Those with little or no previous welding experience are advised to attend the
Certificate in Visual nspection of Welds course to prepare for this course.
Course Content:
The duties and responsibilities of a welding inspector; fusion welding processes;
typical weld defects; types of steel; carbon-manganese, low alloy and stainless
steels; hardening of steels; weldability; heat treatment; parent metal defects;
visual inspection; testing parent metals and welds; destructive tests; NDT
techniques; welder and procedure approval; codes and standards; outline of safe
working practices; practice in examination questions; continuous and end-of-course assessment. n addition,
candidates meeting the CSWP requirements for eligibility complete the relevant CSWP examination on day 5.

to understand factors which influence the quality of fusion welds in steels
to recognise characteristics of commonly used welding processes in relation to quality control
to interpret drawing instructions and symbols to ensure that specifications are met
to set up and report on inspection of welds, macrosections and other mechanical tests
to assess and report on welds to acceptance levels
to confirm that incoming material meets stipulated requirements and recognise the effects on weld quality of
departure from specification
to be in a position to pass the Welding nspector - Level 2 examinations
AdditionaI Information:
CSWP Welding nspector examination - All candidates must attend a CSWP approved course of training prior to
examination. Enrolment on this course does not constitute reservation of an examination. All courses may be followed
by a CSWP Welding nspector examination for candidates with appropriate experience as specified in CSWP
document W-6-92. All CSWP documents are available on the CSWP website.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Welding nspector for a minimum of 3 years with experience related to the duties and responsibilities listed in Clause
1.2.2 under qualified supervision, independently verified.
or
Certified Visual Welding nspector (Level 1) for a minimum of 2 years with job responsibilities in the areas listed in
1.2.1 and 1.2.2.
or
Welding nstructor or Welding Foreman/Supervisor for a minimum of 5 years.
1.2.1 VisuaI WeIding Inspectors (LeveI 1) (under the supervision of a WeIding Inspector or Senior
WeIding Inspector)
a) An introduction to the welding processes
b) Codes and standards: Application of the requirements of codes and standards.
c) Parent material identity: Verification against documentation and markings of correctness of parent material.
d) Welding consumables identity: Verification of correctness of welding consumables (electrodes, filler wires,
consumable inserts, gases, fluxes etc).
e) Pre-weld inspection: Verification that dimensions, fitup and weld preparations are in accordance with the
engineering drawings.
f) Preheating: Verification that preheat (where required) is in accordance with specified procedures.
g) Post weld visual inspection: Visual inspection and dimensional check of completed weldment against specification
requirements and drawings.
h) n-process welding surveillance: Surveillance during welding to verify compliance with specified procedure including
any preheat, interpass temperature control and post heat requirements.
1.2.2 WeIding Inspectors (LeveI 2)
Those given above plus:
i) Supervision of Visual Welding nspectors in the conduct of activities (a) to (h) above.
j) Welding procedures: Establishing that a procedure is available, has been approved as required by the
appropriate authority and is being employed in production.
k) Witnessing of welder and procedure approval tests: Witnessing the preparation of test pieces and destructive tests,
and verifying compliance with appropriate standards and specifications.
l) Welder approvals: Verification that adequate and valid welder approvals are available, and that only approved
welders as required are used in production.
m) Post weld heat treatment: Verification that post weld heat treatment has been conducted in accordance with
specification requirements.
n) Reports: Preparation of inspection reports.
