German industry first began working on heavy tank designs in 1937. When the German Panzers in Russia encountered the Soviet T-34's and KV-1's in
1941 it was all too apparent that a new heavy tank was needed. Ultimately, this resulted in a specification for a 45-ton tank with an 88mm gun, heavy armor,
speed and manuverability. Production was ordered to start in August 1942. It began at a rate of 25 tanks per month and peaked in April 1944 at a rate of
104 per month. It took 300,000 man hours to build one Tiger, almost twice as much time as a Panther required.
The design program had been known as the Tigerprogram and in March of '42 the Germans began referring to the panzer as the Tiger. The early production
Tigers had rather tall commander cupolas which used bullet proof glass as its vision ports. Other visible characteristics were a top opening commander’s
hatch, smoke dischargers on the turret sides, rubber rimmed road wheels, dual headlights and Feifel air cleaners.

The Tiger was the most powerful tank in the world. The 88mm gun was extremely powerful and the heavy armor made it almost impervious to attack.
Even though its fearsomeness was to grow to almost mythical proportions, its combat debut was less than impressive.
Mid production models saw the replacement of the commander’s cupola which was now shorter and used seven periscopes instead of vision ports.
The commander’s hatch now swivels to the side, an MG34 ring mount was added to the turret top for anti-aircraft defense, a gun travel lock at the rear
was added and the dual headlights were replaced with a single centrally mounted headlight. The rubber rimmed road wheels were retained but the first
outer wheels were often removed due to the muddy and snowy terrain on the Eastern front. Zimmerit was applied from August 1943 onwards. The smoke
dischargers, pistol ports on the turret sides and Feifel air cleaners were discontinued. About 470 units of mid production series were produced between
July 1943 and January 1944.

O fficially designated Panzerkampfwagen VI Sd.Kfz 181, Tiger Ausf. E, the Tiger tank was the first tank to use animal names by the German army
(such as Panther, Tiger, Elephant) as a propaganda tool to draw attention. Production started in July 1942 with the first Tigers delivered in August 1942.
There is only one official production version for the Tiger 1, although several modifications had been made as suggested by battle experienced crews.
These modifications began to be known as the early, mid and late production Tigers.
Late production Tigers are most easily identified as the rubber rimmed road wheels were replaced with steel road wheel, the gun travel lock was
discontinued and the gun sight was changed from a binocular TZF9b to a monocular TZF9c.

Tank KV-2 from the Pz Abt zBV-66. Pz Abt zBV-66 was formed for the cancelled landing operation on Malta. It had many uncommon
AFVs: PzKpfw-IF, PzKfw-IJ, PzKfw-IIF2 with 80mm frontal armour, KV's and T-34s (rare side of one T-34 can be seen on lower shot).
Later those tanks were transmitted into the 12nd Panzer Division and were utilised in Demyansk region in 1942.
No Russian tanks went from zbv 66 to Panzer Division 12. The T-34/M41 of zbv 66 were the ones transferred to ski jaeger div 1. 1941 in

When the Soviets entered the Winter War, the SMK, KV and a third design, the T-100, were sent to be tested in combat conditions. The heavy armour of
the KV proved highly resistant to Finnish anti-tank weapons, making it more effective than the other designs. It was soon put into production, both as the
original 76-mm-armed KV-1 Heavy Tank and the 152 mm howitzer-mounting assault gun, the KV-2 Heavy Artillery Tank.
The 45-ton KV outweighed most other tanks of the era, being about twice as heavy as the heaviest contemporary German tanks. The KV's strengths included
armor that was impenetrable by any tank-mounted weapon then in service except at point-blank range, good firepower, and good traction on soft ground.
It also had serious flaws: it was very slow and difficult to steer, the transmission was unreliable, and the ergonomics were poor, with limited visibility and
no turret basket. Furthermore its weight tended to strain smaller bridges. As improvements were made, no thought was put into upgrading the engine,
making it slower as more armor was added.

The M4 Sherman was the primary tank produced by the United States for its own use and the use of its Allies during World War II. Production of the M4
Medium tank exceeded 50,000 units, and its chassis served as the basis for numerous other armored vehicles such as tank destroyers, tank retrievers
and self-propelled artillery. In the United Kingdom, the M4 was dubbed the Sherman after Union General William Tecumseh Sherman, following the British
practice of naming its American-built tanks after famous American Civil War generals. Subsequently the British name found its way into common use in
the US. Following WWII, the M4 medium tank was used by the US until the end of the Korean War. Many nations continued to use the tank in both training
and combat roles into the late 20th century.

The M1 Abrams main battle tank is the principal combat tank of the United States Army and the United States Marine Corps, with three main versions
being deployed starting in 1980: the M1, M1A1, and M1A2. The latest versions of the M1A2 have a new armor and electronics package. It is named
after General Creighton Abrams, former Army Chief of Staff and commander of the Army's 37th Armored Regiment.
The M1 Abrams was designed by Chrysler Defense (in 1979, General Dynamics Land Systems Division purchased Chrysler Defense Division) and is
currently produced by General Dynamics Corporation in Lima, Ohio, and first entered US Army service in 1980. An improved version of the M1, the M1A1,
was introduced in 1985. The M1A1 has the M256 120 mm smoothbore cannon developed by Rheinmetall AG of Germany for the Leopard 2, improved
armor, and a CBRN protection system. The M1A2 is a further improvement of the M1A1 with a commander's thermal viewer and weapon station, position
navigation equipment, digital data bus and a radio interface unit.

The development of improved components for the Leopard 2 was finally favoured, and in 1989 the Leopard 2 KVT was built and tested. Two prototypes
were built in 1991 by Krauss-Maffei for the improvement program, known as KWS. An alternative improvement program was initiated, divided into three
stages, and known as KWS I, KWS II, and KWS III. KWS II was the development of increased armor protection for the crew and improved command and
control system capabilities (OBS: This program resulted in the Leopard 2 A5).
On October 1991, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and Germany decided for cooperation in a development program for KWS II. The first Leopard 2 A5 were
officially delivered to the German Army School on 30 November 1995. Chassis of the sixth, seventh, and eight batches were to be used for the conversion
program and to receive reworked and modified turrets taken from tanks of the first four batches. Modernization of the chassis were to be carried out by
Krauss-Maffei and MaK while Wegmann and Rheinmetall became responsible for the turrets.

The Leopard 2 is a German main battle tank built by the German company Krauss-Maffei-Wegmann. Its different versions have served in the armed forces
of Germany and ten other European countries, as well as non-European countries. The Leopard 2A6 includes a longer L55 gun, an auxiliary engine, improved
mine protection and an air-conditioning system. The German Army is upgrading 225 2A5 tanks to 2A6 configuration, the first of which was delivered in March 2001.
The Leopard 2 A6 is protected by third generation composite armor, with the additional reinforcement to the turret frontal and lateral armor with externally
mounted add-on armor modules. In the event of weapon penetration through the armour, a spall liner reduces the number of fragments and narrows the
fragment cone. The spall liner also provides noise and thermal insulation. The reinforcement provides protection against multiple strike, kinetic energy
rounds and shaped charges.

The Type 90(Japanese: きゅうまるしき せんしゃ Kanji: 90式戦車) is the current main battle tank (MBT) of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF).
JAPAN GROUND SELF DEFENSE FORCE It is built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and was designed as a replacement for all deployed Type 61s and a portion of their Type 74 tanks.
After the adoption of the Type 74, the Japanese High Command was already looking for a superior, completely indigenous tank design to defeat the
Soviet T-72. As a result, development of a prototype, the TK-X MBT began in 1982. Testing, improvements, and designs were modified and constructed
until 1989 when Japan formally acknowledged the Type-90 in 1990.

The T-72 was the most common tank used by the Red Army from the 1970s to the collapse of the Soviet Union. It was also exported to other Warsaw Pact
countries, Finland, India, Iran, Iraq, Syria and Yugoslavia, as well as being copied elsewhere, both with and without licenses. Many Western analysts regard
this as worrisome because, at least theoretically, its 125 mm 2A46 main gun is capable of destroying any modern main battle tank in the world today,
including the M1 Abrams.
The T-72 exhibits many design features shared with other tank designs of Soviet origin. Some of these are viewed as deficiencies in a straight comparison
to NATO tanks, but most are a product of the way these tanks were envisioned to be employed, based on the Soviets' practical experiences in World War II.
