Abstract
National Bank of Pakistan is one of the premier banks of Pakistan, It has its headquarters in Karachi, It is Government controlled bank and played a unique role both as a commercial bank and as a trustee of public finances. Operating through a network of 1445 domestic and 23 overseas branches .It has been art the forefront of national economic development .Its contribution in the development of small and medium size entrepreneurs is significant .It is credited with introducing such innovative schemes as Peoples credit scheme, Supervised Agriculture scheme, Saiban schemes for homeless and Educational loan scheme on compassionate grounds. Focus of this study is to establish the link between the theory and practice which is core function of the professional individual in the corporate, public and non govtmental organizations. Inter-alia Human Resource Division of the national Bank of Pakistan is on the line of new modern theories and techniques and meeting the international required standards where functions of HRM i.e. recruitment ,selection, training, retention, and development are performed, how ever national bank some times also hire the services of consultants like Sidat Haider Murshid. Thorough study and analysis of the HR policies of the National Bank was made through various available sources it was found that most of the HR policies of the national bank are compatible to the international required standards however there is a little discrepancy due to various political, social, demographic and religious factors contingency approach and adhokcism is also adopted .to eliminate this discrepancy recommendations have also been suggested.

Executive Summary
Banking has always been the main field of interest for most of the students of business administration. It is also an academic requirement to undergo internship therefore the main purpose behind this report is partial fulfilment of requirements, for the degree of BBA. The objective is that report encompasses the experience of the internee, his/her learning, and analysis in light of which recommendations are made. In the first chapter introduction to the report, background of study, scope of the study and merits of the study are given. The second chapter is about introduction to the organization, its historical background, how it came into being, what the major reasons behind it were and what areas of banking it covers. Corporate profile of the bank consisting of Board of Directors, audit committee legal advisors and NBP head office in Karachi. The organizational structure of NBP, its core values, financial highlights all are provided in this chapter. The third chapter is the major portion of the report. The areas covered in human resource management are the overview of HR policies and practices in NBP, job analysis practices including job description, job specification and job evaluation of the organization. An important function of HR recruitment and selection its procedures and the selection process used are discussed. The information regarding the candidates who are selected and the orientation given to them so that they are better socialized with the organization. The development function, need assessment and providing training accordingly to cater to those needs, the complete study of appraisal systems, and the methods used for evaluation and the criteria for promotions. Study of how rewards are given and the pay structures in the concerned organization. Maintenance function consisting of benefits administration: medical, insurance, voluntary benefits, retirement benefits, golden handshake and issues relating to occupational health and safety in NBP. Disciplinary procedures, penalties and punishments and the role of unions in the organizations. The last topic covered in this chapter is International HRM as NBP have overseas branches also so the policies and practices operating there are also studied. The 4th chapter of the report covers the analysis of report and the findings that were seen. SWOT analysis of the organization was done as it acts as a mirror for the management to

know the strengths and weaknesses so that it can take appropriate corrective actions. The management should develop elaborate plans for capitalizing on the available opportunities. The major problems observed were wastage of time, inappropriate reward systems, no employee involvement and reasons for low customer satisfaction were discussed. The end of the report is about recommendations and conclusion.
