Effects of MLD The effects of MLD are numerous and generally it affects the nervous system, smooth muscles,

fluid movement in the connective tissue and may have an affect on the immune system (though this has not yet been proven). Through the pumping and stretching effect on the lymph vessels, the Dr. Vodder method of MLD stimulates the contraction of lymph vessels, helping to move the lymph forward and drain the connective tissue. cientific research in !urope ("ut#schenreuter, Mislin, $%ldi, et al.) has made this a well researched therapeutic techni&ue. APPLICATIONS Treatment is performed by certified MLD therapists who have undergone the four wee', post(graduate, training program. MLD can be utilised in the treatment of many different conditions including) *rimary and econdary Lymphedema Venous insufficiency +on(infected inflammatory conditions (e.g. sprains and strains) ,lceration Dermatological conditions -irculatory disturbances ports in.uries / D 0urns *re( and post( plastic surgery Lymph Vessel System The lymph vessel system is responsible for carrying e1cess water, proteins and wastes from the connective tissue bac' to the blood stream. During the transportation process the lymph is cleaned, filtered and concentrated. Many immune reactions occur in the lymph nodes. 2f the pathways become congested, bloc'ed, damaged or severed, then fluids can build up in the connective tissue leading to edema. !ventually cell pathology may begin. 2f there is damage in the connective tissue (e.g. burns, chronic inflammation, ulceration, hematoma), then the lymph vessel system must transport the damaged cells, inflammatory products and to1ins away from the area. The &uic'er this can happen, the faster recovery will be. History The history of the method begins in 3456 with !mil and !strid Vodder who practiced as physical therapists in $rance. They carried out much investigation on the lymph vessel system and developed a series of light, rhythmic manipulations in order to stimulate lymph flow and fluid movement. !ncouraged by their success with patients, they developed a systematic approach to treatment of the entire body which they called 7Manual Lymph Drainage7. Later, they established the Dr. Vodder -enter in Denmar' and began teaching their method throughout !urope. They designated "ildegard and 89nther :ittlinger in ;ustria to be their successors and to teach and to train teachers in this method. The :ittlingers established the Dr. Vodder chule ( ;ustria in 34<3 and brought the Dr. Vodder method to +orth ;merica in the 34<=7s. The Vodder -enter, Denmar' and the Dr. Vodder chule ( ;ustria have authori#ed the Dr. Vodder chool ( +orth ;merica as the only school in +orth ;merica to teach the original Dr. Vodder method of Manual Lymph Drainage. The director, /obert "arris, has been an instructor since 34>< and lectures internationally on the Dr. Vodder method of MLD. Therapists & Health Care Practitio ers! CDT

COM"INED DECON#ESTIVE THE$AP% &CDT' -DT is used primarily in the treatment of lymphedema and venous insufficiency edema and it has been shown to relieve the edema, fibrosis and the Maggie Williams, PT accompanying pain and discomfort of these conditions. -DT is a combination of the Dr. Vodder method of Manual Lymph Drainage, remedial e1ercise therapy, compression bandaging (or compression garments in the maintenance phase) and therapeutic s'in care. Treatme t *atients undergo an intensive course of treatment, usually lasting three to four wee's and may often see a good reduction in the swelling during this time. Maintenance therapy is usually re&uired at much less fre&uent intervals in order to maintain the reduction. *atients are given specific guidelines to help them maintain their reduction at home. The effectiveness and therapeutic benefits of the Dr. Vodder method of Manual Lymph Drainage and -ombined Decongestive Therapy are well 'nown in !urope, where the techni&ue is widely prescribed in hospitals and clinics. 2t is recogni#ed by the ;ustrian and 8erman national health insurance plans. 2n +orth ;merica, MLD and -DT are becoming well 'nown therapeutic methods, especially in the treatment of lymphedema. 2t is used in hospitals and clinics by health care practitioners who have completed the Dr. Vodder chool training program. 2nsurance reimbursement for therapy varies in different parts of the continent and with different companies. Therapists Therapists who have certified with the Dr. Vodder chool are re( certified every two years in order to maintain the high &uality and s'ill levels of our therapists. -urrently there are currently over ?== fully ( certified Dr. Vodder Manual Lymph Drainage therapists in +orth ;merica. The demand is growing, especially in the field of lymphedema care. 2nterest for the courses comes from physical therapists and massage therapists as well as nurses, occupational therapists and doctors. Los efectos del Drenaje Linftico Manual Los efectos de DLM son numerosos y generalmente afectan al sistema nervioso, los msculos, el movimiento del fluido del tejido conjuntivo, etc, causando un efecto regenerativo en el sistema inmunolgico.
