Born in Ro Piedras, Puerto Rico and raised in the U.S., Nieves began his career while participating in Orquesta Cimarron, a New York-based group. In 1977, he teamed up with singer Hctor Lavoe and his Orchestra and joined The Conjunto Clasico. Later, Nieves decided to start his solo career in 1986, setting himself apart by singing Salsa in English. He is known for his hits such as El Amor Ms Bonito, Sonmbulo, and the English-salsa hit, I Like It Like That (1997). En Nueva York: Charlie Palmieri, Willie Coln y Hctor Lavoe, Ray Barreto, Tito Puente, Richie Ray y Bobby Cruz, Eddie Palmieri, Larry Harlow y Ismael Miranda, Tpica 73, Blades, Pacheco y Pete el Conde o Ismael Quintana. En Puerto Rico: Cortijo y su Combo, Gran Combo, Tommy Olivencia, Bobby Valentn, Willie Rosario, Andy Montaez, Roberto Roena y sus Apollo Sound, Frankie Ruiz, Marvin Santiago, Lalo Rodrguez o Ismael Rivera.
