Seasons Not Over Yet Typical of Northeast Ohio, the weather was up and down this summer. The short lived 90 degree temperatures and July with the above normal rainfall did cause some trying moments for Turfgrass management, but all in all it seems most clubs fared well. Its hard to believe Labor Day has just passed and marked the official close to summer, days are becoming shorter kids are back to school and the traffic at the golf course has seemed to slow down. Aeration has begun at some clubs or shortly will in the coming weeks. Time to prepare the greens for winter and the upcoming season, before you know it the Ohio Turfgrass Conference will be upon us and we all will be talking about next year and how we are preparing for the 2014 season. Maybe I am getting a little ahead of myself; let me speak in the moment of what is happening now. I have some exciting news to share with everyone, over the pass several months the Northern Ohio Golf Course Superintendent Association board and a committee consisting of Bill Prest, Frank Dobie and Dave Webner, have been working tirelessly through a process to decide the next recipient of the Mal McLaren award. As you may know, the NOGCSA has had some extraordinary members fitting this prestigious recognition, so it was very challenging to decide who was most fitting this honor. I had the honor to deliver the news to Jean Esposito, CGCS, Golf Course Superintendent of Hinckley Hills that she would be inducted into the Hall of Fame on October 9, 2013 at the Northern Ohio Golf Associations headquarters in North continued on page 4

Olmsted. Jean now sits in the company of some of the greats of the NOGCSA. The likes of John J. Spodnik, Frank Dobie, Jim Fitzgibbon, Hank Meirs, Lou Greco, Steve Gipson, Don Sweda, Robert Figurella and Terry Bonar. As I sat with Jean and gave her the good news, I could see she was completely humbled by the whole experience, she could not surmise the fact that her peers thought that much of her to be inducted in to the Hall of Fame. This is what I love about our business, Jean pictures herself just as a Golf Course Superintendent trying to survive in this market all the while helping, lending a hand, giving advice, volunteering (two times) to be on the board all for her fellow Superintendents. She is there to help in anyway. That Jean is one of the reasons the committee picked you. So mark your calendars for this great event and come out and support a great event and a great person. See You Soon, Sean P. McHugh, CGCS NOGCSA President spm@clevelandmetroparks.com

LOOK UNDER THE SURFACE TO MAINTAIN PLAYING QUALITY

By Keith Happ, director, North-Central Region August 5, 2013

The recent change in the weather has brought relief to many areas of the region. However, heavy rainfall wreaked havoc on low lying areas of fairways and on poor draining greens. It is very difficult to maintain turf quality when the soils are saturated. Add heat stress and there may be no chance to control or limit the damage. Adequate drainage is just as important as timely irrigation with respect to sound water management. Greens with poor or no internal drainage suffered during the month of July. Air drainage can relieve turf stress when the soils are saturated. Venting programs, using 3 to 8 mm solid tines, are ideal for stimulating gas exchange. This gas exchange can be critical to the turfs ability to survive during periods of soils saturation. The venting channel in the soil increases the surface area for evaporation of excess soil moisture. Increase air circulation with a fan and the effect is even more beneficial. A gentle breeze across the vented surface of a green can help to dry the soil, allow the turf to cool itself and if soil temperatures are low, stimulate root growth. When the need is urgent, venting can be performed on small areas prone to soil saturation. Do not hesitate to examine low areas of greens that do not drain well. Turf thinning and algae development can be prevented. If anaerobic soils (Black Layer) are present, vent as often as once a week before surface conditions decline. Maintain speed and smoothness by rolling after the venting process. A great deal of research has been conducted on the benefits of short term aeration relief. The turf will respond positively. Dont wait until the surface declines to act. Be proactive. Vent with standard coring units, slice, spike, HydroJect or use a deep tine venting procedure to ensure the turf survives and playability can be sustained.

Anaerobic soils have been a common problem with all of the rain experienced throughout the region. Venting the sulfide gas to the atmosphere before root decline occurs is essential.

Physical Soil Problems Require Physical Solutions

temperatures combined with excessive rainfall can result in turf death (photograph). Actually the combination of anaerobic soil conditions (lack of soil oxygen) resulting from soil saturation and high soil temperatures can kill turfgrass roots within hours and the entire plant within days. To reduce the potential from turf loss from what is basically a soil problem caused by a lack of drainage requires the installation of a subsurface and/or surface drainage. If you have suffered turf loss on your fairways or any turf area the signs are there to show you where drainage should be installed. For now, try to dry the turf out and when possible break any surface sealing (crusting) that may have occurred through coring. And seed if the temperatures remain moderate. For a more in depth explanation of what happens to turfgrasses under anaerobic soil conditions watch the video Anaerobic Soils: Impact on Root Respiration

The last few days have been a welcome break from the stress period of heat, humidity and rain that past few weeks. Signs of the stress period however are evident on a number of golf course fairways throughout Ohio. As a brief recap the week of July 15th saw high humidity, rainfall, and high soil temperatures (as was the case from the previous week). Late in the week into Monday of this week (July 22nd) several areas received significant rain within a short period of time. Standing water and saturated soils was the result of excessive rainfall. If excessive rain or flooding occurs in the spring turfgrasses are relatively tolerant due to the water and soil temperatures are low (see Impact of Flooding on Turf. However, in the summer high soil

Effective immediately; it is no longer necessary for Class C members and Associate categories to be members of GCSAA in order to be a member or apply for membership to NOGCSA. This change to the bylaws was done to encourage membership of individuals in these categories in our local association. It was determined by the board, that for these Classes, the requirement of dual membership was too large a financial burden. It is the hope of the Board that this change will encourage individuals new to our profession to join our chapter, remaining active and involved members throughout their careers.
