Organ Donor

1. How many people donate their organs each year?

Every year there are 14,013 Organ Donors resulting in 28,052 organ transplants. What is the Process to do so? A province-by-province guide Since health care is a provincial matter in Canada, every province has its own ways of handling organ donor registries. Here are the details for each province. Alberta, Nunavut and Northwest Territories Alberta does not have an organ donor registry at this time, although you can make your wishes known by signing the back of your health card. Sign the organ and tissue donor card in the presence of a witness. This is not legally binding, but does indicate to your family your wishes. The back of your Alberta Health Care card is Albertas donor card. If you dont have a donor card, and would like one, please contact: For more information, contact the H.O.P.E. (Human Organ Procurement and Exchange) Program: For Calgary and southern Alberta, call 403-9448700 For Edmonton and northern Alberta, as well as for Nunavut and the Northwest Territories, call 780-407-8411 How are the organs handled and delivered? When any patient dies, the hospital is required to contact the local Organ Procurement Organization (OPO). A member of that organization then determines if you are a designated donor or a potential donor and whether your organs are candidates for donation. Your family is contacted about donation, asked for consent if you didn't register as an organ donor and asked about your medical history. If it's determined that your organ can be used, it's removed, carefully packaged and delivered to the transplant hospital. If the transplant hospital is in the same geographic area as the location of your body, a representative from the OPO transports your organ in a cooler. However, if the organ's destination is farther away, a contracted team from that hospital or OPO will fly to the organ, take possession of it and deliver it to the transplant hospital. Your organ will then be transplanted into the waiting recipient. Discuss if it is a good idea to donate organs and, if so, why do so few people do it? I think it is a good idea to donate your organs because you can save multiple

lives by donating your organs once you die, by just signing a form you can change many peoples lives. It also doesnt affect you because you are dead when you donate and it doesnt affect your funeral or anything like some people believe it does which is why so few people donate, or just because they dont know how to donate.

2. You just found out that the person sitting next to you is going to be
unwound. Come up with ten good reasons why they should NOT be. Remember, their life may depend upon it. 1. They are old enough to know what they want in life and should not be forced to give it up. 2. They are a human being with memories and feelings. 3. Unwinding is basically the same thing as murdering someone. 4. Other people in life love/need them and would also be hurt by it. 5. If they are being unwound because there parents dont like the way they are acting then they should get the chance to prove themselves better instead of just being unwound. 6. Every person is unique and adds something to the world around you. 7. Its unfair to not let them choose to live or not. 8. Teenage are some of the hardest years (in my opinion) so choosing whether or not to unwind them during when there may be acting at there worst is not fair because its not a good example of who they truly are. 9. You cant take it back once you have done it, they could turn out to be a wonderful person. 10. I think it would be a better choice to either live with your family or move out rather than being unwound. (they still dont have to deal with you, but its not killing you)
