening match, Higgins trailed after six frames but made a late charge with three consecutive strikes and cruised past USBC Hall of Famer and two-time Queens champion Lynda Barnes of Double Oak, Texas, 205-173. The Queens is open to any female USBC member, and with this year's event coming just after the World Tenpin Bowling Association World Championships, the field included 202 players representing 15 countries. Other international Queens winners include Kazue Inahashi of Tokyo in 1984 and Katsuko Sugimoto, also from Tokyo, in 1981 and 1982.

HENDERSON, Nev. - Team USA swept the silver and gold medals in the women's doubles at the 2013 World Tenpin Bowling Association World Championships. Stefanie Nation and Shannon O'Keefe defeated teammates Missy Parkin and Kelly Kulick, 482-438, in the gold-medal match at Sunset Station's Strike Zone Bowling Center. Venezuela's Karen Marcano and Alicia Marcano shared the bronze medal with Australia's Ann-Maree Putney and Carol Gianotti. Nation and O'Keefe built a 30-pin lead in the championship match and secured the win when O'Keefe struck in the final frame. Nation fired a 258 game, while O'Keefe shot 224. Kulick had 245, and Parkin shot 193. "Obviously you want to win, but when you bowl your teammates it takes a little of the pressure off because you know your country is going to win no matter what," O'Keefe said. "It's hard to describe what it feels like to do what you love and represent your country like this." Nation threw seven strikes in a row from the second frame to the eighth in the title match and bowled a clean game en route to the gold medal. "Winning a gold medal for your country is amazing, and this just feels awesome," Nation said. "At the end of the day, we wanted the U.S. to win and that's what happened." In the semifinals, Kulick fired the first 300 game by a woman in this year's World Championships as she and Parkin defeated the Venezuelans, 483-373. O'Keefe and Nation advanced to the final match by knocking off the Australians, 469-430. The four teams advanced to the semifinals by virtue of their performances in the six games of qualifying earlier in the day. The Marcano sisters fired a blistering 2,880, a 240 average, to lead the qualifying. The score was just 21 pins short of the World Championships record.

PBA50 Tour Veteran Kerry Painter, Local Star Tom Adcock Win PBA50 Senior/Super Senior Doubles Classic
Jerry Schneider - PBA DECATUR, Ill. The doubles team of PBA50 Tour veteran Kerry Painter and local standout Tom Adcock combined for their first PBA50 Tour title by winning the PBA50 Senior/Super Senior Doubles Classic presented by Brunswick at Spare Time Lanes. The pair beat two of PBAs alltime greats, Hall of Famers Johnny Petraglia of Jackson, N.J. and Wayne Webb of Columbus, Ohio, 267-187, in the Baker format championship match. I could tell within the first five minutes that we were going to click together, said Painter, who owns two PBA50 regional titles and has a best PBA50 Tour finish of third which came in this seasons United States Bowling Congress Senior Masters. I didnt know Tom before we bowled the tournament but it didnt take long at all to develop confidence in each other. This is a special moment for me to win after six years bowling on the PBA50 (Tour), the 60year-old Painter added. Bowling two of the greats that I watched on TV in a situation like this is something I never would have believed. For Adcock, a 51-year-old IT specialist from Decatur and a self-described tournament weekend warrior, it was an emotional win. It couldnt be any more special to win this tournament, said Adcock who just became a grandfather last week. Im just feeling a lot of emotion right now. Im thankful for PBA having this tournament here because Im not able to bowl a lot of tournaments because of my work and family commitments. Kerrys very positive and I picked up on that right away, Adcock added. He has a game where he keeps the ball in play which worked well with my game. There were times when he was bowling fantastic and I wasnt and times when maybe I was bowling better but in the end we were able to work together. Adcock owns one PBA regional title and also owns a USBC Open Championships team title. In the semifinal match, Painter and Adcock beat the doubles team of Emilio Mora Jr. of Lakeland, Fla. and Hall of Famer Pete Weber of St. Ann, Mo., 220194. In the opening match, Mora and Weber beat Bill Henson of Westerville, Ohio and 10-time PBA Tour winner Bryan Goebel of Shawnee, Kan., 236-226. The tournament used a doubles format where a senior player (ages 50-59) and a super senior (ages 60 and over) were paired up for match play based on their qualifying positions in their respective divisions. The Baker format requires players to alternate frames in a game to combine for one score.
