(Version 6.8) Soviet Army Special Rules

"During just under four years of conflict, the Red Army moved from the brink of annihilation to the capture of Berlin. That the infantry as able to accomplish this bereft of effective anti tank eapons and only a limited supply of modern firearms is truly miraculous. But the human cost as immense. To describe the training and e!uipment of the average "oviet soldier as rudimentary is an understatement. #et the Red Army did gro in its skills throughout the ar, those men ho survived becoming e$tremely capable fighters. %reparations improved, huge batteries ere assembled to pound &erman positions and s arms of "turmovik ground assault fighters being deployed. #et underpinning all this as an acceptance of massive casualties. 'n the final analysis, the soldier as treated simply as an e$pendable munition. Tales abound of human( ave attacks, and men sent unarmed against the &ermans, told to pick up the eapons of their fallen comrades ho had preceded them. 't)s sickening to comprehend. Anyone ho turned back ould be shot do n by his o n side as a co ard. 'n such a nightmare e$istence it)s a true onder anyone survived. That they ultimately prevailed is ade!uate testament to their bravery." entrali!e" ontrol The Soviet economic and social system emphasizes centralized planning and control by the government. This applies to the army as well. Soviet generals prefer their troops to strictly obey orders, rather than think for themselves. To reflect this, the forces in a Soviet army are organized differently from other armies.... Soviet Sol"ier #eams Soviet tactics had improved dramatically from the desperate days of 1941 when whole companies went into battle unarmed and barely trained. The sheer size of the Soviet war machine and the continued high casualty rate, however, necessitated tactics relying on rigidly applied mass, rather than individual tactics. ll Soviet units, with the e!ception of officers and snipers, are manned by "Soldier Teams# $each representing two to four soldiers with identical weapons and statistics%, rather than individual soldiers. Representin$ Sol"ier #eams% &ach Soldier Team is represented in the game by a single Soviet model, lternately, you can place two or more soldiers on a single, larger base to represent teams. The choice is up to you. This rule allows a Soviet player to field a decent'sized army without resorting to purchasing hundreds of figures. &ultiple 'oun"s% Soldier Team is treated as a single model with multiple wounds $see the (arhammer 4)* main rulebook% for the purposes of the game, and is sub+ect to all rules regarding single models with multiple wounds. &ach (ound a team has counts as a single model for transporting purposes. ,n addition, use the starting number of (ounds in a unit, and the number taken for purposes of calculating starting and current strength for -eadership test purposes $e!ample. / teams have 04 wounds, so the 1)2 strength threshold would be at 10 (ounds%. #eam 'eapons% 3or game purposes, each team has only one weapon, total. The weapon carried represents the combine firepower of the entire team. 4embers of a team are armed identically, so the weapon carried by the model representing the team represents the weapon the team is armed with. 3or e!ample, a model with a rifle represents a team with a rifle, while a model with a light machine gun represents a light machinegun team with an -45. 5un crews are treated similarly, but also man their crewed weapon, in addition to firing normally. The e!act number of models in a gun crew is irrelevant, and they may simply be based on a large base with their weapon. Designers *ote+ The !uality, e!uipment, and training of "oviet front(line troops as very poor, even this late in the ar. &iving roughly three soldiers the e!uivalent of one eapon and t o attacks at the ,normal- skill level seemed an elegant solution to this, ithout resorting to using reduced .eapon "kill and Ballistic "kill for teams. Versus (nstant-)ill 'eapons% Soldier Teams are actually made up of several individuals, so weapons with a Strength rating that is twice the Soldier Team6s Toughness rating do not automatically kill teams. #emplate 'eapon Vulnera*ility% The close grouping of a Soldier Team makes them very vulnerable to all template weapons. Template weapons $flamer, blast, ordnance, etc.% cause triple the normal number of hits against teams $i.e. three hits rather than the normal one%. Soviet +or"es ,f a Soviet unit fails a 4orale test, it will immediately 7check size6. 8oll 09:, and if the score is e;ual to or less than the number of models remaining in the unit, then the unit carries on, confident in the belief that there are enough of them left to fight and win. ,f the unit is a vehicle unit, roll 19: to check size instead. <ote that the =Soviet >ordes= rule does not apply to ?inning tests, only 4orale tests.

&ass Attac,s (&o**in$ -p) @nlike other armies, Soviet units that fall below 1)2 of starting strength may not attempt to regroup in the normal way. Soviet units falling back can still attempt to regroup normally if there are enough left. 3ailing this, a Soviet unit of any size can attempt to +oin another of the same type $infantry with infantry, vehicles with vehicles%, or 7mob up6. .ro,en -nits% ,f a withdrawing unit ends up within :# of another unbroken Soviet unit of the same type $infantry with infantry, vehicles with vehicles, etc% after all moves are complete, then the withdrawing unit can attempt to +oin up with the other one. 4ake a -eadership $not 4oraleA% check for the platoon that is falling back and, if successful, the two units combine together as one. Bou may move the +oining models up to :# to get them into coherency with the rest of the unit +oined. Cnly one attempt to mob up may be made per unit, per turn. /)V0 -nits% <ote that <*D9 units are a special e!ception to this rule, in that <*D9 units may only +oin with other <*D9 units. &ass Attac, 0etails% ny Soviet unit which +oins another counts as destroyed for victory point purposes, and remains +oined with it for the rest of the game. unit which gains additional models from another unit +oining them is not worth any more victory points than it was before, and it will still use its original starting strength for all -eadership'based tests. #an, Ri"ers (#an,o"eseantni,i) -acking a designated armored transport vehicle, such as halftracks, and intensely fearful of 5erman infantry anti' tank weapons, the Soviets may do with what they had, and rode around on top of their tanks, helping to defend them in the process. ny =Tank= class vehicle that does not normally have a transport capacity may be used to transport up to 11 (ounds worth of Soviet infantry models $such as 1 Soldier Teams%, or any combination thereof. 3ollow all normal rules for &mbarking and 9isembarking as per the (arhammer 4)* rulebook. Soviet platoons may split up and be transported by more than one tank as necessary, but the tanks transporting such a split'up unit must remain within :# coherency of each other as long as they are transporting split'up infantry units. @nits may start the game mounted on tanks. Erewed weapons, T guns, mortars, etc, may not be transported by tanks. ,f a vehicle is hit while infantry are still mounted, the infantry unit aboard the tank suffers 19: attacks $SF, ?'%, per hit, regardless of the weapon used. <ote that units being transported on a Tank do receive the 4G cover save for "touching# an armored vehicle. /)V0 .loc,in$ 0etac1ments non'vehicular Soviet unit $infantry, cavalry, T gun teams, etc.% which fails a -eadership test of any kind $4orale or ?inning% within 10# of an unbroken Hlocking 9etachment, or which 3alls Hack to within 10# of an unbroken Hlocking 9etachment, will automatically be =blocked= by the blocking detachment. blocked unit automatically passes any -eadership test it failed, or automatically and immediately regroups, even if not normally able to. >owever, immediately remove 19F modelsI teams from the blocked unit, starting with the highest'ranking modelIteam, as the blocking unit restores appropriate patriotic fervor through summary e!ecution. &ach unbroken blocking detachment can block only one Soviet unit per turn $Soviet player6s choice%. 0i22icult #errain Soviet forces seemed to be more at home in, and were affected significantly less affected by 9ifficult Terrain, be it deep snow, marshes, or the rubble of bombed out cities. Soviet units always roll an e!tra dice when crossing 9ifficult Terrain and take the most favorable roll. Air Superiority (34445) Hy 1944, the Soviet @nion6s fighter regiments were able to wrest battlefield air superiority from the 5erman -uftwaffe. Soviet rmy player may spend 565 points to have total air superiority. ,f this option is taken, 19F Bak F fighters may fire once at the 8ear rmor of each enemy aircraft, immediately before they arrive on table. Bak F fighters are armed with F ! >45s $F ! >eavy 4, Strength 4, HS 0%. +eavy Artillery ,n many respects, the best arm of the Soviet army. The Soviets often employed enormous siege guns and massed artillery barrages to smash prepared enemy positions. Soviet rmy player may spend 557 points to have a Soviet rtillery 3orces blast the enemy positions before the game begins. ,f this option is taken, the Soviet army player conducts an additional ?reliminary Harrage on the enemy $in addition to any already allowed by the scenarioA%, even if not normally permitted to do so. /o om*at #eams 9ue to the nature of Soviet Soldier Teams and unit tactics, Soviet units may not use the om*at #eams rules. (n2le8i*ility

The sheer size of the Soviet army, combined with the savage purges of Stalin, meant a permanent shortage of good officers. The remaining Soviet officers lacked leadership and initiative, and reaction times suffered greatly do to the harsh and infle!ible Soviet political command system, which actually punished initiative and independent action. @nits that were out of contact with high command often +ust stopped where they were, until communications could be re'established. s a result, individual Soviet unit leadership, especially that of officers, is lower than in other armies. #ec1nolo$ically .ac,9ar"s severe lack of radios meant that forward artillery observers could generally only operate from prepared $wired% positions $with e!ceptions%, and as a result once the battle was +oined the artillery could seldom be brought to bear for close support $the Soviets rarely close artillery support%. 3ire control was practically none!istent, and the responsive artillery and aircraft support en+oyed by the 5erman troops was an impossible dream for the Soviets. ll Soviet 8eserve rolls are made at a -3, and all off'board artillery shots suffer an e!tra 5306: of scatter. entral ;lannin$ Soviet forces emphasized centralized control, rather than local initiative. Soviet units may not 3orce 4arch unless within 10# of an Cfficer $of any kind%. Soviet Ve1icle <ormations Soviet vehicles were handicapped both by their lack of tactical independence, and by a near'complete lack of vehicle radios. The few they had were obsolete and unreliable. ll Soviet vehicle s;uadrons, tank platoons, etc. operate as a vehicle unit, as described in the (arhammer 4)* rulebook. >owever, they only need to be within := of each other after they have moved, rather than 0= as is normally the case. (=;#(=/AL) +en an" 1ic,s > .lin" &an's .lu22 Soviet tank losses $1:,)))% during ((0 were unparalleled. The 8ed rmy lost more tanks than all any other army ever made. The only way they could keep up with such losses was to rush tank crews into battle with minimal training. Eombined with a lack of radios, reliance on visible flag signals, a preference for going into battle with all hatches closed, and the generally poor crew visibility of many Soviet tank designs, and the result was Soviet tanks blindly following their commander, often oblivious to targets on their flank and rear. 5ermans called this game of blindly following the leader =>en and Ehicks=, or worse, =Hlind 4anJs Hluff=. (hen the unit moves at speed, the tank commanders are so focused on keeping formation they cannot locate targets at the same time. -ikewise, it was difficult for part of the unit to maneuver while the others remained stationary. Eramped and overworked, all attention is focused forward, with little awareness of what is happening on the sides or rear of the vehicle. ny Soviet player may elect to use this C?T,C< - rule. ,f so, it has the following effects. 1% Soviet armored vehicles that are part of a s;uadron where any vehicle in the s;uadron moved more than := may not shoot at all that turn. 0% Soviet vehicles that are not Cpen'Topped are treated as having a Hallistic Skill of .S 6 when firing at targets outside of the hullJs frontal arc $9) degrees%. F% The point cost of all vehicles in the army is reduced to ?5@ of normal, rounded up to the nearest 1 point increment. &otori!e" (n2antry (&otostrel, ovaya) .attalions The Soviet @nion had very few trucks at their disposal, and those they had were mostly lend'lease @S ones which were reserved for hauling supplies to the front'line units. Cnly Soviet 4otorized ,nfantry were authorized any organic transportation, and these were few and far between. ny 1 Soviet Hattalion may upgrade to &otori!e" at no cost. ll units in a 4otorized Hattalion with a transport option listed must purchase it, at the cost given, and only 4otorized battalions may take transport options. ,n addition, any units in a 4otorized Hattalion may upgrade their Trucks to -end'-ease 41 >alftracks for GF) points each, andIor their 5 K Leeps to -end'-ease 4F (hite Scout Ears for G01 points each. Auar"s .attalions @nits that showed bravery and military prowess were awarded the title of 5uards. These re'designated units were typically used in the most difficult operations and in the hardest fighting. Bou may upgrade the entire army to Auar"s, which increases the -eadership of all models in the army by 53 L", at a cost of 537 points for each and every non'vehicle unit in the army, no matter the size or type. The entire army must be upgraded together. <ote that <*D9 units receive no benefit from the 5uards upgrade, as <*D9 units are already better than 5uards. ;arac1ute .attalions The Soviet @nion formed several parachute corps of three parachute brigades each. They were composed of hand' picked troops, but never performed a parachute drop, ending up deployed as ground troops. ?arachute Hattalions

are treated as Auar"s in all respects, at a cost of 537 points for each and every non'vehicle unit in the army, no matter the size or type.

The Soviet rmy list is ;uite different from the other army lists, using "teams# as opposed to individual models $one model represents several%. This was done to make it easier for the Soviet player to field large numbers of infantry without resorting to purchasing vast numbers of models, and to reflect the general lack of tactical independence and individual skillItraining found in Soviet forces. (arhammer 4)* players might like to envision similar "horde# armies made up of clusters of cheap, e!pendable units, such as ripper swarms or nurglings. s with those, the characteristics of Soviet teams reflect the aggregate characteristics of the team, rather than those of the individuals making up the team. Soviet #roop Duality Soviet tank crews were chosen from amongst the best and brightest the Soviet army had to offer, and were among the only forces in the Soviet army that were fully trained $hence the HS of F%. 4ost of these forces were assigned to specialized Tank Eorps, 5uards, or Shock units. Cn the other hand, soldiers in front line infantry units, such as rifle companies, received the least training $typically as little as 0 weeksA%, and were unlikely to live long enough to get better. >owever, even this was much better than early in the war, when entire companies of unarmed men would march off to their deaths. #ou can obtain updated versions of this and other Army >ists from the follo ing http+??games.groups.yahoo.com?group?...@alternaterules?files? eb location+
