y dog Hulk was
born in April 1999
and strolled into
our arms when he
was a month old. He was
trained in his manners
and at the same time thor-
oughly spoiled by me.
One winter night, the
night my husband was re-
turning from his usual
flight, Hulk proved his
love and loyalty. I was
watching the television till
about 1.15 a.m. and then
went to bed. Twenty min-
utes later, Hulk was bark-
ing furiously and was on
top of me looking into my
eyes and then looking to-
wards the door. I kept ask-
ing him: ‘What is it, baby?’
He ran to the door bark-
ing, and then back to me. I
sensed danger and went to
the kitchen for a knife. I
went close to the door and
to my horror, I smelt alco-
hol. It was an intruder.
With trembling hands, I
called my neighbour. He
told me to come to the
front balcony and I threw
the house keys to him. He
was up in a jiffy, opened
my door and Hulk ran to
the terrace.
The intruder was smart
to latch the terrace door
while escaping hence we
could not gain entry to the
terrace. We had to keep
banging and kicking the
door, only then the latch
let go.
Once on the terrace,
Hulk ran to one end and
we realised that the in-
truder had scaled the pipe
and escaped.
On two other occasions,
Hulk came to the rescue of
my family by alerting us
about intruders who often
tried to break in at night
when my husband was out
of town.
Dogs are like children
who want to be loved and
cared for; you can see af-
fection on their faces. On
July 12th, Hulk was laid to
rest due to Degenerative
Myelopathy, a chronic dis-
ease that German Shep-
herds are predisposed to.
We all loved him very
much and thank God for
sending us his guardian
angel in the form of a dog.
We are grateful to man’s
best friend, who asked for
nothing but gave us his all.

clear skin

Cleansing, moisturising blended with regular exercise and right
intake of food are the mantra for an ever charming face

f pampering your face with
face packs, creams and toners
have not helped or improved
your skin texture, then its time
to ponder on a serious note. Ac-
cording to skin specialists the first
step is to identify the type of skin.
K. Veena of Naturals says, “Apply-
ing lotions and moisturisers with-
out proper knowledge of the skin
type will mar the skin.”
Read on to know your skin type,
how to apply cleansers and the
role of food:
Identify your skin type
Clean the skin with the help of a
mild cleanser followed by a toner.
Pat it dry with cotton or a soft tow-
el and notice the pores on the skin.
If the pores are small, then it is
normal to dry skin. If the pores are
enlarged, then your skin is of dry
to oily. If you find a combination
of small and large pores, then you
skin is of the third type, oily to
combination.
Cleansing
Immaterial of your skin type,
washing your face at least thrice a
day – morning, noon and night
with lukewarm water is a must.
However, Veena cautions, “Avoid
washing your face very often since
over cleansing would reduce the
natural moisture of the skin and
make it dry.” Every night make
sure you remove traces of make up
with cleansing milk otherwise that
may clog pores and can lead to un-
wanted breakouts.
How to do
Splash lukewarm water on your
face. Take a few drops of face wash
and mix it with equal amount of
water in your palm. Apply it all
over the face in an upward circular
movement except around the eye,
and wash it off with lots of water.
After every face wash pamper your
skin with a fine line of moisturiser.
Application of scrubs once in a
fortnight helps to remove the dead
skins.
Types of cleansers
For oily skin : Oil-free, water-
based cleansers.
For normal skin: Wash with
cleansers that contain glycerine.
For dry skin: Soap free and mild
cleansers
Moisturisers
Moisturisers make your skin feel
supple and are required for all
types of skin. Make sure to apply a
moisturiser all over your body af-
ter a bath. For people with dry
skin, normal moisturiser will do,
whereas for oily and combination
skin, gel-based moisturisers are
ideal.
Usage of sunscreen
Sunscreen is a must and prob-
ably the most important step
when it comes to protecting the
skin from harmful environmental
factors. Make certain to use a sun-

Writer publishes novel on Twitter

n American writer who
failed to find a publisher
for his novel is putting the
book on Twitter - 140
characters at a time.
Matt Stewart, a San Francisco-
based novelist, began “tweeting”
his first book, The French Revo-
lution, on the micro-blogging
service.
“As far as I can tell, I’m the first
person to release a completed
full-length literary novel on
Twitter,” Stewart wrote on his
website, thefrenchrev.com.
“Loosely structured on the
greatest identity crisis ever, The
French Revolution tells the story
of a San Francisco family forging
its place in history,” he said.
Stewart said putting the book
on Twitter was a “social experi-
ment” to “see how the world re-
acts to a long-form tale told in
snippets.”
He also acknowledged that he
had been unable to find a pub-
lisher.
“My agent submitted The
French Revolution to all the ma-
jor publishing houses,” Stewart
said.
“Many of them loved it, but
none were willing to buy what
they viewed as a ’risky’ novel -
vivid language, elements of fan-
tasy and farce, raunchy hu-
mour,” he said.
Stewart said it would take ap-
proximately 3,700 “tweets” to
transmit all of the 480,000 char-
acters in his book.
Stewart also said he is already
at work on his next novel, Duct

drated Jamie Neale, 19, was
discovered by chance by two

Mountains west of Sydney,

gan when he set off for a lone
trek on July 3.

soon hit the shelves in the U.K. markets. Jacko had planned to launch his own

Bachchan. That’s what happened
to a few women here recently.
Big B did his bit by giving lifts to a
few women in his car to help them es-
cape the Mumbai rains that have
jammed life in India’s financial capital
for the last three days. The road out-
side Amitabh’s house Prateeksha is
waist deep in water, which has en-
tered his reception area too. When
the actor decided to take a ride in his
SUV to his second home Jalsa in Juhu,
he found the women wading
through the waterlogged street.
“I muster up courage and help and
pull out the SUV...that’s the only one
that shall go through in all this mess,
and float out into the streets now
jammed with people wading through
and the cars blocking any movement.
“I open the door, well just about, to
assist a few young ladies in distress
who were beginning to lose their
composure, and give them a ride to-
wards Jalsa. Everywhere there is just
chaos,” Amitabh posted in a recent
entry on his blog www.bigb.bigadda-
.com .

The ‘Harry Potter’ film series seems set to topple James Bond movies as top-
grossing franchise in box office history.
The last five Harry Potter films are said to have raked in a total of 4.48 dollars
billion around the globe, while the James Bond movies stand at five billion
dollars over the course of 22 films.
According to Variety.com, the Harry Potter series is expected to overtake the
British spy thrillers by the end of this month, after the latest film in the former
series hits the theatres on July 15, reports the New York Daily News.
Rick Butler, the Chief Operating Officer of Fandango, said: “It’s our fastest
ticket-seller since The Dark Knight, and Harry may eventually outpace Batman in
advance ticket sales.”

more distress to the actor.
“At Jalsa, the water in the be-

The situation became so chaotic
that the actor had to ask son Abhish-
ek and daughter-in-law Aishwarya

for a while.
“I quickly inform them of the del-
uge warning them not to come in to-
day as scheduled. I put all the mobiles
on charge and the walkie talkies. Fill
up water in buckets from the rain out-
side and store it just in case the power
goes and the pumps get disconnect-
ed. And wait, and wait and wait…,”
he said.
For many others living here, the sit-
uation has been just as grave ever
since rain started causing water log-
ging in many areas, traffic snarls and
even affecting rail service -- paralys-
ing life in Mumbai. ■
