Youth Pilgrimage to El Salvador: Francesca Rescignos Journey

In July, Francesca Rescigno traveled to our companion Diocese of El Salvador on a youth pilgrimage to visit, work, play, study, and pray with the youth and leaders there. The two dioceses have been working together for almost twenty years now and have been sponsoring these youth missions since 1997. Along with Pilar Padron, she experienced a life-changing one week adventure that she will never forget.

My trip to El Salvador was amazing and it was tons of fun! Since it was with the Episcopal Diocese we got to meet the Episcopal Bishop in El Salvador which was really cool. While we were there we learned a lot about the history of the country by visiting the sites of various massacres and different museums. On two of the days that I was there, we went out to two villages and had a "Vacation Bible School" which consisted of doing crafts with the kids there which was a lot of fun! We also spent a night up in the mountains at a hotel there. We went to a couple of sites where ERD and Habitat for Humanity are working to build houses for people that don't have any. It was really an eye-opener to see the living conditions the people live in. We learned that 2% of their country live in a house with running water, have a steady job, and can provide for their family. 20% can provide food for their family every day but might not have a place to stay, and the other 78% is living in extreme poverty and has nothing. A lot of the people there work as much as they can no matter what they have to do or what time they have to get up just so that they can get a proper education for their children They know that if they dont have an education they wont be able to get a good job to provide for themselves and their families..

Going to El Salvador made me realize how lucky we are in America even though we dont realize it. All of the kids that we met when we were there were so happy all the time even though they lived such a horrible lifestyle compared to what we have. In one of the villages we went to there were two little girls that showed us around the neighborhood that they lived in and they were so excited to tell us about the places we saw and all about their school and what they do there. I ts incredibly hard to explain how different it is from America and going to El Salvador made me realize that we really take everything for granted and dont realize what the people in other countries are going through. Little things like being able to drink the tap water or having hot water in the shower are things that they dont have in El Salvador and those are things that we dont think about how different it would be if we didnt have them. Overall my trip to El Salvador was an amazing experience and Im hoping to go back eventually maybe when my Spanish is a little bit better! Id like to also thank Zion for the monetary support to make this trip possible for me. Francesca Rescigno

Plans are underway for the annual Community Thanksgiving service, sponsored by the Rome Clergy Association. This year the service will be hosted here at Zion on Sunday, November 24th at 7:00pm. The Rev. Sam Pendergrast from First Presbyterian will be the preacher; CJ will lead the choral anthem; and the Praise Band from Rome Alliance Church will provide the rest of the music for the service. CJ will lead brief choral rehearsals on Wednesday, November 13th & 20th at 6:30pm at Zion if you are interested in participating in the combined choir. The Dr. Charles Sykes Memorial Award will be presented at this service. Names of nominees for this honor should be given to Caitlin in the office, prior to the event. High school junior or seniors, who have exhibited their loyalty to God and community, are nominated for the award. Multiple students from our area may receive this honor. The winners will be announced during the Community Service. The life and ministry of Dr. Charles Sykes was noted by his encouragement of young people, to take their places of leadership, in both church and community. Dr. Sykes served as Rector of Zion from 1954 until his retirement in 1972. He was then elected for a term on the Rome Board of Education. He and his wife, Emma, served on a number of United Way agency boards. They then endeared themselves to the residents and staff of the Stonehedge Nursing Home, while they worked together as the homes Activity Directors.

From the Organ Bench

The weather is cooling down and the leaves are changing their color as we fast approach October. Halloween and Thanksgiving decorations are already filling stores, which means Christmas shopping is not far behind. And though many of us would care not to think about it, the snowflakes will be falling soon. Choir is in full rehearsal mode now, preparing a variety of music for worship this fall. We will be starting our preparations for Advent and Christmas very soon, as it is only 9 short weeks away. Good news comes in the form of the community Thanksgiving service which Zion will be hosting this year. We are very fortunate that the Rome Alliance Church praise band has volunteered to help with the music for this service, which annually falls on the Sunday evening before Thanksgiving. In addition to the praise band, a combined choir made up of voices from all our area churches will provide a special anthem. I know Zion will serve as a great host for this event, providing much needed ecumenical fellowship. These days Im keeping busy accompanying rehearsals for Rome Community Theatres production of Annie. Its been a great pleasure to see the show come together from auditions to our fast approaching opening night. It is such a fun show to play piano for, filled with great music and great dancing. Be sure to come and see the show if you want to see Zions own Bill Moore as our nations 32 nd president, Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Performance dates are October 3-5 and 11-12 at 7:30pm and October 6 and 13 at 2:30pm. Hope to see you there! -CJ Broughton
