Ancient Greece and Rome Summative Assessment

VA SOL: 3.1 The student will explain how the contributions of ancient Greece and Rome have
influenced the present world in terms of architecture, government (direct and representative democracy), and sports. Essential Questions: My main goal is for the students to really understand each of these

civilizations so that they can analyze their influence on our society. My summative assessment will focus on this idea. How did the Greek and Roman democracies influence the United States democracy? How did the Greek and Roman democracies differ? Is one more closely related to ours? Which sports from the Greek Olympics do we still participate in today? What types of Greek and Roman architecture do we still see today? What would the United States look like today if these two societies had not existed? Would we have a democracy? The summative assessment is to have students create a pamphlet or poster advertising how our society is derived from Greek and Roman civilization. Their final work must have the three essential pieces of knowledge: sports, government, and architecture/art. For each category students must address the similarities to our society today. What ideas did the US keep? What is different? I want the students to be able to take the knowledge that they learned from this unit and be able to analyze it. I really want them to be able to make connections to our lives today. The Greek and Roman civilizations had a big influence on our society. My goal is for students to make that connection and be able to explain why. In this assessment students must be able to explain not only how sports, government, and art/architecture influenced the United States but also how are they different. Students must be able to support their statements with information from our lessons. This assessment is look to see if students can think critically about the material they learned and present it in a creative way.
