Statement of Research Experience

My research focuses on developing technologies that enable devices seamlessly integrate into a user's environment. I intend to add to computing becoming increasingly invisible, ubiquitous and intelligent by creating adaptive, networked systems that are extensions of ambient environment.

Benetech Inc. CA May 2013 Sep 2013 Implemented Tecla Accessibility (switch access to mobile devices for people with mobility impairments) in GoRead (accessible e-book reader) helping it serve an extended community of the print disabled.

Research Intern
Singapore University of Technology and Design, Aug 2012 Jan 2013 Singapore Co-developed FingerDraw, a novel drawing interface that aims to keep children connected to the physical environment. Co-developed StickEar, a multi-function input/output device that enables sound-based interactions. Paper and video submissions to AH13 and CHI13.

Research Projects

FingerDraw
Advisers: Suranga Nanayakkara and Pattie Maes Researched on how an augmented finger could fill the gap between physical and digital worlds. Designed and implemented an EyeRing based drawing interface for children to capture surroundings for their drawings.

StickEars
Adviser: Suranga Nanayakkara Developed the software interface of a wireless sensor network for sound based event triggering. Prototyped applications of remote sound monitoring and remote triggering of sound.

Dtekt (work in progress)


Adviser: Ranga Rodrigo Design and implement a plugin based video surveillance software with flexibility for extension of functionality. Develop an improved algorithm for anomaly detection in moderately dense crowds.

SpeakToMe (work in progress)


Advisers: Suranga Nanayakkara and Dileeka Dias Research on a context aware tool that assists childrens second language acquisition. Design a learning agent for interaction recognition and respond with natural language generation.
