Selection Trials Team IITB ASME-Student Design Competition

Task Design a remote controlled device capable of negotiating obstacles, picking and dropping a cylindrical dowel, and return back to the starting position. Device Requirements The device must be powered by an on-board energy source. The voltage difference between any two points must not exceed 24 Volts. The device must be controlled by a wired remote, wireless communication is not allowed. Length of the cable for the remote must be greater than 1.5 m. There are no size restrictions on the device. Course Description The course will consist of a flat level section of the floor, marked off with masking tape. The course will be of size 5m x 5m. There will be obstacles within the course. Size, shape and material of the obstacles are not specified and will be placed in a manner to create pathway to the tasks. Minimum distance between 2 obstacles will be 1 m. There are five tasks to be accomplished 1. Navigate around the obstacles. 2. Pick up a cylindrical nylon dowel placed on the ground. The axis of the dowel will be perpendicular to the ground. 3. Drop off the dowel in a square well of dimensions 100x100x100 mm, (refer drawings for location). 4. Pick-up another dowel of same dimensions and orientation, kept at a different location. 5. Return the dowel back to the starting point. Note: All the dimensions in the drawings are in mm, unless specified

Contest Operation At the start signal the vehicle must proceed down the course, pick the dowel, negotiate obstacles, drop off the dowel in the well, pick another dowel and return back to the start point. A maximum of 5 Minutes are allowed to complete all the tasks and return back to the start point. Time will only stop when all the tasks are completed and the device returns back to the start point. You will not be allowed to touch the device nor the dowels during the run, however 2 time-outs of 30 seconds each will be provided to the teams to rectify any technical glitch. The machine will be repositioned to the same location and orientation where it left the arena before the time-out. Only one operator will be allowed to operate the device. Scoring and Penalties Picking up each dowel is worth 3000 points; successfully dropping the dowel is worth 5000 points, successfully returning to the starting point with the dowel is worth 2000 points. During the run any part of the device must not leave the arena; a penalty of 200 points will be imposed on the team for doing the same. The winning device will have the highest score S, where S is S = R 10*s 200*P R= Task score P= No of times device moves out of the arena s = Time taken to complete the run, maximum 300 seconds Any device not meeting the device requirements will be immediately disqualified. Team description Maximum of four members are allowed per team. There are no restrictions on the department and hostel of the team members. The students will be judged upon their design (and not necessarily upon the scores).
