Observation Summary

Comment [B2]: Rules and Convention

The figured world I will be observing is the UNCC rugby team. This is an intermural sports team, the crowd varies depending on if it is a practice or a game day. At practice the crowd is the players and coaches, and game days the crowd consist of players, coaches, and fans. At practice no other activities go on because everyone is on the field but at the games many activities take place like mingling with fans and the other team also pregame meals. The rules of expected behavior is to listen to the captains and coaches, when youre running a drill be focused on what youre doing and go full speed. The only activities that are acceptable other than practicing with the team is rehabbing an injury by doing various light exercises. The forms of communication are mostly slang, jokes, and sometimes cursing, as long as you dont truly offend someone. But after practice when we are sitting around stretching the communication is more serious because we all let the captain speak. Its not always loud at practice, but when it is we are on the field communicating about where everyone needs to be or when to pass the ball. The behavior that is not accepted is physically or verbally fighting with our teammates or a coach, also being late to practice and being distracted during a drill and messing up or forgetting where you are supposed to line up. I expect to find one discourse community because everyone has a common goal of making the team better and going undefeated during the season. Bryce Murray Sep/4/13 English 1102.003

Comment [B3]: Define Figured World

Comment [B4]: Delete all the headings, just one is needed.

OBSERVATION 1: 5:30 PM- About seven of the guys show up to practice along with the five that were early, while getting geared up and ready for practice, we begin to pick on each other and telling jokes. Andy one of the teams captains shows off his new cleats to everyone. He gets compliments from everyone and a couple of jeers from Joe like I didnt know that practice was a fashion show. 5:50 PM- Now everyone is starting to arrive at practice, while Jake the club president is making sure everyone is getting certified for health insurance so we all can practice and play this season.

Comment [B5]: Put the Location of the Observation. Comment [B6]: Explain that I was practicing while observing.

When everyone seems like their ready Amro another captain and Vet gets everyone up for our 1 lap warm up around the field. After the lap we do stretches. 6:10 PM- Around this time we are walked through a new passing drill. After a few walk through reps we go full speed. At the same time we are passing the ball we are learning the new guys names. As we get into the drill some balls are dropped and we stop and do ten push-ups. Then we get back to the drill at full speed while switching directions in passing lanes. 6:15 PM- We take a water break, during the break we all talk about the upcoming season and stretch. The captains also talk about the season and what teams would be tough to beat. 6:25 PM- Everyone gets back on the field and splits into two groups for our defensive line drill, the drill consist of sprinting to one of three cones set up 25 yards from both groups and getting there and lining up on sides and making the tackle. Then we sprint back to the sideline and wait for the other group to get back. As we begin to get tired the captains encourage everyone to keep pushing and finish strong. 7:00 PM- We break again for water, this not many of us are talking because we want to catch our breath and rest up for the next drill. 7:10 PM- The teams break back into two groups one group get back to the same drill and the other starts the new offensive drill which is three of us run beside each other separated my 10 yards or less and we pass the ball back and forth and try to score on two defenders. During this drill we have one captain with us but we are still efficient because we all help each other go a good pace. 7:30 PM- Soon our coaches arrive coach Colville and Coach Tom to the field to help out, soon the coaches put us through a light slow pace tackling drill, this is a good time for us to learn how to and get better at safe tackling. This gives coach Colville and chance to get and know the new guys. 7:50 PM- We switch over to Coach Toms drill which is just running and passing in a small spot on the field just to get communication better between us all. During the drill it got kind of physical because we were all getting tired and still had to focus on tackling and as a defense not to get pushed back. The good thing is nobody is sensitive and we all didnt care if the drill got rough neither did coach. 8:15 PM- We takes our last water break just relax for a minute and jokes around a bit also with the coaches just as if they were our age and they laugh with us. 8:25 PM- We split into two teams and get ready to play against each other in a 30 minute scrimmage, one team puts on yellow jerseys so we can tell the difference. 8:30 PM- We start playing and everything is going well because we are communicating and the coaches love how both teams are playing, everyone is passing the ball well. But there are a couple of turnovers but thats to be expected. After a couple plays in, amro scores on a pass up the middle going for 30 yards. Soon after the other team scores off of a scoop and score. In the last 5 minutes we kick the ball off and our fastest guy of the team Brad takes it down the field and scores.

Comment [B7]: Add More Details

9:10 PM- We all gather around and talk about any upcoming events and the burning of our team boot call Das Boot, this cleat has been around the team for 17 years and has always be given to the MVP of each game. But sadly the boot has given away to mold and is falling apart. After that we break out and take off our cleats and head home. Bryce Murray Sep/11/13 English 1102.003

Observation 2 9/9/13 Description: This is just a small not mandatory practice; its just Amro, Ethan and I. 7:00PM: All three of us arrive to the field, while walking up the path Amro discusses his feelings about the team and the upcoming season. He says that he is mostly worried about to the young guys and getting them to understand the game and how we should have more people come out to these non-mandatory practices. Me and Ethan just keep walking and just listen because we both know this might be amros last year. 7:10PM: Soon we put on our cleats and get a quick stretch; we start off by doing a set of new drills thought to us by Amro. This focuses on how to run right and how to move horizontally and vertically without slowing down too much. Ethan didnt have any problem doing this because he is just naturally athletic. I got a hang of it after a couple reps, when amro is going again Ethan leans over to me and tells me that Amro is really his role model on the field and I feel the same way. 7:30PM: We move on to speed drills, I felt kind of self-conscience cause I know that my feet arent that fast ever since I last playing football. But Amro and Ethan encouraged me that its all good, so as the drills went on I was moving good and didnt hit any of the cones. I gain confidence and both of them pat me on the back and say good job. Thinking to myself, this is why I love this team and Im glad I can be a part of it. 7:55PM: We take a quick water break and talk about our upcoming event this weekend called Rucktoberfest. Amro explain to us that its going to be a B-side tournament so the vets wont play theyll just coach from the sidelines. 8:05PM: We finish up with three 40 yard dashes; Ethan says that we should keep doing these 40 yard dashes all season to see if we progress. Amro and I both agree that this is a good idea because we are all about self-improvement, Also this is a chance to compete with each other and make us better. As each of us take our turn we get times that we didnt expect, Amro tells us that this is just a sign that we all need to get better and that were not as good as we think we are.

8:30PM: After we finish with the 40 yard dashes we, quickly stretch and take off our cleats and put the cones away. We all tell each other bye and go off in opposite directions back to our places. Bryce Murray Sep/12/13 English 1102.003

Observation 3 9/12/13 6:58PM: I arrive late at practice because I was working on homework for my online class. When I arrive on the field, Jake tells me to run a quick warm up lap and join the team for warm ups. 7:04PM: I join the team in our quick warm up which consisted of just simply passing to the next man in a square, and we were 20 yards apart. This worked on our communication and passing skills for this upcoming tournament this weekend. We run the drill at a good slow pace to just have accurate passes. 7:35PM: We take a quick water break, and everyone is talking about how fun this weekend is going be, and we B-side players were especially excited. For all the play time we are going to get. 7:40PM: Now we jog back on the field and line up on opposite sides of the field. B-side on the left and A-side on the right. Coach Colville teaches the B-side players how to line up for a kickoff and how to protect each other and get into the ruck after someone catches the ball. 8:10PM: After running a couple kickoffs, we line up for penalty kickoffs which both teams are separated by 10 meters, and once the team with the ball kicks it we resume playing. Coach Colville teaches us the importance of not having penalties and how to score off the other teams mistakes. 8:30PM: After Coach Colville teaches about penalties and line ups we run a quick 100 percent scrimmage so we can get a taste of what the tournament will be like. This really is a good opportunity for us to get a taste of game speed and makes us better. 9:10PM We finish up and stretch out and discuss rides to the tournament on Saturday and a good number of people decide to drive, and offer rides to us young guys. This is why I love being on the team with these guys cause its like we are a family/team. After rides are squared away we break out and get ready for Saturday by resting up. Bryce Murray Sep/11/13
