Avenue of Honour
Lauren and Chris may have a more secure roof over their heads now they are married, but on the day of their wedding local photographer Natasha Hurst captured the couple underneath a magnicent canopy of elm trees in the Avenue of Honour. We were fortunate there was not much trafc this day and a quick couple of shots captured the moment, she said. Lauren Prout is the daughter of Colin and Heather Prout of Bacchus Marsh, and Chris Barker is the son of Anthony and Gillian Barker, also of Bacchus Marsh. Attending Lauren and Chris were bridesmaids Lee Brockland, Rebecca Prout and Laura Porter. Flower girls were Willow and Lexie Prout. The couple married on Friday 25 October 2013 and celebrated with a reception at Maddingley Park clubrooms with cherished family and friends.

Marilyns nature wins national award

The beautiful Leaf Moth from Forrest in the Otway Ranges Photo - Dean Hewish A DARLEY woman has been awarded for her work recording the regions diverse wildlife. Marilyn Hewish received the Australian Natural History Medallion at the Field Naturalists Club of Victoria in Blackburn on November 11 for decades of work documenting ora and fauna. The Geelong Field Naturalists Club told me I had been nominated back in May, she said. I knew I was in the running but didnt expect to get it. Mrs Hewish was the senior author of 2006 book Birds of the Long Forest 18892005, which detailed 174 local species and involved sorting 24 years of work by 60 people. She is now working on volumes 7 and 8 of the series Moths of Victoria. Each book/disk set will have the equivalent of 450 pages of

I swore after the birds book I would never do another book again but that didnt last long and here I am! she said. There are a heck of a lot of moths ten times more than the butteries and they have a different wing structure. People think moths are small, brown and boring - but theyre all colours. Theyre stunning. Some of them are absolutely gorgeous. It blows you away. Moths can also be quite large. The batwing moth in the Anglesea area has a wingspan 15 to 20cm across. Mrs Hewish has written countless articles, organised bird counts and eld trips. She also takes part in Museum Victoria Bioscan surveys and is one of two volunteers at the Melbourne Museum helping to sort their collection of

The samples are from all over the world some are quite fragile and their condition depends on who collected them and how they were stored. We have some in great shape from the late 1800s. Mrs Hewish said her interest in natural history began with amateur astronomy as a teenager. From there she moved onto Australian orchids and a career as a medical scientist dealing with viruses. One day I remember seeing an Eastern Spinebill in my garden and was absolutely amazed at how beautiful it was so I moved onto birds. Mrs Hewish has done work for Birds Australia as well as the Entomological (insect) Society of Victoria.

Left to right, Principal Mr. Andrew Neal, School Council Member Ms Moira Berry, Deputy Principal Head of Junior School Mrs Elizabeth ODea and Life Member of BMG Mr Peter ODea. Bacchus Marsh Grammar has just turned 25 and its released a book that covers a couple of subjects at once. Titled Celebrate, the anniversary cookbook also features a section on growing your own food, dishes from around the world, student art, school history and photos over time. Food Technology teachers Jacqui Huxtable and Belinda Lipscombe have spent most of 2013 compiling the book, which was formally launched on November 15. We asked for recipes from school families and the students themselves, Ms Huxtable said. One Year 10 student who is a budding chef submitted a lot of his own recipes. Youll nd everything in the book from Sticky Date Pudding to Greek biscuits and Maltese Pasta Bakes. We also asked people to explain what that dish meant to them and why it was important. Really its a reection of the school community through cooking. Moorabool eateries The Plough, Angelos Bakery and Baby Black support hospitality students from the school and have also submitted recipes for the hardcover coffee-table style book. Bacchus Marsh Grammar began in February 1988 with just three classrooms. It now has over 1500 students and has expanded its buildings and grounds several times. Ms Huxtable said home economics was not offered from the start, but was now compulsory in Years 7 and 8 and available as an elective up to Year 12. Celebrate is available for $45 at Bacchus Marsh Grammar or via www. bmg.vic.edu.au and can be collected from the school admin ofce.

SANTA PHOTOS
Santa photos will be available when Santa is visiting. This year we are offering customers the opportunity to take your own Santa Photo in our beautifully decorated Santa Cave located between Aldi and Bacchus Beds and Linen.

$1m for roads

MOORABOOL COUNCIL will get $1 million from the Napthine Government for roads and bridges. Moorabool has 29,500 residents and an area 2110 sq km. Geelong-based Western Victoria Upper House Liberal MP David Koch said Moorabools $1 million would go towards improvements to key roads in Bacchus Marsh, Darley, Elaine and Millbrook. The release dated November 20 also quoted Mayor Pat Toohey, who had not been in that position since October 30. The fund provides $1 million per council for 40 non-metropolitan Local Government areas. Queenscliffe will use its $1 million to improve drainage and pavement along Bay Rd one of its main thoroughfares as well as several new and upgraded roundabouts.

By Kate Taylor Locals are set to have a bloomin good time at this years annual Ballan Flower Show. The event raises money for the Ballan Red Cross and, as Vice president Mary Williams points out, now is the time to give. I think with whats happening at the moment in the Philippines, we need all the money we can get, she said. For just a $20 entry fee, visitors to the show are getting value for their donated dollars with a luncheon followed by tea and coffee, as well as viewing the ower show exhibitions and the announcement of the prizes. People enter into different sections, and we have someone come and judge them, and there are prizes and certicates in each section. We also have a silver plate which is for the best rose. Our categories include full bloom, one rose bud, collection of roses, and then we also have a novice oral art section and thats for those who have never won a rst prize at any show and they can do an arrangement of fresh owers,

The best of breed

By Kate Taylor A pup from Mornington has won rst place at the Victorian Mini Foxie Association Show, held at Elaine. The day very nearly turned to disaster for Kelly Sutton, her two daughters and twoand-a-half year old foxie Asha as they struggled to nd the Elaine Recreation Reserve. We got lost I just followed the NavMan and we got lost. We only made it there in time for the very last category, she said. Asha won the Best of Breed Novice Award at what was her rst ever dog show, held on Sunday 10 November just 10 weeks after Asha gave birth to her rst litter of puppies. I was amazed, Kelly said. We were going to enter two of the puppies in the show, but we got there too late.

Locals to the rescue

THE Bike Education Trailer is now making its way around Moorabool and Hepburn shires thanks to overwhelming community support. Moorabool Leading Senior Constable and Youth Resource Ofcer Jim Ross said it was inspiring to see the level of community support following the theft of one of the bike-ed trailers earlier this year. Luckily Steves Tyre Centre allowed us to garage the remaining trailer at his workshop, Ldg Snr Const Ross said. We have very limited space at the police station- certainly no room for a large trailer, the theft also put a strain on the budgetbut again the community helped us out. He said Rossco Engineering generously did not charge for tting out the remaining trailer with bike racks and securing a toolbox. The Bike Education Trailer was part of a road safety education package delivered to primary school students in order to foster a solid understanding of road trafc environment and road rules. It aims to equip young kids with decision-making

Tenor to appear with Orchestra

By Kate Taylor Its beginning to feel a lot like Christmas and the Moorabool Light Orchestra is helping spread the spirit with a special Christmas concert. With the theme Sounds of Christmas from around the World, the event will feature celebrated Melbourneborn tenor Robert Barbaro. Being held at the Bacchus Marsh Grammar School Auditorium/Gymnasium on Sunday 1 December from 2pm, Mr Barbaros performance is set to impress the audience. Orchestra Musical Director Barry Wilkins said it was quite a coup to attract Robert to perform as he is in much demand and is currently also appearing in the Australia Opera production of The Ring Cycle at the Arts Centre Melbourne. For 2013 Robert has been awarded the Opera Society Vocal Scholarship with the Dame Nellie Melba Opera Trust. He has performed throughout Australia in a number of music theatre and operatic productions, concerts, variety shows, festivals & community, private and charity events as well as winning various sections for singing competitions at Eisteddfods across Australia. At the MLO concert in Bacchus Marsh, Robert will present a variety of Christmas music with piano accompaniment, as well as some exciting numbers with the Moorabool Light Orchestra, he said. At the event, the 40 members of the orchestra will focus on a variety of Christmas music - Ancient & Modern - as well as some new and exciting contemporary orchestrations, breathing new life into some old Christmas favourites. The guest compere will be Radio 3BA 102.3 FM presenter Frank Clark. Evac exercise commended

By Kate Taylor An evacuation exercise held in Blackwood last year has earned Moorabool Shire Council recognition in the Resilient Australia Awards. Along with partners, Council was awarded a Judges Commendation in the Local Government sector. The award was presented to representatives from Council and the CFA at a ceremony in Melbourne on 18 November, by Minister for Police and Emergency Services and Bushre Response Kim Wells. Council partnered with Victoria Police and the Country Fire Authority, supported by Ambulance Victoria, Australian Red Cross, DEPI, DHS, IFMP, VicSES and VicRoads to organise and conduct the Blackwood Evacuation Exercise on 9 December last year. A physical evacuation of the township of Blackwood and surrounds was undertaken using warning systems including Community Alert Sirens and the Emergency Alert telephone warning system, enabling approximately 80 emergency service personnel to undertake training in the use of various aspects of evacuation warning methods such as door knocking and service vehicle sirens to alert community members of a threat and to take action. Extensive community consultation to support the exercise was undertaken and an emergency services expo was held in conjunction with the exercise. Moorabool Mayor Paul Tatchell said he was thrilled that the efforts of the working group, volunteers and the community had been recognised at the Resilient Australia Awards. This award recognises the support provided by all agencies to this exercise and the communities of Blackwood, Dales Creek, Greendale and surrounds that tested their personal plans on the day. Everyone involved did a wonderful job and this commendation is thoroughly deserved.

Captain of the Blackwood CFA brigade Ian Stewart (third left) with his crew. Photo Helen Tatchell cipients were Brian Allison, Dale Barry, Joan Chapman, Andrew Christie, Lindsay Devlin, Alan Gorman, Alfred Pantalleresco and Paul Williams. Grampians Region Personnel who received the medal were Tony Brady, Archie Conroy, Geoffrey Gray, Donna Green, Gavin Hope, Sherene Murnier, Wayne Rigg and Alfred Mason. Member for Western Victoria David Koch congratulated the award recipients, at the ceremony on Sunday 10 November, on receiving the national honour. Members from the Grampians Region provided sustained service and support and protected communities during a period of great destruction and loss. These award recipients fought bravely to protect lives and property during an extremely long and difcult re campaign and I want to commend them for their courage and commitment.

Environmental Opinion
.equipment by 32%. Its thinking that comes from working in the real world, not just the nance world. It was the words real world that caught my attention. There was nothing of the real world in the picture. What do they mean by real world? It seems to me the real world is butteries, ants, our links to our local bioregion, kids, dogs, the ue, our broccoli patch, oxygen, nitrogen and the like. We can talk all we want to about inventories, or business complexity, or global expertise but if we stop taking in oxygen or if the bioregion around us goes we go with it. The real world is wonderful, breathtaking, at times full of love, at times violent. It is a sunrise and sunset. The real world is in danger. The real world is threatened. The real world is the only world that matters. The real world is the world of the Philippines or Italy, which recently had yet another one in a hundred years event as towns were ooded, and lives lost. I will let Fatima Measham (Eureka Street, Vol 23 No 22) speak. Fatima says in My Philippines typhoon fury, I have childhood memories of playing in the rain. In the tropics, the rain falls warm and soft. We would muck around, wet as sh, laughing into the sky to catch the drops. I spent two-thirds of my life in the Philippines and recall no storms or typhoons ever having the sort of impact that Washi (Typhoon of 2011) had on Mindanao. In the wake of Washi, what once lled me with joy instead lls children with fear. But the truth is that whatever adaptive measures may be taken, the intensity and frequency of typhoons have worsened. This is not debatable. This is reality. Excluding super typhoon Haiyan (the most recent horrible typhoon), ve of the 10 deadliest cyclones in the Philippines occurred in the past decade: Winnie in 2004, Durian in 2006, Fengshen in 2008, Washi in 2011 and Bopha in 2012. Notice the yearly succession. Then think about the fact that Washi, Bopha and Haiyan also broke local and international records within a year of each other.

The Age recently had a full page ad for a company. It was a photo of three men all smiling, two standing and one seated, in an ofce that had, what looked like, a digital wall. The furniture was modern and the lighting subdued. The wording across the top of the page read, At (I will leave out the names of the big businesses and you can insert any you would like) we understand the business complexity of . and .Australia. And yet the mine owners continue to export coal from Australia. The Victorian government is talking of developing a massive port in, either Corner Inlet (next to Wilsons Prom), Westernport Bay (next to Phillip Island) or McGaurans Beach (part of Ninety Mile Beach) for what is planned to be the worlds biggest brown coal export industry. These new brown coal export plans are estimated to generate 53 times Australias annual emissions and four times Chinas when the brown coal is burnt overseas. If these damaging coal export plans go ahead one of these three special places will be industrialised, the environment destroyed, the local communities, shing and agricultural businesses losing their livelihoods and homes, and much wildlife will lose their homes too. And what do we say to the people of the Philippines as we allow this to happen? Can we say that it wasnt us; it was the coal business, or the corporations, or, the state government or the federal government, or someone else. Or can we say that we tried to do something. We took action. We . What is your opinion? Next Moorabool Environment Group (MEG) meeting: TONIGHT - Tuesday 26th November 7.30pm End of year BBQ, 131 Hallets Way, Darley. All Welcome

Secretary of the CFMEU trying to muscle his partner Emma Walters into the newly created seat of Werribee in the Legislative Assembly. We will see more of this Union muscle being strategically placed in the halls of Parliament as they struggle to gain relevance and signicance but use the Parliament through their MPs to exert power over upcoming legislation that threatens their existence. A dangerous power play at work that has signicant ramications to the Victorian community. Simon Ramsay Member for Western Victoria Dear Editor, The Moorabool Shire Councils Key Priority Projects advocacy document, published in June 2013 makes for interesting reading. The Council is to be congratulated on the successful implementing of their many projects, now and for the future growth of the Moorabool Shire. The section Environment Projects includes a current issue wind farms. I wish to quote from the document the following concerns Council discusses. the council has concerns regarding the impacts on residents quiet enjoyment of their propertiesthe social impact of wind energy facilities with particular emphasis on the fracturing of local communities the current decision making processes fail to take into account the impact on property values and the potential for impacts on human health resulting from special audible characteristics. It is all very well for Council to express these concerns but are they as a local government body going to be able to act in any way that will prevent the people of the shire from being adversely affected? Recognition of potential problems is only the rst step in protecting the ratepayers. The last paragraph of the document refers to infrastructure and property damage during construction stage and the need for appropriate compensation for any loss from the development of a wind farm. Have these needs been taken into consideration when the permit was approved? Angela Kearns Mt Egerton

Barry Riley Ballan Dear Editor, It is interesting to note the Union power play at the moment, whereby militant Unions like the CFMEU who have constantly broken the law with their industrial disputes and challenged the Napthine Government in the Supreme Court, are now trying to inltrate the Parliament of Victoria by parachuting union ofcials into the Legislative Council as Members of Parliament. Only recently we saw Ceasar Melham, past Secretary of the Australian Workers Union given Dear Editor, LOLLYGATE (Letters MN 5 Nov 2013) We mustnt spoil the fun no matter what the cost! A person tries to alert the community about a danger that exists about unhealthy lollies being distributed at Christmas time by ries on a re truck. The totally unrealistic reaction has been that the fun times must not be disrupted even though a child could die. This person was not crying Wolf! There was no attack on any re brigade organisation, and in fact the Gordon CFA was given credit for adopting the sensible solution of throwing out healthy lollies. No problem at all if this is done! I am disgusted at the baying the seat of Eastern Metropolitan, vacated by Martin Pakula. Near New Family Home In Top Location

Rental update

Enzo Raimondo CEO, REIV

While the rentals vacancy rate was slightly higher in regional Victoria last month, the differences between towns are so marked that whether or not the data brings good news depends where you are. The overall regional rate was 2.9 per cent, up from 2.7 per cent in September. That bucked the trend until September it had fallen for four consecutive months from Mays high of 4.1 per cent. The vacancy rate was just 1.9 per cent in Bendigo and Loddon, where the new Bendigo Hospital is tipped to create an even greater squeeze, pushing up yields and rental returns. Median house rental prices in Bendigo were stable at $301 per week in October, the same as in September, although that had been an increase on the August gure of $281. Wodonga, Shepparton, Goulburn, Ballarat, and the Central Highlands also recorded low rental vacancy rates 2.2 per cent in each centre was bad news for renters, but good news for investors looking to buy to let. Ballarats median house rental prices rose $10 per week in October to $280. But in Warrnambool and the Western district the rate was 4.5 per cent, while it was 5.3 per cent in the Latrobe Valley and South and West Gippsland. Although still high, this was actually good news for investors because it is trending lower, from Julys high of 6.7 per cent. In Geelong and the Barwon region Octobers rental vacancy rate was 3.7 per cent, down from 4.9 per cent in September and well below the years high of 6.7 per cent recorded in May. The median house rent in Geelong was $338 in October, down $2 per week in September. Investors are increasingly active in the Melbourne housing market and the latest Australian Bureau of Statistics housing nance data showed a rise in the value of investment housing loans nationally up by 5.2 per cent, seasonally adjusted, in September. Investors looking to buy in regional Victoria should carefully study their individual target markets as their yields, rental return and ease of nding tenants will vary greatly across the state.

Ballan Tennis
Juniors The B2, C4 and C5 teams did not get to play last weekend due to the rain. After sweeping the courts at Ballan they were playable, so both C2 Black and C3 were able to start their matches. C2 Black got off to a great start with Owen and Nick winning 6 0. With some great serving from Nick and good rally shots from Owen they did not give their opponents a chance. Mitchell and Oscar played a very close set, but in the end Meredith Red got the break they needed to win the set 4 6. The skies turned grey and within a few games it was raining and the team match was abandoned. The rst two sets for the C3 were played with some great shots against their opponents from Navigators. Ben and Ethan worked well together, but just could not get over the line, losing 4 6. In the other set Mackinnon and Adam also showed their skills and teamwork. But before the match was nished it was declared a wash out. The only Ballan team to nish their match was C2 Blue, playing away at Meredith.

Seniors Yes, no, maybe. That was how the teams at Buninyong Tennis Centre started their afternoon matches. The Ballan A3 side was up against Goldelds/Mt Helen and were on and off the court due to the downpours, in their rst four sets. Kristy Tatchell and Samantha Lee had a great rst up ladies win 8/5 with Helen Tatchell and Samantha up 3/1 before the day was declared a wash out. Next Week Ballan A3 v Miners Rest (Miners Rest) Results - Week ending Sat 23 November Wednesday - Stableford Winner Chris Tudor 34, R/u Jimmy Walsh 32. Magpie -14th Jimmy Walsh. Saturday - Par. Winner Peter Clifford (19) 37 points on c/b from Bob Arklay (10) 37. NTPs - 2nd Jimmy Walsh, 12th Chris Tudor, 15th Frank Raffael. Magpies - 1st Les Martin, 14th Shane Harrison.

In the rst set Eva and Chantelle won 6-5. This was an absolutely astonishing come back from 5-0 by the girls. In the second set Emily and Molly worked in complete unison to bag an easy win, 6 2. Ballan 3/19 def Meredith Maroon 1/14. Juniors - Next week B2 v Napoleons (Napoleons) C2 Black v Meredith Maroon (Meredith) C2 Blue v Buninyong (Ballan) C3 v Ross Creek (Ballan) C4 v Napoleons (Ballan) C5 v Napoleons (BTC)

Avenue was leading on all rinks (Bill Hawkens rink was 26-5 up) when thegame was called to a halt due to the incessant rain.Arguably the decision waspremature, however Avenue didgain 9 points for the day. Division 5 travelled to Victoria and came away with full points. Led strongly by Peter Thisthlewaites rink (24 shots up) and Lyn Robinsons rink 14-75 shots up), Avenue won all rinks and gained a valuable 18 points for their efforts. Final score - Avenue 103 def Victoria 49.25 Division 9 unfortunately was awarded another walkover, making it four walkovers from eight games. In the Midweek pennant Division 1s charge to the nals was given a slight setback with a 13 shot loss to a strong Central Wendouree side, which incidentally has won the nal in each of the past two seasons. Although Avenue lost all three rinks, the margins were only a few shots at most and will give the team some condence in a shootout against Daylesford this week in a battle for fourth spot. Division 3 continued their good form with a 10 shot win over Linton. The two winning rinks for Avenue were Brenda Robinsons rink (16 shots) and Hazel Treloars rink (2 shots) The win propels the side into fourth spot on the ladder with an important match against second placed Invermay this week.

In what only could be described as very non-bowling type weather, Avenue Bowling Club participated in Round 8 of the weekend BDBD Bowls competition Premier Division journeyed to Webbcona seeking to consolidate their position after a 38 shot win the week before, however things did not go as planned with Avenue losing by 31 shots.Good wins by Glenn Sargents rink (4 shots) and Darren Fletchers rink (2 shots) were not enough to get Avenue across the line.Unfortunately, Sam Shannahans rinksuffered a rare loss going down by 22 shots, whilst Martin Sheas rink also found thegoing tough. Bacchus Marsh Little Athletics

The changing weather conditions did not deter Bacchus Marsh Little Athletics from completing their weekly scheduled program last Saturday. Three new records were set for the meet. Under 15 athlete, Lucas Shugg (Blues) ran a consistently paced race in the 1500m to break a long standing 20 year old record by over 4 secs, setting a new time of 4:27.31 mins. In the same event Jayden Bullard (Blues) broke the Under 16 1500m record, running 5:08.75 mins. Jack Shaw (Eagles) bettered his own Under 16 300m Hurdles record in a new record time of 44.29 secs. Lord St Bowls
Inclement weather threatened to wash out what proved to be a magnicent match in Division 1 against Kyneton. Breathing down Bacchus Marshs neck on the ladder before the weekend, the Red legs continued to do that during the game. With showers on and off an early tea was taken, the scoreboard showing 36 apiece. After tea, the match ebbed and owed, meandering its way towards a thrilling nish in between showers. Alan Maher was the rst rink nished, down 22-24. Barry Steinholdts rink then lost 16-24, with Dylan Filuk snagging 2 shots on his last end to win narrowly, 21-20. So it came down to Justin Webster all square overall and 2 down on the head, Webster drew the absolute to roaring cheers and a crucial 1 shot victory 87-86, his own rink winning 28-18 after being down 2-11 early on. Division 2 travelled to Kyneton, and it was a tough day, with only one rink winning, Sue Banks by 11 shots, and going down overall by 40 shots. The loss, although disappointing, doesnt upset the Marshs nals hopes, as they are still only ve points out of the top four. Division 3 was washed out at Gisborne after only a few ends were played.
