Nadodigal goes
to Bollywood
Director Samuthirakani’s film,
Nadodigal, which is making
waves in the city has more
good news in store. The film
is ready to be remade in
Hindi and Telugu. The director confirmed about
his plans, though the actors are yet to be finalised.
“I am excited that Nadodigal is taking me to Hindi
and Telugu. It was not pre-planned, the story was
rejected twice and I have been working on the
idea since I entered the industry,” said the
director.
Vivek Oberoi is considered for the role played by
Sasi Kumar in Tamil. While Bellamkonda Suresh is
producing the movie in Telugu, the production
house for the Hindi remake is yet to be confirmed.
Samuthirakani is keen on retaining the lady leads
of the original – Abhinaya and Ananya. Sundar C.
will be scoring the music again.

Badri to lead
Three players from TN make it to the squad

amil Nadu middle-order batsman S Badrinath was on Monday named skipper of the Indian team for
the Emerging Players Tournament in Australia with Virat Kohli as his deputy.
Two other faces from the state – Murali Vijay and R Ashwin – also made it to the squad, which
include the Delhi duo of Kohli and Pradeep Sangwan. Apart from India, domestic teams from New
Zealand, South Africa and hosts Australia will compete in the Twenty20-cum-ODI tournament starting
July 20. India will take on AIS in a Twenty20 match on the opening day at Redlands CC in Queensland.

throughout the night. Team photos were
taken and the best dressed teams were

T
he Budget was a disappoint-
ment considering the huge
expectations people had
from it, but the positive
point is that it has not created
large disturbances. Here’s Pranab
Mukherjee’s budget you should
understand more:
Income Tax
The income tax slabs have
been raised by Rs. 10,000 for tax
payers and Rs. 15,000 for senior
citizens. The taxable income will
hence go down by Rs. 10,000.
Based on this the new exemption
limits will be: Rs. 1.6 lakh per an-
num for men; Rs 1.9 lakh per an-
num for women and Rs. 2.4 lakh
per annum for senior citizens.
Away with surcharge
The surcharge on personal In-
come Tax has been abolished.
Earlier, there used to be a sur-
charge of 10 per cent of your tax
amount as payment to the go-
vernment in case your taxable in-
come was above Rs. 10 lakh.
Meaning, if your tax payable was
Rs. one lakh, you had to pay addi-

(FBT) has been scrapped. This

same prices for another year on
account of exemption of CVD.

Even a London restaurant has a chicken
recipe named after it. The tale of
Chennai’s Buhari Hotel is one of
perseverance and smart business

E
xperimenting with 200 recipes
of biryani before starting a res-
taurant is not an easy task, es-
pecially in 1950. But the late
A.M. Buhari was a perfectionist, keen
on providing the best to namma
Chennai. Today, though he is no
more, the Buhari family led by the
third generation carries forward his
legacy.
Hailing from a lower middle-class
family in Tirunelveli district, young
Buhari had to go to Colombo to assist
his uncle in a business in the pre-
Independence era. Buhari then came
to know that Hotel Mardhana Buha-
ri, surprisingly by his own name, was
on sale in the island nation. Though
Buhari was not interested in the ho-
tel business, he was pushed by his
well-wishers to buy it. There started
the birth of the Buhari restaurant in
Colombo.
British influence
In the 1940s, Colombo was a major
European colony. So, Buhari’s early
customers were westerners, who
turned out to be strict disciplinar-
ians. This helped the school dropout
learn the nuances of the hospitality
industry. The biryani served in the
hotel was a hit. The elite Sinhalese
called it “Buhari rice” instead of bi-
ryani.
Post-Independence, the hotel was
taken over by the Sri Lankan govern-
ment and Buhari was forced to leave
the country because of political ten-
sion between India and Ceylon.
There started the businessman’s
second innings in Madras, in 1951.
Buhari launched Buhari Hotel on
Mount Road, a major centre of trade.
“With the help of chef Shamydeen
my grandfather tried more than 200
recipes of biryani,” says Nawaz H.
Buhari, one of Buhari’s grandsons
who now runs the Mount Road joint.
Chicken 65, a tale
There are many anecdotes asso-
ciated with this restaurant. They are
known to be the pioneers of ‘Chicken
65’. “Apparently, it was the 65th item
on the menu and the fry was made
from a 65-day-old chicken,” says the
director. “But in reality we started
serving chicken fry from 1965. Until
then it was only available with gravy.
Since then we introduced many ver-
sions – Chicken 78, 82 and 90. But
Chicken 65 is famous and has found
a place in all non-vegetarian restau-
rants. Interestingly, my cousin found
the item on the menu of a famous
London restaurant and it was called
Madras Buhari Chicken 65,” Nawaaz
says.
Going places
By 1965, Buhari Hotel branched
out to four places – Flower Bazaar,
Central, Egmore and Marina – of
which two are closed now. “Each ar-
ea was dominated by a different
community, so our hot-selling items
were prepared in accordance with
the local flavour,” says Nawaaz.
The famous Buhari halwa was a
recipe from Ceylon and it was made
from wheat. Also, Buhari was the first
person to prepare parotta with wheat
instead of maida.
The Buharis also own Hotel Impe-
rial and Blue Lagoon Resort in
Neelankarai.
A.M. Buhari, who was conferred
the title Sherif by Kalaignar Karuna-
nidhi, was also offered the Padma
Bushan, which he declined. He died
at the age of 86. The third generation

also claim that their grandfather was
the first person to provide chilled wa-
ter free of cost to his customers. “He
introduced uniforms for his staff and
table settings in his restaurant, which
was only practised in star hotels
then.”
“At the Marina restaurant we had a
jukebox, which attracted college stu-
dents,” Nawaaz recalls.
The hotel staff are mostly relatives
of the family who are trained by the
elders. “We have certain secret ingre-
dients, which we don’t want to leak,”
he explains.
Well-known personalities who
have visited the restaurant include
actors Sridevi and Jayachitra and for-
mer CM Jayalalithaa’s mother and
actress Sandhya. “The cassata ice-
cream was a favourite with late Chief
Minister M.G. Ramachandran,” Na-
waaz adds.
Buhari’s loyalists can now see a
renovated fine-dining restaurant on
Mount Road. “We also have plans to
open restaurants in Malaysia and
Australia in the near future.” ■

with the hands-free speaker option in its newest
BlackBerry mobile device.
The Visor Mount 605 attaches to the sunshade
with a clip, allowing drivers to use their smartphone
while driving. Data can be transmitted wirelessly with
Bluetooth. The new phone costs 79.99 euros (112.50
dollars) at the official BlackBerry shop.
New cube-shaped speakers perfect for on the go
Verbatim’s new PC loudspeaker system come in a
cube shape small enough to make them practical for
people underway with a laptop. The Bluetooth Audio
Cube allows wireless data transmission and measures a
mere seven-centimetres wide. The loudspeakers can
handle up to 4 watts of power and operate in a fre-
quency zone between 20 hertz and 20 kilohertz. They
cost 49.99 euros (70 dollars).
AVM presents new wireless USB sticks
AVM has presented a new line of WLAN sticks.
Dubbed the Fritz!WLAN UBS Stick N 2.4, they support a
standard 2.4 gigahertz WLAN frequency and allow data
transmission at rates of up to 150 megabits per second.
Installation is not necessary, since the stick comes pre-
packaged with all necessary files. The recommended
price is about 49 euros (70 dollars).
Navigation software lets cyclists map precise
routes
The newest version of Tour Explorer 25, a navigation
system from MagicMaps, includes data on Germany’s
entire bicycle path network, courtesy of the ADFC Na-
tionwide German Bicycle Club. Version 4.0, an eight-
DVD set, is on the markets and retails for 49.90 (70
dollars). The new version allows specific route planning
for all of Germany and can provide door-to-door
directions.
JVC presents new Blu-ray player
JVC’s new Blu-ray player, the XV-BP1, includes USB,
HDMI and LAN connections and can also access data
via the Internet. JVC says the features make the player
ready to fit into the multimedia home entertainment
system of the future. The device supports the BD-ROM,

e may be mourning the
death of his idol but
business is booming
for Jason Jackson, Aus-
tralia’s answer to the late King
of Pop.
The tribute artist, who has
turned his Sydney home into
a mini-Neverland Ranch, said
he had been inundated with
booking requests since the
star’s death.
“Before Michael Jackson’s
passing I was, I would say, 50
to 70 percent booked,” he
said. “Now I’m 200 percent.”
Jackson, 35, changed his
name by deed poll from Jason

tor’s obsession began during
a trip to hospital for treat-

considered a “second father,”
Jackson studied the pop leg-
end’s footwork and taught
himself to sing and dance.
“I saw him doing Billie Jean
and I thought ’I want to be

over my cancer because of
Michael,” said Jackson.
“I had so much passion and
I’ve built this (show) from
nothing to something. Mi-
chael Jackson gave me the
strength to do that.”
Jackson’s “Michael Jackson
Dance Spectacular” has
played thousands of venues,
including many of Sydney’s
major arenas, and he believes
the show will now be more
popular than ever. “There’s
something fantastic, it’s spec-
tacle,” he explained.
“When people go to one of
his concerts they expect the
best showmanship that Mi-
chael can give, it’s amazing to
watch, he’s got so much talent
and so much charisma.”
His promotional material
boasts an “uncanny likeness
to the King of Pop himself,”
but it’s the spirit of his hero
that Jackson values most.
“I am not Michael Jackson
but people look at me and go
’oh this guy’s got talent, this
guy’s got the same thing as
Michael,’ and it makes me
happy to show what Michael
can do,” he said.
“I am very blessed and very
honoured to pay tribute to
him, the biggest artist in the

inger Kailash Kher, who shot to fame with the
famous ‘Allah Ke Bande’, says his new album Kai-
lasa Chaandan Mein is organic as only traditional
instruments were used in creating its music.
“We have not used any electronic instruments in
Kailasa Chaandan Mein. I would rather call it an orga-
nic album as only instruments like morchang, ektara,
chimta, kartaal, mandolin, saaz, ud, bagal-bachcha
and ravan hatha were used in all the songs,” says the
singer.
“This is also the first time that my album has been
released worldwide. I have dedicated this album to my
father, who is no more,” he adds.
The album, which has music by Kailash, Naresh and
Paresh, is a compilation of eight songs.
Kher’s song ‘Allah ke Bande’ from the movie Waisa
Bhi Hota Hai Part II, made him a household name in
2002.
His last two albums Kailasa and Kailasa Jhoomo Re
were also record sellers. He has also composed music
in films like Daasvidaniya and Akshay Kumar-starrer
Chandni Chowk to China.
Talking about the video of the latest album, he says,
“‘O Jee’ is the video song shot in the holy city Pushkar
in Rajasthan. The director Rajat Nagpaal has done a
very good job.”
On the usage of unique words in his songs, he says, “I
have grown singing bhajans of sant Kabir, sant Raidas
and Guru Nanak. So I try using those words in my
songs too. And these words are not something new but
very much Hindustani.” ■
