Introduction
Welcome! The purpose of this module is to act as a catalyst, to help you identify your goals by
presenting you with information to which you may react.

The reason for this is simple: I have years of professional software development experience.
While every client that I work with has different needs, I have noticed one common theme:
People explain their needs better when I present them with something to which they can react
than when I just ask them to explain what they want.

With that idea in mind, this book includes a variety of different types of goals. It also presents
a variety of stimuli. These include words, photographs, art and poetry. It is natural to react in
some way when you see these pages. You may or may not agree with the sentiments
expressed, or like a particular piece of art. However, there is an excellent chance that you
will react. That is this book’s purpose: to serve as a catalyst, to help you identify goals more
easily than if you just sat down with a blank piece of paper and started to write out your goals.

This book identifies a variety of categories of goals. There is NO right or wrong order to these
categories, and what seems important to you at one point in your life, may feel completely
irrelevant at another time. Here is why I have included them: Part of the hassle that some
people experience with goal setting is that their focus may be too tightly directed. For
example, someone looking for a job may concentrate only career goals to the detriment of
health, relationship and other goals. When this happens, there is a lack of balance.

I suggest printing out the pages that seem relevant, writing one goal in each block, three-hole
punching both sides of the paper and inserting the printed pages into a three-ring hole binder.
Alternatively, you might want to try printing them on index stock, and GBC binding them from
the top. That way you will have created an easel that will stand up on your desk.

If you have a category of goal that is not included, but is important to you, consider this idea:
Print out an extra copy of a page, cross out the goal that is identified, and write in the goal
category that is important to you.

From time-to-time, you may wish to review the goals you have written down to see if you are
making progress that pleases you. In addition, you may occasionally wish to reprint the pages,
list your current goals, and compare those with your previous responses.

By the way, this module that is part of a larger system. This particular module is designed to
help you identify your goals. It is not designed to track your progress towards reaching them.
That function is accomplished by using the day planner modules.

Enjoy the process!

Acknowledgments
There are so many people that I would like to acknowledge, but no one would read
a list that long. Therefore, I’ll just acknowledge the people who have had the
greatest influence on this work.

I offer my heartfelt thanks to Liz Sheppard and Stephen Hughes for being there to
look at my work from time to time, and for the support that they have offered.

I also offer my heartfelt thanks to:

• My aunt, Beulah Walsh, who has always found value in my writing. (I love
your poetry.)

• Liz Sheppard and Stephen Hughes, who have taken the time to review many
drafts of this book’s predecessors.

• George Winston, whose music has inspired me, particularly his version of
the Pachabel Cannon. For me this piece is a constant inspiration to seek
and out prosper from personal growth.

• Skip Bentuzzi, of Northern Light, Raley's Shopping Center, Incline

Village, NV. who believed in my concepts, and encouraged me.

• The writings of Anthony Robbins, many of which I thought were excellent,

but which did not provide me with the full solutions that I needed. Hence,
this book.

• All of the people whom I know through Toastmasters International,

especially the members of San Mateo Toastmasters, Point of Order
Toastmasters and Independence Toastmasters.

• Dr. Jerome Motto, Mr. Len Mayo, Ms. Marti Benjamin and many of my other
friends in Unitarian Universalists of San Mateo.

• Harry Cardaris, Marty Fox, Lee Bollinger, and my other friends through
PenNet.

• All of my friends, every one of which has had some impact on this book.

Five Quotes that Inspired Me
At times our own light goes out and is rekindled by a spark from
another person. Each of us has cause to think with deep gratitude of
those who have lighted the flame within us.

- Albert Schweitzer

Today is the first day of the rest of your life.

- Native American Saying

I am only one
But still I am one.
I cannot do everything,
But still, I can do something.
And because I cannot do everything.
I will not refuse to do the something that I can do.

- Edward Everett Hale

We Shall Overcome

We shall overcome
We shall overcome
We shall overcome some day.

Oh, deep in my heart

I do believe
We shall overcome some day!

- Martin Luther King, Jr.

If There is to Be Peace

If there is to be peace in the world,

There must be peace in the nations.

If there is to be peace in the nations,

There must be peace in the cities.

If there is to be peace in the cities,

There must be peace between neighbors.

If there is to be peace between neighbors,

There must be peace in the home.

If there is to be peace in the home,

There must be peace in the heart.
