unique opportunity to learn the science of archaeology and to
further their knowledge of ancestral Pueblo Indian (Anasazi)
history. Most importantly, the course also provides educators
ideas and materials to develop a unit on archaeology for
engaging their students in an exciting learning experience.
At the beginning of this week, teachers become familiar with
the tools and techniques of archaeology and the fundamentals
of Pueblo Indian history. Prepared with these basics, they go
into the research laboratory to learn how to analyze and identify
artifacts; in the field, they excavate side-by-side with Crow
Canyon’s team of professional archaeologists. Field trips to the
Anasazi Heritage Center and Mesa Verde National Park round out
the week’s activities and give participants exciting opportunities
to apply newly developed skills and knowledge to an in-depth
interpretation of the cultural history of the Mesa Verde region.

awareness of the ancient past, a fresh enthusiasm for teaching,
and new educational resources to spark their students’ interest.
