Overview
More than a series of dates or seemingly unrelated names and events, the study of history is the examination of developing patterns and repeated themes. Next school year you will work on building the foundational skills and the contextual background necessary to recognize these patterns and themes. In Pre AP/IB World History you will be required to examine contemporary and historical events using a global perspective. This summer you will begin this process by choosing an issue of global significance and collecting five (5) related current event articles. You need to summarize and analyze these five articles and provide an annotated source citation for each. Expect that some issue research will be necessary for a thorough analysis of the articles.

Conventions
The briefs and the works cited need to be typed using 12-point font of a standard, academic style like Arial or Times New Roman. Consideration should be given to spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Likewise, organization and writing style are important. However, it is ultimately the ideas expressed in your writing that are most important.
Helpful Advice
You will be most successful with this assignment if you work on it consistently throughout the summer. If you put it off until a couple days before the start of school you will not have the time to adequately comprehend the issue or to select appropriate current event articles. Discuss this summer assignment with your parents. Your parents are your staunchest supporters. They may also be your most underutilized and underappreciated resource. Use this assignment as an opportunity to share and discuss what you are learning. Benefit from their insight and experience.
Milman, Oliver. "Great Barrier Reef: Rising turtle deaths prompt warnings of wildlife crisis." The Guardian. guardian.co.uk, 18 Aug. 2011. Web. 19 Aug. 2011, http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2011/aug/18/ wildlife-crisis-turtles-queensland>. The Guardian is notable British newspaper and is well researched. It is one of the most referred to British newspapers. Oliver Milman is an author who's written many articles for the Guardian relating to environmental issues in Australia. It's helpful because it informs me about environmental issues in Australia, but at the same time, we are not sure what will happen, because the government still needs to decide what to do to prevent turtle deaths.
History cannot give us a program for the future, but it can give us a fuller understanding of ourselves, and of our common humanity, so that we can better face the future.
