API Standards for Pressure Relieving Systems

API Standard API-520 Part I T itle Sizing, Selection, and Installation of PressureRelieving Devices in Ref ineriesPart I, Sizing and Selection Description Guide f or sizing and selection of pressure relief devices used in petroleum related industries f or equipments with maximum allowable working pressure of 15 psig greater. T he document is intended f or protection of unf ired pressure vessels and equipments against overpressure f rom operation or f ire. Pressure relief valves or rupture disks may be used independently or in combination with each other to provide the required protection against excessive pressure accumulation Guide f or installation of pressure relief devices used in petroleum related industries f or equipments with maximum allowable working pressure of 15 psig greater.

API-521

T his API standard specif ies requirements and gives guidelines f or determining overpressure causes, relieving rates f or pressure relieving and vapor depressurizing systems in petroleum related industries. T he standard also discusses selection and design of disposal systems, including such component parts as piping, vessels, f lares, and vent stacks.

API-526

T he standard covers specif ications f or f langed steel pressure relief valves (PRVs) by presenting basic requirements such as orif ice designation and area, valve size, pressure rating, materials etc. f or direct spring-loaded pressure relief valves and pilotoperated pressure relief valves. Describes methods of determining the seat tightness of metaland sof t-seated pressure relief valves (PRVs), including those of conventional, bellows, and pilot-operated designs. Describes the inspection and repair practices f or automatic pressure relieving devices commonly used in the oil and petrochemical industries. T his API standard covers pressure relief valves, pilot-operated pressure relief valves, rupture disks, and weight-loaded pressure-vacuum vents, with regards to inspection and repair. Guide f or normal and emergency vapor venting requirements f or above ground petroleum and petroleum product storage tanks, above ground and underground ref rigerated storage tanks. T he tanks discussed in the document are designed f or low pressures ranging f rom f ull vacuum through 15 psig. T his API standard discusses causes of overpressure and vacuum, venting requirements, means of venting, selection, and installation of venting devices and testing and marking of relief devices etc f or storage tanks.
