MODIFIED PEYOTE STITCH
Jeff Barber used a
lovely combination
of green, gold, and
copper colors in
Bead&Buttons
15th anniversary
commemorative
bead. After gathering
every green bead
I could find,
I stitched a variety
of samples, working
in right-angle
weave, herringbone,
and spiral rope.
Everything I came
up with seemed
too fussy for Jeffs
elegant bead. Finally,
I realized I could
simplify the design
by echoing Jeffs
circular theme in
my beadwork.

Peyote components
These components are made
using a slight modification
of peyote stitch. For each
new round, youll sew
through the same 110s in the
initial ring instead of sewing
through the beads added in
the previous round.
[1] On 2 ft. (61 cm) of
Fireline, pick up 24 110
seed beads, and tie them
into a ring with a square
knot (Online Basics). Sew
through the first bead again
(figure 1, ab).
[2] Pick up a 2 mm gold
bead, skip an 110 in the ring,
and, working in circular
peyote stitch (Online Basics),
sew through the next 110
(bc). Repeat around the ring

until youve gone through the
110 your thread was exiting
at the start of this step (cd).
[3] Repeat step 2, sewing
through the same 110s you
sewed through in step 2. This
will position two 2 mms side
by side around the ring
(photo a).
[4] Pick up two 150 seed
beads, a 2 x 3 mm rondelle,
and two 150s. Skip the next
110 that you sewed through
in the previous round, and
sew through the following
110 (figure 2, ab). (In figures
2 and 3, the second round
of 2 mms is not shown
because they arent visible
from the side.) Make sure
the newly added beads nestle
between the rounds of 2 mms
(photo b). Repeat around,
and sew up through the first

3 in. (7.6 cm) 20-gauge

16 in. (41 cm) 24-gauge
wire, antiqued copper
4 in. (10 cm) cable chain,
3 mm links, antiqued
copper
12 5 x 6 mm oval jump rings,
antiqued copper
Fireline 6 lb. test
beading needles, #12
chainnose pliers
roundnose pliers
wire cutters
150 in the first stitch (bc).
End the working thread and
tail (Online Basics).
[5] Repeat steps 14 11
times to make a total of 12
small rings.
[6] To begin a large ring,
repeat steps 13, but start
with 32 110s instead of 24.
Repeat five times to make a
total of six large rings.
[7] To connect the large
ring to two small ones, work
as in step 4 for one stitch
(figure 3, ab). For the next
stitch, pick up two 150s, sew
through a rondelle in a small
ring, pick up two 150s, and
complete the stitch (bc).
Work four stitches (cd). Pick
up two 150s, sew through a
rondelle in another small
ring, pick up two 150s, and
complete the stitch (de).
Work one more stitch, sew
through the first 150 in the
first stitch (ef), and end the
working thread and tail.
Repeat to connect two small
rings to each large ring.

Assembly
[1] Cut a 2-in. (5 cm) piece
of 24-gauge wire, and make
a wrapped loop (Online
Basics). String a 10 mm
mother-of-pearl coin, and
make a wrapped loop
(photo c). Repeat to make
a total of eight mother-of-
pearl (MOP) units. Make
sure one loop of two of the
units is large enough to
accommodate the S-hook
clasp. Reserve these units for
the ends of the necklace.
[2] Cut a 3-in. (7.6 cm) piece
of 20-gauge wire, and make
a plain loop (Online Basics).
String the focal bead, and
make another plain loop
(photo d).
[3] Open the top loop
(Online Basics), and attach
one loop of two MOP units.
Close the loop (photo e).
[4] Open a jump ring
(Online Basics), attach the
loop of one MOP unit and
one small ring of a peyote
component, and close the
jump ring (photo f).
[5] Use a jump ring to attach
the other end ring of the
peyote component and a
MOP unit (photo g).
[6] Repeat steps 4 and 5
twice to connect four MOP
units and three peyote
components. Use one of
the MOP units reserved in
step 1 as the final link.
[7] Repeat steps 46 on the
other side of the necklace.
[8] Attach the S-hook clasp
to the remaining loop on
each end MOP unit.
[9] Cut a 1-in. (3.8 cm)
piece of chain. Repeat twice,
but cut each piece of chain
slightly shorter than the
previous one. Open the
loop below the focal bead,
attach the three pieces of
chain, and close the loop
