We have two booklets that we enclose in the packet with nearly all sales at the Bible Book Shop. One student turned up for the School of Evangelism classes, then he missed a

week and this past Saturday phoned that he had to miss but that he planned to be here next Saturday. I would say that the one class we had was very good.
Hopefully, he will keep his next appointment.

What we need for the announced Sunday afternoon interpreted church services are a few of our own people to come from Katiehong to visit and be seen entering and heard singing. I think a few weeks might get things started there, but I certainly can
not do that alone.

My printing log has many entries this month, among items printed were Xhosa tracts, baptismal certificates, church record
keeping loose leaf pages for a binder, the booklet, *'Oiie People! the Challenge of the Restoration Movement", Afrikaans tracts, 7000 impressions of "Minister's Supplies" for the mission to distribute at the Minister's Retreat and the teaching supplies for Daniel. Daniel is still attending evening services and keepibringing all sorts of things to be printed for his graduating class. These arc persons who have failed in the past. He says they have a95% pass rate after his teaching. Amazing! During this month, I bought some ofthe fixtures and the remaining stock from a closed Bible Colfee Bar and Bible Bookshop in Heidelberg. Heidelberg is about twenty miles south of Alberton. Kiyllis and I made two trips down there, the second time hiring a trailer and bringing the fixtures we could use. It was a struggle as those were made of formica covered chip board, which is very heavy, but they make a great difference now that they arc in place. Everything can now be displayed so that it can
really be seen properly.

The new stock has not been here long enough to make a difference, but praises to the Lord, February is setting a new record in
Bible and book turnover. We praise Him too for your faithftil prayers.

Dear Co-Workers;

August, 95

Wc thank tlic Lord that He used us to print over fifty thousand impressions this month. Forty three thousand of these were for the printing of a thousand copies of a Lomwc hymnal to be u.scd in Mozambique. While Portuguese is the official language of Mazambique, Lomwc is spoken by many of the Africans, especially in the northern half. This was a joint effort with Dale and Huey Mason here and Jacob and Nyla Michael who are presently in America. The Masons set the type on their computer and brought the masters to me to be printed. Togctlicr wc assembled a hundred or so that had been started; then Dale was able to locate someone who has an office folding machine, so he took most of Ihe 20,000 sheets remaining to be folded on it. Wc jointly breathed a sigh of relief, but tliey will still have to be assembled and bound, so wc may see them returned as I have a
heavy duty stapler.

I just thank the Lord for Dale's willingness to spend a great deal of time organizing our computer so that wc can use the Word Pcrfcct program to store and print our mailing list, and so that it can handle the scanner we bought a month ago in order to scan and convert over thirty of our early booklets ixom typed to printed layout, improving the layout and using larger, more readable type at the same time. I had started to do this from "scratch", and had completely retyped three of them, but this will greatly speed up the task. Adjustments in Ihe dos and upgrading of the Word Perfect program, which were essential to the operation of the scanner, actually brought it to a complete halt, but we assume it is simply that adjustments have to be made to the installation to match the upgrade. The technician is due today to do that. If your letters arc still not addressed properly it will be because I have never used that facility of the WP software, and I still need to import the addresses and learn how to use them. They do print properly though. Unfortunately neither Dale nor Huey have used tliat part of the programme eitlier! Wc just hope the problem is not that our computer was built in a local computer shop from individual components. I read in a rcccnt newspaper tliat some of these machines simply can never handle the demands of modern software and they should be replaced with brand name machines. I do know that the shop announced it in pcrfcct condition and diat it simply refused to boot-up in my office a half an hour later. It simply "locks" up or "freezes" regularly; sometimes several times a day. I may be
forced to do something about it one of these days.

Phyllis and her helpers had a very successful Vacation Bible School here at Central Cliristian, and the week following, she took the car daily to teach at Kimbcrlcy Road. Our thanks to Sharon and Heidi Mcssimcr who helped here, and to Alicc Fishback who also helped with the tcacliing at both churches.
Plans have gone into high gear for the "All Africa Missionary Conference" to be held at Aletheia Christian Centre here in Johannesburg. Stu Cook informs me tliat 1 was mistaken about the Formula 1 hotels and that rooms can be reserved for the

period. The branch a few doors up tlie street from them will be convenient, and will help with the parking as the car can be left there with a security guard to watch. Most of our local missionaries will also have guests for tlic days of the conference; driving back and fort each day. A family of five from Nairobi is booked to stay with us. Wc could manage two more and probably will.

The work of the Gospel Tract Centre has grown over a span of several years,

andespecially since the purchase of the present buildings in central Alberton of Gauteng Province, Republic of South Africa. We have great hopes for the use
of these buildings to further the work of the Lordin SouthAfrica.
It was about March of 1991 that they first became available for sale. The price at that time was very high, but I made it a matter of prayer, and prayed so

earnestly that one day the Lord broke into my prayer with the words, "Be still,
and know that I am God." I was so stunned that I immediately changcd my

prayer to praise and after that ceased to pray about this particular matter. We had no money to offer, and the advertisements ceased, so we assumed that the
building had been sold.

In October of 1992, the advert appeared again and the asking price was then the equivalent of $106,000. I still had no money, but I again rafiier timidly turned to the Lord in prayer. Within days, a portion of an estate came available,
and was offered anonymously.

II
I8*IT UNTRE

I made an offer in November, and signed the papers in January. On March 3rd

payment was made in ftill. Since then approximately $34000 has been added
from the same source for alterations and improvements. Praises to the Lord
who provided!

The Gospel Tract Centre publishers catalog is now a 16 page booklet offering materials in any of 19 languages, all from our own press. Hiese materials are
stored in basement warehousing until needed in the shop or to catalog shoppers. Hie spacious Bible and book shop now offers those plus a wide variety of other materials from American and African publishers. Job printing is not encouraged, but the "Copy Comer" of the shop does cater to Photocopy service, or Risograph copies and binding service of pre-set copy. Copy for
business cards or letterheads is set on the computer if required.

A Bible Correspondence Lesson desk and computer now has its own area available and we can cope with the demands of this work far easier than before.
Onr aduit classroom is equipped to teach via video tapes, overhead projector,
or white board as needed. Desk chairs arc available for fifteen, but probably

twenty students could be accommodated there. The present small class simply prefers the intimacy of using the work table of the Copy Comer area. The large chapel, office and cry room are presently housing the fledgling Central Christian Church, and I am seeking for a fuU time evangelist to take
over and build that part of the work.

Dear Co-workers,

September 5, 1995

Praise the Lord that after two months of trying to get the serviceman who installed it to get

ourScanner/optical reader/fax working and eventually asking that they either come and collect it or

come get it operating, he showed up and set it right. At least partially so! In the meantime, I did give
up and bought an ordinary fax machine which is left on 24 hours a day, on number 011-27-11-9078651, barring a violent electrical storm that is. (We have some ofthe most violent electrical storms
I have ever seen during the Spring and Summer!)

1have kept the computer busy oflate. It has been upgraded to Dos 6.22, and Word Perfect 6.1, so I am battling now to learn a whole whole new set of terms and methods for doing things. Thankfully, the scanner did not demand Microsoft 95, which arrived with great fanfare earlier this month! One weird thing we are struggling with is that when the phone rings, our computer ball
crashes and we lose what we have been working on at the time, and possibly even have to take the

computer to the shop to have it re-set. it is especially upsetting to get a series ofwrong numbers and have to turn offand start again, and again. Fortunaly Wpwin6.1 keeps what one was working on in memory and asks ifyou want to save it before you do anythiung else. Ifit did not, it would bemore
than an annoyance.

We have printed two smaller booklets and one of 142 pages, which involved printing nearly thirty-thousand pages. (I printed solidly for four days.) That one was an Afrikaans book done for Dale Mason. Their mission ftind paid for all the materials, and Dale and Huey were terrific in that they worked right with me and did all the collating, punching and spiral binding. Dale desperately wanted
them finished before the All Africa Missionary Conference which is now in its second day. He is

teaching in a seminar at Kimberley next week and wants to use it there. We have printed nearly forty thousand pages during August and already September is starting out with a Portuguese book brought by one of the missionaries from Mozambique. We printed 100 copies of this 120 page book yesterday. He wants to finish it and take it back with him after the conference so he is here today
assembling the pages I printed yesterday.

As soon asthe scanner was operative, I started scanning the booklets that we have had only

in typewritten form since the late seventies or early eighties. I have six of them scanned into the computer; five English and one Xhosa. They will all need considerable work yet asthe spacing was
somewhat messed up in the process. As I am still learning how to cope with editing in the new Word Perfect it is going to be a slow process. The scanning and optical reading, even correcting spelling
mistakes where it could not read a few letters are no problem, but the fragmentation is something
again!

We have five guests in our home from Kenya for the week. They leave before breakfast and

go tothe conference, only returning after the evening session. I am sure they are getting more in that we are, even though we live here. The messages have been excellent. One ofthe guest speakers is
Sam Stone, and another Ziden Nutt, both of whom are regular speakers at the North American so

you have probably heard them. The other man isfrom Non-instrument background, from Nashville.

Dear Co-workers in the Lord,

Praise theLord, it hasbeenan interesting month thismonthl A lawyer acquaintance hasdropped intotheBible Shop to discuss "religion** a number oftimes. Hehasa number ofrather unorthodox opinions, buthe is stuctying and asked if I would take time toreada "case" ifheprepared it andthen make anevening appointment when wecould

discuss it. Atone time heasked ifI would baptize him and hisfamily. That sounded very good until 1discovered the ages
ofhis children forwhom he insists thathe hasevery righttomake thedecision on theirbehalf. Neither willhe be
baptizedwithouthis children. As a result of those visits,I decidedit was time that I researchedand wrote another

booklet This one deals with the Pentecostal movemait The result isnow printed and available inthe shop. I titled it, "Why WeDo NotClaim Charismatic Gifts.*' hi hiscase, thatwasnotaltogether hisproblem, butit didbring himin the first time. Heread himselfoutofthat, and now that hehasbeen challenged, hemay also read himselfoutofsmall child
baptism. Do prayfor TonyWebbstock andhis wifewithus andfor me that I will be able to reachhimfor the Lord.

Pray also forPhyllis' mid-week couples Bible Study group. While Val and Henry were onholiday inPortugal, Val walked into thecomer ofanornate hotel bedand tore a large chunk outofherleg. They cuttheir hohday ^ort, and shewasho^italized for a week butis now home and much improved. Atthesame time another, hopefully imagined, problem hasresulted in that the coiq)le where wewere going arcing nottohave theclass attheir home. It also appears that some ofthe studerits don't really want tocome here toAechurch building. Val and Henry have asked that wecome to their town house thisweek; we arepraying fliat wecansalvage most ofthegroup.

EarUer this month. Dale showed me how touse the "editor" ofmy computer scarmer, and the result isthat I now have five more booklets scarmed, edited, and inthe computer aswell asa printout inmy "originals file cabinet." I was doing very well with this, until my ^es began troubling sobadly that the only thing I could dowas tostop editing for afew weete. I actually had togo tothe doctor, but taking abreak has clearly been the biggest help. After that I also completed re-doing thesixteen page catalog ofthe items wekeep available. That was partially salvaged from a computer backup disk, though several pages h{id tobetyped again from the begiimihg. The latter naturally included nearly all the Xhosa and Zulu ^tries. These two languages have the longest and most difiicult book titles. (Lots ofZ,X and Q) Only Tswana is worsel My ^es are now troubling again and last night I fell asleep almost as soon asI satdown after eating, and only stumbled off tobed when Phyllis woke mevery late. When I woke upthis morning, I still had my watch orL I
just never wear if at night

Wehada shock this week when a phone callinformed us that Douglas Tong, firom theKimberley Road Church

had been shot and killed ashewas waiting for the door to open athis bank. Linda had been especially &ithful atthe
church when weministered there. Ofcourse Dennis Messimer brought themessage, butwedidattend themassive funeral. Even the Chinese ambassador brougjit ashort speedi expressing his qrmpathy for the family I printed the

funeral bulletins for them. Between robberies and car hijacking one feels far safer at home these days, "riie latest vfsy

past the "immobilizer and alarm systems" istoactually force one's way into a home orbusiness atgun point, take the keys, often shooting the owner outri^t Our shop, apartment and the church are heavily protected with security gates at

night, but unfortunately have to be open during the ^y.The Lord is our security until He calls us home. We still carry
on everything else in the samepolicy.

insurance, though largely only because we can no longer get comprehensive auto coverage imless you also take coverage

Maythe Lordkeepyou all in His hand.

Yours in Jesus Christ,

HI sair.

Dear Co-workers.

Deeember 95

Praises to the Lord for the computer scanner! Once we had scanned all of our oldest English books of the most teaching value that really need replaced with new editions, we ventured into the African languages of the same. Most of the Zulu and Xhosa booklets and one in Tswana (complete with all its accent marks) are now on the computer disk and hard copy

printouts are on file when the time comes to do the actual re-prints!
There are still about a dozen that we either consider to be less important or are larger jobs that we left till last. Since I have slowed down a bit.

my eyes have stopped giving me so much trouble. I am thankful for that. Toward the end of November. I printed 10,000 copies of the enclosed flyer which we had distributed for us by a company which included them along with their own Homemaker's magazines door to door. Another 6500 would
blanket Alberton and it's suburbs. I may have those done after the

holidays. School is now out. and too many people would be away on holiday during Oecenter. These have made a great difference on the turnover of the Bible Shop, though there has been little effect on the church attendance
so far. At least those who botherd to read them know where to find us. and

our phone number. One man has enquired concerning training for the
ministry.

We have been concerned about one of our young men at Central Christian, as Joseph is more deaf than I realized and he has evidently found it hard to hear me. He often takes their baby to the cry room where he could not have heard anything at all. so we have now had a sound system installed in the auditorium and the cry room. In the cry room, he can turn it as loud as he wishes. I have control over the two speaker boxes in the main auditcfrium from the pulpit. The keyboard is also channeled through this
system.

The gutters, facias, and zinc roof of the the church building have been

a concern top. so we have asked a quotation for their repair and painting. One of Phyl-iis' Bibl6 CTass student s husband has this sort of business and will be making a^qubte early in the new year.
t'

Our granddaughter Susan,Cloete returned for Israel and was here for a month before returning;.a couple of weeks ago. to Tel Aviv where she is

training to be a cook in a fancy restaurant. Her brother. Thomas returned unexpectedly to South Africa and took us all by surprise. He and his
cousin Clinton have done considerable travelling while they were there. They spent much of their time at Eilat. but visited Egypt where Thomas clintoed one of the pyramids, visited the Sphynx. and travelled up the Nile in a small sailing craft. They also swam in the Nile from the boat, and saw so many temples at Luxor they were tired of them. They climbed Mt Sinai and visited the ruins of Petra. In Israel, they seem to have gone everywhere worth mentioning. In any case, he is back to stay now, and
