My family is united in the desire to establish a

mission for churches of Christ in London, still one

of the world's greatest centers.

Our work will include a vision of developing a fellowship of churches who will be self-sustaining, with a view to. raising their own leaders. In short, the goal will be to do with the remaining years of our lives what we attempted to do in New England, and in which we have had a small degree of success.

Our immediate work will also include helping the new church started last summer in London, establish ing a new congregation in a different part of the

workers to the field, and organizing house-to-house
teaching.

LONDON CHRISTIAN MISSION

The Fred Miller family, after completing 21 years as pioneers of churches of Christ in New England, has answered invitations affirmatively to est ablish a mission for churches of Christ in London, England. After four visits to England resulting in fruit borne of the Holy Spirit, the Mtller family has decided to move to London. In March of 1976 and later in December of the same year 'get acquainted" visits to existing
British "Restoration" churches of Christ led to several invitations to

return to help with vacation Bible schools and other basic evangelistic
work.

In the summer of 1977, the Millers led a team of eleven, ministers and Bible colle^ students, to work in London and Manchester. As a result, attendances were increased among three existing churches/ four new Christ

ians were baptised, sever<\Lwere restored to faith, and a new church, now
numbering 30 in attendance, was established in the Balham section of
London.

In January of 1978, a return for a revival meeting realized similar good results; several confessions of faith, two baptisms, and increased
attendance in the Balham church.

As a result of urging and invitations, as well as a burden being laid upon the Millers by the Holy Spirit through these results, i t was
determined to establish the London Christian Mission. The Millers will

continue to be sponsored by the Dorr Drive Church of Christ in Rutland, Vermont. Their forwarding agent. Bill Doty, is one of the local leaders of the Rutland congregation.
Plans call for the Millers to move to London in September of this year, where they will start a church meeting in another part of the city while continuing to help the new church in Balham, A team of Bible college students has already been recruited to "intern" in the summer of *79 to do basic house-to-house calling and hold vacation Bible schools and home studies. Fred willreturn first to secure housing for the farailyv A mission center is being looked for. A building or complex large enough
to be a mission center, to house visitors and interns, and to have Bible classes, a day school and church services, is needed. Your sincere prayer support is requested while these plans are being formulated.

The goals in mind are, 1. To establish churches of Christ in London, as the main thrust; 2. A very important secondary goal will be to exploit the oppatunity in London of evangelizing nationals of nations now closed or closing to missionary activity by westerners. Particularly is the Chinese population open to the evangelicals at this time. The Pakistanis and Nigerians are also examples of nationals open to evangelization, who may return to their own countries to evangelize, 3. Leading the way for other workers by finding opportunities of employment or creating oppor tunities, by, perhaps, 4. starting a Christian elementary school.
Prayer Support is needed and desired, especially in the light of the

potential of seeing the church spread afar.

EVANGELISTIC CENTER SOUGHT

Before we left the United States we deHscribed

the building that we would be

seeking in England.. It would be more than a house,an evangelistic center is what we called it.. It would serve the following needs: 1. house my family with enough room also for 4. a large room for church assembly. Although this is a tall order for one building we have found one idfeal^ office-study. 2. It must

have extra rooms for visitors, interns (25 due in 79) send helpers. $. Class r room space for an elementary school and later (perhaps sooner) a Bible Collegeo

located in the South -^ondon borough of Croydon. Surrounded by a beautifjrl park the building is set on 1 acre of ground with parking space for 6 cars on paved
ground. A very beautiful prospect I

The accomidation is on three floors, the top floor having 6 bedrooms,, the middle floor having 8 rooms which would house my family and the ground floor 'has an entry hall leading to a entrance reception hall 26* by 30*, large enough for 70 to 80 persons to assemble comfortably. There are also 3 large rooms which could hold classes of 30 to 35. There is an office,, the kitchen iso institutional type with preparation romms and pantry and an annex with a bedroom on the first floor. There are 5 bathrooms.. There is also a garage and a green house on the nicely landscaped grounds among mature ornimental trees and plantings. All these features make the building worth many times the price, "e would have to pay much more for far less in other situations

here in ^ondon.

All the space can be used now with ample room for growth for

some time to come.

The reason the PRICE ISiLOW is because i t was used as an old peoples home#

(Therefore all fire precautions needed for a school are already in).
for a house hunter's market.

Now on

the market, the planning board will not let i t be divided into apartments Thus institutional buyers are interested in the property but it is a white elephant

However it is idealy suited for our needs. Almost a miraculous find We hav done much preliminary praying. We found the building the 2nd week we were here and have backed away from i t to give other possibilities a chance of being raised but each time we have been brought back to this building. Several real

obstacles have been removed ( another bjry? has been removed though others are interestedand we are now in front)..
Our ability now to buy the property is based on financial arrangements

REPORT FROM LONDON, ENGLAND

SPECIAL PROBLEMS RELATED TO REAL ESTATE PROBLEMS IN ENGLAND

1 At present there is a poor exchange rate. At approx. S2.00 per Ipii. the dollar is uoier valued by at least 12%. 2. In flation in England, mucii worse than here is very difficult to keep pace with. Real estate prices have doubled twice in the past two years! Thus a house that sold for L 6000 is now L 19jOOO and one that sold for L 10,000 is now L 35,000. Should w retreat from physical obstacles in the face of spiritual victories? Mortgage laoney if
available is at which is not a fixed rate which means they can add more interest to the

loan without consulting you!

Last year mortgage rates were at l8%

It is difficult to borrow

money in England even at high rates I was turned down at two banks on what looked like beautiful business to me. Although a mortgage broker got me a favorable report later, too late.
HISTORY OF A SET BACK

Certainly no-a defeat.

The building in Croydon whicri we attempted to purchase appears to be out of our hands.

We

were very disappointed and momentarily disheartened to lose such an absolutely perfect building to serve our purposes of evangelism. However I am trying to understand the Lord's will in the
matter and bend my own will to His.

What Happened?

Real Estate Search

When we arrived in London, after purchasing a car we began looking at Real Estate each day. We looked at all varieties and price ranges in a number of locations. After a week we found the

Croydon building and immediately realized its value, having seen other buildings priced alike bifc.
not nearly as useful.
Give Time For the Lord to Lead

We wanted to give Go opportunity to show the way so we waited a week before making an offer. At that time we found another buyer was trying to secure financing, thus it seemed that if it were bought then we could assume that God did not want us there. However a week later the
opportunity to purchase was given to us , IF we could raise the financing
Financing

We made application at 2 banks and a mortgage broker for 550,000 loan. While we waited their pleasure we added promises of help to our assets of 83000 from the Balham church and S2000 from Neville Shaw other assets and commitments brought the total to $46,000,

The agent now called. Another party was becoming interested, "Did I have the financing?" "No, not all of it , but give me two more weeks!" The very next day Neville Shaw wrote me a check for an additional Si0,000 toward the building, so concerned was he that we secure this mission center for churches of Christ. I took the check to my lawyer and dirscted hini

Not Cast Down

These conclusions are apparent to us. 1. We still need an evangelistic center, not just a home. If we invest our money in a house we will not be prepared to buy if opportunity arises
