Rome and Han China Every civilization is ran in a certain way and expands for the best benefit

of that civilization. Han China and Rome had quite different government structures. Rome made up of two consuls, a senate, and a dictator while Han China was ran by the rules of the andate of Heaven. !s for expansion, Han China expanded for the economic benefit of more land" Rome expanded not only for the economic benefit, but also for the power that would be gained by furthering its area. Han China changed the government from its preceding dynasties. #his was a good thing however" $in %yansty &before the Han' was ran with an iron fist and crushed any resistance. #hrough time, this form of ruling created hatred from the citizens which is what finally brought an end to the $in %ynasty. !fter seeing this, Han China became smart and decided that citizens appreciating their government would ultimately do them better. (o they retained the previous government but reduced the oppressive nature. )here Rome and Han China were ali*e for government was that they both had one main ruler. Rome had a dictator, however, dictators could only rule for a six month time frame. Han+s emperor was brought about by the power of heaven. #hese emperors could stay in charge as long as they li*ed, as long as they were approved by the citizens" if they were foolish, they would be replaced. ,oth Han and Rome have a sense of good and bad rulers" Rome having its six month rule and Han having the ability to replace bad rulers. - believe Rome had the six month rule to stop one person from gaining complete control of the nation and.or causing too much damage that the next dictator can+t fix. Han had, in my opinion, a much better way of ruling. -f someone li*e /ulius Caesar came along, he could rule for as long as he wanted as long as that+s what the people wanted. -n Rome, they *illed one of the best leaders they had ever had because they didn+t want to lose power to one man. -f you have a great leader, let him lead your country to greatness. ! senate is very different than a bureaucracy. ! senate is a group of 0clan elders1 or 0the greater *nowledged1 while a bureaucracy is made up of any civilian who *nows some history of the nation and has some common sense. Han China created a civil service exam to allow its citizens the right to be part of the government and let their voices be heard. - believe this was a game changing decision when changing from $in to Han. )hen allowing citizens to 2oin the government, you are allowing them the right to fight for what they believe in and agree with the way the nation is run. Rome doesn+t do this. #hey exclude their citizens, and even their soldiers. #hey treat their soldiers poorly and pay them li*ewise. )hen the government starts doing things that the citizens disagree with" the disloyalty begins and the collapse of the nation becomes ever so present. #his is where Han and Rome were very different" citizens can+t get mad at government for bad decisions if the government ma*es those decisions based on citizens ideas" they can be mad if they have no say in it though. )hy did Rome not allow civilian voices, honestly, - believe it+s because they thought no one would rebel" they could stay in charge and *eep gaining power if things were ran their way. )hen peoples voices are brought into the mix, war and expansion is much less li*ely, people don+t want to ris* losing soldiers, or family

members, or friends unless for a really good reason. (o Rome made a decision to *eep the control to themselves, which may have wor*ed if it weren+t for fed up soldiers who decided to become disloyal in the end. Rome was in many ways a power house by the end of its reign. Rome had a thirst for power, their main reason for expansion was to gain power and become a great nation. Han China however believed expanding their empire would bring economic wealth. Rome also thought about the wealth that would be gained from expanded as would any country" however, they had one main goal, to conquer. )hile trying to expand, Rome got into a set of wars called the 3unic )ars. #hese wars would last for more than fifty years until finally Rome conquered Carthage. Han pushed out in need for more land for farming as well as land for their rapidly growing population. #he Hans had an extremely valuable resource" sil*. #hey grew other crops such as rice, but sil* would be their greatest accomplishment. )ith the rise of their great amounts of sil*" the (il* Road was established through central !sia. #his road would be used as a route to transport and later sell great amounts of sil*. - believe Han had such a great need for this wealth because they *new you can gain power through war and fear, but if you *eep to yourself and stay out of trouble, you can spend your time wisely becoming a wealthy nation. ! wealthy nation is always a power nation. Rome chooses the aggressive nature and created a great undefeatable army, however, this army would be the reason for their fall. )ithout the proper treatment of a large powerful army, there will always be rebellion" especially if you *ill the one man that they believe in. -n conclusion, Rome and Han China had many similarities as well as differences in how they ran their country and how and why they expanded the way they did. Han China expanded for economic reasons which would bring great wealth in the end while Rome expanded to conquer nearby land. Rome+s government was a bit stricter in the sense of one ruler for a maximum of six months and choices needing to be approved by the senate while Han had an emperor who could almost do as he pleases. !s for these countries today" Chinas economic approach has dominated the globe, ma*ing it the ultimate power house. Rome on the other hand, has basically turned into a popular tourist destination that has virtually no influential power. #his demonstrates that to gain power the economic approach is a much better option than the 0conquer all1 tactic.
