Objective
To construct a 24-hours Digital Clock using components like 7490, 7447 and some other simple gates. The circuit will include some functionality like setting the clock to desired time.
Required Parts
Serial No. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 Description 7490 7447 Resistor PACK of 8, 220 Ohm SWITCH / Push Button 7-segment LED Display Function generator at 1Hz Power Supply AND gate (7408) Quantity 6 each 6 each 6 each 2 each 6 each 1 each 1 each 1 each
Theory

The 7490 is used to count from 0 to 9. It can also count from 0 to 6. It will count from 0-9 and 0-6 for minutes and seconds. For the hours the counters should be reset when it reaches 24. The 7447 is used to decode the BCD output from 7490 to be displayed on 7-segment LED. The 7490 counters will be chained to gather and every one act in this sense as clock input to the next one. Notes: To create a divide-by-10 counter, pin 12 was connected to pin 1 and pins 2, 3, 6, and 7 are grounded. The output on pin 11 to will be connected to the next stage. To create a divide-by-6 counter pin 12 was connected to pin 1 and pins 6 and 7 were connected to ground. Pin 2 connected to pin 9 and pin 3 connected to pin 8. The output on pin 8 will be connected to the next stage.
Procedure
1. FGN (Function Generator) was connected to 7490 to produce CLK input. 2. The 7490 for seconds 1st digit counter is configured to count from 0-9 only. 3. The output from second's first digit is used as clock input to the seconds 2nd digit and set to count from 0-6 only. 4. The Steps above were used to make the counting for minutes 1st and 2nd digits. 5. Output from minutes was passed as clock input for the hours 1st digit. 6. The hour's first digit is set to count from 0-9, and the 2nd digit is set to count from 0-6. Then using AND gate to reset the hours 1st and 2nd digit when they reach 24. 7. Two push buttons were used to set the minutes and hours to desired time. The button is used to pass a higher clocking to the counter instead of the output from the previous counter.

7490 Decade Counter showed excellent performance in making the 24 hour digital clock. In most modern clocks and watches, all of the functions of the clock (including the alarm and any other features) are all integrated into one low-power chip (in a watch, the chip and display together consume only about a millionth of a watt). That chip is probably embedded directly into the circuit board. You might be able to see a blob of black plastic protecting this chip. That one tiny chip contains all of the components we have discussed here.
