Standard Seven: Assessment The competent teacher understands and uses appropriate formative and summative assessments for

determining student needs, monitoring student progress, measuring student growth, and evaluating student outcomes. The teacher makes decisions driven by data about curricular and instructional effectiveness and adjusts practices to meet the needs of each student. I chose this artifact to illustrate standard seven because I believe it embodies the ability to modify assessments based on student needs while still assessing content comprehension. This assessment has been modified from its original version to create several options for students to demonstrate their knowledge. This assessment was modified to accommodate a 7th grade student who had difficulties comprehending and decoding written text. The student had great artistic abilities, though. Instead of forcing the student to write a lengthy reflection to test his comprehension of the content taught during the lesson, I gave him, and the rest of the students, the option to create a poster or cartoon demonstrating the same knowledge. Knowing that this student had trouble with written text and organizing his thoughts into writing, I modified my original assessment to meet his needs. In the end I found that even though I had a particular student in mind when I modified the assessment, it helped several other students express their knowledge and comprehension better than if they were asked to do the written assignment. This artifact demonstrates my growth as a teacher because I was able to recognize that a student had difficulties in a certain area, and was proactive about modifying the assessment to better fit the needs of that student. When I started teaching, I dont think that I would have been as aware of this students needs and never would have thought to modify my assessment based on those observations. Through continued education and discussion about accommodating students, I am now able to recognize those needs and take the proper actions in order to make sure that student has the chance to properly be assessed. As a teacher it is my responsibility to make sure that all of my students have the opportunity to express their knowledge. Not all students have the same strengths and it would be completely unfair for me to expect every student to excel at the same assessments. In offering modifications to my assessments and creating multiple options for assessment, the student is able to demonstrate their knowledge in a way that they feel comfortable with and have an equal chance to excel at.
