A cityscape is the urban equivalent of a landscape. Townscape is roughly synonymous with cityscape, though it implies the same difference in urban size and density (and even modernity) implicit in the difference between the words city and town. In urban design the terms refer to the configuration of built forms and interstitial space. In the visual arts a cityscape (urban landscape) is an artistic representation, such as a painting, drawing, print or photograph, of the physical aspects of a city or urban area.

Im going to say this right from the start, I found this part of the unit torturous. The logistics of portraying accurate perspective I found difficult to get my head round for starters. I found it hard to keep a sense of multiple vanishing points, especially when they existed off my page, so I couldnt use marks on my paper to work from. I experimented with using a ruler for accuracy, but drawings ended up looking too rigid and lifeless, but NOT using a ruler made even little mistakes throw out the look of the whole picture. I cant get excited about buildings and it shows in every single line I draw. I found pictures based mainly on straight lines so hard to give some energy to. It was hard to get my mark-making right, and felt restricted by accuracy over style. The thing I love so much about more organic subjects is the fluidity and roughness of line, giving you so much more room for expression. Working live I also found problematic. I was struggling to find dry days to work and even on dry days it tended to be overcast making the light very flat and providing little contrast on the streets and buildings. Even tiny little shifts in sitting position could dramatically change the angle of your subject. Youd start drawing one area, then by the time youd

worked round the whole picture find that the perspective had changed after youd wriggled around a bit. I had to keep checking my invisible vanishing points constantly, with every line, and like I said, was struggling to envision these in my head. Drawing outside in public places like this was an immediate threat to my confidence, and especially as I struggled so much to get it right, I found I was really beginning to lose my nerve, with every drawing getting harder to work up the courage to do. So, yes, not a fan of buildings. All that being said I think the series of pictures are understandably fairly weak. Im a bit embarrassed showing some of them, but there we go. I keep reminding myself that this about learning, and as it was, after all these floundering efforts, it did finally come together in my final assignment piece which Ill post pictures of soon, so it was worthwhile struggling though. The ceiling of Waterstones bookshop in Birmingham, pencil on A3, which I had to do from photos in the end, because the doorway of the shop was not the ideal place to sit and draw! I did this without rulers so the accuracy is a little off, but I created a good sense of depth, I think, through the perspective detail of the ceiling. Exercise: Angular perspective

Pastel on A3. I did this one sat on the grass round the back of St Chads church on a rare sunn y day. Getting a bit hung-up on pencil lines, I thought Id try just using pastel, limiting my colours to browns, peaches and green in the hope of freeing up my drawing a bit, and as a result, the accuracy is not great and it was all too easy to try and fudge some of the poorer areas with blended colour. Still, it was a fun morning, sat in the sun, with dozens of ladybirds making a home in my scarf and the sunshine.

I was disappointed during this unit not to have got the chance to visit some exhibitions. Id had a trip to see Hockney in London planned, and to see Lowry in Manchester, but my legs just werent up to a day in the city. I have started reading lots more arts magazines though, both in print and online, and Im enjoying filling my head with lots and lots of beautiful pictures and new artists and looking at different mark-making techniques and styles and energies of images. One such artist I found and really loved at this point in the unit was Ray Morimura, who produces stylised landscapes, line-heavy with an emphasis on strong perspective.

So for this exercise I tried to capture something of his style, using strong, inked perspective lines, as well as variations in contrasting, thinner lines to add interest to walls and roofs. I drew the main lines live, then used a photo to experiment with the textured detail. The lamp post set a strong foreground focal-point, but its statement is undermined by the other

areas of solid black colour I used, which I think were a mistake. I just didnt quite this one right, but its a style Id li ke to try again in future.

Exercises: A sketchbook of townscape drawings and limited palette studies

Its at this point my confidence was at its lowest. I tried hard to build up a range of sketchbook drawings, making notes on the conditions, what I found interesting and not so much, about the light and the shadows, possible focal points etc, occasionally using that to re-draw the piece into a more finished drawing, like below.

I was struggling, though and the drawings show it.

I tried introducing a little colour too, browns and greens mostly conte crayon here, but seemed to lose something in the accuracy if I focused too hard on colour.

Watercolour pencil let me hold onto a bit more accuracy of line, but I got discouraged with this picture before I had chance to develop the background foreground more fully.

It was just a matter of practise, I think, and building up my confidence working out under public scrutiny. I definitely need to practise more with coloured media while Im now fairly safe and confident with pastel, others are much less so and I need to be a bit bolder in experimenting. I also need to get used to do more quick sketches and not aim for perfect, finished pieces before Ive done the preliminary work and thinking and information gathering, because it does help. I finished this section with a quick stab at a statue in the local park. The sun was high that day, which although cast interesting, strong shadows, meant I was squinting up at the statue Id chosen and as such didnt have that clear a view of what I was working from. Probably not the best choice in hindsight, but its one I walk past a lot and like.

I was so relieved to have got all that done and be able to move forward. Tree drawing was next up which I suspected would be much more my cup of tea.

1. Buat lakaran struktur objek yang hendak dilukis dengan pensel. Dapatkan garisan kontour kawasan arah cahaya dan bayang iaitu daripada kawasan cerah ke kawasan yang gelap. Dengan menggunakan pen dakwat basah mulakan dengan titik bahagian yang mempunyai ton cerah.

2. Tambahkan titik pada kawasan yang mempunyai ton lebih gelap atau boleh menggunakan pen yang lebih tebal saiznya.

3. Siapkan dengan menambah titik-titik pada bahagian yang mempunyai ton gelap dan pastikan titik yang dibuat tidak menjadi garisan. Setelah lukisan selesai, padamkan kesan lorekan pensel.
