My interest budded from a project during my senior year at UCSD, in which I analyzed the differences and theory of both open and closed control on a rotating table. After finishing that project and another lab founded upon feedback control, I began to perceive the trend towards automation occurring in all aspects of industry and life. It is easy to see the importance of control theory, not only in major industries like automotive , robotic, and aeronautic industries, but also I believe there exists a greater potential for applying these practices among less traditionally thought of industries like the furniture and cooking industry. I am currently working for the largest oil and gas equipment designer and manufacturer, and here too the effects of control engineering can be seen. Efficiency and more importantly safety, on offshore rigs in the past few years has significantly increased as dangerous manual labor is being replaced with automatic machinery, but there are still potentially fatal processes handled by human hands. Since taking the first step in knowing where these voids and potential market places exist within the oil and gas process, the next step would for be to increase my knowledge and understanding of feedback control in order to incorporate onto future conceived drilling equipment that fills these gaps and transforms the practice of drilling into a completely automatic procedure. The majority of my experience comes from studies as an undergrad. I earned an A in Controls Engineering 143B. Many methods of analysis of controls engineering were covered such as PID controller, root locus method, Nyquist method, and state space analysis. My understanding of PID controller was entrentch after experimenting in a senior lab class how different values for the PID controller affects the behavior an oscillating mass. 4. What are your research interests? Within your subdiscipline, you should be able to identify one or two topics that are of interest to you. When possible, be specific about your research agenda. Remember that you will be working with professors in research; therefore, your research interests should parallel those of the faculty. (You will usually not be expected to know exactly what you want to research; faculty know that initial interests often change.) 5. How are you a "match" for the program to which you are applying? Explain what attracts you most to the institution/program to which you are applying. Align your research interests with those of one or more of the affiliated professors. The better the "match" with the program/professors, the better the chance that you will be admitted.

Other factors to weave in (remember these are secondary factors):

 Give examples of personal attributes or qualities that would help you complete graduate study successfully.
