Englisch stirbt aus! Und das, obwohl immer
mehr Menschen Englisch sprechen. Allerdings
Muttersprache. So sprechen Experten heute
schon von Chinglish, Japlish oder Franglais
(siehe Business in engine 1/2008).
Was
so alles passieren kann, wenn diese Sprache
aufgeweicht wird, zeigt sehr schn ein aktuelles
Beispiel aus dem wohl wieder aufackernden
Browserkrieg zwischen Internet Explorer und
diesmal Google Chrome. Die gemeinsame
Sprache des Internets sind die vom World Wide
Web Consortium (W3C) festgelegten Stan-
dards.
die meisten unterwegs waren, wusste ja was
gemeint war. Ganz so wie beim Chinglish.
Die dadurch aber verursachte Sprachverwir-
rung betraf damals nur ein paar wenige. Doch
kommenden Internet Explorer 8 wieder zurck
einmal Googlish lernen mssen.
P.S.: Nach so viel Chinish, Japlish und Googlish
wieder zurck zum guten, alten Englisch. Damit
Sie Ihren Standard nicht ganz vergessen, haben
wir Ihnen wieder ein Heft zusammen gestellt,
das es selbst mit der spannendsten Richtlinie
noch aufnehmen kann: Diesmal iegen wir
zurck zum Mond, falten Airbags und andere
Dinge, panzen High-Tech Gemse, drcken
Kohlendioxid weg, gehen mit den Wikingern
auf Reise und schauen ein paar alte Videos. Viel
Vergngen mit diesem Heft.

Cant hold a candle to something =
to be far less competent/efcient
Before electric lights, someone working in
the dark needed a helper to hold a candle
to provide light. Holding the candle is of
course the less challenging role. So, someone
who is not even t to hold a candle is consid-
ered to be of very low level.

Flight times like these are still dreams of the future, but a team at Reac-
tion Engines is working on the basic concepts to make this dream come
true. To reach the necessary speed of Mach 5, a passenger aircraft has to
undergo a radical redesign.
The proposed windowless, rocket-like A2 aircraft will be 139 metres
long and carry 300 passengers over a distance of 20,000 kilometres.
Since the specic caloric energy of hydrocarbon fuels, i.e. Kerosene,
is too low, the A2 will be fuelled with liquid hydrogen. The Scimitar
engines are hybrids between airbreathing and rocket engines and de-
signed around existing gas turbine, rocket and subsonic ramjet technol-
ogy. Maybe one day the Concorde will have a worthy successor.

Where Sails Cant Hold a Candle to Rotors
When a large manufacturer of wind power plants builds his own vessel
to transport rotor blades to their oversea locations, it has to be some-
thing special. For their E-Ship 1, Enercon has revived an old idea and
translated it into the 21
st
century: the Flettner rotor.
In 1920, Anton Flettner built a boat with two rotating cylinders in-
stead of sails (see engine 1/2006). As a driving force the Buckau relied
on the Magnus effect, the strong uplift of a rotating cylinder moving
through air. So does the E-Ship 1. Four large sailing rotors 25 metres
tall, rotating metal cylinders will support the conventional main
engines and reduce fuel consumption considerately. The vessel has
already been launched and will begin trial runs in 2009. www.enercon.de

Van Gogh behind the Grass
A new technique has made it possible for
pictures which were later painted over to be
revealed once more. An international research
team has successfully applied this technique
for the rst time to the painting Patch of Grass
by Vincent van Gogh and found a portrait of a
woman behind the painting.
The new technique is based on synchrotron
radiation induced X-ray uorescence spectros-
copy. The painting is subjected to an X-ray bundle
from a synchrotron radiation source, and the
uorescence of the layers of paint is measured.
This technique has the major advantage that
the measured uorescence is specic to each
chemical element. In particular the combination
of the distribution of the elements mercury and
antimony from specic paint pigments provided
a colour photo of the portrait which had been
painted over.

Wind Turbines Drop Anchor
Offshore wind parks are nothing new. About 15 years ago, the rst wind
power plants appeared out at sea. Unfortunately, anchoring the turbine
on the sea oor is very expensive and limited to shallow waters. Also the
winds near the coast are not as strong and consistent as at high sea.
To compensate these disadvantages, engineers from Siemens and Statoil
Hydro joined to built a oating wind turbine. Instead of securing the
windmill to the sea oor with a gigantic pylon, the power plant will be
stabilized by a special otation buoy equipped with an anchor. The buoy
for the windmill, which is 120 meters long and made of steel, concrete
and ballast tanks, is designed to pull the entire structure to a depth suf-
cient to shift its centre of gravity far below the surface. This will prevent
the wind turbine from swaying in rough seas. To ensure that the windmill
doesnt drift away, it is anchored to the sea oor by three exible steel
cables. The power it generates will be sent ashore via an undersea cable.

Inated Jellysh
The ying movements of the jellysh are among the most elegant
nature has come up with. With air being their element, the engineers at
Festo decided to imitate these movements and create a ying jellysh.
The remote-controlled Air-Jelly is kept in the air by its helium-lled
ballonet. A central electric drive transmits its power to a bevel gear and
then to eight spur gears, which drive the eight tentacles of the jellysh via
their respective cranks. The jellysh glides gently through the air thanks
to a new drive concept based on the reaction thrust principle. Using such
a peristaltic movement to drive a balloon was previously unknown in
the history of aviation. The Air-Jelly steers by shifting its weight and the
propulsive force of the drive can be varied by moving the tentacles more
quickly or slowly. www.festo.com/cms/de_de/5890.htm

People
Key Ingredient
for Success
In our high-tech world, the human factor is becoming increasingly important in achieving
success. But how can companies identify, attract, and foster talent? Professor Fredmund
Malik, founder and head of Malik Management Zentrum St. Gallen offers his answers.
So paradox es klin-

Hightech-Welt wird

Talente? Antworten

sor Fredmund Malik.
Interview
Professor Malik, human capital is considered
one of the main intangible assets in the corpo-
rate and nancial world. What is your opinion
of the term human capital?
Financial analysts often think in terms of crite-
ria like shareholder value, tangible assets, and cash
ow. From this perspective they see employees
as human capital or intangible assets. To
those who refer to employees as intangible,
however, I would contend that the knowledge
workers in our organization are certainly very
tangible when they walk into my ofce.
Youve also said that there are too few good
managers out there. However, isnt this much
more due to a lack of skilled employees that
there are more generals than foot soldiers?
The main problem is the effectiveness of the
entire management system. A true professional
can manage twice as many employees as an
average manager. Of course, there cant be more
generals than foot soldiers. At the same time, in
every employee in the knowledge industry lies
a potential project or program manager; they
have to be able to manage and motivate them-
selves to a large extent. So they have to be both a
general and a foot soldier in one.
Is the HR department still the right place for
processes like nding talent?
It depends. If youre talking about administra-
tion, the traditional HR department still has the
same role to play. Strategic tasks like nding
and maintaining talent, buying knowledge, and
recruiting, however, all belong in a separate
department. At the most successful companies,
these functions have already been separated or
are drifting apart.
To increase its competence, a company can
either acquire talent or develop it internally.
Is there an ideal balance between the two, or
does it depend on the situation in question?
Executive search should account for between
one-fth and one-fourth of such efforts. In
emergencies, you have to take whoever you can
get, of course, but the result is usually less than
ideal. Acquired managers are sometimes able to
master such situations, but generally speaking,
its very difcult for both the company and the
manager in question even if he or she is from
the same industry. Its a question of credibility:
Can a dyed-in-the-wool Daimler manager win
over employees at BMW? Ultimately, it de-
pends on what youre looking for. If you want
to modify or completely overhaul your business
model, bringing in someone from outside the
company is actually a good idea. On the other
hand, companies who want to enhance their
existing model should rely on the key skills of
their own people.
You mentioned self-management as one of the
most important skills high-potentials have.
How else are these employees special?
Of all the top people Ive dealt with over the
years, no two have been similar. Each is his or
her own person, and you have to accept it. The
fact that they are different is usually the reason
why such people make it to the top. Imitators
are rarely successful. What the most talented
people do have in common, however, is that
they all learned to motivate themselves at an
early stage. They take things on with a sense of
responsibility sometimes bordering on obses-
sion. This has less to do with competition as with
proving to themselves that theyre up to the
task. As in the case of luminaries in other profes-
sions, top managers have often dealt with crisis
or defeat early on in life. Surviving existential
dilemmas and emerging from them stronger is a
very formative experience. Thats why experi-

potential employees have had, but also about
their greatest failure and how they have dealt
with it.
You see most managers greatest failure in
their apparent inability to treat their trainees
as individuals. Is this even possible in a mod-
ern multinational company?
Yes, it is possible. After all, managers only
manage the employees directly under them, not
the whole company. Even in the case of execu-
tive board members, thats two dozen people at
most. If you dont even know their names, its
obviously harder to interact with them as peo-
ple. Good company directors understand that
people are more than a statistic. You can only
build on someones strengths, and that is what
companies need to nd out. That, incidentally,
is a way to compensate for a lack of personnel:

Dieses Jahr feiert
die NASA ihren
50. Geburtstag.
Die altehrwrdige
Organisation hat
jngst beschlossen,
wieder zum Mond
zurck zu kehren.
Lsst sich der Ruhm
vergangener Tage
wieder beleben?
No engineering enterprise since the con-
struction of the Hoover Dam in the 1930s
better exemplied Americas hopes for the
future than NASA at the dawn of the Space
Age. Signed into law on 29 July, 1958 as
a response to Russias launch of Sputnik
ten months earlier, it symbolised the 20th
century technological dream at its most self-
assured: spending vast sums of taxpayers
money on engineering and science in order
to improve education, stimulate agging
industries and redene the management
structures and beliefs of large-scale organisa-
tions across the country.
NASAs vision for its crowning achieve-
ment, the 1960s Apollo lunar landing project,
was not just directed at winning triumphs in
space. The genuinely innovative techniques
in systems engineering, personnel manage-
ment and information control pioneered
by the Agency were supposed to serve as a
model for social change on the ground too.
According to the Smithsonian Institutions
chief space historian Roger Launius: NASA
thought it was possible to create the perfect
organisation. They talked about the appli-
cation of their techniques to other sorts of
activities such as homelessness and poverty,
welfare and education. One of the reasons
we feel so nostalgic for the days of Apollo is
our sense that they could do things better
in those days.
Reducing Risks
However, in January 1986, space shut-
tle Challenger exploded in mid-air shortly
after launch, denting forever our acceptance
that NASA knows how to run the perfect
organisation. The loss of a second shuttle,
Columbia, during re-entry in February 2003
highlighted that the entire US space pro-
gramme needed to renew its sense of purpose
after years of post-Apollo neglect. The White
House responded with surprising vigour to
Columbias loss. On 14 January 2004, Presi-
dent George W. Bush made a televised speech
during a special visit to NASA headquarters
in Washington. The priority, he said, was to
return the shuttle system to ight status and
nish construction of the International Space
Station. No surprises there, but as his speech
continued, a radical alternative vision emerged
for Americas future in space.
From then on, NASAs principal task
would be to undertake extended human
missions to the Moon, with the goal of liv-
ing and working there. With the experience
and knowledge gained on the Moon, we will
then be ready to take the next steps of space
exploration: human missions to Mars and to
worlds beyond. The ageing space shuttle
system will be retired from ight in the year
2010, and a new spacecraft, the Crew Explo-
ration Vehicle (CEV), known as Orion, will
take centre stage. !
Forty years after Apollo,
one rocket has become
two. In the Constellation
programme, the smaller
Ares I rocket will carry
the crew into orbit and
the much larger unmanned
Ares V will carry heavy
loads, e. g. a lunar lander.

In terms of manned space ight at least,
Orion is a reversal of everything that NASA
has worked towards over the last 25 years.
The dream of an all-purpose winged space
shuttle, ying cheaply and reliably like a
commercial cargo plane, never quite came to
fruition. Whenever a shuttle carries a satellite
or a space station module in its cargo bay, the
costs of launching those payloads are exagger-
ated because astronauts always come along for
the ride. Quite apart from the massive addi-
tional complications of life support, the launch
weight given up to the crew cabin and the
shuttles heavy wings has to be subtracted
from the cargo capacity.
Back to the Future
It is more efcient, say Orions designers at
the Lockheed Martin company, to lift cargo
in unmanned rockets, and launch astronauts
separately in a small module that carries peo-
ple and nothing else. There is no need for the
shuttle unless the intention is to return large
payloads to Earth. So, with the Orion concept,
all that remains is the human-carrying ele-
ment: a small conical crew cabin at the front of
the launch stack.
Despite the unwelcome evidence of two
disasters, there has never been anything
uniquely hazardous about the shuttle. Dr
John Logsdon, director of George Wash-
ington Universitys Space Policy Institute,
served on the Columbia Accident Investiga-
tion Board (CAIB). Naturally, we had an
emphasis on investigating the specic prob-
lems that doomed Columbia, but space vehi-
cles are risky across the board, and they need
constant vigilance to be own successfully.
Lunar landing revisited: Although the new lunar module called
Altair (right) looks quite different from the iconic original
Lunar Module (above), the basic principles are the same: The
craft has two stages, of which only the smaller upper stage
will return to the orbiting Crew Exploration Vehicle. But
unlike Apollos LM, the much larger Altair is also capable
of landing at the polar regions of the Moon. It can carry four
astronauts to the surface and support them for weeks.
That said, NASA is eliminating certain risks
identied by the CAIB.
At launch, the shuttle is attached to the
ank of its huge external fuel tank, in what
is known as a parallel stack. Columbia was
destroyed because a suitcase-sized piece of
thermal insulation foam peeled off the exter-
nal fuel tank shortly after launch and hit the
left wings leading edge, making a small but
ultimately catastrophic hole. During Co-
lumbias re-entry two weeks later, hot gases
rushed into that hole, destroying internal
controls and melting the underlying metal
airframe. Orion will revert to the 1960s para-
digm, with the capsule at the very top of the
launch vehicle: an in-line arrangement that
prevents stray debris, such as loose insula-
tion foam or ice peeling away from the cold
anks of the liquid oxygen and liquid hydro-
gen fuel tanks, from endangering the crew.
Many kinds of failure can occur during a
rocket launch. Orions crew compartment will
be a discreet cone-shaped capsule at the tip
of the stack that can serve as an escape pod in
the event of mid-ight explosions or control
problems in the main booster assembly. The
shuttle has no such distinction between its
crew compartment and the rest of the launch
vehicle. The winged orbiter has three liquid-
fuelled engines that share the thrust load
with the rest of the launch stack, drawing
fuel from the external tank.
This has always been a concern to Apollo
veterans, used to the idea of a complete
structural separation between the crew

capsule and the tank and propulsion systems.
The CAIB noted that when the Moon-bound
Apollo 13 spacecraft suffered an oxygen
tank explosion in April 1970, the command
module at the front of the vehicle, though
drained of power, was undamaged and even-
tually made a safe return to Earth.
Robert Seamans, NASAs deputy adminis-
trator in the Apollo era, was one of a dozen

carried to orbit, unmanned, aboard a heavy-lift
rocket. Then the Orion and its crew will locate
it in Earth orbit, make a docking and head to
the moon. On arrival, Altair will detach and
drop down to the lunar surface. At the end of its
surface mission, the lower part of the Altair will
stay behind while the upper crew module blasts
back into lunar orbit, makes a rendezvous with
Orion and transfers its crew. Then Orion heads
back to Earth for an Apollo-style re-entry and
recovery by parachute.
Is this forward progress? Or a weird leap back
in time? Robert Zubrin, formerly a senior engi-
neer at Lockheed Martin and now a respected
full-time lobbyist for human Mars missions, is
not sure. In the 1970s, when President Nixon
closed down the Apollo program and ended
lunar exploration, NASA said we would do
all that again one day, after we had developed
cheaper transportation to orbit using a winged
shuttle. Weve spent 30 years trying that, with
mixed results. The shuttle costs more to y
than the Saturn V boosters that we had for the
Moon missions. Now the shuttle is going to
be replaced with a capsule just like Apollo.
The back to the future technology for Orion is
shaping up fast, but there is no guarantee that it
wont be cancelled before it reaches the Moon.
NASA marks its many astonishing achieve-
ments over the last half-century with budgetary
doubts clouding its future. John Logsdon warns
that everything could change when the Bush
presidency comes to an end. If the current
proposals for human space exploration fail politi-
cally, then major programmes that depend on
government spending could lose momentum.
Its far from certain that were going back to the
Moon, let alone on to Mars. I think we are still
struggling to answer the most basic question:
why is the government in the business of send-
ing people into space? "

Folding Science
What do Origami, the ancient Japanese art of paper folding, and
engineering have in common? A lot, thinks Robert J. Lang, who folds
science and art together to create 3-D paper wonders.
Was haben Origami,
die alte japanische
Kunst des Papier-
faltens, und die
Ingenieurskunst
gemeinsam? Jede
Menge, meint
Robert J. Lang, der
mit wissenschaft-
lichen Methoden
und Kunstfertigkeit

faltet.
Origami
Alle Bilder: Lang
The Japanese have a reputation for being an
isolationist people, ercely protective of their
own culture. After all, the countrys borders
were once closed to outsiders for more than
200 years. So, how did the Japanese react
when it turned out that one of the foremost
origami artists in the world is an American
engineer named Robert J. Lang? Actually,
they welcomed him with open arms.
In 1992, Lang visited Japan to give a lecture
to the Nippon Origami Association. People
were so taken with him that a few months
later, he was invited back to appear on a
Japanese game show. They thought it was
so weird and cool that a westerner should
be doing this complicated origami, says the
46-year-old Alamo resident, a tall, lean man
with a greying beard.
The word complicated may not do justice
to Langs work. His designs include a de-
tailed allosaurus skeleton, a pteranodon with
a 14-foot wingspan, a praying mantis devour-
ing its mate, a Viking ship complete with oars,
and a cuckoo clock with moving parts each
made from a single sheet of paper. The paper
sculptures can require hundreds of folds (490
for the praying mantises) and several days
to complete, and often feature many thin ap-
pendages an obstacle to design once thought
insurmountable. Lang solved the problem
using a revolutionary perimeter-maximizing
technique he calls circle packing.
Any Size and any Shape
The most surprising thing is that the
perimeter of a gure can be as big as you
want, Lang explains. He holds up a sheet of
notebook paper. From a sheet of paper this
size, I could fold a shape whose perimeter is
50,000 miles. By using circle packing, I can
create a little star shape that would have
millions and millions of points. This folded
shape would be microscopically small, but
if you traced the outside, the length of every
star, you could get any number you want-
ed.
His work is so intricate, it just blows
me away, says Linda Tomoko Mihara,
A Roosevelt Elk and its
crease pattern (back-
ground). The lines of the
pattern mark the position
and direction of the folds.
The circles stand for the
legs and other extremities.

an award-winning origami artist who has
worked with Lang. He would never admit
that hes the best in the world, but I consider
him to be the best in the world.
Lang, who grew up in Atlanta, began his
journey toward artistic greatness at age six,
when he was given his rst origami book.
As a kid, the attraction was nothing deep
or sophisticated, he says. Here was a way
I could make toys. And, I could make them
from free scrap paper.
He designed his rst piece at around the
age of 10 a variation on the classic origami
boat, which he folded to resemble the PT boats
from the television show McHales Navy. By
the time he was in his teens, he was devour-
ing origami books and modifying the designs
to create all sorts of animals of his own.
Lang continued to fold paper while he
attended college at Caltech, where he majored
in electrical engineering. He did origami
as a way to relieve stress, but at the same
time found that his studies in science and
mathematics helped him develop more
systematic ways of creating new designs a
perfect dovetailing of his scientic and artistic
pursuits.
Aesthetics Meets Science
The connections to art are obvious, he says.
Youre creating objects that are intended
to appeal aesthetically to someone, either
the viewer or the practitioner. But, science
is dependent very strongly on patterns and
natural laws and relationships. My view is
if one understands the patterns and the rela-
tionships together with the scientic aspects,
it enables you to enhance the art that youre
ultimately doing.
He went on to study at Stanford and then
returned to Caltech to get a Ph.D. in applied
physics, studying lasers. In grad school, he
wrote his rst book, The Complete Book of
Origami, published in 1988.
Lang wrote ve more books contain-
ing origami patterns he refers to them as
recipe books on evenings and weekends
while working in Silicon Valley. He has also
been awarded more than 40 patents, many in-
volving his work with lasers. What he really
wanted to write, however, was a book that
would explain how people could create their
own origami designs.
I always wanted to explain how to design
things, and I realized that I would not write
Origami Design Secrets unless I could devote
myself full-time to writing it, he says. !

With that in mind, he quit his job at a San
Jose laser manufacturing company in 2001.
The book was published in 2003. Lang has
focused on origami full-time ever since.
He has a constant ow of commissions, both
public and private (people pay as much as
$2,500 for his more complex sculptures),
thanks in part to widely read features in The
New Yorker and Smithsonian. Art museums
all across the world have put his work on
display. The Indianapolis Museum of Art is
currently showing 34 of Langs pieces, his
largest exhibit to date.
Like any artist, he draws much of his
inspiration from his environment. The idea for
one particularly impressive piece, a colourful
Annas hummingbird feeding at a honeysuckle
ower, came to him while he watched hum-
mingbirds at a feeder hanging just outside the
window of his studio. One of his favourite
recent designs, a barn owl sitting on its perch,
was born after a visit to a wildlife centre in
England, where he had the opportunity to
feed an owl as it perched on his arm.
Inspired by Nature
Its just so emotionally powerful to see one
of these incredible animals right up close,
Lang says. After that encounter, I said, I
have to re-create that moment, that emo-
tion, in an origami gure. Most of what I do
is real wildlife because thats what inspires
me.
Lang spends as much as 12 hours a day in
his studio, behind the ranch-style home he
shares with his wife, Diane, a fellow animal
lover who volunteers at the Lindsay Wild-
life Museum, and his son, Peter, a senior in
high school. Origami sculptures are scattered
throughout the studio some could t in
a matchbox. Others, like a heron that hangs
from the ceiling, approach life-size. Lang
skips about the ofce, exuding the energy of
an enthusiastic college professor: Sometimes
hes sketching a design with pencil and paper;
sometimes hes at his Mac, creating a design
using a computer program he wrote; some-
times hes folding at a table, or on the oor if
a piece requires a large sheet of paper.
Lang enjoys sharing his knowledge with
others so they can use his techniques to
improve their designs. Perhaps the best story
comes from his stint as an artist in residence
at MIT in 2004, where he taught a workshop
on circle packing. Less than a year later, at the
Origami USA convention in New York, Lang
ran into one of the students from that work-
shop, Brian Chan, who was showing off a se-
ries of elaborate insect sculptures. Lang was so
impressed by Chans work that he felt a pang
of jealousy, and he asked Chan why he hadnt
shared the designs when Lang was at MIT.
He said, Ive done them all since the
workshop. I used your techniques to design
them, Lang recalls. He was instantly a
topight folder. It was fantastic. And he is
now on anyones short list of the worlds top
folders.
Right up there with Robert J. Lang. "
Justin Goldman
Origami in Engineering
Robert J. Lang is not just an engineer-
turned-artist; he also tries to bring his
engineering skills into Origami as well
as his Origami skills into engineering.
To help him with his creations, he has
programmed software that can transform
a stick gure of any given shape into a
crease pattern, the folded piece of paper
that is the basis of any Origami creation.
His software is probably the rst attempt
at CAOD Computer-Aided Origami
Design.
As a trained engineer, Lang also helps
out other engineers with his folding. For
the Eyeglass project, a proposed space tel-
escope with a 100-metre diameter lens, he
worked out an Origami pattern that folds
a at ring or disc into a compact cylinder.
And airbag designers use his Origami
algorithms to computer-simulate a folded
airbag. But Lang is not the only one fold-
ing art with science: other Origami artists
have inspired the development of heart
stents, solar arrays or solar sails.

Hazardous Substances
Gefahrstoffe sind im
Fertigungsumfeld
fast allgegenwrtig.
Um so wichtiger,
zumindest die
Grundlagen im Um-
gang mit ihnen zu
kennen. Eine kurze
Einfhrung.
Basics
In almost any production environment we are
knowingly or unknowingly exposed to
hazardous substances. Some of them are quite
obvious, like acetone or diesel exhausts, others
less, like soldering smoke or toner dust. So, what
exactly is a hazardous substance? Paracelsus
once said: Poison is in everything, and no
thing is without poison. The dosage makes it ei-
ther a poison or a remedy. As true as this might
be, it isnt very helpful, and so hazardous sub-
stances are usually distinguished by their effect.
Generally speaking, everything that is amma-
ble, explosive, corrosive, poisonous, carcinogenic
or in any way harmful to health or environment
is considered a workplace hazard.
These substances can be swallowed, inhaled or
they can enter the body through skin contact.
Although it seems pretty obvious not to take
a sip from a liquid thats marked with a skull
and crossbones, the workers take in the same
substance anyway when they forget to wash
their hands before handling food or touch-
ing their face. But most substances cause harm
when inhaled or absorbed through skin contact.
They become even more hazardous when they
are odourless or inconspicuous, like most kinds of
dust. No wonder respiratory problems and skin
irritations or allergies are among the most com-
mon occupational diseases.
Locating Hazards
Since most hazardous substances are not easy
to detect or, according to Paracelsus, only
harmful in a certain dosage, identication and
labelling becomes paramount. Easiest to spot are
substances which, with the help of the square
orange hazard symbols, are already marked
ammable, explosive, irritant, harmful, cor-
rosive, toxic or as an environmental hazard. In
addition to these symbols, so-called R phrases
detail the dangerous effects of the substance
and S phrases provide information on how to
handle it. The phrases are either directly printed
on the label or stated in an extra Safety Data
Sheet that comes with a substance. If the Safety
Data Sheet is missing, the supplier or numer-
ous databases on hazardous substances will
provide the necessary information. And even if
a substance doesnt have to be labelled because
of its low concentration, the supplier still has to
hand out a Safety Data Sheet on request.
While looking for the orange symbols to
avoid any danger is pretty straightforward, the
true threat comes from the hidden hazards,
substances that are safe per se but become
harmful when processed or mixed with other
substances. Take a brick, for example, which
usually isnt very harmful (except when thrown
off a scaffold, of course). Once you start drilling a
whole in it, however, you inhale the dust, and if
you do that day after day, the same brick might
cause bronchitis or even lung cancer.
Protective Measures
No matter whether these substances are obvi-
ous or not, are clearly marked or are hidden
hazards, protective measures are necessary
when handling. The common strategy is a
three-step process: avoid it, contain it or protect
yourself. Naturally, the best solution is simply
to avoid the hazardous substance. Guidelines
for substitutes help to select less hazardous alter-
natives. Or maybe the process or work step can
be changed to avoid the use of the substance
altogether. Although redesigning procedures
can be costly and less hazardous alternatives
might be more expensive, making the effort can
be cheaper in the long run even without con-
sidering costs for medical treatment or sick leave.
A worker not hindered by protective clothing or
slowed down by taking extra care might simply
be faster and more productive.
If the substance cant be replaced by an
alternative, it has to be contained or its release
restricted. This is usually done by enclosing the
substance or process and/or ensuring there is
a suitable exhaust ventilation or fume extractor.
Without even realising it, we use such devices
almost daily when refuelling our car. Dust col-
lection systems in a carpenters shop or the use
of a sealed barrel pump for emptying barrels are
also good examples.
The greatest caution has to taken with
substances which can neither be avoided nor
contained. Here, the worker has to be protected
directly with e.g. gloves, safety goggles, breathing
mask and/or a disposable overall (affectionately
called bunny suit). While protective clothing
in itself might be perfectly suited to avoid any
contact with the hazardous substance, it can
only do its job when it is worn. The human
factor shouldnt be underestimated. Gloves
itch, goggles impair the vision, masks constrict
breathing and overalls make you sweat. All
of which is loathed by a hard working man or
woman. Therefore, the workers must consist-

ently be informed of the risks and constant

But these are only of few of the duties of an
employer. Any manufacturer handling hazard-
ous substances has numerous obligations. The
rst is a thorough assessment of the workplace.
Which hazardous substances are used and
where? Are there any hidden hazards from
dust, smoke, mixing or heating substances?
And remembering Paracelsus in which
quantity are they used and where and how long
are workers exposed? A list of all the hazardous
substances with their corresponding R-phrases
is the basis for determining a hazard group, a
protective level and the appropriate protective
measures. While most hazardous substances
can be covered with such a simple control
scheme, any substance marked with the skull
and crossbones requires expert advice and a
special hazard assessment.
Naturally, such an assessment is only the
rst step, but it is a good basis for choosing
the necessary containment, protective cloth-
ing, special storage facilities and waste disposal
strategies. Regular instruction courses on safe

In Short
Alle Bilder: Skipavk
When the long winter comes down over Ice-
land and the days grow shorter in the coastal
town of Stykkishlmur, business at Skipavk
yard becomes less hectic. Time for the pet
project of yard owner Sigurjn Jnsson: the
construction of a modern Viking boat.
Back to the future? For four years now, the
successful businessman has been working on
making his dream a reality. The model for this
hull is the Gokstad ship, says Jnsson. With
these longships built in Norway 1200 years
ago, the Vikings went out on their voyages of
conquest. After its discovery and excavation, the
Gokstad ship was restored for display in Oslos
Viking Ship Museum. Even today, it is one of
the most beautiful vessels ever built, enthuses
the 57-year-old Icelander.
The idea of building a seagoing Viking yacht
with modern conveniences and materials came
to Sigurjn Jnsson during a long sailing trip.
In every port, he saw the same dreary picture:
Plastic boats in the same old style, sighs Jns-
son. The bustling Icelander, who had already
gone into retirement, was convinced that he had
discovered a new market niche and promptly
returned to working life.
Armed with his rst sketches, Jnsson con-
tacted Paul Spooner. The renowned designer
at the British Fairlie yard, a specialist rm for
historic sailing ships, was asked to assist with
the hull and rigging design of the new Viking
ship. Paul liked my idea, says Jnsson.
At present, three boat builders are putting
the nishing touches to the Viking replica at
Skipavk. When the ship hoists its gigantic
square sail with an area of 96 square metres
for the rst time, no less than 18,000 hours
will have been invested, with the major portion
being manual work. If the class turns out to be
a success, the enterprising Icelander plans to
build three boats a year. The high-tech Viking
raider will not be a giveaway, however. Says
Jnsson: The price tag will be around 1.7
million euros. But for all that, the new owner
will be getting a yacht of superlative quality
and eye-catching lines. Whereas the Vikings
took hemp, seal leather or walrus skin for their
shrouds and stays, the rigging of the modern
longship will use high-quality Liros ropes. The
mast, standing 15.5 metres above the deck, is
made of carbon bre, not wood.
The spar specialists at Collars have used a
glue-laminated construction method to achieve
the perfect curvature for the square sail an
important precondition for reaching the high
speeds of original ships. An exact replica of the
Gokstad original with a length of 23 metres
overall attained a speed of a little more than
20 knots. With our more modest size of 16.7
metres, we expect a speed of 14 knots, says
Jnsson.
In addition, Sigurjn Jnsson is making
every effort to optimize the cruising comfort:
three cabins with double bunks, air-condi-
tioning, heating and two engines are also
on board. Like its historic predecessor, the
futuristic Viking longship can also be sailed
single-handedly if necessary. I am really
looking forward to putting the boat through its
paces, says Jnsson. !

Scientists are aiming to secure urban food supplies with farms growing

Vertical
Farming
This worlds constantly growing metropolises
whether Calcutta, Delhi, Shanghai or Mexico
City have a gigantic requirement for foodstuffs,
impossible to satisfy in future with the yields
from open elds alone, since available arable
land will no longer sufce. The solution lies in
the city that supplies itself: The concept of urban
agriculture is not new in itself, but its dimen-
sions denitely are. Instead of promoting sup-
plies for urban populations with allotments in
which poorer inhabitants originally grew fruit
and vegetables, now scientists, architects and
environmental watchdogs are setting their sights
on the vertical farm, giving inner city high-rises a
completely new function. The visionary designs
range from the revamping of existing high-rise
facades to the construction of new buildings
of up to 30 storeys that consist of an enclosed
system which also supplies itself. Before this
is achieved, however, not only is it necessary to
successfully tackle a mass of new territory from
a technical point of view, but public scepticism
towards a new form of agriculture also needs to
be overcome.
Once upon a time, there was a small coun-
try that had a large-scale plan, involving two
million square metres, 300,000 pigs and 1.2
million chickens. The plan detailed Delta Park,
which was to be built in the Netherlands, as the
worlds rst urban farm a six-storey agricul-
tural machine in the Port of Rotterdam, about
1000 metres long and 400 metres wide, with sh
breeding in the basement, greenhouses full of
vegetables higher up, and with mushroom and
chicory cultivation taking place where no day-
light penetrates. Up on the roof, there were to be
wind turbines for power generation, and water,
sewage and rubbish were all to be recycled. The
high-tech farm, which was certainly backed by
the politicians, collapsed in 2001 in the face of
the negative reaction from the media and the
general public, who saw it as simply too indus-
trialized.
Today, some signicantly larger countries are
considering this type of agricultural produc-
tion and on a still greater scale than the 200
hectares planned in Rotterdam. World cities will
continue to grow, and supplying people there

with fresh products will become a challenge for
agriculture. An average city requires about ten
times its own area in arable land to feed itself.
If world population reaches 9 billion in 2050, as
forecast, more than a billion hectares of addition-
al land will be required or a chunk of terrain as
large as Brazil.
Heavier demand will mean that todays
accepted concept of agriculture will have to

be changed. Engineers, architects, environ-
mental watchdogs and visionaries are united
in dreaming of a new form of agriculture in
high-rises with the aim of ensuring sufcient
food for the urban population. Their men-
tor is Dickson Despommier, a microbiologist
at Columbia University in New York. His
vision is all-embracing: 30-storey farms right
in the middle of the cities, with hydro culture
for vegetables in the upper stories, and sh
and poultry being bred at lower levels. Such
vertical farms are designed as high-ef-
ciency greenhouses, drawing their energy
from wind turbines, solar cells or even the
tides, and surpassing conventional agriculture in
efciency thanks to lower consumption of land
and water. Lost harvests due to adverse weather
will be a thing of the past; short distances for
transport will ensure a clean carbon footprint. A
30-storey high-rise farm could supply 50,000
people with food conventional agriculture
would require 235 hectares.
The Agricultural Machine
Despommiers vision is not as unusual as it
initially seems. He and his collaborators want to
concentrate on foodstuffs currently produced
under glass or in sheds, bringing these into
the cities and, hence, as close to the consum-
ers as possible. As much attention needs to be
devoted to vertical farming as was once paid to
ights to the moon, says Despommier. He is
not the only person hoping to free the world in
this way of worries about its food supply. !

All the same, not everything is feasible in a
vertical farm. Growing and harvesting cereals in
high-rise conditions is problematical, trees grow
too slowly, and cattle have no place in them.
Herbs and greenstuffs and everything that can
be harvested relatively quickly, by contrast, are
at once possible and protable. Despommier
may be a visionary, but he is not a dreamer.
That such farms could materialize purely for
prot and without heed of the carbon footprint
is something that he certainly sees as a prob-
lem. Yet, for him sustainability is an
essential prerequisite. Along with the
introduction of high-rise farms, he
is also planning the re-forestation of
agricultural land that will help to
stabilize the climate.
The experiment of growing crops
has actually been running on the

Science Barge, a oating vegetable garden on
Hudson River. Gene Giacomelli of the Uni-
versity of Arizona, a specialist in agricultural
technology, has built a forcing house for a South
Pole station thus showing that this form of
agriculture even functions in extreme condi-
tions. Yet, numerous hurdles far nearer to hand
still need to be surmounted. Vertical farming
could become an imperative; it is at any rate an
inspiring concept. It also raises numerous ques-
tions quite aside from its technical feasibility.
To whom would the high-rise farms belong?
To food manufacturers, who would thus have
a monopoly of our food? Will it no longer be
nature, but even more emphatically than ever the
agricultural industry that dictates how we feed
ourselves? Will farmers, currently leaseholders or
landowners, have to become factory managers?
Who will own and look after former agricul-
tural land, on which only forests will still
grow? Will centuries-old growing techniques of
traditional cultivation some day become lost?
Will plants and animal species that can be used
in such projects be the only ones that survive?
And will such farms come into existence at all
in the regions where the need and the hunger
are greatest, or will high-income regions allow
themselves cute sky farms as a luxury?
Questions galore! It is still mainly natural
scientists who are concerned with the projects,
i.e. engineers, ecologists, biologists. It is time for
others to play a part the sociologists, psychol-
ogists and consumers. In the Netherlands, it
was public opinion at one time that caused the
downfall of the Delta Park project. If visions are
to become reality, they need to have their feet
on the ground. Only then will they take root. "

After a bumpy ight and a long wait
at the baggage reclaim at Heathrow,
you nally arrive at your London
branch. Your British colleague greets
you with a warm, How do you do?
How do you react?
! A
You say nothing. Its not a question
but only an empty phrase.
! B
You also say, How do you do?
! C
You tell him about the horrible
ight, the idiots at Heathrow and
your liver problems.
4
In a discussion with a British
colleague you strongly disagree
with his point of view. How do you
object?
! A
You cant be right!
! B
Interesting thought, maybe you
would like to consider
! C
Nonsense! I think
5
After long negotiations with a British
customer, you meet again the next
day. He greets you using your rst
name and without bothering to shake
hands. What does it mean?
! A
The deal is off. He just wants to
show you that he has lost all respect.
! B
The casual greeting is a very good
sign.
! C
Its just normal behaviour
1
You have called some British col-
leagues for a meeting. Theres a long
agenda and you dont have much
time. How do you start the meeting?
! A
You start right away with the rst
subject on the agenda.
! B
You try at least a little small talk
before starting.
! C
You ostentatiously put your watch on
the table to remind your colleagues
to hurry.
3
A British supplier calls you on the
phone saying that he has a slight
problem with the production of the
new parts. What does it mean?
! A
Nothing serious, he just wants to
chat and improve the business relati-
onship.
! B
There might be something wrong,
but surely hell gure it out.
! C
Probably a major problem. Take it
seriously and investigate.
2
Your business partner has heard
that you are an expert golfer and a
local champion. He touches on the
subject in a conversation. How do
you respond?
! A
You modestly admit that you are a
keen player.
! B
You recount your last championship
in every detail.
! C
You inform him that you are not
only a golf champion but also a very
good chess player.

Sweden is an intriguing country. Although it has
a huge land mass of 450,000 km, its population
totals only 9 million. That makes for a lot of
empty space in what must be a very large, cold
place. Yet it is obviously a very vibrant civilisa-
tion as it has produced huge corporations that
are household names (Volvo, Ericsson), inl-
trated every middle-class household with its
omnipresent products (IKEA, tetrapaks, H&M),
produced technology that has created weapons
of mass destruction (dynamite) and is, curi-
ously enough, also the guardian of the coveted,
prestigious Nobel Peace Prize. And of course, it
has given the world ABBA as well as a womens
football team that will surely give the German
national team a run for its money in the next
World Cup.
But for all that sporting rivalry, the relation-
ship between Sweden and Germany is cordial,
mutually respectful and protable. Most major
Swedish companies have a presence in Ger-
many and vice-versa. Germany is Swedens
principal trading partner, accounting for 18% of
Swedish imports and 10% of its exports. Since
1995, Sweden has been a member of the Euro-
pean Union.
While Sweden seems far away up north,
German companies are attracted to Sweden
because it is perfectly placed to enter Scandi-
navian and Baltic markets. All major cities in
Denmark, Finland and Norway are less than
12 hours away by truck while Estonia, Latvia,
Lithuania and western Russia can be easily
reached via high-frequency ferry links and an
extensive port network. Sweden is the multi-
corporation hub of the region.
And like Germany, Sweden has an educated
and technologically advanced populace as well
as a research and development environment
and culture. German automobile companies,
for instance, do winter-testing on their cars in
Sweden, not only because it effortlessly provides
natural winter conditions but also because it
has a fair amount of support staff scientists,
engineers, and road planners among many oth-
ers. Remote test areas can actually double their
populations when winter testing season is on.
Yet, Sweden remains steadfastly protective of
its natural environment, and shing, walking,
or just generally enjoying nature is an inte-
gral part of life. As Barry Siegel, an American
language and relocation consultant in Sweden
puts it, the Swedes are an interesting blend
of efciency and creativity spiced with healthy
attitudes about nature and body. Imagine the
Swede out in the forest picking mushrooms
with his or her cell phone hanging out of his or
her pocket.
The cell-phone is an apt icon Sweden is the
top IT nation in the world, with more than 90%
of its people owning a mobile phone as well as
extremely high internet access and participa-
tion. There are more than 1200 ICT companies
in the country, making Sweden a natural stop
for information and communication investors
and learners.
Britt-Marie Andren, an entrepreneur with her
own travel consultancy, thinks its because the
Swedes love new innovations and technology.
All of us are early adopters and foreign com-
panies often use us as a test market. Perhaps
the reason is we can afford to be experimental
and you are encouraged from when you are
little. Indeed, Swedish universities are blessed
with a generous R&D culture, often work-
ing closely with big names in industries. My

daughter is an engineer working in research for
Ericsson, to validate security program develop-
ment, says Andren. She is also mother of
three small children with an excellent chance
for good day care and to work exibly from
home or ofce, whichever is best for the family.
Yes, we like to work from a distance when it
suits us. And there are distances indeed in all
of Sweden. Perhaps thats why the cell phone is
such a necessary thing for the Swedes.
But Germany must also envy Sweden its rela-
tively stable and peaceful labour relations, in
spite of high trade union membership or, rather,
because of it. Employers are also highly organ-
ized into national associations. In the private
sector, the dominant central employers organi-
zation is the Confederation of Swedish En-
terprise and it is made up of various industry
and sector organisations. These industry-wide
workers unions and their counterpart em-
ployer organizations negotiate broad collective
labour agreements with an emphasis on com-
promise and legally binding peace obligations.
Industrial action, such as strikes or lockouts, is
rare in Sweden.
Solidarity and Group Thinking
Recent history has also been fortuitous to Swe-
den. Because of its neutral status during WW2,
Swedish infrastructure was left largely intact
during this difcult period and this gave it a
tremendous economic advantage. The socialist
government at the time used this position to
form a strong and unique social security net-
work, covering parental leave, childcare, worker
illness, accident insurance, disability insurance
and care for the elderly. Social security is
based on solidarity, and solidarity is marked by
group thinking, explains Magnus Ahlstedt, a
young Swedish engineer working in Germany.
However, this does not necessarily mean that
the Swedish are very obedient to authorities.
Swedes like to think in groups and dont like
authorities. A person is respected for what they
do and say and not for their position. Thats
why a Swedish organisation works very well in
matrix. German efciency is more driven by
the single person, whereas Swedish efciency
is team and group based. Socializing around a
cup of coffee two times a day is a must.
The consensus seems to be that Swedish cor-
porate culture is fairly easy-going. From the
classroom all the way to the boardroom, titles
like Mrs or Dr are things of the past. Students
and teachers, patients and doctors, employees
and employers everyone is on a rst-name
basis, says Anders Porter, a freelance writer.
They have even dropped the formal you ad-
dress form from the language, says Siegel.
You have to swallow the solidarity thing but
most people tend to like it, Ahlstedt advises.
Be prepared to work in teams and dont try to
make your voice heard over the others. Dont
impose your ideas with brute force, try to con-
vince through argumentation, and if youre on
a management level, try to accept that you will
not be treated with the same respect as when
you are in Germany. It is as if the Swedes have
collectively decided that social control is the
way to achieve social solidarity. It does seem
like a small price to pay for a generous social
security system, lots of space and nature, a
relaxed work culture, the latest in ICT develop-
ments and, of course, the likes of ABBA. !

Fliegen?
Aber sicher!
Fliegen ist sicher, sagt die
Statistik. Nur wollen uns das
Berichte von Abstrzen und
Gesundheitsrisiken nicht so
recht glauben lassen: Eine kurze
Bestandsaufnahme ber die
Sicherheit beim Fliegen.
Thema
Bild: photocase.comgiftgruen
Wie sicher ist Fliegen? Sehr sicher, so zumin-
dest vermitteln es uns immer wieder die Statis-
tiken: 2007 kamen weltweit bei 35 Flugzeug-
unfllen 750 Menschen um, whrend in der
gleichen Zeit allein auf deutschen Straen bei
etwa 450.000 schweren Unfllen 4970 Men-
schen starben. Keine Frage also, das Flugzeug
ist und bleibt das sicherste Verkehrsmittel.
Warum checkt dann aber nur allzuoft
ein mulmiges Gefhl mit ein, wenn wir ein
Flugzeug betreten? Da ist zum einen natrlich
der Sicherheits-Striptease, den wir bei jedem
Einchecken machen mssen. Ohne Frage ist
das heute leider unentbehrlich, erinnert uns
aber gleichzeitig sehr plastisch daran, was so
alles passieren knnte. Keine gute Grundlage
fr einen entspannten Flug. Wer trotzdem
die Furcht vor Gewaltakten ausblenden kann,
den mgen andere ngste plagen. Gerade
wir Ingenieure wissen wie komplex Flugzeuge
und Flugsicherung sind und welche immen-
ser Wartungsaufwand dahinter steckt. Doch
wie viel bleibt wohl von den 19,90 Euro des
Schnppchentickets fr den Servicetechniker
brig? Doch manchen hilft selbst das grte
Vertrauen in die Fluggesellschaft nicht weiter.
Sie leiden unter Flugangst, frchten Gesund-
heitsschden auf Langstreckengen oder
haben ein schlechtes Gewissen, weil sie sozu-
sagen in bester Lage mit den Flugzeugabgasen
den Treibhauseffekt ankurbeln.
Ist Fliegen also wirklich so sicher fr uns und
unsere Mitmenschen? Die Beschftigung mit
dieser Frage ist zumindest im Geschftsalltag
rein philosophischer Natur, denn bei vielen
Geschftsreisen kommen wir um das Flug-
zeug kaum herum.
Flughafenpersonal verlassen. Genau zu
wissen, was wohin gehrt und was besser
zu Hause bleibt, vermeidet jedoch unntigen
Stress fr das Sicherheitspersonal, die Mitrei-
senden und natrlich einen selbst.
Dass Feuerwaffen und Messer nicht mit an
Bord gebracht werden, ist selbstverstndlich,
ebenso wie der Verzicht auf lustige Bemer-
kungen ber Bomben und Terroristen beim
Einchecken.

tte. Praktische Prbchenpackungen in dieser
Gre gibts inzwischen in jeder Drogerie. Als
Flssigkeit zhlen brigens auch Zahnpasta,
Cremes oder Sprays. Ausgenommen davon
sind nur Medikamente und fr Geschfts-
reisende weniger von Belang Babynahrung,
allerdings begrenzt auf die fr den Flug unent-
behrliche Menge.
Selbstverstndlich drfen sich im Handge-
pck auch keine spitzen Gegenstnde wie
Taschenmesser, Schraubendreher oder Kor-
kenzieher benden. Nagelfeile und -schere
im Kulturbeutel also nicht vergessen. Werk-
zeuge sind zwar theoretisch bis zu einer Lnge
von 18 Zentimetern erlaubt, aber selbst ein
harmloser 11er Gabelschlssel drfte im Zwei-
felsfall als Waffe angesehen werden. Also ab
damit ins groe Gepck. Ebenso wie mit allen
Elektrowerkzeugen.
ten Briefumschlag mitnehmen. In dem knnen
aussortierte Gegenstnde dann nach Hause
geschickt und so vor der Vernichtung bewahrt
werden.
Warten auf die Wartung
Sind alle Passagiere gescannt und fr harmlos
befunden, bleibt dennoch die Ungewissheit
ber die Sicherheit und den Zustand des
Flugzeugs. Zwar drfte die Wartungsmoral der
meisten groen Fluggesellschaften ber jeden
Zweifel erhaben sein, aber wer wei schon,
in welcher abgelegenen Ecke des Globus das
nchste Projekt wartet. Leider lsst sich dieser
Punkt der Flugsicherheit aktiv nur sehr be-
grenzt beeinussen. Ein Blick auf die schwarze
Liste der in der EU gesperrten Luftfahrtunter-
nehmen oder in die Sicherheitsstatistik einer
Fluggesellschaft informiert zumindest ber die
Wahrscheinlichkeit eines Zwischenfalls. Wer es
sich aussuchen kann, sollte dann eine mg-
lichst groe Maschine whlen, denn groe
Flugzeuge sind sicherer als kleine, ebenso wie
Verbindungen mit mglichst wenig Starts und
Landungen. Sich die Sicherheitseinweisung
und die bunten Bildchen auf dem Sicherheits-
blatt zumindest einmal ganz genau anzu-
schauen, ist sicher nicht verkehrt. Wer dann
gewhrleisten.
Doch selbst bei der zuverlssigsten Airline
mit hervorragend gewarteten Maschinen
bleibt ein Rest Unsicherheit. Eine Unsicherheit
die sich bei 70 Prozent der Passagiere auch
mit den besten Argumenten nicht wegdis-
kutieren lsst. So viele leiden nmlich nach
Schtzungen von Psychologen an mehr oder
weniger starker Flugangst.

gewonnen.
Deutsche IT-Investoren konzentrieren sich seit
2001 vor allem auf das Gebiet Siebenbrgens,
zu dem die alten traditionellen Bindungen
reaktiviert wurden. Dies geschah nicht zuletzt,
weil dort deutsche Sprachkenntnisse weit ber
die deutsche Minderheit hinaus vorhanden sind.
Hier kommt der grte und oft unterschtzte
Exportschlager Rumniens ins Spiel: seine hoch
qualizierten Ingenieure, rzte, IT-Spezialisten
und Wissenschaftler.
Outsourcing ist auch in anderen Regionen
Rumniens zum beliebten Modewort europ-
ischer Manager geworden. Rumnien boomt,
auch und vor allem in der Zulieferindustrie der
Automobilbranche. Dass auch von der Out-
sourcing-Idee bislang vllig unbeeckte Wirt-
schaftszweige allmhlich auf den Geschmack
kommen, zeigt die sterreichische Regierung im
Jahre 2004, als sie zwei ihrer Gefngnisse nach
Rumnien ausgliedern lie.
Whrend manche einheimi-
sche Mnner 14 bis 18 Stunden arbeiten oder
mehrere Zusatzjobs haben, um ber die Runden
zu kommen, machen sich andere durchaus
einen faulen Lenz. Wie sie das hinbekommen
ist vielen ein Rtsel. Ein soziales Netz wie in
Deutschland gibt es in Rumnien nicht.
Der rumnische Schriftsteller Mircea
Crtrescu sieht das etwas anders. Er beschreibt
den rumnischen Mann eher als gestressten
Hysteriker, zumindest was den Durchschnitts-
mann der rumnischen Grostdte betrifft.
Die rumnischen Mnner stehen unter einem
enormen Druck. Als Grund gibt Crtrescu die
Lebensumstnde an. So seien zum Beispiel die
meisten Mnner und Frauen in Rumnien unter-
bezahlt. Die Menschen sind sehr frustriert. Du
begegnest in ffentlichen Rumen, besonders in
den geschlossenen Rumen der Schalterhallen,
stndig mrrischen, unhichen oder garstigen

Die gestressten Mnner, so Crtrescu,

Verhaltenstipps
Man schenkt in Rumnien keine gerade
Anzahl von Blumen an eine noch leben-
de Person. Gerade Zahlen sind fr die
Toten gedacht und wrden eine sehr
schlechte Ausgangsbasis fr eine even-
tuell gerade zart keimende Freundschaft
bedeuten.
Ein Mann betritt immer zuerst und vor
einer Frau das Restaurant, die Bar, die
Hotelhalle usw. Dies wird aber durch
das hiche Verhalten der Mnner beim
Verlassen des Restaurants wieder wett
gemacht. Hier endlich darf die Frau auf
den Brgersteig als Erste hinausgehen.
Rumnen neigen dazu, Termine nicht
ganz so verbissen zu sehen wie Deut-
sche das fr gewhnlich tun.
Als regelrecht beleidigend empnden
es die meisten Rumnen, pauschal als
kriminell abgestempelt zu werden. Die
ofziellen Kriminalittsstatistiken weisen
in Rumnien weniger Gewalttaten aus,
als in den Nachbarlndern Kroatien,
Bulgarien oder Ukraine.
ffentliche Position bekleiden, wrden diese nur
liebend gerne zu patriarchalischen Machtspielen
missbrauchen. Mnner spielen sich dann wie
despotische Knige auf und der Kunde, Klient
oder Informationssuchende wird behandelt wie
ein Objekt irgendein Objekt.
Tatschlich kann man in jeder groen rum-
nischen Stadt ein Phnomen bemerken, das
vor allem Mnner betrifft: Die Rumnen haben
keine Geduld. In den Warteschlagen der mter,
Behrden oder Supermarktkassen drngeln sich
stndig irgendwelche Mnner durch. Bemerken
besser. Von Bestechung spricht man im engeren
Sinn nur in Verbindung mit staatlichen Einrich-
tungen. !

Its raining in Ketzin. A drill tower rises up
toward the dark clouds; a few gas tanks and
a plain shack stand in a green meadow in the
middle of the Havelland district, half an hour
west of Potsdam. Professor Frank Schilling
from the research facility Geo-Forschungs-
Zentrum Potsdam (GFZ) points down into a
mud-lled hole from which a pipe as wide as
a man protrudes. A tangle of cables can be seen
inside it. Heres where we measure the spread
of carbon dioxide underground, says Schilling,
who is a mineralogist. At the other end of the
meadow, a second hole plunges down, this one
also lled with a mass of cables, and 100 metres
away there is a third hole. At this last one, pipes
from a tank run into the damp soil. 700 metres
under Schillings feet, these pipes will pump up
to four tons of carbon dioxide per hour into the
sandstone at high pressure, thus displacing salt
water from pores in the rock.
The GFZ project near Ketzin, a town with a
population of 4,000, is called CO
2
SINK. For two
years, beginning in the spring of 2008, it will in-
ject 60,000 tons of carbon dioxide underground
for storage. Thats as much as the 150,000
residents of Potsdam will exhale during the same
period, but its nothing compared to the more
than 10 billion tons of this greenhouse gas that
are blown into the atmosphere by the human
race each year through power plant chimney
stacks. And the problem will grow more acute,
judging by the forecasts of the International
Energy Agency, which indicate that fossil fuels
will account for 85 % of the increase in power
production over the next 20 years. The capacity
of coal-red power plants worldwide will then
be 2,200 GW about twice what it is today. !

In view of these developments, CO

could, in spite of its modest scope, provide im-
portant answers to basic unresolved questions
regarding carbon dioxide sequestration and
therefore contribute signicantly to environ-
mental protection. If the measurements in
Ketzin conrm the models, which predict that
the gas can be securely conned underground
in porous rock for thousands, if not millions,
of years, the project would send an impor-
tant signal worldwide. It would prove that
carbon dioxide from coal-red power plants,
reneries, cement factories, and steel mills can
be pumped into the earth and stored there.
And if the gas isnt emitted into the air, it cant
harm the climate.
Moreover, there is an abundance of room un-
derground for carbon dioxide. The capacity for
carbon dioxide sequestration in Germany alone
is estimated at 30 billion tons. Thats enough for
about 100 years at the current rate of carbon di-
oxide emissions from German coal-red power
plants about 350 million tons. The Intergov-
ernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) of
the U.N., a Nobel Prize recipient that galvanized
the political class and the media last year with
its reports on climate change, estimates global
sequestration capacity to be up to 900 billion
tons in oil and gas deposits and at least 1,000,
possibly even 10,000, billion tons in saline aqui-
fers, which are sandstone deposits saturated with
salt water, like those found in Ketzin. These
potential sequestration sites around the world
are also often found near large carbon dioxide
producers, where liqueed carbon dioxide can
be easily transported in pipes to storage depots.
This is the case not only in Brandenburg, but
also in the U.S. state of Illinois, where a proto-
type carbon-dioxide-free power plant is being
tested in the Future-Gen project. The dream of
a coal-red power plant with a direct exhaust
line into the subterranean rock could become
a reality in many places around the world if
policy makers quickly lay the groundwork and
research efforts are intensied.
Studies show that carbon dioxide remains
underground for an extremely long time. It
will dissolve there in saline aquifers, much as it
dissolves in mineral water when pumped by a
carbon dioxide carbonator, and will then be re-
tained in the pores of the sandstone. Over time,
more and more of it will precipitate as a mineral
compound and thus be kept out of the atmos-
phere forever. It is known that after thousands
of years calcium carbonate is produced, as well as
other carbonates such as magnesite and siderite.
Verifying the underlying models and furnishing
proof of whether and how carbon dioxide can
be reliably sequestrated over the long term are
among the central aims of the CO
2
SINK project.
Underground Laboratory
One essential task of CO
2
SINK is, therefore, to
monitor the three-dimensional propagation of
carbon dioxide in rock and draw conclusions ap-
plicable to commercial carbon dioxide sequestra-
tion at other locations. No other project any-
where is going to such great lengths to gather
measurements in this respect.
In the projects two measuring pipes, which
are 50 and 100 metres away from the pipe
carrying the gas, chains of electrodes measure
electrical resistance in the rock. This array of
electrodes is supplemented by electrodes at the
surface. Concentrated salt water in the pores
of the sandstone conducts the electrical cur-
rent very well. When the water is displaced
by carbon dioxide, conductivity decreases and
resistance increases. Thanks to this geoelectric
tomography, the gas can be monitored in great
detail in three dimensions as it spreads.
The project team is also carrying out experi-
ments modelled on medical ultrasound. Here,
intense sound waves are transmitted into the
ground from the surface between the boreholes
and reected back. Since sound has a lower
velocity in pores lled with carbon dioxide than
in those lled with salt water, the spread of the
gas can be monitored this way as well.
In addition to that, optical sensors measure
temperature changes underground through
the scattering of photons and thereby show the
ow of carbon dioxide

below the surface. In the
area of the reservoir around the bores, there are
narrow tubes with a semi-permeable membrane
through which carbon dioxide can pass. High-
purity argon forces the carbon dioxide upward
through capillary tubes to the surface, where its
concentration is measured.
Whatever the results of the measurements,
one thing is certain, says Frank Schilling:
Practically nothing travels upward through

tists plan to pump 60,000

the rock. The reason for this is the cap layer of
gypsum and clay that lies like a bowl over the
approximately nine-square-kilometre dome of
sandstone and completely seals it. It has served
the same purpose over the past forty years, when
power companies used a sandstone layer here
at a depth of between 250 and 400 metres to
store natural gas. This repository was signi-
cantly larger than the planned carbon dioxide
reservoir.
What would happen if the carbon dioxide
managed to escape to the surface? Since the
gas is heavier than air, critics fear that it could
collect in pools where it would suffocate all
life. But theres no risk of this in Ketzin, says
Schilling. Even if it were to escape, the carbon
dioxide would be literally gone with the wind.
We breathe it in in small quantities all the time,
and drink it in sparkling mineral water and soft
drinks. Besides, the quantity of carbon dioxide
stored in two years will merely be equal to the
amount naturally generated in the same period
by bacteria through degradation processes in
the soil in the area above the carbon dioxide
reservoir in Ketzin.
Ideal carbon dioxide reservoirs exist wher-
ever gases or liquids have long accumulated
underground. That basically means all petro-
leum and natural gas deposits which have
manifestly been sealed for millions of years.
Some oil and gas producers already pump car-
bon dioxide back into such deposits in order to
raise the yield through increased pressure. There
are three industrial-scale showpiece projects in
Canada, Algeria, and Norway. Statoil Hydro of
Norway, for instance, has the most experience
here. Since 1996 it has pumped 10 million tons
of carbon dioxide down to a depth of 1,000 me-
tres beneath the North Sea. The carbon dioxide
is an impurity that is extracted with the natural
gas. But it would cost Statoil Hydro dearly to
vent it, as Norway levies a tax of $50 on each ton
of carbon dioxide.
The IPCC report calculates the cost of
carbon dioxide capture by low-carbon-di-
oxide power plants and its transportation
and sequestration to be 20 to 70 dollars per
ton. Thats worth the price in Norway, but in
countries without a carbon dioxide tax, other
market mechanisms must come into play. In
Europe, the certicates in the emissions trad-
ing system provided for by the Kyoto Protocol
currently cost less than $20 not enough to
create an incentive. But in the event of a state
subsidy or a carbon dioxide tax of 0.02 to 0.03
U.S. $/kWh, the technology would pay for
itself, although the cost of electricity would
increase by 20 percent. " Bernd Mller

Some Grammar!
Any Questions?
Are there any parts of English grammar that confuse you? Some might
say the tenses are tough. Some might say its the smaller things that
cause the problems. Some people often confuse some and any, for
example. Would you like some revision on that topic? Yes? Well, here
are some tips.

Some and any, two such simple little words
but two words that are so often used wrongly,
a bit like much and many, which have
caused many a headache for learners of Eng-
lish, at many levels. We wont go into the latter
two here but, instead, concentrate on the rst
two. Some and any tend to cause difculty
particularly for German speakers as the trans-
lation of the two in many sentences might
be the same, or, indeed, there is no direct
translation into the German sentence. They
are, however, clearly distinguished in English.
Unlike with the question of much or many,
there is no need to take into account whether
something is countable or uncountable when
looking at some and any. The distinction
lies elsewhere. The basic rule is quite simple:
Some is used in positive sentences.
Any is used in negative sentences and
questions.
Some Exceptions
Of course, as always, there are some excep-
tions. Some can also be used in a question,
normally if the person asking the question
expects or wants the answer to be positive:
Can you give me some information on the
different software packages?
Or especially when offering something:
Would you like some help with that?
Would you like some revision on that
topic?
Compare the following examples:
Did you get any help with your presenta-
tion?
Did you do any revision before the test?
Nr. 3 September 2008 42

Any is used in positive statements if words
such as never, hardly or without are also
involved.
We have never had any problems with this
particular machine.
Weve had hardly any downtime.
It runs without any maintenance.
It is also used in if sentences:
If you have any problems, call the hotline.
And in indirect, or uncertain, statements:
Im not too sure whether we have any
sales literature on that.
They dont know if there will be any per-
manent damage.
Some can also be used to indicate some
unknown or unspecied element:
Some fool forgot to switch off the lights
last night, what a waste!
Hes late again. Hell no doubt have some
perfect excuse.
Any is also used to mean almost every:
You can use any computer, it doesnt mat-
ter which.
Any technician should be able to deal with
that.
Do anything you want to do.
Compounds
The last of those examples brings us to a
number of other expressions which include
the words some and any, so-called com-
pounds:
something/anything
someone/somebody/anyone/anybody
somewhere/anywhere
Vokabeldownload: www.engine-magazin.de/extras
compound kcmpaund Zusammensetzung
distinguish, to
d/tlnggw/sch
unterscheiden
downtime Ausfallzeit
exception Ausnahme
fuse Sicherung
gears Getriebe
latter latc letztere
maintenance Wartung
setting Einstellung
take into account, to bercksichtigen
In principle, these words all follow exactly
the same rules as above.
Theres something wrong with the gears.
Someone has changed the basic settings.
You cant use this desk. Youll have to go
somewhere else.
Would you like something to drink?
Does anyone know where the nearest
bookshop is?
Is there anything we still havent dis-
cussed?
Is there anywhere we can go to talk in
private?
We cant decide if anything needs chang-
ing.
One difference is that these compounds can
stand on their own, unlike some and any,
which generally need to come before a noun.
Weve changed some fuses.
Weve changed something.
We havent got any batteries.
We havent got anything. !

Be it an employment contract, partnership
agreement, joint venture agreement, warran-
ty or perhaps a purchase agreement, at some
point most of us have had to deal with an
ofcial legal document. Even in ones native
language, this style of writing can be rather
daunting, and on occasions a little frustrat-
ing. And this is multiplied when you are
faced with documents in a foreign language.
However, there is no need to run away from
them or hastily pass them on to a colleague
you might consider more able to come to
terms with them.
Legal English isnt really a wildly different
language creature as such. It is based very
much on standard English, but has a number
of specic features. The biggest difference
lies in the terminology vocabulary! Like
any specialist area engineering, medicine
nance, marketing the law has a plethora
of terms which are only, or at least primarily,
used in legal contexts. These can be looked
up in a dictionary, although this, as we all
know, is time consuming. The most common
ones can be learned. There may also be vari-
ations in the structure of the sentences in use
and in the punctuation within the text, which
well deal with later.
Vocabulary
When it comes to vocabulary, there are many
terms which are either used exclusively in a
legal context or which might have a slightly
different meaning to their use in standard,
everyday English. Although some might
not be instantly known by the layman, many
of them appear in nancial and insurance
documents and are fairly easy to learn. In
the practice section you will nd some ex-
amples. Try to match them with the explana-
tions provided.
A great deal of terms in law have their
origins in Latin, which might not come as
a surprise, but there are also many French
words that have survived into the modern-
day English legal system.
Some common French words still in use
today include:
court the place where justice is carried
out, or the people who carry out justice
tort a wrongful act
plaintiff the party who starts legal ac-
tion, also known as a claimant
defendant the opposite of plaintiff,
i.e. the party against whom the claim is
brought
mortgage a special loan to buy or build
property whereby the property becomes
the security for the loan
force majeure Act of God, something
which is beyond your control
verdict a decision made in a court case
culprit the person who commits a crime
bailiff a legal ofcer
attorney a lawyer
Nr. 3 September 2008 46

Many Latin words are still used in their
original form in legal documentation, some
might say purely to impress and/or confuse
the layman. The practice section provides
some examples. Try to match them with the
Latin expressions.
One common feature of legal English is
the tendency to combine two or three words
into a xed phrase. This technique has
developed through the centuries and is used
to avoid any ambiguities and to give greater
emphasis to the expression. Indeed, many of
the couplets include two words which actu-
ally mean the same thing.
null and void,
true and correct
consent and agree
cease and desist
sole and exclusive
t and proper
Other common examples include:
have and hold
perform and discharge
last will and testament
each and every
aiding and abetting
breaking and entering
Other Aspects
Another aspect particular to many legal
documents is the fact that there is a complete
lack of any punctuation. This is done to
avoid any confusion or wrong interpretation
of the text, although in many cases it has ex-
actly the opposite result, as you end up with
rather long, drawn out sentences. Take the
following paragraph as an example.
The Franchisee shall purchase from the
Franchisor the said products on the terms
and conditions hereinafter described and on
such or any amended terms and conditions as
may be additionally agreed in writing at any
point of time in the course of this agreement.
This extract also illustrates a number of
other aspects specic to legal writing. For
example, the word order can often be a little
different from standard English (conditions
hereinafter described). Whats more, words
such as hereinafter would rarely be used in
everyday English, but they are used fre-
quently in legal English. Here-, there-, and
where- words (e.g. hereof, thereof, whereof)
are used mostly to avoid repetition (e.g. This
agreement and any activities in pursuance
thereof shall be subject to Here, thereof
replaces of this agreement) or further
lengthy explanations (e.g. using hereinafter
means you dont have to say conditions
described in the following paragraphs of this
contract). Our paragraph above also gives
an example of the use of shall to show
obligation and may to show discretion, both
of which repeatedly appear in legal contexts.
The said (products) is a common way to re-
fer back to something which has previously
appeared in the document, similar to the
same or the aforementioned. Finally, we
can also see how English uses endings to dif-
ferentiate between the parties to a business
relationship (franchisor/franchisee). Other
common examples are employer/employee,
consignor/consignee, lessor/lessee.
Well, as I said at the beginning, I dont
really expect you go to away now and draw
up a contract in perfect legal English, but I
do hope Ive gone a little way to introduce
you to the world of legalese. !

Chairing a Meeting
The economist John Kenneth Galbraith once said, Meetings are
indispensable when you dont want to do anything. Unfortunately,
many business people have this view and see meetings as a waste of
time, time which could be better spent doing something else. An effective
chairperson can go a long way to making sure that this is not the case.
Meetings haben ei-
nen schlechten Ruf,
viele halten sie fr
Zeitverschwendung.
Dabei bedarf es nur
guter Vorbereitung
und konzentrierter
Moderation, um
aus einem Meeting
einen Erfolg zu ma-
chen. Hier ein paar
Tipps.
Business
Bild: photocase.com
Chairing a meeting effectively does not come
naturally; it is a skill but, fortunately, one that
can be learned through practice and effort. This
begins before a meeting is even called. The
chair should have a clear understanding of the
purpose of the meeting and why it is necessary.
It should be clear what outcome one would like
to achieve. In the planning stage, certain points
need to be considered. Decide who should be
invited to the meeting and make sure that the
most important ones are able to attend. When
drawing up the agenda, it may be necessary to
confer with some key people in order to assess
the importance of each item and how much
time needs to be allotted for discussion. Once the
agenda has been nalised, it should be circulated
well in advance to allow time for preparation.
Any important or lengthy documents should
be included so that time is not wasted during
the meeting. If one of the participants has to
take the minutes during the meeting, decide
beforehand who it is going to be. Waiting until
the meeting begins not only wastes time but can
get it off to a bad start if no-one volunteers and
someone is pressured into taking them.
Conducting a meeting in a foreign language is
quite a challenge. Think of the specic words or
phrases you will need and look up in a diction-
ary any you do not know. Make a list to have
beside you at the meeting in case you forget
them. Also prepare a few small-talk questions
which may come in handy before the meeting
formally begins.
Set a good example and start on time. It
shows latecomers that their behaviour is not
acceptable, and waiting for latecomers signals
to the punctual participants that it is OK to
be late next time. However, be sensitive to the
expectations of different nationalities. Some
nationalities may interpret a 9 oclock start
differently from the way Germans do. Having
refreshments available for when people arrive
may avoid this problem. If the participants do
not know each other, go quickly around the
table for everyone to introduce themselves but
make it clear what sort of introduction is re-
quired, e.g., Lets just keep it to name and job
title for now. We can get to know each other
better over lunch.
During the Meeting
Review the agenda and set parameters for the
meeting. Often, it is useful to begin with a
consent agenda to quickly deal with routine
and non-controversial items before moving
onto items that require more discussion.
It is the chairs role to keep the meeting on
track and to keep to the agenda. Tactfully end
discussions when they are getting nowhere
or becoming unproductive; I think we are
moving away from the point, lets return to the
agenda. / Its an interesting discussion, but
perhaps we can save it for a separate meeting.
Remember to keep an eye on the time so that
discussions do not overrun and result in hasty
decisions being taken.
In order to hear all points of view and ideas,
the chair should encourage group discussion
where everyone has some input. This will lead
to better quality decisions as well as making
members feel that their contribution is impor-
tant. If a member has said very little, dont high-

light the fact with phrases such as youve been
very quiet or we havent heard from Peter
yet. Instead, highlight the value of their opin-
ion, You have knowledge in this eld, Peter.
Whats your view? Ensuring that every-
one gets a chance to speak will help to avoid a
few dominating the discussion. However, if
this does happen, value their contribution, but
involve others, Thank you Pam, thats very
helpful. What do the rest of you think about
what Pams just said?
Another requirement is that the chair sum-
marises. This doesnt just take place at the end
of a meeting, it may be necessary in order to
bring together a number of opinions and argu-
ments, especially if the item under discussion
is complex or lengthy or it may be to round off
a discussion before a vote is taken. Summaris-
ing ensures that everyone has a clear overview
of what was said. To be effective, summarising
requires the important skill of active listening,
which will then enable you to state concisely
what was said in an impartial way and end with
a clear statement about what will happen next.
During the meeting the chair should keep an
eye on body language, which can often show
if someone disagrees. If this happens, bring
the person into the discussion and ask them to
comment on what has been said. Nonverbal
behaviour can also indicate if people are getting
dgety or bored, which may signal that a discus-
sion is going nowhere or has run its course.
Then its time to step in and summarise.
If a discussion becomes confrontational and
peoples tempers start to rise or voices are raised,
try to identify the interests and values that
underlie both sides and seek ways to negotiate a
resolution. Nevertheless, all participants should
be encouraged to feel equally responsible for
the meeting to run smoothly and effectively and
should be discouraged from looking to the chair
every time a problem arises.
When the time comes to close the meeting,
review the main points and make sure that any-
one who has been assigned a task knows exactly
what is expected of them, their responsibilities
and the deadline involved. Finally, set a date,
time and place for the next meeting and end the
meeting on time!
After the Meeting
Distribute the minutes within a few days as
this will reinforce the importance of the meet-
ing and help to reduce errors due to a lapse of
memory concerning what took place. If any
serious problems occurred during the meet-
ing, reect on what happened and discuss the
matter with other colleagues or superiors so
that improvements can be made or similar situ-
ations avoided in the future. Remember to put
unnished business on the agenda for the next
meeting.
The most effective chairs of meetings are
those who listen, who involve everyone, and
draw out members opinions and ideas by us-
ing open-ended questions. To get people to give
their best, they need to know that their contri-
butions are valued and that they will get credit
for their ideas. It is the chairperson who sets the
tone and manages the process. To nish with
another quotation, this time from an anony-
mous author, Effective meetings dont happen
by accident, they happen by design. !

On the
Move
Jens: Not from injuries I hope.
Egbert: Well, one sprained an ankle so couldnt
continue, one was afraid of heights so
left on the Sunday morning and the other
two, who were from the same company,
decided it was not what they needed and
gave up. Actually, I think they thought it
would be an easy weekend of eating and
drinking with the occasional activity.
Jens: But did you know what you were let-
ting yourself in for?
Egbert: Absolutely not! When we arrived on
the Friday afternoon, we were given a brief
introductory talk followed by a coupled of
ice-breaking activities to get to know each
other.
Jens: The standard thing?
Egbert: Yes, more or less. However, one
activity involved building a centre for a
training seminar. We were given coloured
cards, scissors and glue. The group I was in
took time to get started. We couldnt agree
on an approach or what type of building.
Interestingly, when we were later analys-
ing different types of team member, it
turned out that we had quite an imbalance.
Jens: Sorry, I dont quite follow.
Egbert: Well, some people are coordinators,
others more creative, some pay great atten-
tion to details, that sort of thing. Obvi-
ously, no-one is 100 per cent one type, but
as the weekend went on, it was possible to
identify the different traits in people.
Jens: Did the different job areas play a role?
Egbert: Yes, I think so. There were a few
engineers in the group and Id say we de-
nitely approached things differently from,
say, HR people or marketing people.
Jens: It sounds really interesting.
Egbert: The fun hasnt started yet. In order to
build up trust, we were put into groups.
One was blindfolded and had to fall back-
wards and be caught by the other members.
Jens: Ive heard of that, and I dont think I
could do it.
Egbert: My biggest problem was that in my
group there were a couple of very petite
women and a rather slim guy.
Jens: No problem for you to catch them.
Egbert: Of course not. But I had visions of me
attening them if they were supposed to
catch me.
Jens: So what happened?
Egbert: Well, when it came to my turn to
be blindfolded, I was really anxious. The
seminar leader kept telling me to trust the
group, but I just couldnt let myself fall
backwards. Just as I was thinking Id give
up, a quiet female voice said, Do you re-
ally think well let you hurt yourself? I felt
so ashamed so I just fell backwards. It was
quite an experience.
Jens: But what happened?
Egbert: Nothing.
Jens: What do you mean, nothing? Did the
two women catch you?
Egbert: No.
Jens: No?
Egbert: No. Of course I was too big and heavy
for them and the guy. So, they did what
anyone should do in that situation and
called in expert help. A big guy from one of
the other groups came over to help. Look-
ing back, that was one of the easiest things
we had to do.
Jens: Im beginning to think you enjoyed
yourself.
Egbert: I can denitely say that enjoy is
a thought that never crossed my mind the
whole weekend.
Jens: Then what was so bad?
Egbert: Now its over, I cant say anything was
bad. I think I learned a lot, but the weekend was
very gruelling.
Jens: In what way?
Egbert: Friday evening, we were told to get
plenty of sleep as it would be an early start the
next day. After breakfast at 7 oclock, we were
driven to a river. We were put into groups of
six or eight and allocated to a guide, who gave
us a brieng session on safety and techniques.
Then we were each kitted out with a wetsuit, life
jacket and crash helmet.

Jens: Stop building up the suspense. What did
you have to do?
Egbert: Youll never believe this. White-water
rafting!
Jens: Youre right. I dont. Egbert, are you trying
to tell me you went over waterfalls, in a boat,
voluntarily?
Egbert: Actually, theyre called rapids, not
waterfalls, and I really had no choice. Its not
only Asians that have a problem with losing
face. Besides, I kept repeating to myself, Its
just a matter of trust. These guys know what
they are doing. After all, they were hoping to
drum up business so they werent going to put
our lives in jeopardy.
Jens: So what happened next?
Egbert: First of all, we all went to the river and
in quite calm, shallow water we had to hold
hands and stand on the outside rim of an inat-
able raft.
Jens: That must have been some balancing feat.
Did you manage it?
Egbert: Sort of. For a few seconds anyway,
before falling off into the water. But our guide
just said, Well, the worst thing that can hap-
pen is to fall in, and as youve just done that,
its now plain sailing.
Jens: I cant believe Im hearing this!
Egbert: We were then taken by bus higher up the
river, got into the raft, settled down with our
paddles and, whoosh, off we went.
Jens: Where was the guide?
Egbert: Oh, he was at the back, totally in control,
but you dont know that at the time when hes
yelling instructions and your heart is in your
mouth and the adrenalin is rushing. Every time
you go over some rapids and get soaked, you
think youll fall in. I cant say that my life
ashed before my eyes, I didnt have time to
think, but it was just amazing.
Jens: As my son would say, awesome.
Egbert: Wait for it. When we got to the bottom,
we were told that wed just had the dummy run
and would now experience the real thing. After
a few more instructions, the whole procedure
was repeated, but this time the guide was obvi-
ously making the run more difcult, and as we
went over the nal rapids, he manoeuvred the
raft at such an angle that we capsized.
Jens: What do you mean? You all fell in?
Egbert: Not only fell in, but the raft was upside
down. We really had our work cut out to right
it and climb back in. After that, you know what
team spirit is all about.
Jens: But if that was at the beginning of the
weekend, what else did you have to do?
Egbert: Oh, walking in the tree tops, jumping
from platform to platform. Walking over rope
bridges with nothing to hold on to. That sort of
thing. Anyway, thatll have to wait for another
day, Ive a meeting to go to.

So, How Should We Protect Children?

Recently, I found myself shocked while reading
about the way some Americans are protecting
their children. Due to the number of shootings
on school campuses in the US, a small district
in Texas is allowing teachers to carry guns in
order to protect the staff and children should
there be any gun attacks on the school. The
Superintendent of the school believes its close
proximity to a busy motorway could make it a
target and, furthermore, the nearest
sheriffs ofce is a 30-minute drive
away. He also wrote on a web site,
When the federal government
started making schools gun-free
zones, thats when all of these
shootings started. The schools
trustees gave their approval and
there were no objections by the
childrens parents. Having grown
up in a country which was proud
that its police force wasnt armed,
I cant imagine a child going to
school where the teachers not only
have pens and paper but also pistols in their
bags. Unless the gun is worn in a holster under a
jacket, how can anyone be sure that it wont fall
into the hands of a child?
A few weeks later, following the nomination
of Sarah Palin for vice-president, I was reading
an article which mentioned that her ex-brother-
in-law had admitted Tasering his 10-year-old
step son. It was obvious that I was supposed
to be shocked at this but, as I didnt know the
word, I thought Id quickly Google it. What a
mistake, as I spent the next hour clicking on
links nding out all about Tasering. As you may
already know, a Taser (a registered trademark
and named after a ctional weapon: Thomas A.
Swifts Electric Rie) is an electroshock weapon
used by police forces, not only in America but
all over the world, including Germany. It is
intended to stun and immobilise people and,
hopefully, reduce the use of rearms. Among
the many things I learned whilst surng was
that three police ofcers in Miami were afraid
a 6-year-old boy would harm himself with a
piece of broken glass and so Tasered him with
a 50,000-volt Taser for his own protection. After
the incident, the parents said if theyd offered
him a piece of candy, he would have dropped
the glass instantly. There have been a number of
deaths following the use of a Taser but, despite
protests calling for its ban, the manufacturer
now sells a consumer model, including a pink
Taser marketed at women. In the US, Taser
devices arent considered rearms by the U.S.
Government and can be legally carried with-
out a permit in 43 states. I wonder how many
school teachers have one in their pocket?
However, my feeling of superiority that I
dont come from such a gun- or weapon-happy
culture was put into perspective when a stu-
dent criticised Britain. I was discussing cultural
differences with a group of students who had
recently returned from having spent a semester
abroad. One of them, who had been in London,
commented on how shocked
he was to see mothers keeping
very young children on a lead, as
you would with a dog. I knew
instantly what he meant as reins
or harnesses have been around for
a very long time. Today, there are
two basic types. For very young
children who are unsteady on their
feet, there is a harness, similar to
the one in a childs safety seat in
a car, and attached at the back is a
rein, or lead, which the parent can
hold. The practical side is that the
toddler has more freedom than when sitting in a
buggy or holding someones hand, and should
they stumble, they are then either saved by the
person holding the rein or they have both hands
free to help break their fall. The second type is
a kind of nylon ribbon with one end attached to
a childs wrist and the other end is held or at-
tached to the adults wrist. These were intended
to be used to stop young children running off or
getting lost in busy supermarkets and crowded
places, but they have grown in popularity in the
UK since the early 90s when a small child was
taken from a shopping mall and murdered. Al-
though there is a school of thought against their
use, they certainly dont raise any eyebrows in
the UK, and are generally seen to be for safety
reasons rather than for constraint. It was a lesson
for me to learn that, in the eyes of my student,
we are treating chil-
dren badly. Neverthe-
less, reins are a long
way from guns or
electric shocks!

Antique is a pretty strong word to describe
something that is a mere 40 years old, especial-
ly when you are talking about video systems.
Antique implies that something is centuries
old, which doesnt exactly apply to the video
tape collection thats cluttering up your shelf.
Or does it? To learn more about the historic
aspects of video recording, I met with Chris-
toph Blase, head of the Laboratory for Antique
Video Systems in Karlsruhe.
Hes a bit late and I pass the time in the
current YOU_ser exhibition of the Centre for
Art and Media, ZKM, the head institution of
Blases laboratory. One of the exhibits is a vin-
tage red VW camper van with a camera and a
monitor in the back, which is simply showing
the live image from the camera. Looking at
myself, I wonder where the art is and read the
description: A similar van with this setup was
parked in 1970 in a shopping street in Darm-
stadt and was used to show passers-by their
image on TV for the very rst time. Back
then, that was quite something, says Blase,
who has just come round the corner and is
now pointing to a vintage television set show-
ing a black and white video. Fortunately,
the moment was recorded and we managed
to restore the tape in our laboratory. The
tape includes mothers showing their babies,
youngsters showing off and pensioners hiding
shyly in the background. All of them are ut-
terly mesmerised by the fact that they are seeing
themselves on TV. Suddenly, I realise that,
indeed, a long time has passed between the
fascination our moving self-image once held
and its ubiquity in the time of Youtube and

webcams. Maybe the term antique isnt so
far off to describe a laboratory whose mission
is to document this fascination, especially the
fascination early video held for artists, and to
preserve it for posterity.
The Art of Recording
Christoph Blase, a former journalist and art
critic, was always interested in the possibili-
ties of video recording devices. Following the
development of art and technology closely,
he realised that the early works would soon
be lost old video recorders were rapidly
replaced by newer, better machines incompat-
ible with the old tapes. So, I started collecting
vintage video recorders, is how Blase recalls
the beginning of a passion that, in 2004, led to
the foundation of the Laboratory for Antique
Video Systems. Today, we keep around 350

Video tape recording started in 1956 with
Ampex desk-sized VRX-1000. US TV stations
used it to record shows and then transport the
4-inch wide tapes by plane across time zones
for a replay in another part of the country. In
the early sixties, video recorders nally be-
came portable sort of. Blase points to a wood-
en box in a corner about the size of a trunk:

October 1965, Nam June Paik used
such a Sony Videocorder TCV 2020 for his
rst recordings, which are today considered
to be the beginning of video art. The equip-
ment was so heavy he had to use a cab to carry
it around New York. When, in 1967, Sony
introduced the DV-2400 Video Rover Porta-
pack with a separate B/W camera and a 1/2
inch reel-to-reel tape, it started a revolution.
Although it was only for recording, the device
was not only truly portable, but also affordable
to a broader base. News stations and artists
were among the rst to adopt the system and
explore its possibilities. Another video record-
ing milestone was the U-matic, one of the rst
videocassette formats, which was showcased
by Sony in 1969 and nally introduced to the
market in 1971. Formats for home recording
like VHS or Betamax hit the market in the mid
and late seventies, ultimately turning the VCR
into the household item it is today.
Naturally, the early video art is of greatest
interest to curators. A surprising number of
tapes have survived somewhere in the corner
of a shelf or a shoe box. Unfortunately, these
decade-old tapes are in a bad shape and not t
for instant replay. The restoration of the !

imsy tapes can be almost as complex and com-
plicated as bringing a Renoir or Botticelli back
to light. Video tape restoration is a four-stage
process, explains Blase, consisting of clean-
ing, replay, analogue processing and digitalisa-
tion.
How Videos Come Back to Light
Before a tape is even allowed on one of the
precious antique video recorders, it has to be
thoroughly cleaned. The reason for that is easily
demonstrated by a video Blase shows: A video
recorder is struggling with a reluctant tape pull-
ing it over the video head, rst slowly then fast,
but constantly emitting a deathly screech. Over
time, the rear coating of the carrier dissolves and
becomes sticky. An untreated tape could be
stretched and damaged or even ruin the heads
of the video recorder, explains Blase, showing
a blackened piece of white felt from the cleaning
machine for proof.
The plain looking, custom-made cleaning
machine is one of his greatest trade secrets, and
so he quickly rushes me off to a row of reel-
to-reel video recorders. With their electronics
stripped open and extra wires, switches and po-
tentiometers dangling from them, the machines
look as if they are in dire need of repair, but the
contrary is in fact the case: All the video re-
corders have been completely refurbished down
to the last electrolytic capacitor. We sometimes
even add a few new features like tracking adjust-
ment. Although these machines all look alike,
they are not backups for one another. They
are necessary for one of the most tricky parts
of restoration the identication of the tapes
recording format.
Prior to the rst video standard, the EIAJ
standard from 1969 for half-inch tapes, each
manufacturer used their own recording
format, recalls Blase. The basic recording
principle might always be the same a tape
moves along a diagonally rotating head but
tape and head speed, rotation angle or direction
differ slightly, even among machines from the
same manufacturer. That makes identication
of the tapes format a complex trial-and-error-
process. But after restoring hundreds of tapes,
Blases team developed certain exclusion strate-
gies to quickly identify the right format and the
associated video recorder. Now the video can
be viewed for the rst time in years, sometimes
decades.
A rewarding moment exclusive to the curator
and certain vintage monitors: Unfortunately,
most modern monitors or digitalisation devices
interpret the signals from the old video record-
ers simply as noise. After all, these signals

ratory for Antique Video-

ent video formats can be

were intended for B/W TV sets. Therefore, we
have to process the signal for further use.
Unavoidable variations of tape or head speed
cause signal and synchronisation to be slightly
out of phase, which is easily tolerated by
older, analogue equipment. But modern
devices built for precise and strong signals
have a hard time locking on to these weak and
fuzzy signals. Therefore, analogue process-
ing becomes necessary. The signal is passed
through various Time Base Correctors and
Frame Synchronizers, which basically boost the
signal and synchronize it with other equip-
ment by buffering frames for release at the
precise moment. The necessary equipment,
either antique or custom-made, lls several
racks and is orchestrated via plugs and cables
on a switchboard. Each tape is different and
not only requires the right video recorder,
but also the right combination of processing
equipment, Blase says, describing his very
own art.
Tape and Tape Again
The last phase of the restoration process is as
clinical as the word digitalisation implies. A
small, inconspicuous silver box containing an
A/D converter and a brand new Macintosh
computer does the rest. The resulting video has
a surprisingly good quality, is hardly washed
out and has no noise or icker. I suspect this
to be the work of heavy digital post-process-
ing. Although mechanical damage can be a
problem, the magnetic layer of the tape hardly
degrades and is usually in pretty good shape.
Digital post-processing simply isnt necessary.
Anyway, it is completely out of the question for
curatorial reasons alone. Nevertheless we might
use it to perfectly match the digital signal to
the original analogue output, says Blase in
response to my objection, thus proving that hes
more a responsible curator than a perfection-
loving technician.
Finally, the digital data of the restored
tapes is stored on tapes! Envisioning a future
Christoph Blase brooding over the very same
tapes in forty years time, I raise an eyebrow.
Theres almost no other possibility to store the
huge amounts of uncompressed digital data,
Blase explains, because each minute of video
produces up to 1.5 gigabytes of data. Thats
around 80 GB per hour. Quickly adding up into
the terabyte range, DVDs and even hard discs
are not up to the task. Therefore, Blases team
relies on Linear Open Tape, a widely accepted
magnetic tape standard for archival storage of
large amounts of data. A sophisticated backup
strategy will further ensure that future genera-
tions can enjoy antique videos.
Surely these generations will marvel even
more at these early tapes. Even today, video
art can by trying for a layman, to say the least.
Compared to todays viewing patterns, early
video art is in the true sense of the meaning
long-winded. Many ideas like grimacing in front
of the camera or playing with the in-the-box
or window screen theme seem almost childish
today because they are copied over and over by
the Youtube generation. Antique videos have
a Renaissance in the Web 2.0 so to speak. But
it was back in the Sixties and Seventies when
these things were rst thought of. And, as in so
many cases, this rst inspirational spark is an
essential part of the art. " Matthias Meier

It has been called the strangest musical
instrument ever conceived. Unlike any other,
the theremin is never actually touched when
played. Instead, a musician controls vol-
ume and pitch using her hands to interfere
with electromagnetic elds generated by the
device. Used in the soundtrack of the 1951
science ction classic The Day the Earth Stood
Still, the theremins eerie wailings have ever
since conjured up images of sinister aliens and
creepy monsters.
What few people realize is that the ther-
emin was originally promoted by its Russian
creator Leon Theremin as a serious musical
instrument. Born in 1896, Theremins experi-
mentation with electronic instruments led him
to the Kremlin, where, in 1922, he personally
demonstrated his invention to Vladimir Lenin.
Captivated by Theremins work, Lenin granted
him permission to travel and present exhibi-
tions, telling Theremin come to see me if you
need help.
Theremins journeys took him to many of
the greatest performance halls in the world,
including the Grand Opera House in Paris
and the Royal Albert Hall in London. New
Yorks Metropolitan Opera House served as
the venue for Theremins 1928 debut in the
United States, where he remained for eleven
years. Supported by patrons, Theremin en-
joyed a life of notoriety, research, and teaching,
meeting innumerable luminaries including Al-
bert Einstein, whom he hosted for an extended
visit.
In 1938, Theremins life changed forever
when he was forcibly abducted from his Man-
hattan apartment and disappeared from the
world. Decades later a personal history as
incongruous as that of the Soviet Union would
emerge: time in a labour camp; years work-
ing for Soviet intelligence; purported recipient
of a highly prestigious Stalin medal; a return
to teach music at the Moscow Conservatory
of Music; and dismissal from the conservatory
while his musical instruments were hacked
to pieces with an axe. According to Theremin,
at the time of his dismissal, a conservatory
administrator informed him that electricity
was for electrocutions, not music.
Though there remain pockets of avid ther-
emin enthusiasts, Theremins grand vision
of an instrument as common as the violin
was never realized. Yet, his inuence on the
dawning era of electronic music was immense.
Robert Moog, creator of the Moog synthesizer
and himself one of the most inuential gures
in the evolution of electronic instruments, was
fascinated with the theremin. In a heartfelt
interview, Moog aptly summarized Theremins
impact, calling his work the biggest, fattest,
most important musical cornerstone of the
whole electronic music movement, and add-
ing, thats where it all began. !

It has been said that the great scientic disci-
plines are examples of giants standing on the
shoulders of other giants. It has also been said
that the software industry is an example of
midgets standing on the toes of other midgets.
Alan Cooper
There are two ways of constructing a software
design. One way is to make it so simple that
there are obviously no deciencies. And the other
way is to make it so complicated that there are
no obvious deciencies. C.A.R. Hoare
For a long time it puzzled me how some-
thing so expensive, so leading edge, could be
so useless. And then it occurred to me that a
computer is a stupid machine with the ability to
do incredibly smart things, while computer pro-
grammers are smart people with the ability to
do incredibly stupid things. They are, in short, a
perfect match. Bill Bryson
The best thing about a boolean is even if you are
wrong, you are only off by a bit. Anonymous
