Question 1 Explain the working principle of air compressor and list down of all its components. Briefly elaborate the function each of the component. How the single acting air compressor is differs from the double acting one?

Question 2 Differentiate between the with and without clearance volume of reciprocating air compressor. Sketch the indicated diagrams for each of them. Devise why clearance volume is required in reciprocating air compressor. What does it mean by minimum work term in reciprocating air compressor analysis?

Question 3 Explain what do you understand about mechanical efficiency, and volumetric efficiency in reciprocating air compressor? Derive the mathematical expressions in terms of compressors operating parameters for both efficiencies

Question 4 A single stage single acting air compressor has a cylinder diameter and stroke of 15 cm and 20 cm respectively. Air is then induced into the compressor at 1.013 bar and 28C of pressure and temperature respectively. Delivery pressure is 9.5 bar and the compressor running at 350 rpm. Disregard the clearance volume, determine; a) b) Air temperature after the compression process Indicated power required by the compressor if the compression process is to follow; i) Isothermal path ii) Adiabatic path iii) Polytropic with the constant of 1.32

Question 5 A single stage single acting air compressor is working at 900 rpm, delivering the compressed air at 20 bar. Free atmospheric air are at the pressure and temperature of 1.013 bar and 20C respectively. At the end of the intake stroke, air properties inside the cylinder are at the pressure of 0.95 bar and temperature of 42C. Clearance volume is 4% of the cylinders swept volume and free air delivery for the compressor is at 86 m3/min. Stroke to bore ratio for the cylinder is 1.5:1 and the compression is to follow the polytropic path with the compression coefficient of 1.32, determine; a) Swept volume of the cylinder b) Bore and stroke of the cylinder c) Indicated power as well as the volumetric efficiency for the compressor

Question 6 A single stage single acting compressor is operated at 500 rpm and delivers the compressed air at 6 bar. Free atmospheric air is at 1.013 bar and 24C of pressure and temperature respectively. At the end of the suction process, air properties inside the cylinder are at the pressure of 0.95 bar and temperature of 45C. Clearance volume is 4.5% of the cylinders swept volume. Stroke to bore ratio for the cylinder is 1.2:1 and the compression is to follow the polytropic path with the compression coefficient of 1.33, determine; a) Free air delivery from the compressor b) Volumetric efficiency c) Indicated power for the compressor d) Bore and stroke of the compressor
