Inventors Forum
Inventors and entrepreneurs from around the region came together for a fantastic day of information and mentoring at the The Innovation Pipeline on the 31st October. Keynote speaker Ric Richardson, one of Australias most successful and international L-R Andrew, Peter and Ric inventors, joined forces with Peter Davidson, one of the key advisors and investors in PayPal and Andrew Stead, co-founder and director of investment group Sydney Angels and Ignition Labs. The day was organised by RDA Northern Rivers and provided a fascinating insight into the world of innovative development from getting venture capital, protecting your idea or invention through patents and looking at ways to kick start business through incubators and accelerators. The audience were also kept entertained by stories of success and failure that have been experienced rst hand by the panel of experts.

"Stallholders were kept busy with inquiries from people wanting a range of information from home design, solar panels and hot water, LED lighting and home ventilation to environmentally-friendly pool solutions, eco-loans and cardboard furniture," Council's Sustainability Program Leader, Deb Firestone, said. "Visitors were interested in Aussie-made products and services and they enjoyed the convenience of being able to talk directly to numerous suppliers and manufacturers about products and services that will help them reduce their environmental impacts and save money. "There was also an excellent flow of information back to Council, with many people providing their suggestions for a more sustainable Tweed." Ms Firestone commented.

THE ROUND UP
Grafton: Discover it all
designed by local graphic artist Jess Francis from Yoohoo Web & Graphic Design, Grafton. Jesss Grafton billboard concept design denitely wowed the selection panel and will denitely capture the attention of by passers. The Deputy Mayor, Craig Howe, who chaired the selection panel said Utilising these spaces to attract the attention of visitors, encouraging them to visit Grafton and hopefully extend their stay, can only enhance and boost our economy in the Clarence Valley. The design promotes the city of Grafton by showing multiple aspects of whats on offer and encourages visitors to Discover it all. This appeals to potential tourists and implies that you could spend a long time here with so much to see and do.
Wow..have you seen the new Grafton billboards located on the Pacic Highway on the Northern entrance to Grafton and on the Gwydir Highway? Grafton is the focal point for the intersection of three major highways, the Pacic Highway, Gwydir Highway and the Summerland Way. The billboards are a great way to attract through trafc and visitors to Grafton. Mayor Richie Williamson said Local graphic artists were invited to submit concepts for the new billboard design. The new signage was successfully
Things have evolved. Byron United has ve fresh faces on the board providing us with a balance of gender. It's a dynamic team of experts that are already hard at work. The future of Byron United lies in its engagement with its members, this will be a key element to the new board's direction. We are looking forward to hosting a number of events and forums for our members in 2014. At our recent AGM we thanked our Byron United grafti busters, Paul Waters and Mike Eastwood for their super human efforts to combat the
towns grafti. In the past year the beautication project has tackled a huge amount of grafti and has plans to continue to do so in 2014. I attended the Council's Business Roundtable meeting last week. Much of the discussion involved the Christmas / New Year period - our town's peak trading time. The proposed 12 day "Park and Ride" is likely to happen. It is a trial by Mayor Richardson and we fully support him in his efforts to reduce the peak period trafc delays into Byron Bay - perhaps the main negative element of our visitor's experience.

BIZ TIPS
ast edition we identied Sales as the number one challenge to business growth. This edition lets look at strategies to increase sales. Every business can be scaled up, the key is to establish what you, the business owner ultimately want to achieve. Many business owners have an idea or a Growth Target in mind but often it is not specic, not in writing, no action plans and not timebound. Without a Business Growth Plan the business will lack direction and be reactive by focussing on the short term and immediate rather than the long term and strategic. Therefore, the rst step for every business owner who wants growth is to build a Business Growth Plan, remember:
If you don't know where you are going any road can take you there Lewis Carroll , Alice in Wonderland.
Every business needs to actively encourage customers to buy from us not them. This takes careful planning to establish a point of difference that works for your customers. This strategy is vital for businesses where there is high competition and low differentiation of product or service. Marketing guru Philip Kotler denes a companys value proposition as the set of benets it promises to deliver to consumers. Dont have a value proposition? Think about what a bad example of your product or service looks like and compare it to your product or service. For example a curtain retailer says to their clients here are 4 things that most other makers get wrong with
their roman blinds.. heres an example of poorly hung blinds with gathers in the seams which makes the blinds ripple not smooth heres our ones that always look like this. Straight away the discussion is no longer on price but about value. The next step is to determine your strategic marketing position, how you communicate the benets/values of your product or service to potential customers such as: where you sell your product; how you make it; where you make it and of course price. Establishing your target market is another critical step and importantly the target with the greatest prot potential. Unfortunately I often see marketing pieces written or sales campaigns started without direction, resulting in campaigns being launched aiming to appeal to everyone and more often than not appeal to no one. You need to know everything there is to know about the people you are trying to reach and importantly how they feel about your product or service. My dear, here we must run as fast as we can, just to stay in place. And if you wish to go anywhere you must run twice as fast as that. Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland Many business owners end up like Alice, so outsource the experience and business tools and diagnostics to help you achieve the breakthrough in sales growth to achieve real business growth call 0413 007197 for more information.

Budgeting Tips
Fiona Preston, District Manager, ANZ ow are your nances tracking? We usually know how much money is coming into our bank accounts, but do you really know where it all goes out to? If your money is tight or youd like to save for a goal, the following tips will help get you on the right path to achieving your future goals. 1. Save off the top. Put a regular amount into a high interest savings account as soon as youre paid then you dont have the opportunity to spend it and it gets you into a regular savings habit; you may not even notice its gone after a while! 2. Be realistic with your budget. By having a budget in place you can work out what you can afford for your discretionary spend and save for things that you want. You still have to enjoy living, keep this in mind when setting your budget so that youre more likely to stick to it over time. 3. Reduce your personal debt. Non-deductible debt is not benecial in good times or bad, especially if the loan is unsecured (such as a credit card or personal loan), which generally attract high interest rates. Try to avoid building up debt unless it is an investment strategy where you are after the leveraging and taxation benets. 4. Plan for the future. Dont underestimate the importance of superannuation in planning for your retirement - whatever your age. Superannuation shouldnt be a scary word - you can be as conservative or as aggressive as you like within your Super fund, and the Government has many useful strategies such as salary sacricing, spousal contributions,
co-contribution, and Transition to Retirement strategies that may benet you. Find out which of these suit you and look to maximise your retirement benets. 5. Protect, protect, protect Consider strategies for protecting your income and assets, like having the right insurance policies. Consider protecting your income or the contribution you make to the household in case something happens and youre unable to work or perform your duties due to an illness or accident. No doubt youve also spent a long time saving up the money to purchase your assets, so make sure they are protected. 6. Always seek professional advice. It is important to have your own views, goals and objectives, however the nancial environment changes on a regular basis and it is important to ensure that your strategies are not only relevant to your personal situation, but are also up-to-date, don't breach any rules and provide the best outcome for you. To help assess whether your accounts suit your needs and support your plans for the future, visit the team at any ANZ branch in the Northern Rivers district for your complimentary A-Z Review.

1 in 6 working-age Australians said they will never be in a position to retire fully Latest ATO statistics for SMSFs show 17.5% of members are under 45 years old and 24% are 45 to 54. Mostly in the asset accumulation phase, many of their super contributions come from Superannuation Guarantee (SG) payments and salary sacrice. The maximum concessional contribution per member, for 59 and under, is $25,000 per year. Using instalment warrants in a Self Managed Superannuation Fund (SMSF) Looking at a strategy worth considering for younger (accumulation phase) SMSF clients. For example: a portfolio of ve blue chip stocks investing $10,000 in each (warrants are based on: NAB, ANZ, WES, TLS and SUN). Using the newly launched Commonwealth Bank instalment warrant series IYB. There is also an IYA series which is 50% geared. The key features of these warrants are: Approx. 70% geared Effective interest rate in 7% - 8% range Interest deductible capped but in this case 98% deductible Expiry July 2015 when second payment is due Non-recourse so on expiry can choose not to make second payment but if you do then you forfeit the initial capital invested A new series may be offered on expiry to roll into if you wish to defer making cash payment Meanwhile you receive all dividends and franking credits No stop loss, no margin calls Traded on ASX Over the life of the instalment warrants this is an after tax positive
These gures above were based on their dividend and franking forecasts. So what are the downside risks? The initial capital outlay could all be lost if share prices decline steeply and remember leverage increases downside risk, so for a 70% geared product the initial value declines pretty quickly. However, the benet of using a portfolio of shares is that you can isolate individual share price declines so they dont spread to other holdings. If a company either doesnt pay a dividend or pays a lower dividend. Changes to superannuation or tax laws or rapidly increasing interest rates, which affect the assumptions this strategy is based on. Risk also resides with the issuer. How do I go about investing in instalment warrants? Firstly you need specialist advice to ensure you select the most appropriate warrant investment according to your risk tolerance and investment objectives. n 2007 the government changed the laws allowing SMSF trustees to borrow to acquire shares, residential and commercial property. In 2010, the borrowing rules were tightened to ensure that borrowing by a SMSF trustee is pretty much limited to residential, commercial and rural property. Many Collins Hume clients have structured tax effective loans for their SMSF or, as we prefer to call them, Family Super Fund. With over 30,000 SMSFs now borrowing to acquire property, it is a great time to share some strategies you may wish to consider: Transferring property into a SMSF - a member may wish to transfer business real property that they or a related party own into the fund by way of a borrowing arrangement. But watch out for CGT and stamp duty. Business real property includes farmland, ofces, factories and other commercial property. Buying Big - Borrowing lets the Trustee of a SMSF obtain leverage to acquire those assets that normally would be out of their reach. However care should be taken, as borrowing not only magnies gains but will also magnify any losses. Acquire Business Property - Where a family trust, company or partnership owns a property from which the family business operates, this could be transferred to a SMSF as a mix of contributions and SMSF Loan by a related party. In certain
circumstances the owner of the property may be able to use the small business CGT concessions in relation to the business property transfer. Transferring more assets into a SMSF - The contributions rules limit the dollar amount of contributions that may be contributed to a fund. However if the member wants to transfer a commercial property they own into their SMSF, they can use loans as well as contributions. There are no set LVR requirements for related party loans subject to the arms-length rules. Use SMSF Loans regularly - Once the SMSF trustee is comfortable using a SMSF Loan arrangement, they may want to enter into more than one arrangement to help build a portfolio of properties or shares. There are a number of important advantages for a SMSF trustee that successfully carries out a borrowing arrangement to acquire shares, managed funds, residential property or commercial property. By using a SMSF Loan arrangement it adds another level of growth and savings potential for the trustee and a greater degree of nancial control. However, as with all investment strategies it should be considered carefully and professional advice should be sought. For more information go to: http://www.collinshume.com.au.

hether youre an eco-warrior or a shrewd businessperson the fact is green energy saves money and lots of it. If your business is suffering from high electricity bills its safe to say that the situation is going to get a lot worse, carbon tax or no carbon tax. The sensible thing to do is take a look at sourcing your own power. With a massive 6.4 mW of solar installations behind them and many more ahead, Nickel Energy is a trusted, reliable and experienced local solar provider. Started in 2008 they had a simple vision to power local communities with clean, renewable energy. Since that time, they have worked with state and local governments, businesses, charities and organisations, advising on commercial solar energy, solar hot water and energy efciency. Their team of expert designers and installers provide local, national and international experience and are dedicated to creating efcient, practical commercial and residential solar solutions.
RICHMOND DAIRIES
Richmond Dairies has a goal of powering its administration building with renewable energy. Their skilled team calculated the daily consumption of the building and provided that data to Nickel Energy. The technical team used that information and recommended a 30 kilowatt solar system size for them. Working in collaboration with the team at Richmond Dairies, they designed a solar system to maximise efciency and output. Once all approvals had been completed, the roof installation of more than 120 panels was completed in under 4 days, with the electrical work completed soon after. delighted with the solar power system, especially in this era of rising power prices. Neil Easter, Principle, Summerland Christian College:
Their experience in large, medium and small-scale solar systems is extensive and diverse and has been developed through more than 150 commercial solar installations and hundreds of residential installations. This knowledge allows them to plan every installation with the minimal impact on your business or home. Nickel Energy is a fully accredited member of the Clean Energy Council of Australia. Founded on honesty, transparency and a dedication to offering valuedriven solutions, they are experienced in commercial, industrial and government solar installations. Their commitment to quality and safety is a cornerstone of the business. Strict processes ensure that the systems offered are based on actual energy needs and consumption for residential and commercial clients. East Lismore Shopping Centre is a case in point and owner Barry Robinson comments: Any landlord that has a stable tenant with large electricity use should consider solar. From steel fabricators to food preparation, supermarkets to bottle shops, you will often nd that they are paying more in electricity than in rent. You dont have to believe in climate change or the carbon tax Solar makes money now! Another happy customer is Summerland Christian College, Principal Neil Easter comments that they are: delighted with the solar power system, especially in this era of rising power prices. It has been a blessing to have the system installed and we appreciate the excellent service and efciency of Nickel Energy in establishing this asset under the Federal Government's National Solar Schools Program. From their purpose built Clean Energy Centre in Lismore the team also offer residential and commercial air-conditioning, solar hot water, photovoltaic/thermal systems and maintenance. It makes serious nancial sense to invest in solar power for business. In our experience one of the largest expenses for business is their electricity bill. So solar provides a solution, our customers are reporting up to a 20% ROI from their systems. Its simply a win win. says Commercial Manager Andy Turnball. BUSINESS MATTERS
LEGAL CORNER
n everyday life disputes arise involving an individual, a business or company invariably over money or sometimes over an issue not involving money such as failure to abide by aspects of agreement. Quite often an initial discussion between those affected fails to rectify the problem, resulting in one or the other seeking legal advice. At all times, however, commercial reality must overrule the emotional aspect of any dispute. I have had many instances of becoming involved in matters at a point in time where precious time has already been lost that could have been gainfully employed in possibly defusing the issue. My primary advice to anyone involved in a dispute is always to remember to seek legal advice sooner rather than later. If a commercial dispute arises and you feel it necessary to consider your options I suggest the following points are relevant, but not exhaustive. Obviously what needs to be done depends on the individual circumstances of each case. 1. Ensure you have all the relevant paperwork in relation to the dispute.
2. Make a detailed note of the circumstances giving rise to the dispute, setting out the name of the person or persons involved and relevant dates and actions. 3. Make an appointment to discuss your legal options. Prior to the initial conference forward the material available to the issue and a prepared statement of facts. That way your legal adviser has an awareness of the matter before the initial consultation. This saves you both time and money. 4. At the initial conference discussion will consider what remedies are available to resolve the dispute, depending on whether the position is one of seeking a remedy or disputing an issue, money or otherwise. 5. If you are the person who is seeking a remedy in a dispute, an attempt should be made with legal assistance to resolve the situation before taking the step of commencing proceedings in either a Court or a Tribunal. Commencing formal action will, of necessity, add to the legal expenses. 6. If you are on the receiving end of a dispute, consideration of the claim being made against you again needs to discussed with legal assistance and whether, on a commercial basis, settlement is appropriate. 7. No matter which side of a dispute a person or entity is on, at the end of a contested hearing in a Court or Tribunal usually the unsuccessful party pays the costs of the other party. Information provided here is of a general nature and individuals should seek professional advice before embarking on any dispute proceedings. Air T&G Ballina based Air T&G is a thriving local business which just a short time ago was operating on just a single phone line, fax line and a mobile and they were missing important calls from customers. They often missed calls due to multiple calls coming in at once, which could not be attended at the same time. Ofce Manager, Sandy McGauley contacted Stephen McQueen, their local Telstra specialist for advice. Stephen Comments, Our rst priority was to ensure that Air T&G had a exible system that worked effectively in their business, giving them the mobility they need and ensuring they can stay in touch with their customers. The phone system was upgraded to 2 lines, a phone system that includes cordless phones that can be carried around the main site and a holding system where they can have their own advertising message running, giving customer information on the business while they are on hold. We no longer miss important customer calls and we have a professional system for holding calls as well. Were a professional business and our phone system was letting us down, thanks to Steve and his team were now professional on the phone as well as in the air. Georgie Latimer (owner) commented. The upgrade has proved particularly important as the Air T&G team have been down south on helping out with the bush re emergency and have had to deal with important phone calls from emergency services. The new system has meant that they have still been able to avoid missing important messages and calls while out helping communities at this devastating time. Stephen from Telstra Store Ballina comments: Were a locally owned and operated business, so we understand what it takes to run one. Thats why we make it our top priority to get to know your business and nd the best Internet, mobility and voice solutions to suit how you work.

here are so many choices of smartphone these days, its hard to know which one is the right t for you. Its easy to get caught up in all the jargon but at the end of the day what does it all mean? Is having a dual-core Qualcom snapdragon processor better than a quad-core Krait and is a Super AMOLED HD screen better than an LCD? Heres something the manufacturers wont tell you, they all do fundamentally the same thing, the major differences come down to 4 points. 1. Operating system: There are three main operating systems on the market at the moment, IOS (Apple I-phones), Android and Windows. Each of these has their good and bad points but it really comes down to personal preference as to which one you want to use. For those that have never used a smart phone, its a good idea to see one in action before you purchase it so you can get a feel for how the phone works. Check out different ones through work colleagues and friends. 2. Memory; each phone has a different amount of memory ranging from less than 1Gb to 64Gb. Some phones will also allow you to use a Micro SD memory card to expand the memory. Depending on what you are going to use the phone for you may need one with more memory.
3. Network Band; Many people dont realise that each mobile network operates on multiple frequencies. Each phone will be able to pick certain frequencies but not all. It pays to make sure the phone you are looking at is compatible with all your carriers frequency bands to ensure you get the best reception you can. It would be a shame to buy a phone that only operates on one of your carriers bands and you lose signal in places you used to have reception. 4. Camera; the camera on a phone is becoming more of a selling point than the phone itself. Some of the new smartphones have better cameras than some digital SLRs that retail for the same price. Be careful though, although the phones camera may be high resolution and have some great bells and whistles it is still a phone with a camera built in. It is important to be realistic about how well the camera will perform in different conditions. If you are after a camera, I suggest buying a camera, not a smartphone because of the camera. When its all said and done, you will be hard pressed nding a phone that doesnt do everything you want and more (unless youre a phone geek like me!). hile the general unemployment rate to September 2013 for Richmond-Tweed and Mid-North Coast was 6.2% (ABS Labour Force Survey), youth (15 24) was 14.9% and youth (15 19) was an alarming 26.3%. So why consider employing young people? EnviTE General Manager, Meg Nichols says young workers can become loyal and valuable employees who will form the basis of your businesss future. They can also bring new enthusiasm and ideas and are not afraid of technology or change, Meg says. The Fair Work Ombudsman offers a Best Practice Guide to employing young workers. If best practice principles are applied, your guidance and support for young employees can shape their attitude to work. This will benet not only your business but also that young persons whole working life. Taking the time to explain basic workplace practices to young employees will pay dividends: Their entitlements to annual leave, personal leave and the payment of wages Your process for authorising different forms of leave and the date and manner in which wages are paid What an employee should do if theyre unwell and cant come to work Your workplace health and safety rules Your performance management system
You should ensure your young employee has someone they can approach if they have any questions about their employment. Treating young workers well can give your business a good reputation in the marketplace. You could become known as a preferred employer among local youth and attract the very best candidates to your vacancies, Meg says. Training is an important part of motivating young employees. Young workers are usually eager and willing to learn. They are more likely to apply for jobs when they know they will receive training. Training can help ensure a safer work environment. If a young worker asks to undertake a work related training program, consider it seriously - it may ultimately improve workplace morale and productivity. A buddy or mentor can be particularly effective to help young employees settle in, improve their skills and remain loyal, which will reduce staff turnover and increase productivity. Consider opportunities for traineeships and apprenticeships. Apprenticeship schemes can be of great benet to both employers and young employees and nancial incentives are available. EnviTE Employment Lismore Team Leader, Judy Maxworthy, who presides over a Job Services Australia youth specialist contract, offers a challenge to local employers. If you care about our community, why not give a young person a go today? For more information call EnviTE on 1300 989 369 or visit www.envite.org.au.
You can increase productivity, capability and staff retention by employing young people
EnviTE Employment can help you contribute to reducing youth unemployment rates by: Presenting young candidates with desirable employability skills Helping you prepare a training plan to quickly improve young employees skills Assisting you to access relevant apprenticeship or traineeship schemes Nurturing your young employees up to six months following placement Explaining how you can become a preferred employer among local youth We also provide a Job in Jeopardy service: if you have a young employee whose job is at risk due to a disability or mental health condition but could keep it with additional support, contact us.

eld annually in May, the Northern Rivers Careers Expo attracts 1800 2000 students, school leavers and young people wanting to make informed decisions about their future and their career path. Exhibitors at the event range from universities such as: Bond, Charles Sturt, Newcastle and Southern Cross to Apprenticeship groups and large national and local employers. The idea is to give a genuine array of choices and the event has literally become a one-stop-career-shop for the regions youth. TAFE and private education providers also offer a seemingly unlimited range of options, with some of the more varied careers on offer including: Audio Engineering, Computer Game Design, Drift Racing, Film and Acting, Health & Fitness, Photography & Fashion Design and more. Expo Organiser, Ashley Burke-Smith comments. Feedback from the 2013 event has been overwhelmingly positive, 96% of the exhibitors loved the new venue, 60% signed clients on the day and over 90% said they would book again for 2014! With outcomes like that we couldnt be happier. One of the highlights of the event is the Try A Trade exhibit, where visitors get to roll up their sleeves and enjoy a hands-on learning experience with an industry expert. With exhibits including everything from Beauty Therapy to Plumbing, Car Mechanics to Commercial
Cookery and Hair Dressing to Spray Painting, there is literally something for everybody. It is also an event that creates a lot of passion; Ashley Burke-Smith continues, Its hard not to get emotionally attached to this event. I wish there had been something like this when I was leaving school and I love the fact that the expo helps people at such a difcult and important stage in their life. We get to play a major role in shaping the future for many young people and, whilst this is highly rewarding, it comes with a huge responsibility - Its really important that we get things right. With a real focus on outcomes, the Careers Expo places specic attention on pathways to genuine longterm employment for those who arent looking to continue into University; Mr Burke-Smith continues, There is still a massive skills shortage in the region, particularly in the traditional trades. A student can take on a School Based Apprenticeship or Traineeship and leave school with a skill that can get them full employment and a good salary in a region where many people struggle to nd work. The 2014 Northern Rivers Careers Expo will be held on Thursday 15th and Friday 16th May 2014 at the Goonellabah Sports & Aquatic Centre, visit www.nrcareersexpo.com.au for details.

BUSINESS EFFICIENCY
Cashflow Vs Profit
Clayton Oates, QA Business
e often hear that Cash Flow is King if this is the case then surely Prot is Queen! Theres a lot of talk that the key to managing a successful business is great cash ow management, however this can result in business owners being totally focussed on their bank balance in order to pay their monthly bills. This xation of satisfying short term cash ow needs, whilst a necessary approach, it can tend to take your eye off the ultimate Cash Generator which is strong, recurring prots coupled with great cash ow management. Throughout the business lifecycle you may well switch between phases of focussing on Cash Flow and/or Prot. For example if youre a business start up you know its going to take a couple of years before youre retuning a Prot so you have enough capital secured to fund this start up phase. Whilst you may not be protable during that time (as planned) its vital the working capital you have invested into the business is sufcient to see the business through this phase. Particular focus will be on making sure sales receipts are collected and creditors are managed to maintain supply of your products for sale. You should regularly review your Cash Flow Reports (Historical and Future) together with good Debtor management techniques and regularly reconcile your bank statements and stock levels in line with your plan. Whilst you may be making the sales as expected with the margin as planned you would soon run out of cash if customers are slow in paying or you hold more stock than necessary. Once you are protable and you have paid back your nanciers (usually you and the bank) then you move into another phase,
be careful of complacent cash ow management. Profitable (well capitalised) businesses can sometimes have a Lazy Balance Sheet i.e. the funds are tied up in the business and not producing a return for investors (which is probably you) that is much more than if you sold the business, put the money in the bank and earned interest off the funds. So ultimately Cash Flow becomes a consequence of managing the collection of Prot your business accounting systems should have budgets set up where you can monitor your Actual Prot to Budgeted so you can quickly identify opportunities and threats that exist to your cash ow due to changes in your prot. Also the analysis of your business Balance Sheet is vital particularly the movement of your Cash Flow from one period to the next. Most small business accounting systems have these reports as stock standard features. If you are unsure on how to access them, speak to your software consultant. I would recommend you spend an hour with your Accountant to setup a Prot Budget for your business and ask them to walk you through your Balance Sheet Movement report and educate you on the leading cash ow warning signals.

equivalent full-time staff to simply 15 positions which meant staff had to work full-time or make way for someone else. This is a jobs killer and just one example of how red and green tape is strangling small business - the driver of economic growth and jobs in our region, and its having an impact. Since March 2010 recruitment rates have fallen across Richmond and the Clarence Valley, according to the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations. I have, and will continue, to work with the NSW Business Chamber and all the local Chambers of Commerce to tackle these drags on jobs growth, and I am already lobbying my National Party Ministerial colleagues to ensure we have the right conditions for growth. We also need our share of infrastructure. Recently I had the pleasure to turn the rst sod on the construction of a diversion from Pimlico to Teven to allow the $7.5 billion duplication of the Pacic Highway from Ballina to Woolgoolga to proceed. This will be the nal signicant piece in the highways upgrade which will allow our businesses to easily access the major markets of Brisbane and Sydney. In the meantime, the wages of the hundreds of construction workers working on the upgrade will be poured into our local businesses. Finally, I would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and hope your businesses have a prosperous New Year.

MARKETING
here's been plenty of speculation touting the death of cold calling. A recent survey reveals the speculation to be greatly exaggerated. In fact, cold calling is still an efcient marketing channel for driving leads and sales. DiscoverOrg recently surveyed 1,000 IT executives at a variety of rms, from Fortune-ranked companies to small and medium-sized businesses. The results show marketers should be careful not to ignore traditional marketing strategies. Here's what top IT executives had to say about the effectiveness of outbound marketing: 60% said outbound calls or emails have led to an IT vendor's being evaluated. 75% said they'd decided to attend an event or take an appointment after having received a cold call or email. In today's climate, companies are increasingly pushing social sellinglike blogging, content creation, SEO, and social media engagementas the best means of marketing a product or service. But the DiscoverOrg data underscores the importance of traditional outbound marketing techniques, such as cold calls, emails, TV commercials, and print ads, for driving leads and sales. A good oldfashioned phone call can help humanise you to your prospects, no matter the size of a business or industry. For many companies, a mixture of inbound and outbound marketing techniques may be best, and it doesn't take pricey TV ads to reap the benets. Here are a few ways companies can add outbound marketing techniques to their social strategy. Draft scripts. Ensure you don't come off like an advertisement. Anything that sounds too sensationalistic will fall at. Draft a script
and practice it in a conversational tone, and ensure all written copy reects your company's tone and brand. Time Check. Dont be seen as a nuisance, lunchtime calls are generally unwelcome; it's when people take a break and don't want to be bothered. Calls between 8 and 9am can help you to catch someone or late afternoon, between 4 and 5pm, when the workday is winding down. Make it personal, but don't take it personally. Do some research and collect details about who you're calling, use this to lend yourself credibility. Don't take non-interest or lack of return calls personally; some people are just not in a position to listen to how you're going to help them make or save more money. Offer incentives. Alert them to a social media promotion or contest where you provide an incentive to participatelike a rafe or some other chance to win a prize. Create a landing page. Make it easy for people to get quick information about your company or product. Create a landing page on your company's Facebook page or website. Always include a succinct company bio and a call to action. Track results. Using CRM helps to tweak your strategy over time and line up your techniques to ensure your strategy is working comprehensively across multiple techniques and platforms. Creating a mixture of inbound and outbound marketing techniques could be just what your business needs to improve leads and sales.
