RABBINIC REFLECTIONS
CONGREGATION SHAAREY ZEDEK WWW.SHAAREYZEDEK.ORG

hen Adam stayed out very late for a few nights in a row, Eve became upset. Youre running around with other women, she charged. He responded, Eve, youre being unreasonable. Youre the only woman on earth! e quarrel continued until Adam fell asleep, only to be awakened by someone poking him in the chest. It was Eve. What do you think youre doing? Adam demanded. She responded: Nothing much. Just counting your ribs! Adam and Eve it was a simpler age, a less stressful era, a more peaceful time. Before long though our cherished story takes a drastic turn with the introduction of humanity and the tranquility of the world becomes shattered. e Baal Shem Tov explains that after Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit, they were no longer satised with what had been prepared for them and many troubles overcame them. In one rebellious act, they brought mortality, struggle and evil into the world. Now I am sure the Biblical rst couple could not imagine what their decision might mean for the future they never predicted that a singular act of disobedience would shatter their innocence and open the world to hardship, hurt, disappointment, destruction, evil, terrorism and darkness. But there is hope An English professor of mine once wrote the following,

Woman without her man is nothing and directed his students to punctuate the sentence appropriately. Most of the men wrote: Woman, without her man, is nothing! e majority of the women wrote: Woman! Without her, man is nothing! In just those six words the professor taught us a profound lesson: we all truly need each other. Only together do we have a chance to recapture that elemental unity, and original oneness that existed before the rst couple ate the forbidden fruit. We cannot put a stop to terrorism nor can we remove all evil from the world, but we can express genuine care and concern for one another, and we can do a better job of acknowledging the innate humanity and Godliness in every single person we encounter. While we can be at odds if we choose, we can also both individually and collectively work together step by step and day by day to make this world a kinder, gentler and holier place. We need each other and the more quickly we learn that lesson, the sooner we will have the chance to glimpse a sight of the Garden, leaving this broken world just a little bit better than we found it. As God calls out to each of us to bring a little more light into the world at the darkest time of year, Susan, Atara, Micah and Elan join me in wishing you a good month.

Remembering our New Year Commitments

Rabbi Aaron L. Starr

or regular gym goers, January is typically the least favorite month. Come New Years Day, a signicant percentage of the population commits itself to getting healthy, and that often includes signing up for health club memberships. Sure enough, January rolls around, and the clubs are packed with new people looking to get their workouts in. ose who go to the gym throughout year, however, know to give them a few weeks: come February, the crowd thins out once again as most New Years resolutions go by the wayside. With the High Holy Days 5774 now behind us, we are entering what could become Health Club February. Just as those who commit to improving their health come January do so with the best of intentions, so too did we stand before God on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur and commit ourselves to doing better in the coming year. We promised to speak less gossip and slander. We promised to take better care of our family and friends. We promised to come to shul more often, on Shabbat and for daily minyan. We desired to make Jewish learning a xed

part of our calendar. We oered to volunteer more for the synagogue, and to engage in more frequent and more signicant acts of Tikkun Olam. While late in the night on December 31 we might re-commit ourselves to healthier physical lives, in the Hebrew months of Elul and Tishrei, we promised to live healthier spiritual lives. is year, will you be among those who stop going to the gym come February 1, or will you be among those who have truly done teshuvah and made a change for the better? My hope, of course, is for the latterfor all of us. What does the LORD require of you? the prophet Micah (6:8) asks. To do justice. To love mercy. And to walk humbly with your God. In this New Year 5774, may our commitments to God, to the Jewish People, to our family and to ourselves be armed and upheld throughout the year, that, come New Years 5775, we can stand before the Heavenly Judge proud of our new, healthier spiritual lives. If there is anything I can do to assist you in your journey, please do not hesitate to contact me. May we all continue to go from strength to strength, from blessing to blessing, and from simcha to simcha.
