ROLL-UP ARMADILLO

a free crochet pattern by Luna

Please do not redistribute this pattern, link to my Ravelry account instead. As for the finished armadillo, feel free to do whatever you want with it, but if you sell it, it would be nice to give me credit as designer.

2 Materials You will need small amounts of yarn in 2 colors. Any weight will do as long as you work tight enough to keep the filling from peeking out. My armadillos are made from DK yarn with a 3 mm hook and they are nicely fitting in a palm. I used 6 mm solid black eyes or 8 mm goggly eyes, but that's only a guideline, use whatever size looks cute on your creature. You will also need small amount of polyfill for stuffing. Abbreviations / you need to know how to do: start with magic ring ch - chain st - stitch sc - single crochet scdec - single crochet decrease hdc - half double crochet hdcdec - half double crochet decrease I prefer to use a version of invisible decrease - just like the invisible single crochet decrease used for amigurumi, only starting with a yarn over. See end of this pdf for detailed instructions dc - double crochet BLO work in back loops only sl st - slip stitch puff st - yarn over, insert hook in st, yarn over and pull up loop, yarn over and insert hook in same st, yarn over and pull up loop, repeat it one more time, then yarn over and pull through all 7 loops on hook

3 Most of the pattern is in half double crochet - it works up quickly and produces an interesting texture, rougher looking than single crochet, which I thought fitting for an armadillo. Head, body and tail are worked in continuous spiral, but the feet are made with joined rounds (not that there's many rounds in them). Always make the shell last, only after you've assembled the other parts, so you can make sure that it will be the right size.

Body 1) 6 sc in magic ring (6sc) 2) 2 hdc in each st around (12) 3) [hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st] 6 times (18) 4) [hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st, hdc in next st] 6 times (24) 5) hdc in each st around (24) 6) hdc in each st around (24) 7) hdc in each st around (24) 8) hdc in each st around (24) 9) [hdc in next 6 st, hdcdec] 3 times (21) 10) hdc in each st around (21) 11) [hdc in next 5 st, hdcdec] 3 times (18) 12) hdc in each st around (18) 13) [hdc in next 4 st, hdcdec] 3 times (15) Stuff the body now, as lightly as possible - use only enough fiberfill to keep its shape but not so much that it can't be folded. 14) [hdc in next 3 st, hdcdec] 3 times (12) 15) scdec 6 times (6) Finish off and use yarn end to close the remaining hole.

Head 1) 6 sc in magic ring (6 sc) 2) hdc in each st around (6) 3) [hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st] 3 times (9) 4) [hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st, hdc in next st] 3 times (12) 5) hdc in each st around (12) 6) [hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st] 6 times (18) 7) hdc in each st around (18) 8) hdc in each st around (18) If using safety eyes, this would be a good time to attach them between row 5 and 6, about 3 stitches apart. 9) [hdc in next st, hdcdec] 6 times (12) Stuff head firmly. 10) hdcdec 6 times (6) Finish off and use yarn end to close the remaining hole.

4 Ears (make 2) Chain 7. The ears will look prettier if you work in the "back bumps" of the chains, so try to do that. :) Slip st in the back of the 2nd chain from hook, sc in next ch, dc in next 3 chains, hdc in last ch. You can finish it off now to get soft, tends-to-curl ears (like my brown armadillo), or turn and slip stitch around the edge to get a firmer ear. Leave a long yarn end to sew the ear on.

Tail 1) 4 sc in magic ring 2) hdc in each st around (4) 3) [hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st] 2 times (6) 4) hdc in each st around (6) 5) [hdc in next 2 st, 2 hdc in next st] 2 times (8) 6) [hdc in next 2 st, 2 hdc in next st] 2 times, hdc in next 2 st (10) Finish off leaving a long yarn end to sew it on.

Rear legs (make 2) 1) 6 sc in magic ring, sl st to join, ch 1 2) working in back loops only: sc in next 2 st, puff st in next 3 st, sc in last st, sl st to join, finish off leaving long tail.
The 3 puff stitches will form the toes.

Front legs (make 2) 1) 6 sc in magic ring, sl st to join, ch 1 2) working in back loops only: sc in next 2 st, puff st in next 3 st, sc in last st, sl st to join, ch 1 3) working in both loops now, sc around in each st, sl st to join, finish off leaving long tail.

Sew/glue/embroider eyes if you didn't use safety eyes. A good placement would be between rows 5 & 6 about 3 stitches apart; or whatever looks cutest to you. Sew ears two rows above eyes. Sew on head (to the tapering end of body - the fatter part is the belly, of course ), tail and paws.

Shell 1) Ch 21, sc in 2nd chain from hook, sc till end (20), ch1, turn Work in back loops only from here on. 2) 3 sc, 2 hdc, 10 dc, 2 hdc, 3 sc, ch 1 and turn Before moving on, see how it fits . If you hold the ends to the body of your armadillo between the front & read legs, you should be able to pull the loop it forms around the rear/tail as well as the head. Snug fit is best, but if its too tight, you need to add a stitch or two to the starting chain and make more dc in the middle accordingly. 3-14) 3 sc, 2 hdc, 10 dc, 2 hdc, 3 sc, ch 1 and turn (dont forget to work BLO!) Time for a second check - roll up your armadillo and wrap the shell around to see if it's long enough. The ends should almost or just touch; if necessary add or remove rows. Then work one last row, all sc in both loops. I like to finish with a crab stitch border (and add one to the starting chain side too), but that is purely optional. Finish off leaving a long tail. Using this yarn end, sew along the side to the other end, then pull it tight and fix it in that position with a few back stitches. Use a piece of yarn to pull together the other side. Place the shell over your armadillo. To be able to close it, only sew it to the body at one point each side.

When you are rolling up your armadillo completely, you might have to turn the head & tail to the sides to tuck them neatly inside. The shell might look a bit stretched out when you unroll it, but no worries, it bounces back quickly.

Of course, you can add all sorts of embellishments hair, ribbons, whatever you think your armadillo would like. Have fun!

7 TUTORIAL: INVISIBLE HALF-DOUBLE CROCHET DECREASE

(pictures arent too good, but you can always google for invisible sc decrease and follow those tutorials, only starting with a yarn over)

yarn over

insert hook in front loop of 1st st

swing your hook downwards so you can then insert into the next front loop (no need to push your hook forward this much, I was just struggling with taking pics.)

insert hook in front loop of 2nd st

yarn over and pull through 2 loops (these are the front loops you picked up)

yarn over and pull through all 3 loops on hook
