The WSB - Bringing Our Community Together

Written by Amanda Wilson, WSB Chief Editor

When I first moved to Riyadh, I didnt go through the normal homesickness period that a lot of expats moving to the Middle East experience their first go around. I credited it to the fact that I had lived in Japan for five years and it had somewhat desensitized me from the distance I had yet again put between myself and my family and friends back home. However, a few months into my time here in Saudi and I began to feel the isolation set in. As my husband and I do a podcast for expats moving to and living in Riyadh, I had the opportunity to interview a few women who mentioned the Womens Skills Bureau to me. At the time, I had gotten most of my information about Saudi and all my interaction during the day from various expat forums. However, I remember sitting at my computer one day and remembering the organization they mentioned. It was at that time I visited the WSB website (www.wsb-ksa.com). Since that time, I have gotten to know so many wonderful ladies and no longer feel the isolation I once felt. The sense of purpose I have gained has only made me want more for myself. I believe that want and drive that I have acquired, in part from the WSB, is what makes this organization unique.

Our objective is to inspire and empower women. To provide a place where we can foster ideas and encourage one another to grow and evolve. Through workshops, presentations, and social gatherings the WSB is there to encourage that personal growth. Not only on an individual level, but community wide. Our orientation presentation, Survive and Thrive in Riyadh, is aimed at bringing a piece of mind to newcomers. The most recent workshop was held at the beautiful Hilton Garden Inn on Olaya Street on September 19th. Topics covered included: dos and donts while in the Kingdom, hospitals, Abayas, pictures, the internet and censure, and how to get active in the community. It is also a good refresher course for those of us who have been in Saudi for a while. Keep an eye on our events calendar for future Survive and Thrive in Riyadh presentations.

Inspiring Woman: Diane Baxter

Written by Leanne Mills Name: Dianne Baxter Nationality: Australian Lived in KSA: 5 years Leaving KSA: October 2013

What is your main occupation in Riyadh? I am the Accreditation Coordinator for the National Commission for Academic Accreditation & Assessment (NCAAA) and Ive worked there for the last four years. I am responsible for the coordination, administration and organization of quality reviews for all institutions and programs seeking accreditation under the NCAAA qualification framework. Tell us about the journey to your current position In my previous career, I would travel around the Middle East and, as a result, I knew I would someday live in the region; I just had this feeling that persisted for 10 years, but I never envisaged that it would be Saudi where Id spend my time! I was offered a job as a Management Consultant in August 2008 and I accepted without really knowing anything about the culture and requirements of Saudi Arabia. I just knew I was fulfilling my dream of living in the Middle East. I experienced quite a significant culture shock after I arrived; missing my home in Melbourne and my family (I have four daughters). After a short time, about eight months, I realised that Riyadh was growing on me and there were benefits to being here. Things became significantly better when I changed jobs to the one I have now. It has been one of the best places I have ever worked. To help me through the transition of settling in, I joined dance classes and became involved with the Australian Business Group. Talk us through a typical day My day starts at 6.45am. I am usually woken by cats crying for their breakfast. Yes, I feed the compound cats! My role is very busy and varied; I spend my time answering emails and phone calls, testing a new system, attending meetings, chatting with the other ladies on my floor.

I work in the ladies section and have freedom to go into the male section when I need to. If accreditation reviews are happening, then my work extends beyond normal office hours as reviewers from various countries and time zones are contacting me with different needs. I am also writing a selfpaced training program which has 13 modules and facilitation guides for new entrepreneurs associated with BADIR, a Technology Incubator Program launched in 2007. In addition, I run yoga classes on my compound five days a week. What do you enjoy most about living and working in Riyadh? The community, variety, beautiful friendships, daily challenges, the warmth (but not the summer heat), and the diversity. Also, being able to go travelling cheaply and quickly. What have been the challenges? Letting go of being a mum in its normal sense; being away from my girls. Adjusting to the culture (prayer times, segregation, wearing an abaya, not being able to try clothes on in shops, etc). Not being able to drive, particularly when something breaks down, such as a vacuum cleaner. What are you reading at the moment? Mainly entrepreneurial documents so I can complete the self paced training program I am writing. Favourite places in Riyadh? I love the desert!

OCT 2013

What are your plans for the future / personal goals? Im leaving Riyadh in early October and I will be commencing a Ph.D. back in Australia. I also want to find the time to extend my yoga teacher training. And Im looking forward to being close to family again. Ill also continue to work in Africa as a volunteer. Following my visit to Uganda during the summer, I am investigating how to purchase machines that make sanitary pads from banana fibres for the women of Uganda. I will also venture back to India to do volunteer work; mainly leadership training which inspires and motivates people to achieve all the things they aspire to.

Whats the one bit of advice that someone has given you that youve since realized was priceless? All things are possible.believe, listen to your heart and follow your intuition. It is always right. What will you miss most about Riyadh after youve left? I will miss the beautiful friendships and connections I have made. Ive met many outstanding people during my time here; they are not ego driven but act from the heart and promote and cheer the success of others. Ill also miss my cats which have been a blessing to me, particularly during times when Ive felt a little lonely.
Dianne leaves her role as Secretary of the Australian Business Group (Saudi Arabia) when she exits Riyadh at the beginning of October. If any Australian women are interested in finding out more about this voluntary role, please contact the ABGSA Chairman Orazio Moretti on 053 346 7381.

The Marriage Bureau for Rich People

Written by Marjory Woodfield Standing in a bookshop in the Athens airport, I glanced along the shelves at the different titles and covers. Something about The Marriage Bureau for Rich People by Farahad Zama made me stop. The bright cover grabbed my attention and its title made me smile. Seated on top was the bridegroom, dressed in white and gold with brightly coloured garlands of flowers and beads. The elephant was decorated too and I remember the musicians who seemed to be playing, singing and energetically dancing all at the same time. As I took the book to the shop counter and searched for the appropriate euros in payment, I thought about Saudi weddings. Theyd make an interesting and very different list. Some time later, the holiday over, the book finished, enjoyed and put to one side I wrote this list. Just Some of the Elements of a Perfect Riyadh Wedding. Reading the opening, I immediately liked the simple, uncomplicated prose style. I also liked the description of early morning traffic chaos, and Mr. Alis small garden with its guava, jasmine and curry-leaf plants. It reminded me of living in India, and I could see, hear and smell our New Delhi neighbourhood all over again. It seemed like a perfect holiday read. I flicked through a few more pages. At the very beginning, by way of establishing context I suppose, was a list entitled, Just Some of the Requirements of a Perfect Brahmin Wedding. I started reading. The mehndi henna patterning for making the bride A palanquin for carrying the bride to the grooms house Mango-leaf chains and jasmine, marigold and Kanakambaram flower decorations A coconut for breaking before the bridegroom as he arrives An idol of the elephant-headed god Ganesh Rice flour and red dust for floor designs where the bride and groom sit In my minds eye, I could see a wedding procession that had passed our New Delhi home. Id heard the approaching drums and singing from inside, and run outside in time to see a huge elephant lumbering down our narrow street. 1. Arrive at about 10 pm, even though the invitation says starting 7 pm. Nothing much happens earlier. 2. Enter the womens reception area, remembering that Saudi weddings are segregated affairs and the mens reception will happen somewhere else. 3. Look around the lavishly decorated hall. There is a stage and dais at the front and a central aisle around which seating is organized. 4. Be overwhelmed by the amazing gowns. Its all here, from skin-tight to very short, to plunging necklines. Everything sparkles and glitters. 5. Theres no bride, but there is food. This is brought in by female wait staff, who move with practised dance-like synchronicity. They carry lavishly arranged tiers of chocolate, sweets and dates, and serve Arabic coffee. 6. The music starts. A female vocalist performs against a CD of Arabic music and the dancing starts. Small groups of women go onto the stage and move slowly and rhythmically to the music. 7. Lights dim for the presentation of a short video clip showing the bride arriving outside with her father. 8. The pianist plays Fur Elise and a retinue of frilled and ruffled flower girls and bridesmaids process down the aisle.

9. The bride follows. She is an extravagance of white tulle and diamantes and as she walks slowly down the aisle; there is plenty of time to admire and appreciate. 10. Once shes seated, everyone processes up to the stage, kissing her on both cheeks as they pass. 11. The lights come on and the female wait staff appear again, moving with the same synchronicity, but this time carrying an array of beautifully coloured drinks. 12. At 1.30 am the doors open to the buffet. Women only of course. I left about this time, thinking Id not even seen the groom, but feeling too tired to wait any longer, and definitely too tired to eat.

In a little over a month Im flying down to New Zealand to help with the preparations for my daughters wedding. It will be an exciting but very different experience. A third list perhaps?

Home Business Corner

A brief insight into WSB readers home-based businesses Written by Leanne Mills

Miglio Jewellery
Name: Sunette Goosen Works from home as: a Miglio Jewellery Consultant Nationality: South African Lived in KSA: 9 years this January Tell us a little about what you do. Miglio was started in South Africa in 1981 by Mike and Jenny Miller. It is a household name for jewellery throughout South Africa with 6,000 independent consultants (and 1400 in the UK) all enjoying running their own jewelry business - like me! I have been wearing Miglio jewellery for nine years and am absolutely in love with it so, I became an independent consultant for the company in April this year. I hold parties at peoples homes and they invite their friends to come and browse, and hopefully, buy! I also have a stall at some of the larger compound coffee mornings. Can you explain how you arrived at the decision to sell jewellery as an independent consultant like this? Miglio has a distinct look about it; its very striking and unique. It is designed in a way that allows you to make your own statement; each item can be altered to create a completely different look. At every coffee morning or party I have attended, people (even strangers!) would compliment my Miglio jewellery and ask where it was from. So I realised that even with the abundance of jewellery available in Riyadh ladies are still on the lookout for something totally different and unique. And I decided to become a consultant so I could share this beautiful, versatile jewellery with the lovely people of Riyadh. What challenges have you faced? Postage! A parcel can arrive in as little as 5 days, but if (and when) it gets stuck with customs, it can take up to two weeks and then I have to pay a hefty customs fee. Travelling to house parties and coffee mornings is also very challenging. Drivers have been very late picking me up and have forgotten about me at venues! The biggest challenge is the product catalogues; they are beautiful, high quality and indispensible when youre a consultant, but it is very expensive (and risky) to get them over here. The catalogues are printed in South Africa and in the UK so the models in the photographs are often wearing revealing western clothes. Apart from the possibility of it being confiscated at customs, I also dont want to offend people here with the pictures. So I decided to print my own mini catalogues, but the process was slow and stressful with language barriers and quality issues.

Whats your opinion on taking risks, have you taken many to become a Miglio consultant? Being in love with a product can often cloud your judgment! I wasnt sure whether anybody would buy the jewellery, so the advice I got from my recruiter was, Just buy everything YOU love. If nobody buys from you, at least youll have jewellery for life! I liked that approach and thats exactly what I did. The mini catalogues Ive printed were a great risk. Miglios standards are very high and, with hindsight, I should have discussed the issue with the head office.

After meeting with the creative director and CEO, Jenny Miller, she affirmed that a consultants job is to sell jewellery and I should leave it to head office to sort out the catalogues. Im excited that very soon a special catalogue for the Middle East will be issued: they will be shorter and will show only modestly-dressed models showcasing the jewellery. How do you normally reach people with advertising or information? Most of this is done by word of mouth or through the actual house parties and of course wearing the jewellery at every possible event for people to see. I have also set up a Facebook page where I can run promotions. Have you got any tips for ladies who might like the idea of holding a jewellery party, but are worried about inviting enough people to make it worthwhile? The beauty of a Miglio house party is that it is just that a party! The focus must be on the fact that it is a social gathering. We ladies are always busy and putting others before ourselves. I always suggest to my hostesses that they invite their friends to a breakfast, a brunch, a lunch or an afternoon tea just to get together and relax, with the added bonus of showcasing some unique and high quality jewellery, at affordable prices. There is never any obligation to buy whatsoever. What are your business plans for the future? To meet new ladies who are willing to host a party. I am quite shy and socializing doesnt come easy to me, but with Miglio theres always a conversation starter.

Have you got any advice for those who are thinking of setting up their own business? Miglio has opened so many doors for me by boosting my confidence. I know this sounds corny, but like Ive mentioned, Im quite shy and working with such a fabulous product has really opened up a new world for me. Before I always dreaded social gatherings, now I cant wait for the next party. By doing something you love and are passionate about (and of course doing all the required training) you dont have to worry about yourself. When youre passionate about a product you cant help but share your love for it and before you know it youve made a new friend or discovered mutual interests. Sometimes, you just need to get out of your comfort zone and chase a dream. Sometimes, your dream might not happen but just by stepping out youll soon discover a multitude of dreams that are waiting to happen! If youd like to host a Miglio jewellery party, please contact Sunette Goosen at sunette.g@me.com If you like Sunettes Facebook page and invite friends to like it too, you receive a special discount off your next purchase. www.facebook.com/MiglioRiyadh

New Riyadh Playgroup - Fun for Parents and Kids

Written by Penny Nettlefold The Riyadh Playgroup is not a preschool or childcare service, but is intended for parents (or other relatives) to play with their children in a friendly setting. Therefore, it is not for unaccompanied nannies, or a place to drop your child off. The Playgroup meets in members homes every Wednesday from 10am - 12pm. All members will take turns hosting the Playgroup, and members can expect to host the Playgroup about once every three months or so. A new weekly playgroup has started in Riyadh. The Riyadh Playgroup is an informal gathering where mums, dads, grandparents, children and babies can meet and play together in a relaxed environment. Currently, the group is comprised of all expat mums, but locals and dads are welcome too! The group is especially valuable to the expat mums as we tend to be in Saudi without the support of family and a long way from old friends. This can cause all us mums to get frustrated at times with life here in Riyadh. Since we cant drive, we spend a lot more time in our homes than we normally would, which is pretty non-stimulating for both mother and child. The Playgroup offers a great chance to get out of the house, and to chat about our experiences both as both parents and as Saudi residents. Our children and babies love playing with new toys and being surrounded by lots of other noisy, playful children. For more information please email pennynettlefold@gmail.com, call 0549 43 4646, or search for Penny Nettlefold on Facebook to join the Facebook Group.

Do you have a special skill? Would you like to meet new people?
The WSB is seeking women volunteers to help with various projects. Whether leading one of our workshops, writing for our monthly magazine, or helping spread the word at coffee mornings there is an opportunity for everyone who would like to assist us.

Lusin
Address: Cuisine: Suit: Style: Cost: Hours: Centra Mall corner Olaya and Tahlia Street Armenian Cuisine Families, Groups and Couples Elegant and stylish Light Lunch for two, SAR 150 Every Day 1300 midnight Saturday Breakfast: 0930 - 1200

It was lunch on a weekend and there must have been at least 25 people queuing - always a good sign. However, next time we shall make a reservation, but the service was slick and we were soon seated. The designer-elegant exterior included a glass preview of their wood fire oven. Muted tones and textured surfaces warmed by copper hanging lights created an enticing and inviting environment. Armenian cuisine sits comfortably within the Middle East region. Freshness and quality of the ingredients with a subtle use of spices gives a unique style. Personally, I love their use of nuts, wheat and fruit - in particular pomegranates. Complimentary bread with a scrumptious cheese and herb dipping sauce foretold of delights to come. The menu is outstanding and there was so many oh yum choices!!!!!! It was hard to decide. But it was lunch, so we choose light and ordered the Armenian Salad followed by the beetroot salad and my personal favourite, the goat cheese salad which was outstanding; in fact thinking about it still makes my mouth water. Looking around, I saw many dishes on other tables that could have been my new favourite. The staff were attentive; service was quick, but not hasty and the Manager engaged the diners making sure they were happy and well fed.

Out of Mall Retail Review

Saco
Address: Suit: Hours: Main store is on south side of Northern Ring Road, just West of Exit 5 Hardware enthusiasts, ideal for new home needs and will satisfy gardeners Sat to Thu 0830 - 1400 1600 - 2300 Fri 1600 - 2300

You will recognize the various stores by their clear signage and branding of a circle with a house inside. There are many stories throughout Riyadh; see their website for directions and opening hours. Sacos extensive range of goods and products has over 40,000 items which include:
Automotive Bed & Bath Building Material Electrical & Power Supplies Electrical Appliances Furniture Hardware Houseware Lawn & Garden Lighting Outdoor Living Paint & Sundries Plumbing Supplies & Fixtures Sports & Accessories Storage & Organization

I am certainly not a handy woman, but do quite like visiting as they have lots of interesting things that can make living easier or brighten up a home or garden. My husband has a lovely time exploring all the boy toys and gadgets. Prices are reasonable and, generally, it is easy to find what you are looking for as similar products are located in the same place. The aisles are wide enough for a trolley and staff are happy to assist with that particular hard to find item. Different stores stock limited choices depending on available footprint, but the product displays are more or less the same.
