Grooms English 1302 April 24, 2010 Phoenix Jackson and the Hunter A Worn Path by Eudora Welty describes the facts of Phoenix Jackson being strong and brave grandmother. This is clarified more accurately by adding the context of Phoenix Jackson meeting with the hunter. This situation occurs when the black dog coming out of the weed touches her and fells into the ditch when she was meditating (1353). When she was on the ditch a white man came along with his dog and gets her out of the ditch who is a hunter (1353). The hunter lifted her up, gave her a swing in the air, set her down, and asked her if anything is broken (1353). This situation describes the importance of the hunter in getting her out of the ditch, without him she would have stayed helpless in the ditch. In the mean time the hunter appears as cruel to old women because he pulled her out of the ditch with the force and swing up her in the air (1353). The old people are usually week and require lot of care in lifting them. This act of the hunter is disrespectful to the Jackson; young people should have respect towards seniors citizen. Despite of that cruel action nothing happened to Jackson which illuminate that her bones are still strong. After little conversation Jackson heads towards the town leaving the hunter with the dogs. On the way the hunter came back and pointed his gun at Jackson by laughing at her but she stood

straight and faced him (1354). She was not scared of the gun, at this moment we can see another unkind action of the hunter and fearless Jackson. Further, the hunter shows some kindness toward the Jackson and tells her to take rest and stay at home (1354). He also tries to give her a nickel if he has any. Jackson determination towards her destination is another theme for the story which can be depicted from this part. Conclusively, this story reflects the hurdles and difficulties faced by old Jackson during her trip to the town and meeting with the hunter was one of them. Though he raised her from the ditch and confronted the black dog the negative nature of young hunter can be seen through his conversation and his actions. Jackson proved herself as a brave and strong old lady because she passed through that hunter and kept the hope of getting on her way towards town when she was staying helpless in the ditch.
