TO ALL PARISHIONERS
Christmas don't forget the baby!
There was an incident that happened in a local church some years ago. In the busy run up to Christmas some school children were gathered on the chancel steps in the main body of the church for the final dress rehearsal of their nativity play. During the performance a nervous teacher directing the production from the back of the church hung on every word and action. As the drama made its faltering way to a climax Mary and Joseph appeared suddenly paralysed and struck dumb as they stood in front of the makeshift stable staring into an empty crib. Breaking the silence the director shouted vainly 'Where's the baby?' Mary leaned over and peered into the crib, she started to rummage in the straw, but no baby appeared; pausing she looked up bereft and speechless. 'Where's the baby?' repeated the director. Mary looked close to tears, there was no baby. In distraught tones the director gave the inevitable and desperate final instruction, 'When it comes to the performance, remember, it's very important, don't forget the baby!' As we rush around preparing for Christmas it's very easy to get distracted by the pull of the world around us. If we choose to let that happen then it is very likely that we will forget the baby. And the baby is very important! So what's it all about? A child born in a stable proclaimed Prince of Peace. He was acknowledged as the Son of God Emmanuel (which means God is with us). A figure who frightened powerful kings. This person this baby - changed the world. Yet he was born to a poor family forced to shelter in the poorest of conditions and recognised first by the shepherds the lowest in society. What does that say to us about the kind of God that is being revealed to us in the person of Jesus Christ? The Christmas story reveals a God who is not interested in the pomposity of the world. A God who identifies with us in our vulnerability. A God who is actually closer to us than we think! It is here through this baby that the story of God's love for us unfolds. The Christmas story is full of hope and promise and love for every single one of us can you believe it? And is it true? And is it true? This most tremendous tale of all Seen in a stained glass window's hue A baby in an ox's stall? The maker of the stars and sea Become a child on earth for me? (John Betjeman) This Christmas let the true meaning of this season shine through as we greet the Christ child again and sing our carols of welcome. I wish you all a peaceful, joyful, light filled, Christ filled Christmas. With much love Revd. Jane

ASHWICKEN, LEZIATE & BAWSEY NEWS

Leziate WI October meeting
There were 23 members and visitors present for Stewart South's wonderful talk about the birds he has encountered as a member of the Nar Valley Ornithological Society. The photos on the slide show were taken by his friend, Alan Hale, and Stewart talked about each bird shown. They were so colourful. I didn't know there were so many different birds around waders, coots, seagulls, waxwings, bullfinch, goldcrests, bitterns, lapwings, kestrels, robins, nightingales, jays, great crested grebes and owls. This is just a few of those shown. We also saw beautiful butterflies, a few red admiral, painted lady, peacock and deer. Stewart was thanked by President Eileen Baxter. Refreshments brought by members were served. Raffle was won by Janet Jary, Margaretta Wiskin, Joan Brown, Sylvia Spear, Jackie Tubbs, Ali South, Mary Ryan and Wendy Twite. Members were asked by the Village Hall Committee if they were able to provide and serve refreshments at the Leziate Village Hall Christmas Fair on Sunday 1st December from 1pm-4pm we always enjoy this. We meet on the third Tuesday at 2pm in Leziate Village Hall. All welcome to attend. Wendy Twite The Big Flush Well, winter is here and Anglian Water must be thankful that the work advanced so well over the summer months. It is clear that the sewerage pipes and pumping stations are now just about complete which only leaves the sewage treatment works to be constructed before there can be the Big Flush. As you know, the STW has been a contentious issue because of the intrusion into the natural landscape in Church Lane. Anglian Water has accepted that there has been strong feeling over this and following a meeting in the summer with the CARERS Group, and Parish, Borough and County Councillors and with the involvement of Henry Bellingham, our MP, they accepted some suggestions made to ameliorate the problems with the chosen site. Thus they have completely reconfigured the site so that it can be completely hedged around the front and with evergreen and taller trees so that the site will not be seen by any casual user of the lane or walker on the footpath on the hillside. It may take a few years for complete cover but it is the very best solution for this site. We are a bit disappointed that an alternative site that was proposed has not been carried further forward but still believe that a great deal has been achieved. The changes have been such that AW has needed to reapply to NCC for formal planning permission. It is certain that the involvement of all who signed the petition along with all our elected representatives has helped bring about a very positive result and thanks go to everyone for their support. Leziate Parish Council Report

The Parish Council met on Wednesday 13th November 2013. The Parish Council discussed at length the proposed budget cuts from NCC. They agreed to formulate a response highlighting some of the areas that they believe may impact on our community. It was generally felt that some of the proposed cuts could have more impact on a rural community like ours. It was also agreed that some of the preventative costs which are being proposed to cut such as fitting of smoke alarms may not be cost effective in the long run. Individuals still have an opportunity to respond, this link will give more information. http://www.norfolk.gov.uk/Council and democracy/Interact with us/Norfolk putting people first/index.htm Some of the cuts will impact you so, have your say by 12th December 2013. The Parish Councillors were all pleased with the success of the flashing signs. It would appear people are slowing down although we have had speeds recorded of 70mph. Cllr Barnett will analyse the data and give us some up to date statistics when the scheme has settled down. The Chair reported that the Parish Council and other members of the community have been in talks with Sibelco regarding the future of the lakes. The unfortunate sad events of the summer have prompted this and there is a general will to make this area better managed which, in turn, should help reduce the anti-social issues we have experienced. At our Parish Council meeting on 12th February 2014 at 7.00pm there will be a presentation from Sibelco of our

combined thoughts and we would like members of the public to come along to discuss this and contribute to this process. Put the date in your diary now as it will be an informative and interesting meeting, please note we are going to have an earlier start time of 7pm. We are hoping before this point that a questionnaire will be delivered to the parish and we would encourage all residents to fill this in and put forward your comments. Dog fouling has become a real issue in the parish and it has been noted that the area around Brands Wood is particularly bad. Dog fouling is a priority issue for the police and our PCSOs have been given more power to deal with the problem. We would implore people to pick up their dogs mess and deposit it in the many dog bins around the parish. As previously mentioned, the next Parish Council meeting will be held on 12th February in the village hall starting at 7pm for a presentation by Sibelco about the future of the lakes.

Leziate WI November meeting
Unfortunately, Leziate WI did not meet until 19th November and the magazine deadline is the 18th of the month. However, it was our AGM in November and in the evening we visited Caithness Glass with other WIs in the area. We were given free eats and a raffle ticket for prizes they have donated. It was a lovely evening with, of course, an opportunity to buy our presents in the shop. Leziate WI members who visited Gayton WI enjoyed their cheese and wine evening. Wendy Twite

Leziate Village Hall Big Band 'Rat Pack Evening'

The Centre Stage Swing Band, conducted by Jack Brear on behalf of Leader Roger Lines, and featuring popular vocalist Tom Melvin, will be playing at Leziate Village Hall on Monday 2nd December at 7.30pm. The band will be playing selections from the big bands and Frank Sinatra. Admission 4 includes hot wine of the season and nibbles. A feast of good music, not to be missed. With the assistance of Leziate WI and sharing proceeds.

Be aware of being bumped or jostled, possibly by two or three people. This is a common distraction whilst a bag is opened or pockets checked, distracting you from what is going on. Finally, please, please, please don't keep your PIN number with your credit or debit cards, or carry large amounts of cash. It is surprising how many people keep a slip of paper with all their PIN numbers in the same purse or wallet as the cards themselves. This may affect your chances of being reimbursed by the bank and will certainly lead to the card being extensively used in a very quick time.

Hospital Roundabout
We have been told by the Roadworks people that the overnight closure on the B1145 is from 8pm until 5.30am.

The dash is open to anyone of any age and ability a 1.5km dash can be undertaken by anyone who feels that 5km is a bit too far to be dashing and dashing is not essential a slow gentle walk may be preferred. Registration for the dash can be completed in the following ways: 1. Online wwww.norfolkhospice.org.uk 2. By picking up a registration form from any of the Hospice shops 3. By calling 01485 542891 Registration costs 10 per adult and 5 for under 16s. Children under 5 are FREE! Under 16s are invited to dress in festive costume. The Santa Dash will start at 11am with Santas needing to sign in from 10.15.

Advice from the Police about simple things you can do to stay safe whilst shopping over Christmas.
It sounds silly but keep your bag with you don't leave it hooked over the back of a trolley whilst you nip up and down the aisles, or over the back of a chair in a caf, coffee house or restaurant. Make sure any bags are closed and fastened much more difficult to steal what you can't see. Don't place a purse, wallet or phone on a counter or table whilst searching for something else or waiting for a bill. A thief will cause a distraction and it will be gone in a second. For the gentlemen put your wallet in an inside or front pocket rather than a back pocket which is much easier to pick.

1. Trod. Readers will be aware that the trod in Station Rd is under construction. The original plan, which included a trod from the Village Hall towards the A47, has been modified while negotiations continue between the landowner and Highways about extra land needed to construct the trod. Meanwhile, the trod is being extended into Gayton Rd instead. 2. Lights (various). A new sensor has been bought for the church floodlights, which should now come on when it's getting dark, and not before! 3 street lights in Town Close and Gayton Rd have been reported to the maintenance co. as out of action. Another street light in Station Rd is being masked by a tree. The chairman is to speak to the owner. 3. Playground. Keith Harrod has been round the playground with an expert safety inspector who identified some minor safety risks, but nothing serious. Since the meeting, the clerk and Keith have met someone from the Borough Council who will put some remedial work in motion. Details at the next Parish Council meeting. 4. Roads. The new speed signs are reported to be having a good effect on the speed of traffic. Nar Valley Ornithological Society (NarVOS)

Tuesday 28th January 2014, 7.30pm at the Barn Theatre, Sacred Heart Convent School, Swaffham. Access and parking from Sporle Road. Please come along to this illustrated talk by Sue Bryan, entitled:

Incinerator update
The incinerator came incredibly close to defeat at County Hall in October; but the acceptance of Cory Wheelabrator's Revised Project Plan means it will limp on for a while longer. The National Audit Office investigation into the Norfolk Waste procurement came as welcome news. With the Government now saying the 'Willows' is not needed, it will be interesting to see if it impacts upon Lloyds and The Royal Bank of Scotland who are the UK financial backers of the 'Willows'. For more information please visit klwin.com & farmerscampaign.org to see what you can do to help if you wish to. Sending letters has made a real difference. The 2013 Christmas Market will be on 7th December 9am till 4:30pm at Fairgreen Farms, Middleton, PE32 1RN Mike Knights Vice Chairman KLWIN

Birding a Dream
Sue Bryan and Paul Jeffery, well-known local birdwatchers and NarVOS members, took a year out from work in 2010 to fulfil a life's dream, namely to have a year-long birding adventure around the world. Wow! Sue's talk will include many of the ups and downs of this challenging experience. Visitors most welcome. Admission 2 on the night if you are not a NarVOS member. For more information about this meeting or NarVOS call Ian Black on 01760 724092.

Hospital Roundabout
Surfacing has now been underway for several nights and will continue using night shifts until 9th December depending on the weather. Despite some cold and wet nights, the surfacing contractor has made steady progress so far. The B1145 toward Gayton will continue to be closed overnight (8pm until 5.30am) with a signed diversion via Hillington, and 3-way traffic lights will be used overnight on A149 Queen Elizabeth Way and Gayton Road (hospital side) until all surfacing and road markings are done. Every effort is being made to allow emergency vehicles and responders through the works as quickly as possible. Kerbing at the new road edge and for new islands continues using day shifts.

Extra Powers for PCSOs

PCSOs across the district now have additional powers which enable them to issue fixed penalty notices on behalf of the Borough Council, the aim being to tackle the specific problem of irresponsible dog owners who do not pick up after their dog. The fixed penalty notice carries a fine of 75 and can also be used for those picking up and then throwing the bag of dog faeces in the vicinity as a littering offence.

On the 5th November 2013, 24 members of Gayton WI met at the Jubilee Hall, for the Annual General Meeting. Jane welcomed Meg Dorling, a WI Advisor, who had come along to supervise the election of the committee for the coming year. After a small amount of business, during which time Sheila Simpson received a prize for attaining 25 points in competitions, financial and committee reports were read. Jane thanked everyone for their contributions to the group throughout the year and announced three new committee members. Following an election, Penny Andrews was declared the President for the coming year. Delicious refreshments were served as members enjoyed social time and the raffle was drawn, with prizes awarded to Penny W., Ann M., Margaret M. and Judy. Our next meeting is on Tuesday 3rd December, when the Windmill Hand-bell Ringers will provide entertainment for our Christmas party evening. Ladies, have you ever wondered what joining the WI could do for you? Then, please come along to one of our meetings on the first Tuesday of the month. You will be made most welcome.

Local knowledge needed to help complete directory for older people

A new online directory, which will help older people to make the most of living in West Norfolk, is being compiled on behalf of the West Norfolk Partnership. The directory, Living Independently in Later Years or LILY, includes information on money matters, social activities, health, transport and more, and is designed to be a 'one-stop-shop' for anyone looking for information for older people in the borough. People who run a club or service for older people (over 65s) are invited to contact Joanne Mawson on 01553 616653 or by emailing asklily@westnorfolk.gov.uk by the end of December. When contacting Mrs Mawson, please include a brief description of your event/activity/service and contact information (please note this may be published on the website). If you run events or activities please ensure you include information about the time, place and day that it occurs and frequency of the activity. The team is keen to learn about all types of services and activities for older people, but is particularly interested to find information about local lunch clubs, community transport schemes, social groups and clubs that meet regularly. It is anticipated that the LILY directory will be available to the public online in early in 2014.

Come and join us at one of our carol services this Christmas. Details of all our services are on the centre pages.

Christmas Prayer
Let all the world know that Jesus Christ is KING! Let all the world know that Jesus Christ is LORD! Let all the world know that Jesus Christ is GOD! Thank you Jesus, thank you for all that you have done! You could have been born in a palace, with all the treasures of the world. Instead you were born without money, and in a manger. You showed us that your kingdom is not of this world. You showed us that the riches of this world are not good enough for you. You are holy, sacred and perfect. Let this Christmas be wonderful! Let this Christmas be awesome as we celebrate your sacred and holy birth. Let us remember you and your word, when we gather together in your name. Let glory, honour and praise be to you alone dear Jesus. Happy birthday to our saviour! Amen.

What have we been up to? Correction Did anybody spot my deliberate mistake last month? I reported that we had made corn dollies and celebrated harvest in October actually that was September!! In October (with Halloween only a step away) the children joined in a very scary story about things that go bump in the night Oooooh! Aaaaah! BUT We are brave, theres no danger, We have Jesus as our Saviour! The children then enjoyed making some very scary spiders (my worst nightmare!)

There will be a family service on

Christmas Eve at 4pm where the children will help tell the Christmas story as we build our crib and light our Christingles.

Gayton Parish Council News

Meeting held 11th November 2013 The Clerk confirmed that Robert Webster and a friend had looked at the skatepark design concepts and had disregarded the ones with steel ramps because of the noise that they generate in favour of the equipment with plywood ramps. The Clerk reported that the Council now needs to consult with the parish and ask parishioners to choose their preferred design from the three available. It was agreed to hold an online poll on the village website and to deliver leaflets to every household showing the designs and giving information on how people can vote or make comments. Once this has taken place, the Council can move on to make applications for funding for the equipment. Lych Gates The Council noted the Parochial Church Council's proposal that it pays for new gates to be erected at the Church and that the Parish Council covers the cost of repairs to the lych. The Council noted that the quote received for repair work totalled 550. In principle, the Council agreed to donate a maximum of 550 towards repair work, subject to a faculty being granted, and for the Parochial Church Council to arrange all works. Incinerator County Councillor Toby Coke attended the meeting and told the Parish Council that although Norfolk County Council voted against terminating the incinerator project by two votes recently, it is reasonably likely that the Secretary of State will turn down the planning application for the incinerator on the basis that the EU targets for waste disposal can be met without it. In addition to this, the PFI funding of

withdrawn because it has acknowledged that the incinerator is not necessary to meet waste targets. Footpath between Landsdown Close and Rosemary Lane It is hoped that the gravel will be laid on the footpath some time in November. Anglian Water Mr Beales reported that Anglian Water plans to begin repair works in early December. The findings from the investigation they carried out showed, among other things, that 111 metres of public sewer require rehabilitation in Back Street and Lime Grove. For the full minutes of the meeting, visit www.gaytonnews.co.uk. The next meeting is planned to be on 9th December at 7.30pm.

Megan's Challenge News By Debbie Thrower On Thursday 31 October 2013 at Chatteris Airfield ten challengers completed the adrenaline flowing, once in a lifetime thrill of a sponsored skydive jumping tandem from up to 13,000ft. After a short briefing we boarded the plane, it took approximately 15 minutes to reach our skydiving altitude and then harnessed to the front of a fully qualified instructor we jumped from the plane. Then an exhilarating minute of free fall reaching terminal velocity of 120mph, combined with the peace and tranquillity when the parachute opens at around 5,000ft, giving us the opportunity to take in stunning views before landing on the drop zone making it a unique and enjoyable experience we will never forget.

collecting sponsors monies but we are looking at achieving between 2000 and 2500 for the chosen charity Keeping Abreast in King's Lynn. wwwkeepingabreast.org.uk Roger Skipper, however, took on the challenge for a more personal cause which was to raise money to purchase a new wheelchair for his grandson Daniel aged 7 with Cerebral Palsy and has achieved around 500 towards this - well done. We would like to thank everyone who sponsored Megan's Challenge and Roger. Many Thanks

Horse Ride in Newcastle

On 21st September 2013 Katherine McCallum and a group of friends who live in Newcastle, organised a charity fancy dress horse ride for Megan's Challenge and raised the fantastic amount of 412.00. They had a great day, with good weather raising additional money on route from passers-by. Both of the pubs at which they stopped for refreshments had a whip round and they also even stopped a rugby game. Altogether they covered a distance of approx. 14 miles. They caused quite a stir whilst they rode past and became local celebrities for the day whilst promoting awareness of Megan's Challenge. A big thank you to all the riders.

West Norfolk Jubilee Youth Orchestra (WNJYO)

West Norfolk Jubilee Youth Orchestra is a local music organisation in West Norfolk that offers young musicians, aged under 21, the opportunity to play music as part of a group. The organisation consists of two ensembles: a Concert Band and an Orchestra, comprising musicians of Grade 4+ standard, allowing challenging but exciting repertoire to be played. WNJYO is a place that also provides players with the chance to meet fellow musicians and build friendships through playing as part of a team. We have two professional conductors who take both the rehearsals and the concerts, Mr Eddie Seales (Concert Band) and Mr Robert Galliard (Orchestra). Concerts take place all over West Norfolk from Hunstanton to Thetford, Kings Lynn and Swaffham with additional venues planned for the future. WNJYO will be performing in a concert at All Saints' Church, in Hillington Square, Kings Lynn on the 8th December and would like to invite you to come along and listen to the repertoire. This is also an opportunity for those upcoming musicians that would like to join a friendly and happy group, to see and chat to the band and talk to the conductors about joining WNJYO. We rehearse on Wednesday evenings at Springwood High School (PE30 4AW) from 6.45pm until 9.00pm, with a short interval for refreshments and a bit of

gossip. There is a membership fee of 45 per year but new members are very welcome to visit a rehearsal free of charge to see whether it is something of which they would like to become a part. If you are interested in becoming a member of WNJYO, please contact either of the conductors: eddie@eddiesealesbigband.co.uk (Eddie Seales) or rob.galliard235@btinternet.com (Rob Galliard) or our Youth Representative, epigott2nr2@nsix.org.uk (Emma Pigott).

GAYTON THORPE NEWS

Wear It Pink Day 24th October 2013
I would like to say a huge thank you to all who offered their help. I was overwhelmed by the support given both in terms of donations for the tombola, raffle, teas and cake stall etc. and your help on the day. Thank you also to those of you who attended to enjoy tea and cake, we had a lovely afternoon, and without you this would not have been possible. I am sure the 'bra banners' helped to attract you! As a result of your generosity, an amazing total of 655 was raised for Breast Cancer. Thank you, and very well done. Wendy Martell

As always, anyone who does a reading can pick their favourite carol to be sung in the service. The readings are designed to be straightforward to read and some are very short. Sarah

Members of the magazine team met to say a fond farewell to Catriona as she prepares to leave Gayton with her family for New Zealand. Catriona was thanked for all her hard work on the magazine and for her involvement in other village activities. We wish Catriona, Jon and Iona a safe journey to the other side of the world and look forward to hearing their news from time to time.
