Model A(O)F Sur-Set Top No-Go Lock Assemblies

Product Family Nos. H83514 and H83607
Description

Drawing No. 284-814-01

The Model A(O)F Lock Assemblies are the

Sur-Set line of Top No-Go Locks. They are mechanical devices used to position and secure wireline retrievable equipment in appropriate type
nipples which are located in the tubing string.
These locks provide a smooth interior for minimum pressure drop and maximum fluid flow. The
large bearing area and the angle of the bevel on
the locking dogs enable the Sur-Set Locks to hold
high pressure without damage. The no-go shoulder in the Seating Nipple is used only to locate the
lock. Once the locking dogs are fully extended into
the nipples locking groove, the no-go should disengaged, thus eliminating the problem of no-go
swagging.
Sur-Set is a trademark of Baker Oil Tools.
Due to the design of the locking dogs in the
10,000 psi rated lock, it is impossible to install the
lock in a 15,000 psi rated nipple.
The Baker A(O)F Locks are available manufactured per the Baker certification program which
follows specifications and guidelines set forth for
controlling quality in design, manufacture, and
testing. This certification program exceeds requirements set forth by API 14A. The AOF Locks are
available in materials other than the standard 9CR1MO. Contact Customer Service for information.

Operation
The Lock Assembly is pinned to the Running
Tool in its extended position with the Locking Dogs
collapsed. The Assembly is run in on wireline until
it locates the no-go shoulder in the Seating Nipple.
The Tool String is then jarred downward, moving
the Fishing Neck under the Locking Dogs and expanding them outward into the Lock Groove in the
Nipple Profile. At this time, the C-ring is shifted to
its down position. Upward jarring will shear the
Running Tool from the Lock. Retrieve the Running
Tool and visually inspect it to assure that the Retrieving Ring is in the down position indicating that
the Lock was set properly.
NOTE: If Lock is not set properly, the Running Tool
cannot be sheared. Retrieve Lock/Running Tool
Assembly, inspect, re-pin Running Tool and run in
again.

Nipples
The Model A(O)F Locks are run in top no-go
nipples designated Model AF. The standard ma-

terial for these nipples is 9CR-1MO (22 Rc max.)

which meets the requirements of N.A.C.E. MR-017 for H2S service. This material is also recommended for mild CO2 service.
These nipples are easily identified by the identification groove(s) located at the box end of the
nipple.

Running and Pulling Procedure

Preparation on the Rig Floor
For item numbers refer to T/M 284-815-00
page 8 (Model A Running Tool with Model D
Probe).
1. Inspect Running Tools to assure that the correct size shear pin is being used.
2. Using a pair of calipers, check the basic OD
and no-go dimensions of the Tool. Compare
the values with the well prognosis for any incompatibility.
3. Attach Pulling Tool to Locks Fishing Neck and
shift Fishing Neck upwards until the Locking
Dogs on Lock collapse.
4. Install the Model D Probe, Product Family No.
H81156, onto the Model A Running Tool,
Product Family No. H81155, and install Set
Screws (8).
5. Remove the Set Screws (4) from the Fishing
Neck (1) of the Running Tool and remove Fishing Neck from Dog Retainer (5).
6. Move the Retrieving Ring (3) to a position
above the groove on Inner Mandrel (7).
7. Pull Inner Mandrel up until Dogs (6) collapse.
8. Slide this assembly into the lock until it bottoms.
9. Line up hole in Model D Probe (B) with hole in
Lock Mandrel. Pin with correct size brass shear
stock.
10.Install Fishing Neck back onto the Dog Retainer, tighten and install Set Screw (4).
11.Install Shear Screws (2) through Fishing Neck
and into groove on Inner Mandrel. Screw in until
they bottom, then loosen one-quarter turn. Two
Brass Shear Screws should, under normal conditions, be sufficient. The number of screws required may vary according to well conditions.
12.Before pulling the Tool String up into the lubricator, clean, inspect and grease any chevron
packing.

Running In
1. Run in and locate lock in proper nipple.

2. Jar down easily until no-go is reached.

3. Continue jarring down to shear Shear Screws
(2) in the Model A Running Tool, which collapses the Fishing Neck of lock, thus setting the
Locking Dogs.
4. Pick up on Running Tool to assure that Lock is
set.
5. Jar up to release the Running Tool from the
Lock. If Lock is set properly in the Nipple, the
Running Tool will release from the Lock. If Lock
is not set properly, the Running Tool will not release and will retrieve it from hole. Come out of
hole, inspect, re-pin tool and rerun.

Retrieving the Lock

1. Assure that pressure above and below lock is
equalized.
2. Select proper Pulling Tool.
3. Run in hole and land Pulling Tool in Lock.
4. Jar down to engage Pulling Tool onto Locks
Fishing Neck.
5. Jar up to unset Lock from Nipple.
6. Come out of the hole.

Testing Procedure
The Model A(O)F Lock Assemblies must be
functionally tested per SSQPM A002-23 after assembly, with the proper nipple.
1. Assemble Items 1-6 (refer to T/M Drawing 284814-01 page 6) per Assembly Instructions on
page 5.
2. The Lock should be in the run-in position (Fishing Neck (1) extended and Locking Dogs (5)
collapsed).
3. Place the Nipple horizontally in soft jawed vise.
4. Using the appropriate Model A Running Tool
and Model D Probe (refer to chart on page 3
for correct size), install the Lock into Nipple.
5. Jar lock into nipple until it stops.
6. The gap between Fishing Neck (1) and Lock
Ring (3) should be 1/4" (0.250) or less. If gap is
larger, contact Baker Flow Control Engineering.

Model A(O)F Lock

7. Remove lock from nipple gage using the appropriate GS-Type Pulling Tool. Jar out to unseat
the lock from the nipple. Remove Pulling Tool
from Lock.
8. Proceed per assembly instructions, page 5.

Disassembly Instructions
Refer to T/M Drawing 284-814-01 page 6.
Prior to attempting disassembly of a Model
A(O)F Lock Assembly, establish that adequate
disassembly/assembly equipment is available. A
list of equipment considered adequate:
Soft jawed vise
Truarc spreader pliers (expander type)

Use a low viscosity lubricating oil on threads,
such as SAE 30W.
1. Install Locking Dogs (5) into milled slots in the
Lock Mandrel (6).
2. Install Lock Ring (3) on Fishing Neck (1) and
slide it all the way back.
3. Install the C-ring (4) onto its groove on Fishing
Neck (1).
CAUTION: Do not over-expand C-ring.
4. Generously grease Split Ring Segments (2)
and install them onto Fishing Neck (1).
5. Assure that C-ring (4) is centered in its groove
in the Fishing Neck and carefully insert the
Fishing Neck into the Lock Mandrel. A slight
squeeze may be necessary on C-ring in order
for Fishing Neck to slide in.
NOTE: Do not use undue force during installation of
Fishing Neck. Tap lightly with rubber hammer of
necessary.

6. Make-up Lock Ring (3) onto Lock Mandrel (6).

Tighten thread with a strap wrench.
7. At this point, test lock per SSQPM A002-9 on
page 4.
8. Place lock in soft jawed vise.
9. Actuate lock two or three times to assure that it
is functioning properly, and leave in the fully
locked or set position for storage.
