WHATS THE ScUTTlEBUTT?

The U.S. Naval Institute is the proud curator and guardian of more than 500 oral histories capturing the careers and highlights of notable naval professionals, including General Jimmy Doolittle, Admiral Arleigh Burke, and Admiral Chester Nimitz. The highly acclaimed and award-winning Naval Institute Press book, Joe Rocheforts War, draws significantly from a number of these histories. Of particular note is that Rocheforts oral history was seized from the Naval Institute by the Office of Naval Intelligence upon completion in the early 1970s and not released back to the Naval Institute until the mid-1980s. Our oral history program is supported by a generous grant from the Tawani Foundation and numerous member donations. (Photo by Jen Mabe) The Naval Institute seeks tax-deductible contributions to help underwrite dozens of oral histories in varying stages of completion not limited to, but including the list below: Rear Admiral Harold J. Bernsen, USN (Ret.) Vice Admiral Thomas F. Connolly, USN (Ret.) Admiral Austin K. Doyle, USN (Ret.) Rear Admiral Edward L. Feightner, USN (Ret.) Vice Admiral Edward H. Martin, USN (Ret.) WHATS THE ScUTTlEBUTT?

This porthole cover was recovered from the USS Maine. The Maine is best known for her loss in Havana Harbor on the evening of 15 February 1898. She exploded suddenly without warning and sank quickly. Despite much speculation and investigation, the cause of her sinking and the identification of the responsible parties is still a mystery. The destruction of the Maine was the catalyst that ignited the United States to declare war on Spain on 21 April 1898. The commanding officer of the Maine was Captain Charles Dwight Sigsbee, a member of the Naval Institute Board of Control and Proceedings author. (Artifact courtesy of the U.S. Naval

First conceived in the mid-1930s, the Type VII was still in production in the closing stages of the Second World War a decade later. Subject to continuous improvement through six major variants and with around 650 completed, it was built in larger numbers than any other submarine design in history. It formed the backbone of the Kriegsmarines campaign against merchant shipping for the whole of the war, and in terms of tonnage sunk was by far the most successful U-boat type.

BREYER & SKWIOT

GERMAN CAPITAL SHIPS

of the SECOND WORLD WAR
SIEGFRIED BREYER, MIROSAW SKWIOT

Siegfried Breyer was one of Germanys bestknown naval writers. After wartime service in the Kriegesmarine, he worked on maritime publications where he was able to use his drafting skills. He drew several hundred silhouette drawings for the annual Weyers Flottentaschenbuch, and from 1958 he wrote for Soldat und Technik, the armed forces journal, and published several hundred articles on naval issues in German and international magazines. He specialized in the Soviet Navy and over the years he became one of the most renowned experts on Russian naval forces. He also produced many books, the most important of which were translated into English, including the classic Battleships and Battlecruisers 1905-1970 (1973), Battleships of the World (1980) and Soviet Warship Development (1992). Other books were co-written with his wartime friend Gerhard Koop, with the Swiss historian Jrg Meister, and with Dr. Peter Lapp. In early 2002 Breyer planned to retire from writing with his final magnum opus, entitled Schlachtschiffe und Schlachtkreuzer 1921-1997 (Battleships and Battlecruisers 1921-1997). However, bowing to pressure from Mirosaw Skwiot, he decided to prepare one last work a photo album on German capital ships in the Second World War, co-written with his younger Polish friend. Unfortunately Siegfried Breyer did not live to see this book published. He died after a prolonged illness on 22 March 2010. Mirosaw Skwiot has been interested in ships since his childhood in the Polish port city of Gdynia. Since 1979 he has worked for the Underwater Exploration Team at the Central Maritime Museum in Gdan sk aboard the MS Wodnik, the museums own ship. His tasks include exploring the wrecks, but he is also responsible for drawing the visual documentation of each of the sites. He has been involved with the AJ-Press publishing house since its foundation in 1990 and is the author of a number of monographs on German and Japanese warships of the Second World War. His work on German artillery was published in English as German Naval Guns in 2011. During his work on the Tirpitz monograph, he began corresponding with Siegfried Breyer, and suggested the idea of collaborating on a jointly-written book on German battleships. After much discussion, and a digression into publishing a Bismarck monograph, both agreed that a photo album would be the ideal approach to the subject. And so, after many years of spent on their shared hobby, they managed to assemble a unique collection of photographs depicting German capital ships of the Second World War. This book is the final fruition of that project.

WHATS THE ScUTTlEBUTT?

The Naval Institute Press is pleased to announce the saLe of teLevision rights for Circle of Treason. Rights have been purchased by Lincoln Square Productions a division of ABC News. The Assets, a limited series slated to air in 2014, will be based on the book. The show will look inside the true, personaL stories of the Soviet double-agents who were executed and the conclusion of the Cold War as told by the keepers of the nations secrets: the CIA. The series will be produced for ABC by Lincoln Square Productions.

WHAT THE PRESS SAYS ABOUT CIRCLE OF tREASON:

The authors provide intriguing insights into the background and tradecraft of a number of productive operations the CIA ran against the GRU and KGB from the 1960s through the 1980s. They also show how, when operations went wrong or were compromised by traitors, sources paid with their lives. Circle of Treason has the advantage of being written by two intelligence professionals, not by academics or journalists, and thus is an authoritative account of the Soviet sources that were providing the U.S. with invaluable information during the Cold War until Ames betrayed them. The Wall Street Journal What makes this volume interesting is that it was written by longtime CIA insiders, who saw firsthand how the agencys network inside the Soviet Union crumbled. They write authentic sketches of agents working for the CIA who were betrayed by Ames, such as Dmitriy Polyakov, a general in the GRU (Soviet military intelligence), the highest-ranking Soviet official in uniform to spy for the United States during the Cold War, who was arrested and executed after Ames identified him. This book adds an insider perspective to the bookshelf. Washington Post

Lieutenant Commander Benjamin Armstrongs 21st Century Mahan is an edited volume of lesser known essays by Alfred Thayer Mahan that illustrate why Mahans work remains relevant to the 21st century and how it can help develop strategic thinking. Although Mahan is most well-known for the classic, The Influence of Sea Power upon History, 1660 1783, his other works endure today and are presented to new generations of officers. Alfred Thayer Mahan was not only a prolific author and naval officer; he was also a strong supporter and member of the Naval Institute. The below image depicts a page from the proceedings of the U.S. Naval Institute in which Mahan calls the 11 April 1878 meeting to order. These early proceedings were the genesis of Proceedings magazine. Mahans legacy continues today within the pages of Proceedings and through the authorship of young officers such as Lieutenant Commander Armstrong. (Photo by Jen Mabe)

WHATS THE ScUTTlEBUTT?

Proceedings, the flagship magazine of the U.S. Naval Institute, offers an independent forum for discussion and debate (sometimes heated) on topics of interest to the Sea Services. As a professional journal, we have no editorial point of view but are supportive, however, of a strong national defense and of the Sea Services and their mission. We welcome constructive controversy and will publish articles that take on the conventional wisdom if the author can make the case for change. (Photo by Jen Mabe) A complete list of the Notable Naval Books of 2012 can be found in the May 2013 issue of Proceedings.
