Lesson Objective(s): 1. Students will be able to identify the stressed syllable of a word. 2. Students will be able to evaluate a word in Spanish and identify any letter that may need a written accent mark. 3. Students will be able to use ALT Codes to appropriately type accented characters in Microsoft Word. Introduce the Learning Activity: 1. The teacher will ask students to identify the difference between the word object / b.dekt/ and the word object /b.dekt/. The teacher will then lead a discussion asking students to define the concept of a stressed accent. 2. The teacher will tell students that Spanish avoids such confusion at least as it pertains to pronunciation through its use of the written accent mark. Provide Information: 1. The teacher will explain and write the rules for the syllable accentuation and written marks in Spanish on the dry-erase board. Provide Practice: 1. The students will use the online game The Magic Harp to identify the stressed syllables of various words in English. 2. The teacher will write various Spanish word on the board separated into syllables, and ask students to identify whether or not the word needs a written accent mark. 3. Students will use a Sporcle game to identify the letters of various Spanish words that need a written accent mark. 4. The students will use a Microsoft Word Document prepared with words in Spanish that may or may not need a written accent to practice implementing the rules for the written accent.

Provide Knowledge of Results: 1. The teacher will verbally indicate a students success or need for further review while sharing results on the Sporcle activity as a class, as well as when reviewing the worksheet activity together as a class. Review the Activity: 1. While reviewing the worksheet activity, the teacher will ask students to explain their answers, which will create the need for them to restate the rules learned. Method of Assessment: 1. Students will be informed that a section involving the correct use of the written accent mark will be on the upcoming unit exam. 2. The students will be informed that the essays that will be assigned next week will be graded in part based on their correct use of the written accent, and so they should learn the ALT Codes well.
