GreenWorks Rehabilitation of Cooyar Creek project

Rehabilitation works to Cooyar Creek is now complete with a huge effort put in by all parties involved. This has been a five -year GreenWorks program, initiated by Powerlink Queensland in partnership with the Lockyer Valley, Somerset, Toowoomba and South Burnett Regional Councils and Ipswich City Council. The focus was to protect and enhance the condition and connectivity of native vegetation in close proximity to Powerlinks 500kV power line easements in upper Cooyar Creek catchment. SEQ Catchments worked closely with landholders and the local Cooyar community and focus areas included riparian corridors, endangered woodland communities and dry rainforest remnants. Bruce Lord the Community Partnership Fenced riparian area along Manager for the Upper Brisbane and Stanley Cooyar Creek Catchments has been pleased with the results of the work by the community. The project has been a great success, with over 735 Ha of native vegetation restored through strategic weed control and improved grazing and fire management activities. Greening Australia employed a work crew to carry out strategic control of environmental weeds to improve the condition of riparian vegetation for approximately 12 km along Cooyar Creek. SEQ Catchments has now partnered with Toowoomba Regional Council to develop a draft Management plan for the Swinging Bridge Park in Cooyar to carry out environmental weed control over 0.7 km of riparian vegetation in Cooyar and Back Creeks.
