The Idaho State University Outdoor
Adventure Center helps residents stay
active by organizing rock climbing, horseback
riding, backpacking and kayaking events.
There are so many things to do right in our backyard that its just
amazing, says Erchul, who runs the digital media marketing firm
E-Squared Creative with his wife. Its one of the main reasons we decided
to move our business headquarters to here in Pocatello.
FUN IN THE SUN
When the warm weather hits, Corey Wight, a Pocatello native and avid
mountain biker, knows just how fortunate he is.
Id definitely rank Pocatello top ten in the nation for mountain biking,
says Wight, who also owns local eatery The Sand Trap. Its a hidden gem.
We have over 50 miles of trails right outside of downtown. You could
literally ride for days.

ll year round, Pocatello offers so many outdoor recreation
opportunities so close to home that it can be downright
dizzying: skiing, snowshoeing, mountain biking,
fishing, rock climbing, hiking, boating the list goes on and
on. Its exactly what attracts new residents like Rory Erchul
to the beautiful mountain city.
THINGS TO DO
Pocatellos Upper Ross Park has a nine-hole disc
golf course thats free and open to the public.
Easy Access to Adventure
Area residents enjoy more than 1,000 miles of
recreational trails, plus parks with cool features,
such as the rock climbing walls at Ross Park.
One of the most popular spots
for outdoor lovers is the City Creek
Trail System. The main trail, which
meanders alongside a creek,
is a scenic path well used by
bikers, hikers, joggers and
horseback riders.
The Portneuf Greenway, a
13-mile trail system that winds
along the bucolic Portneuf River
and through downtown, is
especially popular with anglers
thanks to the well-stocked Edson
Fichter community fishing pond.
Just south of town, the Mink
Creek Trail System contains more
than 100 miles of multi-use trails.
Throughout the summer, Pocatello
also hosts outdoor competitions
like the Pocatello Marathon, the
Pocatello Triathlon and the Pedal
Fest mountain biking race.
Residents looking to beat the
summer heat can cool off at the
Ross Park Aquatic Complex, a
family-friendly water park. Ross
Park also features a series of
natural, 35-foot-high rock walls
perfect for climbers and rappellers.
For residents who enjoy water
skiing, jet skiing or boating, the
87 square miles of open water at
American Falls Reservoir is just
a 30-minute drive away.
The recreational opportunities
here are endless, Wight says, So
if you like the outdoors, Pocatello
is a sure bet.
WINTER WONDERLAND
In Pocatello, snow is just another
great excuse to get outdoors. The
city lies within a three-hour drive
of celebrated ski resorts in Sun
Valley, Idaho; Jackson Hole, Wyo.;
and Park City, Utah, which makes
Pocatello the perfect base camp
for residents itching to hit the
slopes for some alpine skiing
or snowboarding.
Even closer to home is the
Pebble Creek Ski Area, located
just 20 miles south of downtown
Pocatello. Pebble Creek offers
54 runs on 1,100 acres of skiable
terrain, including dozens of black
diamond and double black diamond
runs for experienced snow buffs
looking for a challenge.
Cross country skiers flock to
the East Fork Mink Creek Nordic
Center, which maintains more
than 12 miles of well-groomed,
Nordic ski trails.
Its pretty inexpensive, and the
groomed trails are just beautiful,
Erchul says. Its really a great
place to spend a day.
The Nordic Center also provides
plenty of trails for snowshoers, and
even a sledding hill for the young
and young at heart.

For those with a need for speed, Pocatello has you covered.
The family-friendly Pocatello Raceway roars to life on Saturdays
throughout the summer and fall, featuring a variety of cars and
classes, from stock cars to outlaw karts to Junk Yard Dogs. Or sit
back and watch motorcycles leap through the air and skid through
the dirt at the Pocatello Motocross Park, pictured, which holds
five races during the summer.
Youth and Amateur Sports
CHEER FOR YOUR FAVORITE
Holt Arena hosts the annual Simplot Games, North Americas premier
indoor high school track and field event. In June, the arenas stands
are packed for the Western Regionals, a youth tournament for
Olympic-style wrestling.
Throughout the summer, baseball enthusiasts head down to Halliwell
Park to watch American Legion amateur games. The regional youth
baseball league, Bannock Baseball, also hosts games in parks throughout
the city. Softball fans should be sure not to miss the Poky Shoot Out
Fastpitch Tournament. This thrilling, ASA-sanctioned event shows off
some of the best female softball pitchers in the Northwest.
For folks looking to yell yeehaw, the Idaho High School Rodeo Finals
take place every year at the Bannock County Fairgrounds. The weeklong
tournament brings to town young cowboys and cowgirls from all
around the state, going head-to-head in events like steer wrestling,
bareback bronc riding, and goat-tying competitions.

Local college sports fans have
a lot to choose from thanks
to Idaho State Universitys
strong athletics program.

College Town Culture
Idaho State Universitys 123,000-square-foot
L.E. and Thelma E. Stephens Performing Arts
Center comprises the Jensen Grand Concert Hall,
Bistline Theatre, Rogers Theatre and the Marshall
Rotunda. The venue hosts theatrical performances and
concerts, most of which are open not just to students
and faculty but all members of the community.

VOLUNTEER SPIRIT DRIVES MAJOR COMMUNITY
IMPROVEMENTS AND EVENTS
S
hilo Roubidoux began contributing to the
United Way more than 10 years ago and even
organized the annual United Way fundraising
drive at J.R. Simplot, where she works as human
resources manager.
LIVING
The Rotary International Rose Garden
features a statue of the citys namesake,
Chief Pocatello. Sam Nettinga, a local
volunteer, helped make the statue possible.
Today, Roubidoux serves on the board of United
Way of Southeastern Idaho, and all of her charitable
efforts prompted the Greater Pocatello Chamber of
Commerce to present her with its 2012 Community
Volunteer of the Year Award. Through her work with
United Way, she has become involved with other
charities such as Aid for Friends emergency shelter,
Salvation Army, Foster Grandparents elementary
school reading program, and the Pocatello Free Clinic,
all rewarding experiences among other residents
known for their generous spirit.
Pocatello is the most giving community Ive ever
known, with people ready to step up with volunteerism
and funding, Roubidoux says.
One example of a recent large volunteer effort for
Pocatello residents is construction of a Brooklyns
Playground, the first fully-inclusive playground for
the Pocatello-Chubbuck area where children of all
abilities can play.
150-200 PROJECTS
Another resident well known for volunteer work,
Sam Nettinga, a retired representative with the Meat
Cutters Union and former Greater Pocatello Chamber
executive director, has volunteered on 150-200
projects while living in Pocatello.
As a chamber executive in the 1990s, I was able to
help establish Valley Pride to better market Pocatello
to attract more business and industry, Nettinga says.
I also steered a beautification committee that resulted
in positive results like welcome signs posted at key
entrances throughout the city.
Nettinga also worked with Bannock County
officials to make improvements at the fairgrounds,
such as establishing an RV park, plus organized a
16-foot statue of Chief Pocatello to be built at the
Rose Garden.
I also became a member of the Pocatello Rotary
Club, whose motto is service above self, and we
take that motto to heart, he says. I stay busy in
retirement and have met many good friends through
volunteerism. We often tackle projects that the local
government cant do or doesnt have the resources
to do, so groups of volunteers can step up and
accomplish plenty of good for our community.
BIGGEST SHOW IN IDAHO
A massive volunteer effort involves the staging of a
Biggest Show in Idaho Music Festival & Extravaganza
that occurs every Fourth of July week.
Loren Azzola, a sales representative with Mutual
Insurance, has been a community volunteer since the
late 1980s when he joined the Gate City Rotary Club,
and today is on the committee that oversees the
Biggest Show in Idaho.
I have always been involved in Pocatello projects
because I love living here, he says. I became a
chamber board member and founded the February
Fantasy chamber membership ball that celebrates its
10th year in 2014, plus today Im a volunteer with the
Bannock Development Corporation that helps recruit
businesses to the region.
Azzola says local resident Phil Meador ran the
Biggest Show in Idaho for 20 years but stepped aside
after 2012, so Azzola and several other volunteers
now organize the festival.
In 2013, we added the Extravaganza to feature a
run, bike race, golf tournament, baseball tourney and
other activities to go along with all of the music festival
traditions, he says. Many people in Pocatello enjoy
volunteering, doing things that are right and make
sense for the community.

at Idaho State
Once students have graduated
high school, theres no need to
travel far to receive a quality
post-secondary education.
With an enrollment of nearly
14,500, Idaho State University
attracts students from around
the world and offers access to
high-quality education in more
than 280 programs. The school
is known as Idahos health-care
university, providing about
75 percent of the states health
degree programs. ISU also
includes the Idaho Accelerator
Center, a top research and
development facility.
Elementary and Secondary Education
PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SCHOOLS
Pocatello/Chubbuck School District (#25)
comprises elementary, middle, and senior high
schools that include kindergarten through 12th grade,
including a Montessori school and an early intervention
center. Each year, the district publishes its report
card, which is created by the State of Idaho. In its
most recent report card, in 2012, Pocatello/Chubbuck
public schools exceeded the states goal of
graduating 90 percent of high school seniors,
graduating 95 percent. The district also reported
that it is closing the gap in the achievement scores
between white, black, Hispanic and Native
American students.
Parents interested in private school opportunities
for their children have high-quality schools to choose
from. Pocatellos Grace Lutheran School teaches
children in prekindergarten through eighth grade and
received the National Blue Ribbon School Award by the
U.S. Department of Education. The award is given to
recognize public and private elementary, middle, and
high schools where students perform at very high levels
or where significant improvements are being made in
students academic achievement. The Holy Spirit
Catholic School, serving students in kindergarten
through eighth grade, is accredited through the Western
Catholic Educational Association. Calvary Chapel
Christian School of Pocatello offers a Christian
education experience for students from prekindergarten
age all the way through 12th grade.

TOURISM
In a move proving its priority to
increase tourism, the chamber hired
a tourism administrator in January
2013, Birgitta Bright, who promotes
the area as a travel destination,
drawing attention to area museums,
cultural events and ISU activities
and informing potential visitors
about hotels and event facilities.
The Idaho Travel Council
awarded the chamber a $110,000
grant to fund its tourism promotion,
says Matt Hunter, president and
CEO of the Pocatello-Chubbuck
Chamber of Commerce.
The grant goes toward
advertising and marketing aspects
such as developing a tourism
website and a social media strategy,
and finding the best advertising
platforms, Hunter says.
LOWERING BUSINESS TAXES
Another recent chamber effort
urged state legislators to lower
corporate tax rates.
The chamber helped get the
legislature to give individual
businesses an exemption on the
first $100,000 of personal property
tax, and the chamber continues to
work for full elimination of that tax,
Hunter says.
COMMUNIVERSITY
The chamber is also involved
with CommUniversity, a program
that better links the business
community with ISU through
research programs, internships and
co-promoting what ISU offers its
students and the community.

County. The class members then
complete a large community
improvement project. The current
Leadership Pocatello class has
34 participants the largest
class ever.
The chamber is involved
in many projects to assist our
760 members, Hunter says. We
are proud to be a leader in Pocatello
and have been a key part of this
community since 1901.
