Research Internships for Undergraduates

Researchers who wish to engage in a meaningful cooperation with a young German research assistant will be brought together with students in the early stages of their studies who have an excellent background in the fields of engineering, natural sciences, and related disciplines, including earth sciences. These students have the ambition to work abroad and gain hands-on research experience in their fields.

I gained a lot of new knowledge and experience. My internship brought me together with many different colleagues from all over the world which enhanced my intercultural competencies tremendously.

About DAAD
The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is a publicly funded self-governing organisation of the German Higher Education institutions. Our aim is to promote international academic relations - particularly through the exchange of students, postgraduates and academic staff - thereby contributing to Germanys cultural policy. Our programs are available for all countries and cover all disciplines; they apply to Germans as well as all other nationalities. DAAD also supports the internationalisation of German universities via special funding programs and by offering information and marketing services.

How does RISE worldwide work?

I

Researchers from universities and governmentally funded labs can submit a project offer to which German students may then apply. DAAD will publish your project offer and promote the program to German students. You will be involved in the selection of the candidates for your project. DAAD will match the best candidates to the projects. A successful applicant will receive a DAAD scholarship to carry out a research stay in your working group during the summer (from June to October for a max. of 3 months). Exact dates can be arranged individually. (RISE worldwide is an extension of DAAD's successful RISE in North America program researchers from any country are invited to post a project offer!)

Researchers from accredited universities and non-profit research institutions register online and submit project offers, including a one-page project description in the fall (October November). DAAD posts the internship offers in a database on its website. German applicants register online to review the project offers. They apply from December through mid-January to a maximum of three projects. The German applicants profiles are checked for eligibility by DAAD staff and are then activated to be reviewed online by the researchers. The prospective hosts are asked to provide DAAD with a list ranking the most qualified applicants. On the basis of these ranking lists, the academic credentials of the students, and the demand for a project, DAAD makes its final decisions, notifies successful hosts, and awards scholarships in March.

This academic research exchange is one of the best experiences in my life! I am really having a great time in and outside the lab.
Participating Student, RISE in North America 2009

I thank DAAD very much for organizing and carrying out this valuable initiative! I have been very impressed by the outstanding educational background of all applicants and their high potential as future researchers.

RISE worldwide 2014

After the very successful third round of RISE worldwide - in which DAAD supported over 250 projects by funding undergraduate German students working as research assistants - the program is returning in 2014. Research groups from all over the world that are interested in hosting a German research assistant in the summer of 2014 are invited to submit project offers on www.daad.de/rise-programs. What are the features of RISE worldwide? Within this program, research groups, laboratories and doctoral students can apply to host a motivated and well-qualified student from Germany as research intern in their proposed project. The German intern will assist in research and lab work. The students with academic training in the fields of biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences, engineering, medicine, or a closely related field, receive a DAAD scholarship to help cover living expenses and travel costs (for details see www.daad.de/rise-programs). What are the benefits of the program? Researchers in science and engineering profit both professionally and personally: They receive assistance with their research projects, strengthen their ties to Germany and extend their knowledge of German culture, research landscape and higher education system. PhD students are especially encouraged to participate because they in particular can benefit by learning how to be a mentor to younger students. The project also offers an excellent opportunity to establish academic partnerships with universities in Germany or to intensify already existing transatlantic networks. German undergraduate students in science and engineering are exposed to advanced research work while gaining desirable practical experience in their respective fields during the summer. They get the chance to develop intercultural competence and improve their language skills. Moreover, the intensive lab work and leisure time spent together with mentors, colleagues and other interns are a basis for long-lasting friendships.

RISE worldwide Responsibilities of Internship Providers

In order to help you submit a successful project offer which will attract many applications, and should your project be successfully matched with an intern to give you a better idea of your role and responsibilities as mentor of a RISE worldwide intern, DAAD has prepared these guidelines below. The internship offer itself An offer/project description should fulfil the following layout and content criteria: Project description should be detailed but concise (one page minimum, three pages maximum) Letter head of the host institution and/or university (top of the page) Contact information of the internship provider (bottom of the page) Short, but comprehensible outline of the project, the background, and the tasks/responsibilities of the intern Define the knowledge and skills to be acquired by the intern Provide some information about the city or region Please note: Offers/project descriptions containing ONLY textual fragments, formulas and/or bullet points will not be considered as serious or attractive offers by the applicants. Please confirm, if at all possible, that you will be able to provide logistical support to your intern concerning administrative matters at the beginning of his/her stay (e.g. visa, accommodation, residence and/or work permit) it will be recognized as a positive signal by the applicants and potentially strengthen interest in your project offer. Before the internship starts Contact the candidate who has been matched with your project by DAAD and determine the duration of the internship, giving specific start and end dates. Inform DAAD about the exact dates. Assist the intern in finding reasonably priced housing for the time of the internship.

When the intern arrives Welcome the intern to his/her new work/research environment, introduce him/her to new colleagues, and present the rules and regulations in place, including work place safety. Provide the intern with appropriate resources, for example work or lab space and access to a telephone and computer. Point out key objectives of the internship for attention and limit the tasks of the intern to a manageable number. Clearly communicate your expectations and the students responsibilities. Assist your intern with all necessary administrative steps after the arrival.

During the internship When engaging in social activities with your colleagues, invite your intern to come along. Connect your intern with other RISE program interns in your research group (if hosting more than one). For this, please make use of the list of all RISE scholarship holders provided to you by DAAD. Provide your intern with contact details of the International Office at the host institution. Regularly monitor your intern to ensure that tasks and duties are performed as outlined in your project description. Give full recognition to the intern for tasks completed and work well performed. If you are not available as supervisor for the intern during the entire time of his/her internship, please name another contact person who is available for the intern during your absence. Contact DAAD immediately when any major changes regarding the internship occur. Also, please contact DAAD in case your intern falls ill for an extended period of time.

End of the interns stay Give your intern the chance to present his/her results, for example in a presentation or poster session to the entire research team. Evaluate, together with your intern, his or her personal and professional development during the internship. Fill out and sign an internship certificate (document example available on this website). Fill out DAADs final evaluation form.

Thank you! We wish you and your intern a productive and enjoyable time together!
