English 200H Autumn 2013 !

Assignment for Paper 2

As part of the W requirement for the course, this paper provides you a chance to synthesize and further develop the writing and thinking you have done over the quarter. In lieu of a final exam, this paper counts for 20% of your overall grade for the course. In this paper of approximately 5-pages, you will be developing a definition of documentary. To do so, you will need to present your definition in conversation with existing definitions of documentary, as they appear in sources such as Aufderheides Documentary: A Very Short Introduction or any other sources that you find in your research. You will also need to support your definition of documentary with close analysis of the elements of form in at least two works of cinema or poetry (or possibly, some type of new media). At least one of the works that you focus on in your paper must be one of the works that we have read or screened in class (other than Rankines Dont Let Me Be Lonely, since it was the focus of Paper 1). The other work that you focus on in this paper must be a work of poetry or cinema (or new media) that we have not read or screened in class but that shares at least some of the elements of documentary form of the work from class that you are focusing on. While the focus of your paper should be on these two works, you may also discuss other works either from class (including Rankines Dont Let Me Be Lonely) or from outside of class. You should assume that the audience for your paper has some familiarity with documentary forms but has not necessarily seen or read the works you are discussing. Therefore, you should provide some background information on each work. However, the paper must go beyond summarizing and should develop a detailed analysis of the elements of form that make up each work. The introduction of the paper should inform the reader how you will be approaching the task of defining documentary. The body paragraphs of the paper should discuss your definition of documentary in relation to existing definitions of documentary and in relation to particular elements of form in the works you have selected to write on. The body paragraphs should incorporate relevant details from the works as well as outside research, with quotations and paraphrases cited in MLA format. The conclusion of the paper should summarize how you have defined documentary, how and why it might differ or concur with existing definitions, and what evidence you have for the definition based on the formal elements of the works you have analyzed in the paper. (It is possible that one or more of the works you discuss in the paper will fall outside of the definition of documentary that you develop. In that case, the paper should discuss why that is so.) Research: The paper must present at least two existing definitions of documentary from a scholarly source such as Aufderheides Documentary: A Very Short Introduction. You are highly encouraged to also consult and cite other scholarly sources as part of developing and discussing your definition. You are also highly encouraged to incorporate and discuss relevant research on what others have written about the works that you are focusing on in your paper. All sources should be cited in MLA format in the text of the paper and in a works cited section at the end of the paper.
