Shale Creek, located just minutes from I-71, is easily accessible to golfers in Cleveland, Akron, Medina, and the surrounding areas. It is nestled in a residential community that had been the Gunkelman Farm for more than one hundred years. The York Township course is built on beautiful rolling land with many small streams that wind through the property and cascade into the Rocky River. The course features bent grass greens, tees, and fairways with strategic bunkers and five sets of tees on each hole to accommodate golfers of all skill levels. Shale Creek has several distinct natural areas, which help create a beautiful and uniquely different golf experience. Holes one through eight occupy an open area of natural rolling terrain and small streams. The Rocky River is in play on holes 10 through 15. The river and wetlands will create their own distinct character. The finishing holes are on a more traditional Ohio terrain, wooded and rolling, with lakes and streams to navigate. All 18 holes blend naturally into their environment and are fun and interesting to play. Golfers will enjoy amenities such as large, undulating greens and chipping areas, a full practice facility and a clubhouse that will offer spectacular, panoramic views of the course.

Effective immediately; it is no longer necessary for Class C members and Associate categories to be members of GCSAA in order to be a member or apply for membership to NOGCSA. This change to the bylaws was done to encourage membership of individuals in these categories in our local association. It was determined by the board, that for these Classes, the requirement of dual membership was too large a financial burden. It is the hope of the Board that this change will encourage individuals new to our profession to join our chapter, remaining active and involved members throughout their careers.

MR. SANDMAN
By Bob Vavrek, senior agronomist, North-Central Region November 11, 2013

Its getting real close to putting courses to bed across the north-central tier of states. By now, most facilities are in the process of winterizing irrigation systems and protecting turf from winter diseases. Never underestimate the value of applying a substantial application of sand to the greens as the final maintenance practice of the season. Many courses fail to apply adequate sand to the greens during the months of peak play and, consequently, fail to dilute the natural accumulation of organic matter. Pre-winter topdressing can partially compensate for inadequate inputs of sand during the summer. Sand can also provide some protection from wind desiccation during an open winter and by the time its ready to resume mowing next spring, the topdressing sand will have disappeared into the putting surface. Best of all, the sand is applied when it will have the least effect on play. Youve tucked in your greens with fungicides and given them a drink of water, now its time for Mr. Sandman to put them to sleep. Dont skimp on sand during the pre-winter topdressing operation. On the other hand, never bury the greens and smother the turf. This is your chance to make up for a few of the past summers missed topdressing applications and protect turf from winter wind desiccation.

Chapter Leaders, I wanted to update on a few items. I know many of you are having your annual meetings and fund raisers at this time of year and there are a couple of issues on the horizon that your members should know about and consider. The first one is the change from OSHA. It has to do with MSDS sheets and world wide recognition. Your members and their staffs must be trained in this by December 1st to be in compliance. Here are the links to information that you can distribute to your members. If you or they have any questions please feel free to contact me or Chava McKeel at GCSAA headquarters at 800-4727878. I will also be attending as many annual meetings as I can so feel free to ask questions when you see me at the meetings. The easiest way for members to access information is by listening to the On Demand webcast and to access it from the new m-Learning page. This page is a list of most recent recordings that are MOBILE.... click on the link, you get the recording. a donation to the Environmental Institute for Golf (EIFG). The EIFG supports all golf course superintendents through funding research, scholarships, government advocacy and outreach and education for superintendents. If your chapter could possibly donate $500 it would make a huge difference. Obviously if you can donate more that would be great as well. For those chapters that have already donated this year, GCSAA and all of the superintendents in the organization really appreciate the kind gestures. Thank you for your time and consideration in thinking of the EIFG.

The annual GCSAA Chapter Delegates Meeting (Oct. 1-2) took on a decidedly different appearance this year, as the focus was not so much on the current state of affairs, but more on the future of the association and the profession.
We were intent on getting feedback on what the profession would look like in the future, targeting the range of 2020 to 2025, GCSAA President Patrick R. Finlen, CGCS, said. It became obvious to the board through our discussions with those in the golf industry, including members, that the profession is experiencing rapid change. Superintendents are being asked to do more, and the tools and resources we use to do that job are changing. Just look at what is happening with technology. The game of golf may not be changing much, but how we manage it is. Peering into the crystal ball To begin the process, attendees were shown a video featuring GCSAA members representing different membership classes, years of service, ownership structure and budget size. They were then asked to offer their thoughts on what the future would entail for members and how GCSAA might be of assistance. The video can be accessed by loading the following link in a web browser: Extensive time was also spent in breakout sessions, addressing the following questions: Would it be advantageous for GCSAA to simplify/narrow membership classes? Should GCSAA enhance Class A standards? What would motivate a member to achieve Class A status? If changes are to be made, how quickly should implementation occur? We werent looking for the delegates to

construct how we get to the future, rather we asked them what the profession would require in terms of competencies, Finlen said. With that feedback, we can then set in motion the plans for how GCSAA can best help members achieve future success.
According to Finlen, the delegates were strongly in support of the need to more narrowly define membership classes and enhance standards. However, opinions varied as to what the standards would look like and the timeline for implementing them. He said the next step would be for the board to engage GCSAA members and others outside the membership in the coming months to get a greater diversity of input. "...I really sensed optimism and a clear vision for the future. The work done in the past is having an impact. Superintendents have respect and are at the table. Now we have to figure out how we build on that momentum for the future." -- Bob Nielsen, CGCS at Bedford (N.Y.) Golf and Tennis Club First-year Peaks and Prairies GCSA delegate Dan Tolson, Class A member at 3 Creek Ranch Golf Club in Jackson Hole (Wyo.), found his experience to be thought-provoking. I really did not know what to expect, but it was an eyeopener for me just to sit and listen to people talk about the issues and how members are impacted, he said. It will be interesting to go back to my chapter and hear what the members have to say. I was impressed by the deep thought the delegates put into the questions.
State of the association Finlen and GCSAA Chief Executive Officer Rhett Evans briefed delegates on various programs and services, noting the 2014 GCSAA business plan would continue to focus on the following priorities:

Enhance technology to allow GCSAA to better serve members and provide them with tools that provide on-course solutions Complete the implementation of the field staff program and the extension of member services to regions/chapters Dedicate additional resources to advocating on behalf of members to golfers, employers and policymakers Enhance education programming and evaluate membership classifications to remain relevant in the marketplace Explore means to increase revenues through traditional and non-traditional sources Continue to be prudent in exploring and implementing programs and services that expand GCSAAs contribution to growing the game worldwide

attendance (83 delegates representing 87 chapters). Delegates also had the opportunity to hear from those members running for national office and to participate in small breakout sessions to learn more about candidate platforms and philosophies. The slate of candidates includes: For president: Keith A. Ihms, CGCS, Country Club of Little Rock (Ark.) For vice president: John J. OKeefe, CGCS, Preakness Hills Country Club, Wayne, N.J. For secretary/treasurer: Peter J. Grass, CGCS, Hilands Golf Club, Billings, Mont. Bill H. Maynard, CGCS, Country Club of St. Albans (Mo.)

This was a great meeting, said Metropolitan GCSA delegate and Class A member Bob Nielsen, CGCS at Bedford (N.Y.) Golf and Tennis Club. This is my ninth delegates meeting, and I really sensed optimism and a clear vision for the future. The work done in the past is having an impact. Superintendents have respect and are at the table. Now we have to figure out how we build on that momentum for the future. I think there was a time GCSAA and the members were on the defensive, just trying to keep what we have. Now I feel we are on the offense. GCSAA and its members are doing good things and were being recognized for it. Not business as usual For the first time since 1999, the entire function was conducted in Lawrence, Kan., with the majority of the time spent at the associations headquarters. It was also held on successive weekdays for the first time instead of following the traditional weekend schedule. While a post-event survey is being conducted, a straw poll indicated the new format was preferred by the majority of those in

Turfpath app for smart phones

By Jason Bennett
In the age of technology we as superintendents can never arm ourselves with enough weapons in the daily grind of turfgrass pressures throughout the summer. I recently discovered an app for smart phones that has been a great addition in the diagnosis and treatment of common pests that we see on a daily basis on the golf course. Turfpath has recently launched a free application for smart phones, both android and Iphone. It is like carrying a text book with you at all times. The easy to use app has been helpful many times already this year for me in the diagnosis and treatment of turf issues on the course as well as at home. After using the application on my phone, I brought it to the attention of my fellow board members at our last meeting and we wanted to make our members aware of its existence. It breaks down turf pests into three categories: Insects, Weeds and Disease. Included in each category is a description of the pest, pictures for proper diagnosis and ways to effectively treat the issue without promoting a specific chemical manufacturer or distributer. Once you have downloaded the application you will receive periodic messages on your phone such as, Lots of chatter about gray leak spot but no positive confirmations. Let us know if you have seen it Dollar spot being reported in your area Also included in the application is a forum section where other superintendents around the US post pictures of what they are seeing on their golf course, good and bad! Hopefully you will find this app as useful as I have.
