Fiji was honoured for its progress in information and computer technology by the United Nations International Organization for South-South Cooperation. Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama accepted the award which recognises advances in sustainable development and progress toward reaching millennium development goals, from Winston Baldwin, Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda. The award cited Fiji for developing a broadband regime that is reaching all levels of Fijian society and all areas of the country.. Bainimarama said he was proud because the UN had "recognised the great work so many Fijians are doing to advance our country in the field of information communications technology."

systemic corruption and inefficiency in telecommunications, just as we have in the country as a whole, he said. The Prime Minister asserted that Fiji expects broadband access to be a social equalizer, helping to eliminate the disparities between rural and urban residents, helping to lift the poor, and opening connections among people. For a small island developing state like our own, strung out over vast distances of ocean, high speed cable access was neither affordable nor practical, so mobile broadband was the only viable and immediate option, he said. He said setting up telecentres helped reach remote communities. About 40,000 people now access the 15
telecentres. I get a huge thrill from opening these facilities because of the delighted looks on the faces of ordinary Fijians as a door is suddenly opened to them, he said. It is the door to a world of opportunity. Our goal is 100 per cent coverage through a universal service access initiative that will offer subsidies to telecommunications companies to put infrastructure in very remote areas. The hope is to reach every Fijian, because we all know the risk of not doing so. If we do not spread the advantages of the digital age to all, then technology will actually create even greater disparities.

Online voter registration will not be available for Fijians living overseas. Attorney-General and Minister Responsible for Elections, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said: There are too many opportunities at this stage for fraudulent behavior. New Zealand does allow it, but they have less of a history of fraud than Fiji. This means that Fijians living overseas will have to meet with the visiting voter registration teams in order to be registered. 2014 elections cost Preliminary costing for next years election is around $40 million, Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said. Papua New Guinea has already committed in writing that they will be giving 25million kina. This is equivalent to FJD$20 million which will be released in the first quarter of next year. Mr Sayed-Khaiyum did not specify how the remaining FJD $20 million will be met. However, he said some donors had offered to help in kind. One country for example has said that they will buy all the ballot boxesbut we have certain requirements that the ballot boxes must be UN compliant and they must meet the best international standards, he said. India has also offered to supply indelible ink. Six technical experts, (two from
Australia, two from New Zealand and two from the European Union) are expected to be in the country by late October. Now there needs to be a more detailed approach done, in terms of logistics and actual planning, human resource and specific areas and weve agreed in principle to get these technical experts. Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said the details would be finalised next Monday. Drafting experts are also expected in the country soon. The public and political parties need to know what the rules and regulations are by the end of the year. He referred to areas including counting, reconciliation and advertising. Development partners Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said: Obviously our development partners have a lot of confidence in what is being done. Confidence in the system that is being set up under the constitution. That is why they are working with us and the fact that we are getting experts coming out and working with us is again a sign of the confidence in the processes, and we want to ensure that all the processes are laid out, logistics are laid out, rules and regulations are laid out in a very apolitical and objective manner to ensure that the political outcome is fair, credible and transparent. And that is very critical. he said.
New regulations enacted by government will give thousands of FNPF members who live on communally-owned land greater access to housing. The Fiji National Provident Fund (Housing Finance Assistance) Regulations allow an FNPF member who lives on any communally-owned land to apply for assistance to construct, renovate, or extend his or her house. Previously, this housing assistance was available only to those FNPF members who lived within the boundaries of an iTaukei village as defined by the iTaukei Affairs Act, excluding Fijians wanting to build a home on communally-owned land outside of the village-proper, as well as Fijians living in non-iTaukei villages. Now, under these new regulations, housing assistance will be available to all Fijians who live on any piece
of land that is communally owned, or owned in partnership with others. Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama following the announcement on the new changes said providing access to housing is one of his governments top priorities and the new policy will allow thousands of Fijians the opportunity to build a new home or renovate an existing one. He said not only does this policy support governments goal of access to housing for all Fijians, it is also in line with the right to housing provided for by the 2013 Constitution. The housing assistance scheme allows an FNPF member to withdraw funds from his or her FNPF account to renovate, extend or construct a house that is occupied or will be occupied by that member.
ONE of the country's knowledgeable economists has called on the government to review the salaries of principals and bring it to par with responsibilities they carry out in schools. Speaking at the opening of the Fiji Principals Conference in Labasa, USP economist Professor Biman Prasad said the retention of principals and teachers was linked to their economic status in that they needed to be fairly rewarded for the important work they did. "Let me give you an example. There are 175 secondary schools in the country and if there was an increase in the salaries of principals from next year by $10,000 across the board, the lowest level 4C principal's starting salary would be $38,304," Mr Prasad said. "The increase would also raise the starting salary of the highest level 1D principal to $49,529. The total salary budget that the Education Ministry will need to raise the principals' salary by $10,000 across the board will amount to $1.75million. This, in my view, is a small price to pay for the benefits that
will be returned. It's small but wise investment that will bring us good returns. "Principals and teachers remain the single most important factor in determining the quality of teaching. The ability to attract higly-motivated, skilled and committed individuals and retaining them in the profession is absolutely vital for improving the quality of education in the increasing challenging global environment." Mr Prasad urged the government and the Education Ministry to seriously look into the matter. Education Ministry permanent secretary Dr Brij Lal referred all queries to the Public Service Commission (PSC). In response, PSC permanent secretary Parmesh Chand said: "We cannot respond to a proposal for salary rise from an outside party. "A contract of employment is between an employer and an employee and matters pertaining to salary and terms and conditions of employment are covered in that contract."
Fiji and Vanuatu have sealed a development cooperation deal in New York. Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama and his Vanuatu counter part Moana Carcasses Kalosil signed a Memorandum of Understanding which essentially articulates the desire of both countries to strengthen their relations through cooperation on a number of key areas. Bainimarama said Fiji and Vanuatu share development aspirations and challenges, and agreements such as the one they signed today will allow collective and innovative solutions to
be developed, drawing on best practices from each of the two countries. The MOU encompasses a broad range of issues including: bilateral trade and investment; education, youth and human resource development; labour mobility; immigration; commerce, retail and taxation; Fisheries Cooperation; air and sea transportation; health and pharmaceutical; climate change, environment, security and energy; and livestock development. It is envisaged to also further strengthen collaboration by the two countries within the framework of the MSG Agreement.

The deputy Permanent Secretary for iTaukei Affairs, Colonel Apakuki Kurusiga, officiated at a groundbreaking ceremony of a new housing project at Savutalele in Tacirua yesterday. Colonel Kurusiga said the new project was the first of its kind for iTaukei landowners. What we are witnessing today is perhaps a new chapter of modern Fijian history in the making, in particular that of iTaukei landowners, in that this is the first ever land subdivision that is entirely being engineered, envisioned and espoused by a iTaukei landowner, Colonel Kurusiga said. Ratu Samuela Qaliduadua, the turaga ni mataqali Uluinakavoro and members of the mataqali of Kalabu are undertaking this ambitious project. According to project contractor Tovolea Pipe Layer & Civil Works Construction director and project engineer Inia Tubui the lots will be on a 21-acre native lease land belonging to the mataqali Uluinakoroa of the vanua o Kalabu, Naitasiri. He said this was the first time such a subdivision was privately engineered and pursued by landowners. We are very thankful to the landowners for being kind-hearted to allow this project to take place, Mr Tubui said. With more than a thousand acres of
prime residential land that buffers the municipalities of Nasinu and Nausori, the mataqali Uluikavoro agreed to have a mere 21 acres of land mass at Savutalele for their housing subdivision project. Mr Tubui said more cheap homes would now be available after the completion of this new housing project at Savutalele. The new subdivision will have 68 lots comprising of residential, commercial and industrial blocks. He said the reason for carrying out the project was to provide affordable land and housing to average income owners. We are selling the sub-division for $75 per square meter for residential lots and I know that other authorities who deal with sub-division have a much higher unit cost. Meanwhile, landowner turaga ni mataqali Uluinakoroa Samuela Qaliduadua said the journey to get to where they were today was a long and hard one. Together with our consultants we have constantly been through rough times to try and get here for the past ten years, Mr Uluinakoroa said. Colonel Kurusiga said he could not recall if there had ever been a similar land subdivision in any part of the country. When the subdivision is fully developed in three months time it

would earn the company over $4 million in land sales on the lower end of the market, The project is in line with Governments policy of having affordable homes for
the people. This is the first phase of the project and according to Mr Tubui more affordable homes will be available in the second phase also at Savutalele.
A 49-year-old woman died instantly when her husband in an attempt to avoid potholes drove into the path of an oncoming 10-wheeler truck. The incident happened just before 7am near Fulton College in Korovou. It is alleged the deceaseds husband while trying to avoid the potholes created by
the ongoing road works veered off to the opposite lane and hit a 10-wheeler-truck which was on its way to Suva, Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said. The body of the deceased is at the Korovou Hospital. Her husband was also taken in for observation. Investigations continue.
Police are investigating the alleged suicide of a 14-year-old boy in Vunidawa. Authorities did not disclose particulars of the incident only saying that the deceased was found by his 22-yearold sister following the last Sunday morning church service. The incident was reported to the Vunidawa Police station. Police are once again calling on parents
to set aside quality time to spend with their children and in the process could help avoid a similar loss of life. This is another unfortunate case concerning the Fiji Police as our children are becoming victims," Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said. The fact that our children are having suicidal thoughts is something we should all be finding a solution for.

The Ministry of Education has issued a stern warning to teachers that corporal punishment will not be tolerated by the Ministry. This is in response to three reported cases now under investigation by the Fiji Police Force. The Ministry of Education will not condone such behaviour by teachers. The issue is now with the police and the findings we gather from them will determine the action that we will take against the abuse perpetrators, said the Ministrys permanent secretary Dr Brij Lal. The Ministry of Education has a child protection policy which ensures that the well-being, safety, respect and dignity of children are respected. This policy should be read by teachers and clearly articulates the action taken against child abuse perpetrators. Schools should also have their own child protection policy aligned to the ministry policy.
If teachers continue to inflict corporal punishment it means that they are not reading this policy and do not bother to know and understand the latest policies in place, commented Dr Lal. The Ministry of Education has a commitment to protect the rights of children in the school and ensure that a conducive environment for learning is created. Such actions will create fear in the lives of children and affect their concentration in school. I will not condone such acts and teachers accused will be suspended pending further investigation. The police findings will determine the cause of action instituted against the teacher involved. Teachers around the country are advised to refrain from inflicting corporal punishment on children. It is an illegal act and anyone involved should be prepared to face the consequences of their action, he said

prisoners has been changing, according to the conference discussion guide. Generally, it appears that prisons across most of the region now house a more complex mix of prisoners and that a larger number of them may be termed high risk for one reason or another. 8 Although the main focus is likely to be on prison-based management, delegates will also learn about measures 8 and initiatives to better manage high risk offenders on release back to the community. Participants will also discuss challenges and initiatives in corrections; organisational culture: promoting shared positive value and integrity and alternatives to imprisonment. Other topics include measuring and reducing recidivism rates: assessing what works, setting targets and implementing evidence-based programmes. Fiji will host the APCCA in 2017.
Meeting the challenges posed by highrisk offenders is an issue being discussed at the 33rd Asia Pacific Conference of Correctional Administrators (APCCA) in India. The Fiji Corrections Service, as a member of the APCCA, is represented by a 3-member delegation led by the Commissioner of Corrections Lt. Col Ifereimi Vasu. Recent APCCA conferences have highlighted the fact that the profile of
A TOTAL of 48 businesses were approved by the Reserve Bank of Fiji Import Substitution and Export Finance Facility (ISEFF) to date. RBF domestic markets acting manager Lavenia Cocker said the approval was worth $53.4million. Speaking at the Investment Fiji Export Awareness seminar in Suva, Ms Cocker invited businesses to take advantage of the assistance by the central bank because available funding for new application stands at $26.6m. She said seven businesses applied for import substitution and were granted with $4.6m, $3.8m to 10 businesses for renewable energy and $44.7m to 31 exporters. Ms Cocker said the ISEFF objective was to improve Fiji's balance of payments position, increased exports earnings and reduce import payments. For eligibility, she said all primary and secondary exporters, new and existing local agricultural businesses involved
in import substitution and renewable energy business were eligible to access the fund with 1 per cent interest rate to lending institutions. She said a maximum loan of $1m per individual business had a maximum of 5 per cent interest rate. "Tapping into the ISEFF can yield tangible benefits, promote import substitution by encouraging local production and can be the difference between survival and closure for some exporters." She said the facility was a pro-growth initiative. At the seminar Ministry of Trade permanent secretary Shaheen Ali said the government would continue to assist exporters to achieve longterm growth. Mr Ali said such seminars provided opportunities to interact with each other and to seek the services of the various agencies that were present at the seminar.

Fijian Prime Minister Josaia Bainimarama met with Queen Maxima of the Netherlands in Her Majestys capacity as the Special Advocate of the UN Secretary-General for Inclusive Financing for Development. The Prime Minister welcomed Her Majesty to the G77 office at the UN and expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to meet with her, and discuss the important work she had undertaken for the United Nations on inclusive financing for development. In explaining her work on raising the profile of inclusive financing in the context of the elaboration of the post2015 development agenda, Queen Maxima congratulated Fiji for the excellent work it has undertaken on promoting inclusive financing. She pointed out her frequent use of Fiji as an example when advocating for financial inclusion; citing examples of Fijis use of mobile banking services and the expansion of the rural banking network.
In discussing the need for inclusive financing to feature strongly in the post-2015 development agenda, Queen Maxima stressed that in the pursuit of eliminating poverty and hunger, creating livelihoods must be the central goal and inclusive financing is critical to achieving this goal. Her Majesty will encourage the G77 to consider how inclusive financing can be incorporated into the Sustainable Development Goals and the post-2015 development agenda, either through a specific goal on inclusive financing or through the use of indicators mapping access to financing. The Prime Minister assured Queen Maxima that the G77 would consider these issues, and encouraged her office to remain connected with the Expert Working Group on Financing for Development which was established this year. It was also agreed that Queen Maxima be invited to address the G77 in New York on these issues at an appropriate time.

A 35-YEAR-OLD taxidriver will be sentenced in the Suva Magistrates Court for rape. The man appeared before magistrate Shagit Somaratne. In his mitigating submission, through his lawyer, the man said he was married and attended the Seventh-day Adventist Church. He said he normally engaged himself with the community, such as playing rugby and volleyball, and that he had improved personally by enrolling in professional counselling in one of the institutes in Fiji. The court heard that the man earned
$300 a week, is the sole breadwinner in the family, and that he looks after his elderly aunt and 32-year-old sister. He said he would not reoffend. His submission stated that the court should consider his sentencing terms of lower than seven years imprisonment. However, the court heard that the maximum term for rape was life imprisonment and a tariff of one count was 10 to 25 years imprisonment. His submission further stated that the court should also consider him serving a portion of his sentence doing community work.

TWO political parties have raised concerns on the pay rise given to permanent secretaries and heads of the disciplined forces. Public Service Commission permanent secretary Parmesh Chand confirmed the pay rise and explained the reasons for it. However, in a statement, Fiji Labour Party leader Mahendra Chaudhry said: "No amount of explanation by PSC can vindicate the outrageously massive pay increase awarded to heads of disciplinary services and permanent secretaries." "The explanation offered does not add up when viewed against the manner in which appointments to senior positions in the public service are being made since April 2009." Mr Chaudhry said as far as the FLP was aware, the merit principle was not applied anymore. "How can these massive increases be justified in the face of widespread poverty
among our people and considering that 70 per cent of Fiji's workers are paid below poverty line wages? "The salary hike is a big blow to the deputy secretaries and heads of departments, as well as subordinate officers who collectively keep the ministries and departments running. "This is exclusive pay rise for 27 special people in the public service. "It has completely distorted the salary relatively between the different grades of officers and widened enormously the gap between the top, middle and bottom ranks." National Federation Party general secretary Vishwa Nadan asked who would check that the permanent secretaries have vacated their homes. "Who will do the policing as far the permanent secretaries losing certain benefits is concerned? What is going to be the position of the houses occupied by them? Will they have to vacate them or pay rent?"

NEWCREST Mining Limited says it remains committed to the Namosi Joint Venture despite posting a massive $A5.778billion ($F9.9b) net loss in the 2013 financial year. The loss was driven largely by a drop in the global market price of gold and the expected asset impairments and write downs that were projected by the company. The record loss comes after the company posted a net profit of $A1.117b ($F1.944b) for the 2012 financial year. Newcrest spending in Fiji was also down 29 per cent, falling from $A7million ($F12.18m) in the 2012 financial year to $A5m ($F8.70m) this year. NJV country manager Greg Morris said there would be no change in the current operations in Namosi. "The Namosi Joint Venture (NJV) has been undertaking exploration drilling in the Waivaka area and is now preparing for further environmental and social study work as part of the environmental impact assessment (EIA) process for the Waisoi project," Mr Morris said. He also said the NJV was undertaking
exploration drilling in the Waivaka area. Speaking on the decreased spending at the NJV exploration site, Mr Morris said this was representative of the normal mining cycle. "Increases and decreases in drilling and study activities are part of the normal exploration cycle. Namosi is an exploration project. "Increases and decreases in drilling activity have happened before and will happen again as exploration levels vary during the project cycle." Newcrest, which owns a 69.94 per cent stake in NJV, says additional study work had to be conducted at the Namosi project. "Once that is completed, it will enable further informed consultation and engagement with the community, government and other stakeholders about the Waisoi project in accordance with the EIA process under Fiji laws. "The Waisoi EIA will inform the community and other stakeholders about the proposed project, and help the Fiji Government decide if a mine at Waisoi can be built in an environmentally acceptable manner."

A FIJIAN missionary and her parents can only thank God for being delayed to a meeting in Nairobi in Kenya on Saturday. It saved their lives. Lorna-Jayne Waqanivavalagi, dad Wame and mum Ella were supposed to have been at a cafe on the ground floor of the popular Westgate Mall when it was raided by the Al Qaeda-linked terrorist group, Al Shabab. Ms Waqanivavalagi told The Fiji Times from Nairobi that divine intervention saved them from the terrorists who went on a killing spree. "The cafe we were supposed to be at was the exact place where most of the people died," Ms Waqanivavalagi said. "It was where they (Al Shabab terrorists) started shooting. That could have been me and that could've been my parents." Mr and Mrs Waqanivavalagi had travelled to Nairobi last Thursday to witness their daughter graduate from Youth With A Mission, a missionary organisation whose members travel the world spreading Christianity. "We were supposed to meet an uncle and aunt of mine at the cafe for breakfast but by God's grace, we were delayed," she said. "So many children died, so many people are hurting and searching for peace. I feel so helpless." Ms Waqanivavalagi said she was still in shock over the events of the past few days, breaking down every time she thought about their near-miss with the merciless killers. "Everyone around me is terrified and hurting. I don't know what to say, I'm so lost and shocked. I don't even have words to describe what's happening here in Kenya. "Since Saturday, I've woken up to news that the body count continues to increase. I can't stop thanking God enough for his protection."

"Consumers in the North continue to lodge their complaints with the council and most issues involve mobile products, electronic goods, hire-purchase, spare parts, hardware, mobile services and landlord tenancy." Ms Kumar said it was only proper to empower people about their rights so they could practise it. "Empowering vulnerable consumers on their rights and instilling confidence in them to question unfair market practices in marketplace is what the council intends to attain through this workshop."
"The student was medically treated and is now back in school." Ms Naisoro said the teacher would be questioned soon. "For now police officers are gathering information about the incident as investigation continues." The Education Ministry had yet to receive information on the alleged incident.

FIJI Airways flyers can expect teething problems to be resolved by the end of October. And according to managing director and CEO Stefan Pichler, their fiveyear plan to move the airline forward would also focus on improving ontime performance. "I think Fiji Airways fed a little bit into this kind of problem because the transition into A330 aircraft overstretched the resources which means in some cases the pilots were not trained or cabin crew was not ready as well as other areas of the business," he said. "We had launched a taskforce of the management team to look into how we can improve on-time performance on a continuous level for Fiji Airways. "This taskforce has identified 14 different projects that range from renovation, renegotiating supplier contracts with maintenance to having
short-term recovery and spare parts." He said the taskforce would meet every week to track each project and its progress. The disruptions, he said, were not normally caused by the same issues. "If you operate only three A330-200s and one has a problem, you can't just replace it because you have only two others, or if we have only four 737s and one is out, it has an impact on schedule," Mr Pichler said. "The set-up of Fiji Airways is such that you have these different levels of fleet so you can't substitute the aircraft. A 737 can't fly what an A330 flies or a Twin-Otter can't fly what a 737 flies that's why the flexibility of this set-up is a little limited. "But if we do our work properly, with the management processes, we can improve on-time performance and minimise disruptions in a significant way."

Travel Burden
THE road condition in the district of Saqani has been blamed for the interrupted bus services over the past three weeks. Parmod Buses Ltd and Vishnu Holdings Ltd director Parmod Chand said the road was in a bad condition and buses could not travel to the Saqani area. He said the buses would resume services if the road condition was improved. LTA regional manager North Isoa Tawakevou concurred and said the condition was not good. He said buses were in good conditions but the roads were not, which had caused problems to the buses. Good road conditions were noticeable only from Labasa to Saqani and Saqani to Savusavu. The road was in a condition that could at least be serviced by buses. Compared to other trips made by news reporter team along the same road, the condition of road seen last week was much better than on previous trips made. A team from road contractors, Fair Deal, was in Saqani area inspecting the roads. The team said they had been informed about bus services ceasing in the area. The buses, which used to make trips from Savusavu to Labasa through Saqani and from Labasa to Vanuavou in Saqani no longer made those trips. The buses from Labasa only reach Wainigadru Village in the district of Tawake while the buses from Savusavu only reach Vanuavou. Villagers have expressed concern over the situation because they paid as much as $80 to hire a carrier from Wainigadru to Lakeba Village. Sakiusa Rogocake, a church worker said he was blessed to have had a friend pick him up from Wainigadru Village last week. "My friend only charged me $60 from there to Lakeba. If it was another driver, the normal charge is $80 and it's expensive," Mr Rogocake said. He said sometimes villagers helped one another pay for the carrier travel cost to ease their burden.

Fiji Foreign Minister Holds Bilateral Meetings With Australia And New Zealand
Fijis Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Ratu Inoke Kubuabola held key bilateral meetings with his Australia and New Zealand counterparts in New York. The foreign minister is in New York participating at the United Nations General Assemblys 68th session and participating at side meetings. The Minister met with his counterparts from New Zealand, the Honourable Murray McCully, and the Australian Minister of Foreign Affairs the Honourable Julie Bishop. In both meetings, Minister Kubuabola was able to update his counterparts on Fiji's new constitution, and further steps taken along the roadmap to
elections to be held no later than September 2014. Frank and fruitful discussions were held with both Ministers McCully and Minister Bishop on bilateral relations. In acknowledging the progress Fiji has made, Minister Bishop recognised Fiji's steadfast contributions to UN peacekeeping, in particular the willingness to deploy to difficult situations around the world. She also acknowledged Fiji's standing in the UN community through its G77 Chairmanship in 2013. In both bilateral meetings, the Ministers agreed to maintain regular contact and to work towards normalising full relations with Fiji.
Fiji will soon ratify the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRDP). The Fiji National Council for Disabled Persons (FNCDP) executive Director Dr Sitiveni Yanuyanutawa said that the recent review of the Fiji National Council for Disabled Persons (FNCDP Act 1994) and the drafting of Disability Decree 2013 is a milestone achievement for Fiji. He said the strengthening of the legislative framework will enable Fiji to ratify the Convention on the Rights of Persons Living with Disabilities. The completion of review of FNCDP Act and draft Decree on Disability will be a boost in terms of providing an inclusive and enabling environment for the persons living with disability. It will give persons with disability more powers to exercise their rights to live dignified and productive lives. The Council also looks forward to ratifying of the Convention this year. Fiji signed to CRPD on 2nd June 2010 and for next year the Council also hopes to get the endorsement for Biwako Millennium Framework for Action (BMF). The BMF +5 reinforces a rights based approach to disability issues by recognising the importance of the Convention, Dr Yanuyanutawa said. He said that the Convention and the BMF will pursue a common goal of achieving an inclusive and rightsbased society for persons living with disabilities. Steps taken by the State to ratify the CRPD, will contribute towards the implementation of the Biwako Millennium Framework for Action. According to the 2009 National Baseline Survey called Making women with disability visible there are a total of 11,402 persons with disability in Fiji of which 54% are
males and 46% are females. The government provides monthly social welfare assistance to persons living with disabilities, they are also able to travel through buses for free and also get 20 percent concession on taxi fares for the first 20 kilometers travelled. According to the Convention of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the proper name to describe the disabled persons is called PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES. Through the ratification of the Convention there will more opportunities to provide a barrier free and inclusive society for all persons with disabilities in Fiji, Dr Yanuyanutawa added. The Biwako Millennium Framework for Action (BMF) was adopted in Otsu City, Shiga, Japan by 28 Governments at the High Level Intergovernmental Meeting to Conclude the Asian and Pacific Decade of Disabled Persons in October 2002. The Minister for Women Dr Jiko Luveni said that Government is already putting in mechanisms that promote the rights of disabled persons in the country. The disabled persons of Fiji will feature strongly in our Annual Corporate Plan (2014) as there are great strides done already to see the new disability decree this year. Likewise Fiji will ratify the Convention of the Rights of the Disables Persons soon and that is a new marking, Minister Luveni said. The stimulus for the support driven approach for the disabled persons is really welcoming to all. The Ministry in partnership with all the relevant stakeholders should prescribe action areas for delivery and oversight next year.

A BOLLYWOOD movie shot in Fiji has won the Best Stylish Fashion Film award in India. The movie, Super Model, which will be released worldwide on September 27, was given the award from Haut Monde Fashion Institute in New Delhi. Directed by Navin Batra and produced by Ravi Ahlawat and Prem Prakash Gupta, the movie was shot in Nadi, Lautoka and Sigatoka last year. Mr Ahlawat said the production cost of the movie in Fiji was about $3million. About 60 locals were part of the movie's production. The movie's local line producer and local assistant director Vineel Nand said the award was a proud moment for Fiji and a boost to tourism. Mr Nand said the movie would start screening in Village 6 and Village 4 cinemas a day before the world wide release.
Starring Jackie Shroff, Veena Malik, Ashmit Patel, Harsh Chhaya and others, the movie was produced under the Maruti Movies (Fiji) Pvt Ltd banner. It is about a fashionable journey of common girls to becoming super models and a different twist in their lives when they get trapped in a controversy. "It is probably because of all the stylish videos I have directed in my past and it helped me incorporate in my film," Mr Batra is reported saying on www. gossip-gravy.com. "Who wouldn't like the fact of being appreciated in my very first venture? It is not like I have Bollywood's biggest stars but our team has done all that it takes to be a big movie. ONE of the luxurious homes on the exclusive Wakaya Island is being sold at auction with no reserve next month. And according to online reports, the 23,000 square feet home with its own white beach and private rainforest has been valued at GBP7.5million ($F22.32m). The 46-acre Rai Ki Wai estate is set at the highest spot on the island and includes six suites in separate pavilions each with ensuite bathrooms, decks and gardens. The house has an additional bedroom with a full bathroom and Fijian hardwood floors styled on Balinese and Asian designs. The estate is owned by American Giselle Fernandez, who told Daily Mail the Fijian people's village traditions had become theirs and were entrenched in their lives in countless ways. "The seascapes and sparkling reefs and vistas embraced us with nature's grandest offerings. I can't say enough about our 11 magical years on Wakaya Island and the enchantment of our grand Rai Ki Wai estate," Ms Fernandez told Daily Mail. "We loved it so much. We spent months at a time over the years, shared its enchanting wiles with friends and family and raised our child there. "Now with our daughter growing up
and in school and grandchildren here in the US, and more on the way, our lives have changed, and it's not so easy to escape away as we once did." The Wakaya Group chief operating officer Meliki Tuinamuana said they had a few private homes on the island, which were lots sold off to homeowners in the early days. "There are eight private homes on Wakaya which are owned by homeowners. These homeowners have agreements with Wakaya which provide a platform for services that are provided by Wakaya to the homeowners such as access to roads, the jetty, trash collection, and certain other services," she said. "Wakaya works with the existing homeowners, or their successors, in providing such services and ensuring that Wakaya remains the ecologically sustainable paradise that it is today." Meanwhile, the house features a main pavilion with a 4200 square feet living and bar area, and a separate pavilion housing a 500 square feet master bedroom. Guest pavilions have 32-foot ceilings, spa bathtubs, indoor and outdoor showers and private decks. The estate also has an outdoor pool with an unobstructed view of the ocean.

Prime Minister Josaia Bainimarama met with His Excellency Hassan Rouhani, the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Iran currently holds the Presidency of the Non Aligned Movement with its 120 Member States, while Fiji holds the Chairmanship of the Group of 77 and China with its 132 Member States. President Rouhani and Prime Minister Bainimarama discussed the challenges and opportunities of presiding over such a large group of countries, and how the two groups can fully play their part in current global peace, security, social and economic situations. President Rouhani stressed that solutions are needed for the instability being experienced in the Middle East, including in Syria, and expressed his hope that groups like the Non Aligned Movement would be able to bring to bear some influence on lasting peaceful solutions, while recognising the large and diverse nature of such Groups. President Rouhani wished Prime Minister Bainimarama the best for his tenure as Chair of the G77, and assured him of Iran's support in this regard. Prime Minister Bainimarama explained that Fiji's commitment to assisting peace
and security in the Middle East came from its long participation in UN Peacekeeping Missions, most recently through deploying over 500 personnel to the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) in the Golan Heights. He said this followed on from Fiji's past participation in UNIFIL in Lebanon, and current participation in UNAMI in Iraq and the MFO in the Sinai. President Rouhani assured Iran's support to Fiji's peacekeepers as part of these UN Missions, and expressed the hope that in each of the countries where Fiji serves in the Middle East, lasting peaceful solutions can be obtained, as it has been many years since these places have had to rely on UN peacekeeping for stability. Finally, Prime Minister Bainimarama and President Rouhani discussed bilateral ties between Iran and Fiji, which were formalised on 30 August 2012 in Tehran. Both expressed their desire to promote and enhance bilateral ties, including in the areas of tourism and the sugar industry. They tasked their respective Ministers of Foreign Affairs to follow up on bilateral ties between the Islamic Republic of Iran and Fiji.

More than 300 Fijians residing overseas have so far indicated their interest to register to vote in the 2014 elections. Fijis Attorney General and Minister for Elections Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said the process will begin in New Zealand, taking place on October 23-31. The registration drive will then move to Australia and to other parts of the world including the UK and the West Coast of North America. The process is estimated to cost FJ$40,000. For the first leg of overseas registration in New Zealand, teams will be deployed to Wellington and
Auckland, Sayed-Khaiyum said. Details on the specific locations and opening hours will be available soon on the elections office website (www.electionsfiji.gov.fj), in the local NZ media, and through Fijis High Commission in NZ. The overseas registration drive follows on the local EVR process which saw close to 540,000 Fijians registered. Meanwhile, acting Permanent Secretary Responsible for Elections, Mohammed Saneem, reminded all Fijians living abroad that a valid Fijian passport will be required in order to register as an overseas voter.
Positive parenting is at the heart of the awareness and advocacy programs facilitated by the Child Services Unit of the Ministry of Social Welfare, Women and Poverty Alleviation. This was reiterated by the Assistant Director Child Services Unit, Ms Ela Tukutukulevu during her presentation at the Social Justice Seminar organised by the Saint Agnes Parish in Suva recently. Ms Tukutukulevu said Government has partnered with the UNICEF (United Nations Childrens Fund) to create awareness in the communities on the importance of parental role in raising healthy children. She said the facilitation package called, Children Are a Precious Gift from God Facilitation Manual is one of the instrumental tools available in creating awareness on positive parenting. Launched in 2012, the package is designed to build on community appreciation of children and drawing their attention on some of the issues which children face in their development. It targets community leaders, faithbased leaders, parents and care-givers to identify ways in which they can better deal with issues on child protection
and care. The package facilitates discussions with communities on issues of child welfare, using the theme children are a gift from god as an entry point to get the communities to take ownership of creating supportive and conducive environment for children, Ms Tukutukulevu said. A key aspect of the package is on positive parenting, positive discipline, types of problems faced by children and we have tried to bring it under the umbrella that children are precious and their welfare and care is of utmost priority. There are contextualized tools to create awareness aligned to child protection and without the community commitment to address the reality of issues that influence children protection, we cannot responsibly nurture our children. The package challenges our mindsets as parents, leaders and mentors in the communities, she said. Ms Tukutukulevu said so far the Ministry has already reached out to more than 50 communities through 16 trainings on the facilitation package and the way forward for 2014 is to strengthen partnership with relevant stakeholders to raise awareness on child protection in Fiji.

A male gorilla is leaving Dallas Zoo to have therapy after he bit one female gorilla and sneered at others. Patrick, a 195-kilogram Western lowland gorilla, will be moving to the Riverbanks Zoo and Gardens in Columbia, South Carolina, where he will live the bachelor life in his own digs. The South Carolina zoo is known for working with gorillas with behavioural problems. Dallas Zoo officials said Patrick gets along fine with humans but not with other gorillas. They said they have repeatedly tried to get him to socialise with the other gorillas, particularly the females, in the hope that he might get along and even breed. Instead, he bit one female and sneered and nipped at others. "It's not like we haven't tried, he's been here for 18 years," Dallas Zoo spokeswoman Laurie Holloway said. Patrick was more tolerant of other male gorillas but seemed only to engage with Jabari, who was shot to death by Dallas police after he escaped in 2004 and injured three people. Because of his cranky behaviour, Patrick has been kept in his own habitat separate from the other gorillas. The Dallas Zoo needs to reclaim Patrick's space because it recently acquired two new males from the Calgary Zoo, including Zola, a breakdancing gorilla who stars in a video that has gone viral on the internet. John Davis, curator of mammals at the Riverbanks Zoo, said Patrick will initially be separated from the zoo's three other gorillas, all males, but will be able to see and smell them. Patrick will eventually be introduced to the other males and zoo officials are not ruling out the possibility they can live together in a spacious bachelor pad, Mr Davis said. Born at the Bronx Zoo in 1990, Patrick was abandoned by his mother and transferred to the Toronto Zoo, where he was hand-raised along with another male about the same age. At age 5 he was transferred to Dallas, zoo officials said. Because of his rearing, Patrick gets along well with people and is a popular favourite among visitors and zookeepers at the zoo, Ms Holloway said. "He's beautiful and smart and everyone loves him," she said. "We're really sad to see him go but it's for the best for the zoo and for Patrick."
Peru has replaced Colombia as the world's top producer of coca, a South American plant used to make cocaine, a UN study said. Last year coca plants covered 60,400 hectares in Peru - 20 per cent more than in Colombia, according to a report from the UN Office on Drugs and Crime. Eradication efforts in Colombia helped slash the total area of coca-growing fields by 25 per cent to 48,000 hectares last year, the UN said. In Peru coca stopped gaining ground
Man Wins $400M Powerball Jackpot After Failed Hot Dog Bun Mission
The winner of a nearly $400 million Powerball jackpot has declined to be named, lottery officials said on Monday, but they said the winner who lives near Columbia, South Carolina, told them he bought the ticket while on a mission to buy hot dog buns. The man stopped at a gasoline station in central South Carolina after his wife asked him to pick up the hot dog buns, but after finding they had none, he bought $20 of Powerball tickets instead, the officials said. His big win late on Wednesday - the fourth-largest prize in the lottery's history - occurred on just the second time he had purchased tickets, the man told lottery officials. "This is a life changing event - there are a lot of zeros in this money," Paula Harper Bethea, executive director of the South Carolina Education Lottery, had said last week while the winner remained unknown. When he came forward on Monday afternoon, the man, who asked not be identified, told lottery officials that he was home alone when he discovered on Thursday that he won. He spun around repeatedly in his kitchen and told only his little dog about his good fortune, lottery officials said. The man can claim his full prize of $399.4 million paid over 29 years or opt for a more immediate cash payout of $233 million, officials said. For the state of South Carolina, the jackpot win means an additional $15 million in tax revenue, officials said. The lottery benefits education in the state, they said. Murphy USA gasoline station in Lexington, South Carolina, where the man bought the machine-generated winning ticket on Wednesday afternoon will be rewarded $50,000 for its role, lottery officials said. Powerball prizes have been getting larger, in part because the ticket price rose to $2 from $1 in January, and because California, the most populous U.S. state, joined in April. Powerball is played in 43 states, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Chances of winning the big prize are 1 in 175 million, the lottery said. The largest Powerball jackpot was $590.5 million, won by a Florida woman in May. Ticket holders in New Jersey and Minnesota shared a $448 million jackpot in August. The amounts paid to the winners were substantially smaller because they chose cash over an annuity.

The family of a British climber killed in New Zealand have said they can't afford to fly his body home or attend his funeral. Robert Buckley, 31, died while climbing Mt Sefton in Aoraki Mt Cook National Park on September 14. Mr Buckley, from Shoebury in Essex, had been living in Christchurch for a year. His family told the newspaper they could not afford the GBP5000 (NZD$9663) cost of bringing his body home, and were resigned to missing his cremation in New Zealand. His mother Gill Ray, a part-time cleaner, said a friend in New Zealand was arranging the ceremony. "Flying 24 hours to get there, knowing what you're going there for, is not something I want to go through. And of course the cost of flying there is another thing I can't afford," she told the newspaper. The family had thought Mr Buckley's
travel insurance would allow them to bring his body home, but were told because he had been resident in New Zealand for more than six months, it was no longer valid. "I was really angry about it, but it is hard to think straight at the moment, to be honest," she said. "It is such a hard time. I can't get used to talking about him saying how he 'was' instead of how he 'is'." The family would instead be flying his ashes home from New Zealand after the funeral. Mr Buckley had attempted to climb to Sefton Bivvy from Mt Cook Village on September 14 with three other young men. He was within 80 meters of the bivvy when he slipped and fell 700 metres to his death, police said. Police described the climbers as being inexperienced and insufficiently equipped for the climb.
Burger King Worldwide has introduced lower fat french fries as consumer groups and nutrition experts in the United States increase pressure on the food industry to offer healthier alternatives. The Miami-based hamburger chain, called Hungry Jacks in Australia and known for its Whopper hamburgers, says its new "Satisfries" contain 40 per cent less fat and 30 per cent fewer calories than those sold by archrival McDonald's. McDonald's, widely considered to have the fast-food industry's most popular french fries, declined on Tuesday to say whether it will offer fries with a lower fat content. Some restaurant operators are embracing healthier food in large part because many consumers will pay a bit more for it. To that end, Burger King will sell its new fries for a premium, at a suggested price of $US1.89 ($2) for a small portion versus $US1.59 for its existing fries. A small serving of Satisfries has 270 calories and 11 grams of fat, while the older Burger King fries have 340

calories and 15 grams of fat. Burger King's new fries are crinklecut and thinly coated with a batter that absorbs less oil, the company said. They were developed in partnership with french fry supplier McCain Foods and are exclusive to Burger King, a spokeswoman said. More than one-third of Americans are obese, and about 10 per cent of the US healthcare bill is tied to obesity-related illnesses such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease and hypertension, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. The Center for Science in the Public Interest is among the groups lobbying the US food industry to make healthier products. Margo Wootan, its director of nutrition policy, called Burger King's new fries a "step in the right direction" and urged the chain to do more. "If people are going to eat fries, the new fries are an improvement," Ms Wootan said. "Now Burger King needs to get as inventive with other vegetables and add more to the menu."
Thinking of trading in your SUV for something a little more compact? How about this teeny tiny automobile that just scored the Guinness Word Record for the Smallest Car in the World? Designed by custom car builder Austin Coulson, the one-off, pint-sized vehicle is 25-inches high, just over 2 feet wide and a squeak over 4 feet long. OK, it's not the most practical ride, but it is roadworthy and has all the bells and whistles to
pass inspection, including windshield wipers, turn signals and an adorable little horn. Sadly, it gets terrible gas mileage of around 45 mpg. At first glance the cute car looks like it would be right at home parked outside Barbie's Dream House, but it's got a serious side, too; detailing reminiscent of P51 Mustang military planes and the sides are inscribed with the tail numbers of the ship that Coulson's grandpa served on during WWII.

The provincial government declared an emergency in Awaran and the military mobilised medical teams as well as 200 soldiers and paramilitary troops to help with the immediate relief effort. "We have received reports that many homes in Awaran district have collapsed. We fear many deaths," Baluchistan government spokesman Jan Muhammad Baledi told the news channel. "There are not many doctors in the area but we are trying to provide maximum facilities in the affected areas." Television footage showed collapsed houses, caved-in roofs and people sitting in the open air outside their homes, the rubble of mud and bricks scattered around them. Awaran district has an estimated population of around 300,000 scattered over an area of more than 21,000 square kilometres. In the regional capital of Quetta, officials said some areas appeared to be badly damaged but it was hard to assess the impact quickly because the locations were so remote. caused the seabed to rise and create a small, mountain-like island about 600 metres off Pakistan's Gwadar coastline in the Arabian Sea. Television channels showed images of a stretch of rocky terrain rising above the sea level, with a crowd of bewildered people gathering on the shore to witness the rare phenomenon. "It is not a small thing, but a huge thing which has emerged from under the water," Gwadar resident Muhammad Rustam said. "It looked very, very strange to me and also a bit scary because suddenly a huge thing has emerged from the water." Enterprising boat owners were doing a brisk trade ferrying curious sightseers to the island - dubbed "Earthquake Mountain" by locals. However, the spokesman of the government's National Disaster Management Authority, Kamran Zia, said the island would not survive long because sea waves would eventually break it down. "This is not a permanent structure, just a body of mud," he said. "It will disappear over time."

Russia's prime minister Dmitry Medvedev has backed a proposal to make divorce far more expensive as a way of discouraging ill-considered matches. "The motives (for the suggestion) are understandable: switch on your brain when you're getting married, otherwise there's going to be material penalties," the prime minister said in comments aired on state media. Mr Medvedev, who served as Russia's president between 2008 and 2012, was commenting on a proposal submitted by senators that would increase the state fees for divorce to almost 30,000 rubles ($1,000), a huge rise from the current charge of 400 rubles ($13.40). Costly divorce cases are relatively rare in Russia, which has one of the world's most lenient divorce procedures, with couples able to annul their marriages out of court in a single procedure at a wedding office. In cases where the divorce is contested, relatively little justification is required. Karina Krasnova, a lawyer from the company Russian Divorce, said: "In Russia the situation is very favourable
for divorce. It's much cheaper because you can do it independently, because you'd don't need lawyers." Some, including Mr Medvedev, have suggested that this easy-going regime, a legacy of the Soviet Union, promotes a cavalier attitude towards matrimony, leading to high rates of divorce. According to a global UN survey, Russia has the 15th highest female divorce rate and the 28th highest for men. The Soviet Union was one of the first countries in the world to allow "nofault" divorce requiring no justification for splitting, as the Communist state sought to destroy what it considered the bourgeois construct of the family. In the 1930s, 40 per cent of Soviet marriages ended in divorce. Joseph Stalin later reversed this policy, but divorce remained relatively straightforward. The discussion on reducing family breakups coincides with a campaign by the Russian government to encourage more conservative family values in keeping with those traditionally promoted by the Russian Orthodox Church.
An operation carried out by surgeon Jayant Patel on a Bundaberg patient was justified, the District Court in Brisbane has heard. Patel, 63, is accused of causing grievous bodily harm to Ian Vowles over an operation at the Bundaberg Hospital in 2004 in which part of his colon was removed. Former surgeon Dr William Kingston told the court Mr Vowles had suffered two serious colon cancers and a haemorrhage in the four years before the operation in question. He says Patel's decision to operate on another pre-malignant polyp in 2004 was justified and saved the patient from future colon cancers. Prosecutors have argued Patel unnecessarily removed Mr Vowles's rectum and large bowel and the surgery was criminally negligent. The prosecution said while the operation was not incompetently performed, it should never have been done.
But defence barrister Ken Fleming QC told jurors Mr Vowles did not have a healthy colon. Mr Fleming said in 1999 Mr Vowles had half his colon removed due to cancer and in 2003 more cancer was found and it was completely removed. In 2004 another polyp was detected, which proved to be benign, Mr Fleming said. Mr Fleming said Patel assessed Mr Vowles as having familial cancer, which is why he removed his large bowel and rectum. The case continues.

Brandon Gullickson was hit Saturday night on the Fraser Highway at 176th Street
A Good Samaritan is in critical but stable condition after he was struck by a car while trying to help another motorist on a Langley highway. Brandon Gullickson was hit Saturday night on the Fraser Highway around 176th Street. Gullicksonm, who has back injuries and a shattered leg, said he was driving home with his girlfriend and his sister in the car when he noticed someone at the side of the road. "Everyone's passing her, you know. Dark out, late at night... everyone's passing her, not caring. So I went out of my way, did a Uey, after I asked everyone in the car if I should. We agreed, so I pulled over, gave her a jump." Gullickson said the driver managed to travel only a block or so before she needed another jumpstart. "As I was jumping her the second time, I heard 'Watch out.' Looked up, seeing headlights, hit my car, my car rammed into her car, I rolled under my car, legs above my head." Gullickson's girlfriend, Cassy Dryden, was also seriously injured in the incident with a broken neck. RCMP Cpl. Bert Paquette says it's too soon to say if speed or alcohol were factors, or if charges will be laid. "The Good Samaritan, as far as we know, suffered significant injuries and is in critical but stable condition in hospital at this time," he said. Although he worries about having to pay the bills while not being able to work, Gullickson said he doesn't regret being a Good Samaritan. "I'm glad that I helped her. I don't have any regrets helping her," he said. Friends have set up an account at the Bank of Montreal to help pay for the couple's expenses. Photos of the couple in hospital were posted to a Facebook page called the "Cassy Dryden and Brandon Gullickson Fund" on Tuesday.

The West Vancouver School District has clarified reports that a student was injured in a fall on the Grouse Grind hiking trail Wednesday, triggering a 911 call-out of firefighters and ambulances. The North Vancouver District firefighters issued several statement on Twitter saying they were helping an 11-year-old down off the Grouse Grind trail. It was eventually revealed the child
did not suffer a fall, as was mistakenly reported, but was simply out of breath. "His mother was called, she joined him and they resumed the class field trip as planned," said a statement issued by the West Vancouver School District communications manager Bev Pausche. "Our staff handled the situation according to district policies and procedures," said the statement.
A pilot was pulled out of the wreckage of a fiery plane crash in Fort Nelson, B.C., Wednesday, transportation officials said. The pilot is alive and was the only person on board at the time, a spokesperson for the Transportation Safety Board said. It's unknown at this time if he sustained any injuries. No one on the ground was hurt. The pilot told RCMP investigators that the crash was a result of an engine failure and fire, officials said. The plane was already in flames when it went down just after 4 p.m. PT Wednesday in the middle of an intersection in an industrial area of the
Northern B.C. community. William Alde says he watched for about a minute as the pilot struggled to land the plane safely. "Somebody pointed out a plane going down. We turned around and looked and the tail was on fire. It was coming down really low, close enough you could throw a rock at it," he said. "It kept coming down, it went right through some power lines, landed on the road in front of Kal Tire here. I believe they got him out okay, and it was on fire." Transportation officials say the plane was a C-Wind 2000 plane, which is "amateur built."

Paragon Development Ltd. has laid out its plans for a new $535 million casino next to BC Place Stadium, a project being billed as a "world class urban resort." Paragon and its partners held a news conference in Vancouver to outline the plan. There was a firestorm of protest the last time Paragon tried to put a new casino next to the stadium, and Paragon president Scott Menke says the company got the message. We needed to do that because we needed to get it right, he said. The concept that we are here to share with you today meets all those goals. The urban resort concept is very different than the casino resorts that many people think of, especially the ones in Las Vegas. This 675,000-square-foot development would feature two hotels, a conference centre, restaurants, retail outlets and a new home for the existing Edgewater casino, which features 600 slot machines and 75 gaming tables.
Opponents speak out Much of the opposition to the last proposal centred around plans to expand the casino to as many as 1,500 slot machines and 150 gaming tables. "If there is any hint of expansion of gambling either now or in the future I am voting against it," said Vancouver Counc. Kerry Jang. "Under our watch, we said no expansion of gambling. This is not a done deal." On Tuesday, Sandy Garossino, spokeswoman for anti-casino group Vancouver Not Vegas, said she was suspicious of the new proposal. "There must be a plan at some point in the future, if not today, at some point... to shoe-horn the gaming tables and slot machines we rejected so soundly," she said. Paragon and PavCo, which owns the land, have already signed a development agreement. The new plan still needs approval from the city but the developers are hoping the urban resort will be open for business in 2016.

Ontario drivers are the first in Canada who can renew their licences online. Government Services Minister John Milloy announced Wednesday that the province is offering this service to drivers who qualify. It always happens on your birthday and I think people would rather be doing other things on their birthday than standing in line, Milloy added. Most drivers will only have to appear in person to renew their licences every 10 years to update their photo. The service is available to drivers who hold G, D or M class licences. In addition to licence renewals, motorists can get licence plate stickers, driver abstracts and other related products through the same online transaction. When it comes to seniors who are in a category where they need more frequent testing, they will have to go
to ServiceOntario to get it updated, he said. Its for individuals where its very straightforward which is about 80%. Other drivers who would have to line up in person include anyone with an outstanding fine or a cancelled or suspended licence. In an online transaction, a driver is required to print out a temporary licence that will be valid for 90 days if it is kept with the expired licence. The provincial government says this self-printed licence will be accepted by police and will be valid outside Ontario. We are committed to making it easier and more convenient for the people of Ontario to access important government services, Milloy said. Drivers licences join a long list of provincial services available online including birth, death and marriage certificates.
A provincial judge says a local government in B.C.'s North Okanagan didn't do enough to protect citizens from contaminated water during an E. coli outbreak. The Regional District of the North Okanagan has been found guilty of four charges under the Water Act and the Drinking Water Protection Act. No one reported getting sick, but nearly 4,000 people were left without potable water in the Coldstream area for nearly a month in January 2010 when E. coli and other bacteria seeped into a well system east of Vernon. The contamination happened after a torrential downpour caused flooding in the area.
Patrick Nicol, board chair for the Regional District of the North Okanagan, said the district spent $70,000 on legal fees fighting the charges. "We thought we had a very strong case with due diligence," Nicol said. "We had no issues with health in trying to address the problem." Nicol said the district sent out public notices and did all it could to protect people from contamination. The District of Coldstream and the farm where the manure originated plead guilty to charges stemming from the incident, and were fined $18,000. Similar fines are expected for the Regional District of the North Okanagan.

broach the issue, since you dont want to knock your teens self-esteem. But experts say that its OK to set some minimum hygiene standards like showering daily and wearing clean clothes -- as part of their household responsibilities. If your kids dont, the usual punishments apply. Be a good example. Want your kids to clean up their act? Clean up yours first. If one of the parents is slovenly and doesnt provide a good example, how can you expect the teen to be conscientious about keeping things clean? Dont micromanage. Give your teens a task and a deadline. Then back off and let them accomplish it in their own way. So when your sons doing yard work, dont keep butting in with leaf-raking tips. Dont keep pushing your daughter, for her own sake, to get her laundry out of the way first thing in the morning. Sure, you mean well. But youre getting involved when you dont need to be, and probably driving your kids nuts which could make for some unnecessary conflict. Keep your cool. So your son told you five times! that he would take out the garbage. But he didnt, and the trashcans are now overflowing and buzzing with flies. Sure, youre angry. But try not to let anger dictate what you do next. As much as you can, you want to stick to the responsibilities and repercussions that youve worked out with your teen. Keeping things predictable will make it less personal and less heated. Dont be mean. Parents have to be careful not to get negative. Dont start demeaning your kid, calling her a slob all the time. That doesnt work. Instead, you need to help build your teens self-image, and to encourage basic cleanliness as a sign of self-respect. Consider the larger issues. If you tell your teens that youre making them wash your car to build their character, that probably wont go over well. But remember that requiring your teens to clean up around the house isnt only about your personal desire to have a neat living room. Theres a larger purpose to getting your kids to clean up after themselves. Parents are teaching their kids an important lesson about respecting other people and other peoples property. Keeping things tidy really will matter when theyre adults. In a few years, these adolescents will be on their own and dating. Theyll have roommates. They need to know how to clean up after themselves. Treating your teens seriously and talking about how their behavior will affect their adult lives might really help the conversation. Theres some final advice thats at least
as important as the other suggestions: Dont try to change who your kids are. Part of the issue here is personality and temperament. Can you require that your teens do their own laundry and pick up their shoes? Yes. Can you make sloppy teens become a fastidious, tidy people? No no more than you can make them, through force of will, into concert cellists or medal-winning high divers. Our kids are not ourselves. You cant
impose your own personality on them. So as parents, you need to set some standards for how your kids behave in your house and some expectations they have to meet. But dont go too far beyond that. Dont try to change how they think. Respecting your teens individuality can mean compromise accepting that theyre just not quite as tidy as you wish they were, and that its not something that arguing will change.

A new study has found that red grapes and blueberries can enhance immune function in humans. In an analysis of 446 compounds for their the ability to boost the innate immune system in humans, researchers in the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University discovered just two that stood out from the crowd - the resveratrol found in red grapes and a compound called pterostilbene from blueberries. Both of these compounds, which are called stilbenoids, worked in synergy with vitamin D and had a significant impact in raising the expression of the human cathelicidin antimicrobial peptide, or CAMP gene, that is involved in immune function. The findings were made in laboratory cell cultures and do not prove that similar results would occur as a result
of dietary intake, the scientists said, but do add more interest to the potential of some foods to improve the immune response. "Out of a study of hundreds of compounds, just these two popped right out," Adrian Gombart, an LPI principal investigator and associate professor in the OSU College of Science, said. "Their synergy with vitamin D to increase CAMP gene expression was significant and intriguing. It's a pretty interesting interaction," he said. Resveratrol has been the subject of dozens of studies for a range of possible benefits, from improving cardiovascular health to fighting cancer and reducing inflammation. This research is the first to show a clear synergy with vitamin D that increased CAMP expression by several times, the scientists said.
Hair Woes Rising, But Be Cautious Of Haircare Products Bad hair day? Well, going by the recent Nitin Walia, consultant in the
spurt of ads on hair care products, everyone is moaning over hair woes. Thanks to lifestyle changes, hair problems are becoming increasingly common in both women and men, doctors say, warning against being misled by random products bought over the counter. "Hair problems are becoming common these days and we have noticed an increase of 10-12 percent in patients coming with such problems every year. Similarly, the demand for hair transplants has also increased over the last five years," D.M. Mahajan, dermatologist at Delhi's Apollo Hospital, said. The nature of hair problems is varied hair fall, thinning, baldness, dandruff, scalp problems and the like. Depending on the age group, some problems are more common than others. "The most common problem that inflicts people across all age groups is hair loss. This is a big concern for women and young males. The second most common problem is dandruff. This is usually related to climate, type of water and soap and shampoo used," Mohan Thomas, cosmetic surgeon at Mumbai's Breach Candy Hospital, said. Usually, men suffer from hair loss at an earlier age than women, he added. "Concerns about hair loss are usually more in men and at a younger age, starting as early as in their 20s". The reason for hair loss could be anything - bad lifestyle, poor diet, pollution, hormones or even genetics. But stress is the big culprit behind the increasing hair woes among people, doctors say. "Stress is a major factor behind hair loss. Hair is the fastest growing organ in the human body but has less stability. So when there is a change in season, or an exam coming up, it is generally accompanied with hair loss. Plus, there are other factors, like not enough exposure to sun and vitamin D deficiency, peer pressure or anxiety," Mahajan said.
dermatology department at Delhi's Max Hospital, said that women usually suffer from hair loss post-pregnancy, after menopause, or when there is a hormonal imbalance. While doctors unanimously agree that an increase in awareness among both the sexes, and at an early age, is benefitting in early detection of problems; random use of hair care products should be discouraged. "Some patients come to us after trying every possible product bought over the counter. A majority of them have tried home therapies or have gone by their hairdresser's advice. A word of advice - companies try to push the sale of their products through beauty parlours; so be careful," Walia cautioned while speaking to the reporter. Instead of relying on haircare products, doctors suggest medical intervention for problems so as to pinpoint the exact reason. For instance, women with dry and thinning hair need their thyroid hormones checked. Dandruff and boils on the scalp, if not treated early, can also lead to hair loss later. "Most of the shampoos don't carry scientific evidence of solving hair problems. They are just cleansers," Walia said. Breach Candy's Thomas recalled the case of a 38-year-old woman with grey hair who had been using a branded hair dye for years. Seeing a new product on TV, she decided to try it. "After a couple of weeks, she noticed tiny eruptions on her scalp. This led to flaking of skin and dryness of hair, further leading to hair breakage. When she approached us, we stopped the product usage and put her on low dose steroid-based creams and sun screens. It took months before the hair grew back to normal," Thomas said. "I therefore advise people to use medicated products under a doctor's supervision. Shampoos should ideally have a pH of 4.5-5; otherwise it makes your hair alkaline and dry," he added.

Sunny Leone has just wrapped up the first schedule of her upcoming action flick 'Tina and Lolo'
Devang Dholakia's film has the adult star- turned-actress indulge in some heavy-duty gun slinging and fist pumping action. Even though there was a choice for a body double, the Jism 2 starlet insisted on doing her own stunts. Eyebrows were raised about the wisdom behind casting Sunny known for her sensual image as the protagonist. She is apparently keen to make her detractors eat humble pie in a conscious effort to change her perceived image. Says Sunny, `I have left no stone unturned to give my character Tina the very best preparation and show the audience a whole new side of me. The look is glamorous but there is more to it considering the extraordinary
circumstances my character finds myself in. Devang has given me a role that most actresses would love to sink their teeth into.` She also undertook several sessions with boxing champion Terry Norris to know how to fight naturally. To not look out of place while performing the stunts, Sunny learnt how to ride a bike and also frequented a shooting club to wield the gun right. Sunny, who has Karishma Tanna as her co-star in the film, is so serious about her makeover that she is keen to add the action heroine quotient as well. She has even apparently sought inspiration from Angelina Jolie's look in Lara Croft Tomb Raider.
Beauty and well-being are assets for all actresses, and Anushka Sharma makes sure she doesn't compromise on either. She has revealed her love for moisturisers, which she has in every corner of her house and even in her car. "I have an obsession with moisturizers and I am not kidding. In my house there is a moisturiser everywhere," the
25-year-old actress said at the Nivea Rock The Ramp contest. "I can't not have a moisturiser, even in my car! It's one thing that really adds to your beauty and it is everywhere. So it's an obsession," she added. Anushka is currently busy shooting for Anurag Kashyap's "Bombay Velvet" with Ranbir Kapoor and Rajkumar Hirani's "Peekay" with Aamir Khan.

Whether you know trucks or not, the Chevrolet Silverado is likely a familiar vehicle; in a huge swath of variations, it's the tool of choice for those who need to get things done. From sport trucks to hybrids, and up off-road rigs and heavy-duty models, the Silverado 1500 still stacks up well against rivalsno matter what the priority. The only exception might be styling; with no significant changes to its exterior or interiorsave a few minor touchessince the 2007 model year, when this generation made its debut the 2012 Chevrolet. It still looks like it means business (or pleasure, to truck folks), but with the introduction of a refreshed Ram 1500 lineup this year, the Silverado is now by far the most dated design of the Big Three trucks. For 2013 there are no major changes to the 2013 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 lineup; it still takes on the Ford F-150, Ram 1500, and the closely related GMC Sierra 1500. Just as before, there's no lack of models and build combinations. Chevy's full-size trucks come in a form to suit nearly every possible kind of truck user, from boot-wearing Texas hipsters to tie-wearing urban commercial architectsand everything in between. Shoppers can opt into one of three body styles, and one of two interior designs; from among four gas engines and two automatic transmissions, or one gas-electric drivetrain; and from bed lengths ranging from the smallest 5'-8" bed on Crew Cabs and Hybrids, to the 6-6" bed on all versions save for the Hybrid, to the 8' bed offered on all versions except the Hybrid. The powertrains offered in the Silverado are still competitiveexcept for the base 195-horsepower, 4.3-liter V-6, which we'd only recommend to
Autos
fleet buyers. At the base level if you want a V-8 is the flex-fuel, 302-hp 4.8-liter; it's perfectly adequate but comes with a four-speed automatic transmission. A flex-fuel 5.3-liter V-8 with 315 hp comes in more mainstream versions, and it's outfitted with fuelsaving cylinder deactivation in some models; and at the top of the range, a 6.2-liter, 403-hp, flex-fuel V-8 in the Silverado LTZ. The 5.3-liter is our choice of the gas-only Silverados: it has ample power for almost every need, and comes with only a slight gasmileage penalty over the basic V-6. Although the Silverado Hybrid has not been a top seller by any means, GM is continuing to offer it, and its 20-mpg city, 23 highway EPA ratings actually make them smart picks. The Silverado Hybrid is quite different from the other Silverado models, thanks to a two-mode hybrid powertrain that pairs an aluminum-alloy 6.0-liter V-8 with cylinder deactivation and variable valve timing, to an electrically variable transmission (EVT) with four fixed-ratio gears and two electric motor/generators, as well as a nickel-
metal-hydride 300-volt battery pack. All together, these pieces combine to produce 332 horsepower and 367 pound-feet of torque. Despite its extra heft, the Silverado Hybrid can tow 6,100 pounds with 2WD, or 5,900 pounds with automatic dual-range four-wheel drive, and it performs about as well as 5.3-liter standard versionsalthough steering isn't quite as responsive. Make these your priority before you hit the road this winter. Winter tires are a must Winter tires can help keep you safe on the roads this winter. As temperatures drop below 7C, all season tires begin to lose grip. Winter tires, however, are made of rubber compounds that stay soft and pliable, even in cold temperatures. Plus, their treads are designed to dig into ice and snow, giving you even more control over your vehicle. Inspect or replace wiper blades Some wiper blades are not built to withstand snow and ice in extreme conditions. Winter-specific wiper blades encase the structure of a traditional wiper with a rubber boot, helping prevent snow and ice from building up. Beam blades do not have hinges or frames, so there's nothing for the ice and snow to stick to. They also apply an even pressure across the entire length of the blade giving you clearer vision on the road. Get an oil change with synthetic oil Synthetic oil provides better engine protection from "cold starts" than conventional motor oil. Always refer to your Owner's Manual to ensure you use the right grade of synthetic oil. Top up winter windshield washer fluid Winter windshield washer fluid is formulated to prevent freezing on your windshield, and has strong detergents to clean away salt and sand effectively. Get your battery tested The average life of a car battery in Canada is just under 5 years. If your battery is more than 3 years old, get it tested annually. If it's more than 5 years old, get it replaced. You wouldn't wait for the batteries in your smoke alarm to die before replacing them why wait until your car battery leaves you stranded? Inspect lights Visibility is the most important part of driving. Your lighting system should be at peak performance for winter. Bulbs dont burn out instantly; they dim over time, so make sure to check if yours are operating at optimal performance levels, and always replace them in pairs. Think about whether a headlight restoration kit is the right option for you it will help ensure your plastic headlights are clear. Monitor tire pressure Your tire pressure changes when the tires are cold. For every 5.6C (10F), your tire pressure will change 1 psi (pounds per square inch) either up or down. A change up to 5 psi can affect a tire's performance, causing increased wear and fuel consumption. Check your owner's manual and make sure your tires are inflated to the recommended pressure. Use Gas Line Antifreeze When your gas tank is not always full, condensation can form and freeze, blocking the gas line. Gas line antifreeze helps prevent freezing and allows your engine to harmlessly burn off any condensation. Give your vehicle a winter-ready tune-up Cold temperatures can affect your vehicle's performance. Check your spark plugs, brakes, steering & suspension, and exhaust to ensure your vehicle performs optimally in cold weather. Prepare an emergency winter roadside kit. Even the most winter-ready drivers should be prepared for the unexpected. You probably know which foods are good for you, but do you know which ones are bad for you? Dr. Bryce Wylde gives us his list of the 10 foods we should absolutely avoid. In his book, The Antioxidant Prescription, Dr. Bryce Wylde addresses what science has discovered to be the true underlying cause of disease: free radicals. Luckily, free radical damage can be avoided, especially if you avoid these foods. 1. Fast food. You dont need me to go into more detail about fast foods. Avoid em. 2. Hydrogenated fats. As we all know by now, these fats must be avoided because they cause heart disease. Theyve been used for years in snack foods, bakery items and margarine. Avoid buying cookies, crackers, baked goods or anything else that has hydrogenated oil or trans-fats on the ingredients list. 3. Olestra is a synthetic fat used to make non-fat potato chips and other snacks. Youd think, with all the bad rap fat has garnered, a non-fat fat would be great. But Olestra has been shown to bind with fat-soluble vitamins A, E, D and K and carotenoidsour invaluable antioxidant nutrientsand to eliminate them from the system. Never mind the fact that Olestra causes stomach upset and other digestive problems, its consumption encourages people to skip over fruits and vegetables for snacks that appear to offer no threat. 4. Nitrates. Found at high levels in cured meats such as bacon and hot dogs, nitrates preserve colour and prevent microbes from taking up residence. But theyre badreally bad. The nitrate itself is harmless, but it can convert to nitrite in your body, which in turn can form nitrosamines, powerful cancercausing chemicals. Whenever possible, look for nitrate-free organic meats. If you must eat foods containing nitrates, take extra vitamin C as it is known to prevent the conversion to nitrosamines in your stomach. 5. Alcohol. Im not talking here about moderate amounts of red wine, but excessive amounts of alcohol. Liver toxicity is the main issue when we exceed our limits, and this, as weve
learned, causes free radical excess. 6. Raw oysters and sushi are great but they can carry deadly bacteria that can cause severe illness or death. You take a big risk every time you consume them. To date, no government or independent body inspects seafood for safety or will guarantee its quality. Oysters and fish are usually safe and nutritious foods if you cook them first. 7. Saturated animal fats include the fatty meats, especially beef and pork, and the skin on poultry. It also includes full-fat dairy products such as cheese, milk and cream. Fatty meat and dairy products do have some contributions to make to a dietincluding nutrients that feed your brainbut not many that cant be found elsewhere. 8. Soda pop. This is a poor way to get fluids in the short term and a great way to develop diabetes in the longer term. Pop is full of sugar or artificial sweeteners and often contains caffeine, artificial colours and flavours. Replace pop by mixing sparkling water with fresh, pure juice. Bonus: the sparkling juice tastes better than pop. (Thats why pop bottlers try to imitate it.) 9. High-fat and high-sodium snacks. These include chips, even if they are made with vegetable oil. Try to avoid these. The balance of fat in our diets has shifted too far towards the omega-6 variety found in most processed vegetable oils. We way overdo salt, leading to many cases of high blood pressure. And theres now evidence that too many of these fats and sodiumrich foods may be leading to specific chronic diseases. One reason we want to supplement the diet with the necessary omega-3 oils is to regain the proper omega balance and prevent everything from inflammation to heart disease. 10. Frozen meals. They may not be inherently bad for you if they have all the right ingredients in them, but they do keep you from eating fresh, whole, natural foods that contain more nutrients and fibre and disease-fighting phytochemicals. You may be tempted to excuse them as better than fast food. You may be sometimes pressured for time. But dont let simple laziness displace real foods in your diet.
Stop worrying about your weight, just eat right. Here are five tips you need to keep in mind. Have a healthy breakfast Foods that are high in fibre and are good sources of protein, can help you feel full for a very long time. And that, will help you control unnecessary bingeing. Protein has a very high satiety index and that is why proteins an essential part of your meals. Go for the grain
The cardinal rule to any weight loss programme is never to miss breakfast. And oatmeal, a complex carbohydrate is ideal. It is a satisfying breakfast cereal, and compared to any other grain it provides more protein per serving. The fact that it takes longer to digest and hence releases energy slowly makes it perfect because you feel full for longer. Oats also keep blood sugar and insulin levels stable, which helps prevent fat storage. Have it with skimmed milk or yogurt. Opt for skimmed milk
Grains have complex carbohydrates which during digestion release glucose slowly. Jowar, bajra and ragi etc can help in maintaining your blood sugars levels. The fibre and vitamins in them play an important role too. Snack on nuts through the day
Milk and its products are rich in calcium and can help keep your bones strong. Skimmed milk, low fat cheese and yogurt helps to break down fat cells. Bean it
Stay away from fried and salted nuts but you can munch on raw, unsalted ones almonds, and walnuts. These have essential roughage, protein, fat, minerals and micronutrient. A handful can keep hunger at bay and provide energy.

The eruption is expected to occur almost any day now. Observers are wondering how long it will take fiery new Canucks coach John Tortorella to do a Mount Vesuvius impression as a new era begins in Vancouver. It's just a matter of time, they feel, before he spews the kind of rage that eventually got him fired from his previous job with the New York Rangers. Tortorella's explosive temper is just one of the hot topics circulating in Canucks camp as the 2013-14 NHL season approaches. Many are questioning whether he can reinvigorate a team that made first-round playoff exits the past two springs. Other prominent storylines include goaltender Roberto Luongo's return to No. 1 status following Cory Schneider's trade to New Jersey; a healthy Ryan Kesler's play after two injury-plagued seasons; perennial scoring leaders Daniel and Henrik Sedin's production; winger Zack Kassian's potential increased role; highly-paid, enigmatic winger David Booth's recovery from injuries and inconsistency; and backup netminder Eddie Lack's promotion to the NHL from the minors. Tortorella's task is to win with the same veteran core that reached the 2010-11 Stanley Cup finals but has faltered amidst high expectations since then. Kesler admits that he has not been good enough the past two seasons, but takes exception with people who question whether the Canucks are on a downward spiral. "I'm thinking it's going to be a great year, not just for me but for the whole team," he said. "We're going to prove a lot of people wrong all those doubters out there. We're going to make them eat their words." He and other Canucks have welcomed the harsh criticism that Tortorella is expected to dish out. "I don't think anyone in that lockerroom will say they'll play their best for
Vigneault espoused. "Everybody wants offence," said Tortorella. "Everybody wants those pretty goals. Everyone thinks these new rules (intended to curb obstruction) are going to bring in these pretty goals. We all see what happens. You still need to have some bite and grind in the game." But no matter how much the coaching style or system changes, Vancouver's hopes, as they have many times in the past, will rest largely on Luongo. After the uncertainty of the past two seasons and a widely expected trade that did not occur, the goaltender is looking to prove himself worthy of being No. 1 again. Known for an October swoon, he is anxious to get off to a strong start and "leave all that other stuff behind and move on." He has extra incentive to play well early, because the first half of the season will also serve as his Canadian Olympic team tryout. Although his desire to remain in Vancouver was questioned following Schneider's departure, Luongo insists that he is happy to be a Canuck. But after appearing to be unwanted by management after the past two seasons, Luongo expects to face an adjustment period. "What's happened over the two years, it's a process, and I've just got to feel it out and see how it goes," he said.
New USA rugby Sevens coach Matt Hawkins will bring his Gold Coast 7s team to the Fiji Water Centennial International tournament next week. The side includes the likes of Carlin Isles, Zack Test, Nick Edwards, Jack Halalilo and Folau Niua, who all played in the Rugby World Cup Sevens in Moscow in June. Meanwhile Fiji, Samoa, PNG, Australia, American Samoa, Cook Islands, Solomon Islands and Tuvalu will play in the Fiji Water Centennial Oceania 7s tournament next Friday and

Ba 3 Auckland City 4 Ryan To Work With 16 Reps
Newly-selected Digicel Fiji 7s coach, Ben Ryan will work with 16 players prior to the Gold Coast leg of the HSBC Sevens World Series, he confirmed. With the 16 players already being chosen for him, the former England coach expects some visa issues, which is why he believes he needs to make selection fast. 16 players have been picked for me to choose from for Gold Coast and I imagine there are visa issues that means selection has to be early, Ryan said. Speaking to the media through Twitter, Ryan said he was arranging his flights and would return to England after the Gold Coast 7s to sort out a few things before he comes to Fiji for his threeyear contract with the Fiji Rugby Union. Being from another side of the world, Ryan said he would eventually need an assistant and he believes that working on the plans he has would be a slow but sure process. Its going to be a gradual process of working the plan I have in mind and I would like an assistant eventually. Ryan and his family now look forward to coming to Fiji and he thanked the Fijians for the support rendered to his appointment which he has seen even before his arrival. We are looking forward to coming over too of course! Thanks for all your support, Ryan said.
It was physical, sometimes bruising, but Auckland City FC can be satisfied with its pre-season win over Ba says Coach Ramon Tribulietx. Auckland City twice clawed its way back from trailing Ba to record a morale-boosting 4-3 win over the Fijian champions in front of a 2,300 crowd and Tribulietx declared himself pleased with aspects of the display. "Its good to play these games. Ba have been competing in their league and we've just only just started. "Games like these help us to tick over and get ready for the bigger games ahead," he said. While Ba began the game the stronger of the two sides, Tribulietx admitted some elements of the Auckland City FC performance required work but that two weeks into pre-season training this was to be expected. "We were a little disjointed but we've done as much as we've been able to. We played well in patches and we've got a lot of new people. "We did really well against a side that deservedly qualified for the OFC Champions League semifinals last season and they're playing their own national league right now so we've performed alright this evening," Tribulietx said. Ba opened the scoring through Osea Vakatalesau on 36 minutes before substitute Daniel Koprivcic equalised two minutes after halftime. Ba responded within a minute of the kickoff, again through Vakatalesau. James Pritchett levelled the game with a low header past goalkeeper Jone Ralulu on 59 minutes then another Fijian, this time Roy Krishna, nudged Auckland City ahead with an exquisite finish with the outside of his right boot
with twenty minutes to play. Vakatalesau who had an outstanding evening for Ba hit the crossbar with a snap shot before Pritchett in his tenth season with Auckland City FC gave his team a two goal cushion when his second of the game with 12 minutes left. Vakatalesau completed his hat-trick from the penalty mark after Adam McGeorge brought down Ronil Kumar on 87 minutes. With Auckland City FC now two wins from two pre-season friendlies and some trialists shorn from the original training squad that convened two weeks ago, Tribulietx's thoughts turned to Saturday's mouth-watering prestige friendly with the Wellington Phoenix at Kiwitea Street. "We want to be competitive, its part of our preparation. We'll look at patterns of play but we're also looking to compete and get ready for our own competition. "We'll try and put on our best performance we'll give no excuses. It may be a little bit early but we're delighted to have the opportunity to face professional opposition anyway," he said. Past performances that yielded friendly wins over professional opponents such as the Central Coast Mariners, Yamaga and Kyutsu Reizi had no bearing on Saturday's game according to the Auckland City FC coach. "Its about us rather than points scoring so to speak. Both teams will be looking at themselves and patterns of play but if you love what you do, and you love this game, part of you will look at the result its human nature. "We'll look at our patterns of play but try to be as competitive as we can," he said.
THE Fiji Football Association is likely to increase its grant for the Fiji Primary School Football Association InterDistrict Championship next year. The parent body handed a cheque for $6000 to the FPSFA during the opening ceremony of the IDC at the Lautoka Central School grounds. Fiji FA vice president and national team director Tarunesh Reddy said they were serious about developing soccer at the grassroots level. "I would like to thank the Lautoka Primary School Football Association for hosting the event here after a lapse of 11 years," Reddy said. "We will continue supporting this IDC and hope to increase the sponsorship from next year provided the association plays its part in promoting the sport in the right manner." Lautoka Primary School Football Association president Hirdesh Kumar said a lot of sacrifices had been made

Navua coach Saiyad Ali resigned upon the request of association president, Faud Ali. Faud said the decision was based on mutual understanding and in the best interest of Navua soccer. He further said senior players will lead the side in the lead up and during the
Courts Inter District Championship. We had a meeting this morning and I asked him (Saiyad Ali) to step down, he said. When contacted Saiyad said he would prefer to make a comment on the decision later. As I have given my word to someone and I will stand by that. Saiyad will relay the news to players when they meet up for their evening training session. Meanwhile, Navua president has thanked Saiyad for his services to the team. I thank Saiyad for all his efforts to the team and wish him the best of luck for the future, Faud said. Alis successor will be named after IDC as the senior players would take the charge of the team.
on the try scoring list has been given the captains arm band. Canada defeated Fiji 28-19 in the Bowl final at the Wellington sevens earlier this year. Fiji coach Ben Ryan in an earlier interview said he would be in the country from next week. Im not sure I will have much time with the team before the first tournament as I will only get into the country a few days before the Oceania 7s, he said. I know the squad has been training hard and William Koong has a brilliant reputation on the series circuit so I am sure they are in good shape. Everyone needs to be patient as I will have little impact over the Gold Coast tournament. Fiji and Canada are joined by Wales, and Portugal in Pool C. The Gold Coast 7s is scheduled for October 12-13 .
