ThisdocumentdefinesalldocumentsrecognisedbyGasSafeRegisterasbeingLegislative,Normative(gasstandards)andInformativereferencedocuments.
Somedocumentsareonlyavailableashardcopydocuments,butthemajorityareavailableforelectronicdownload,eitherviatheGasSafeRegisters
engineerswebsite,orfromthewebsiteoftheorganisationorbodypromotingthedocument.Insomecasesthedocumentisonlyavailableforpurchasefrom
theorganisationorarecognisedsuppler.Wherethisisthecasetheavailabilityisidentifiedalongsidethereferencetothedocument.
Hierarchy of Legislation and Standards
Inthisdocumentlist,thehierarchyofdocumentswithinthefollowingtablesisdefinedinorderofsignificance.
DetailedfirstarethoseStatutoryActs,orRegulationsthatarelegallyenforceable.ThesearefollowedbyarecognisedlistofdocumentsknownasSecondTier
documents.ThisseriesofdocumentsprovidepracticalguidanceonwaystocomplywiththefunctionalrequirementsofRegulations.Thisguidanceisnotlaw,but
providesinformationwhichiffollowedcorrectlywillensurelegalobligationshavebeenmet.Wheresomeonechoosestodepartfromthisguidancetheywill
needtoensurethatthemethodchosenprovidesequivalentorbetterstandardsofsafetytotherelevantpublishedguidance.Theguidanceprovidedwithin
appropriatesecondtierdocumentswillbeusedtoassesscompliance.
Thenexttierofdocumentsarethosegasindustrystandardswhichareaimedspecificallyattheinstallation,commissioningormaintenanceofgasequipment
(pipework, appliances etc.). These are known as Normative Documents. These documents are referred to as Gas Industry Standards. These documents in
conjunctionwithanyavailablemanufacturersinstructionswillbeusedbyGasSafeRegistertoassesscompliance.
Finally, the remaining listings within the tables provide details of links to other available information, which are considered to provide invaluable and useful
information to help enable Registered Businesses to comply with their obligations and assist them in carrying out their day to day activities. These are referred to
as Informative Documents.

WhenGasSafeRegisterinspectsworkundertakenbyregisteredgasbusinessesinGreatBritain,NorthernIrelandandtheIsleofManandGuernsey,inthe
firstinstance,itwillassessagainstmanufacturersinstallationinstructionsandwherethesearenotavailableorrelevant,againstthecriteriaasspecified
withinlegislativedocumentsandrelevantgasindustrystandards.However,itisrecognisedthatduetothedifferencesofindividuallegislationusedin
differentgeographicalareas,therewillbesomedifferencesinapplication. Whilstconductinginspections,dueregardwillbetakenoftherequirementsof
allappropriateguidance.
The hierarchy of documents are defined as follows:
