Floridas Nonagricultural Employment by Industry (Seasonally Adjusted)

The number of jobs in Florida was 7,627,400 in November 2013, up 183,100 jobs compared to a year ago.
November 2013 was the 40th consecutive month with positive annual job growth after the state lost jobs for
over three years. The industry gaining the most jobs was trade, transportation, and utilities (+56,800 jobs, +3.7
percent).

Other industries gaining jobs included professional and business services (+38,700 jobs, +3.6 percent); leisure
and hospitality (+29,100 jobs, +2.9 percent); construction (+24,300 jobs, +7.0 percent); private education and
health services (+21,800 jobs, +1.9 percent); financial activities (+8,300 jobs, +1.7 percent); manufacturing
(+3,300 jobs, +1.0 percent); information (+3,200 jobs, +2.4 percent); and other services (+2,600 jobs, +0.8
percent).

These industry job gains were partially due to increases in food and beverage stores; employment services; food
services and drinking places; specialty trade contractors; ambulatory health care services; real estate; fabricated
metal product manufacturing; publishing industries, except internet; and personal and laundry services and
membership associations and organizations.

Total government (-5,000 jobs, -0.5 percent) was the only major industry losing jobs over the year, with both
federal and state government contributing to the loss.
Local Area Unemployment Statistics (Not Seasonally Adjusted)

In November 2013, Monroe County had the states lowest unemployment rate (3.7 percent), followed by Walton
County (4.0 percent); Okaloosa County (4.5 percent); and Alachua and St. Johns counties (4.9 percent each).
Many of the counties with the lowest unemployment rates were those with relatively high proportions of
government employment.

Hendry County had the highest unemployment rate (11.3 percent) in Florida in November 2013, followed by
Flagler County (9.2 percent), Putnam County (8.4 percent), Madison County (8.3 percent), and St. Lucie County
(8.2 percent). Hendry County had the highest unemployment rate in the state in November, mainly due to longterm job losses in government employment. Hendry was the only county in Florida with double-digit
unemployment in both October and November.
Area Nonagricultural Employment (Not Seasonally Adjusted)

Twenty of the 22 metro areas in the state had over-the-year job gains in November 2013. The areas with the
largest gains were Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater (+39,300 jobs, +3.3 percent), Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford
(+28,900, +2.7 percent), and Ft. Lauderdale-Pompano Beach-Deerfield Beach (+17,700 jobs, +2.4 percent).

The two metro areas that lost jobs over the year were Panama City-Lynn Haven-Panama City Beach (-1,600 jobs,
-2.3 percent) and Palm Coast (-200 jobs, -1.0 percent).
Note: The unemployment and job growth rates are estimates, which are primarily based on surveys created and mandated by the U.S. Bureau of Labor
Statistics in cooperation with the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity.
The unemployment rate is derived from Florida household surveys conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau under contract with the U.S. Bureau of Labor
Statistics. The job growth rate is derived from Florida employer surveys conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Both estimates are revised on a monthly basis. In addition, these estimates are benchmarked (revised) annually based on actual counts from Florida's
Reemployment Assistance tax records and other data.
Procedures mandated by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics may result in more variable month-to-month changes. For further information, go to:
http://www.bls.gov/sae/cesprocs.htm

The mission of the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity is to promote economic prosperity for all Floridians and
businesses through successful workforce, community, and economic development strategies.
